| Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and Childbirth | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Brimming with the author's signature frankness and humor, a no-holds-barred account of what you can really expect when you're expecting.
Oh, the joys of pregnancy! There's the gasiness, constipation, queasiness, and exhaustion; the forgetfulness, crankiness, and the constant worry. Of course, no woman is spared these discomforts and humiliations, but most are too polite to complain or too embarrassed to talk about them. Not Jenny McCarthy! In Belly Laughs, the actress and new mother reveals the naked truth about the tremendous mood swings, the excruciating pains, and the unseemly disfigurement that go along with pregnancy. Never shy, frequently crude, and always laugh-out-loud funny, McCarthy covers it all in the grittiest of girlfriend detail. With tips and hilarious musings on morning sickness and hormonal rage, hemorrhoids, pregnant sex, and the torture and sweet relief that is delivery, Belly Laughs is must-read comic relief for anyone who is pregnant, who has ever been pregnant, is trying to get pregnant or indeed, has ever been born! |

This is a really funny book, but not ver big. I wish it was a little longer. I finished it in one sitting. But it was a great read for a chuckle! And if you know someone who is really unprepared for pregnancy, then this is a great book to give them. Jenny's stories are super funny and very down-to-earth.

I was hoping for a lot more from this book. Nothing about it was paticularly funny... it was kinda slow and predictible in its humor. There are a lot funnier books about pregnancy out there.

This is a very humorous book about being pregnant. It has such true insight and is very funny. I read this book in one night & I was laughing out loud the whole book. I recommended to friends & they loved it & made them feel better while pregnant. Some of the topics Jenny writes about are: morning sickness, cravings, hemorhoids, strangers touching your belly, hormones, back pain, lamaze, stretch marks and much more.

I love Jenny McCarthy's honesty in her book. She doesn't try to sugarcoat things, she doesn't sound like one of those freaky women who love every pain of pregnancy (or, worse yet, who don't have any pains of pregnancy)... it's just pure honesty about her own experiences when she was pregnant, including all the grossness that no one will tell you about. It was hard to put this book down, and I definitely had quite a few laughs while agreeing with some of her experiences.

I read Jenny McCarthy's "Baby Laughs" recently - and my baby hasn't even been born yet! I had such a good time reading "Belly Laughs" when I first became pregnant that I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one!
I am sure some of this is exaggeration, but I've no doubt much of it is incredibly close to the truth. True to form, Jenny rarely holds back, though it seems she has watered down her humor a touch, as compared to Belly Laughs. Despite the seemingly terrifying moments and exhaustion she describes experiencing, there is no doubt she LOVES being a mom, and will make any new mom reading this look forward to experiencing the same all the while laughing out loud. I definitely recommend this to all new mommies and mommies-to-be! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-12-11 21:56:34 EST)

A fantastic and realist look at 'the joys ' of being pregnant. A realistic look at what's happening to your body and a great assurance you are not alone. I highly recommend this book.

If you're looking for a book with all the facts about pregnancy, this is not it. Jenny McCarthy is telling it from her point of view and in a comical way. This is a great book to laugh about pregnancy and the great and not so great parts about it.

I had big expectations for this book, I red the preview pages and it was hilarous. However when I got the book I was kind of sad that it had very few pages with a big font, there are like 3 pages per chapter and the contents even though very funny lacked of some conclusion.
It is great for light reading, it wont take you more than 2 days to read. It is funny and if you are pregnant I'm sure you can relate to it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-11-29 02:15:15 EST)

Terrific read and straight to the point! Very very funny but be forewarned for those who are easily offended Jenny is her true self and does not hold back with anything! I got this for my sister who is pregnant with her first child and wanted a book that was a little lighter reading for her in addition to all the serious subject matter out there. She LOVED it and recommended I read it as well and I laughed the whole time even the chapter titles are hilarious!

Is it any wonder Jenny McCarthy is now dating Jim Carrey, the man of laughs himself? I never expected a former Playmate to be this funny and HONEST. However, I did make the mistake of taking this book into my work, and reading it on my lunch break - I was promptly accused of being pregnant. (I'd just like to clarify I'm NOT.)
Jenny McCarthy describes this as the book to read if you want to find out the truth about what will happen to your body while pregnant. Boy, she's not shy about anything is she? Nothing is embarrassing to her. Stretchmarks, the dreaded cellulite, memory loss, haemorrhoids, loss of sex drive, weird cravings, wind, and finding out the sex of the baby. The chapters are short & sweet (much like myself), and no stone is left uncovered. You will find yourself laughing out loud, and then blushing the next. Jenny McCarthy has hit the nail on the head with this release, and the follow up, and I look forward to any other publications. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-11-03 22:03:27 EST)

My copy came in the mail last night and I finally got around to taking at peak today at lunch. I have to confess, I'm only on page 37, but I was surprised to find myself laughing out loud in the restaurant and hesitating to put it down. The chapters are short and easy to read and Jenn's wit is refreshing. Belly Laughs is a nice break from the "informative" pregnancy reading that most of us find ourselves drowning in. Can't wait to finish!

I really enjoyed this book. Jenny McCarthy is very up-front and detailed about her pregnancy experience. Which is a good thing - she has an excellent, irreverent sense of humor. Reading this book feels like a conversation with a close friend. McCarthy has been through all the good and bad sides of pregnancy. When you read this book, you know that she understands what it's all like, and that makes you feel a little less scared about the whole thing.
My only real complaints are the length and the editing. This book is way too short, and it also reads like it was written in a rush. The tone is more like an email (lots of capital letters, poor grammar, clumsy sentences) than a professionally published book. Still, at least it is genuine. There is no doubt that this is what Jenny McCarthy really felt during her pregnancy. Also, you may think that a blonde TV star and former Playboy Playmate cannot possibly understand how fat you feel during pregnancy. But in Jenny McCarthy's case, you'd be wrong. She started out skinny, sure, but she gained sixty pounds. So she does really know what it's like to be horrified by the number on the scale. That helps. I absolutely adore this book. I picked it up when I was about 6 months pregnant and read through it right away. As I was reading it I noticed that I didn't experiance any of the things that Jenny had experiance (most of the things in her book aren't in normal baby books so I thought that i was normal). Wouldn't ya know it.. I couple weeks later I got ALL of those experiance. At least I wasn't to suprised!!! She tells you what doctors and your mother wont warn you about! I recommend Baby Laughs as well

I love how honest Jenny is.. and I think that they will make my friend laugh, cry and scream.. I also feel honored and blessed that there is a book out there that talks like my best friend and I do.. Our excuse is we are both marrie to the blunt Navy boys.. hehehe.. Jenny just is!!

I liked this book at first and then felt a little like I was reading a Dr. Seuss book. It is good and true, but way too short on details. A lot of people are easily offended and put off frankness, often interpreting honesty as vulgarity. I, on the other hand, want every little piece of info. I want more than a couple pages that really amount to notes. If you like to laugh it is really funny, I even cried at the end(I'm pregnant). I read it in a couple days and wished it had more... She is good at making things "normal" that most women want to keep as "too much Info". I can't understand after all these years of revolutionary technology and the internet, women can still want everything to be so prude. I got this as a gift, and I would certainly buy it for anyone who is a hypochondriac, a neurotic, or a curmudgeon!

I didn't just read this book in one night-- I read it in about two hours. It's really short, particularly because most of the "chapters" are about two pages long. I laughed out loud twice toward the beginning, then just grinned from time to time as I got used to the humor.
It suffers in editing and proofreading, however. I'm surprised the publisher missed the many grammatical errors throughout the book (two on page 58 alone), and chose to let Jenny commit exclamation mark and CAPITAL LETTER abuse (!!!). There were many clever spots, but it read too much like a first draft to me, and made me wonder if they were rushing a publication schedule. Enjoyable nonetheless, provided you're not horrified by profanity and bodily functions. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-09-20 00:56:02 EST)

This is so hilarious! I highly recommend this book if you are trying to conceive, if you are pregnant, or if you've already had a baby. Some of the stuff she talks about kind of can freak you out a little but it dosen't scare you too much. I was laughing the whole way through the book. It is also a short read.

Forget whether you like McCarthy for a moment. . . She has candidly and humorously put together everything you REALLY need to know about pregnancy, but could only find out from your girlfriends (sometimes, not even them) in the past. If you are a first-time mom buy all the "Million Technical Things You Must Know About Being Pregnant" books, read them, then get this one!
McCarthy points out things about the mysterious pregnant body that most women experience and are too embarrassed to talk about. She even disses the super-skinny bikini models that start to appear on every television show once you're too huge and close to delivery to care about leaving the couch anymore. The most realistic and true-to-life detail? The last chapter. Because once your baby is in your arms, all your lamenting over weight gain, stretch marks, and your ever-widening rear takes a distant last place to this newly discovered love. My husband even read this book and, although a little grossed out, thought it was hilarious. This is a wonderful pick-me-up during those emotional moments you're likely to have during pregnancy. "Belly Laughs" delivers as its name implies. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-09-06 16:35:25 EST)

Written in an easy-to-read girlfriend-to-girlfriend format. Great titles for each chapter, Jenny McCarthy lays down the info in a naked (!) and honest way. She brazenly deals with subjects that are NOT mentioned in more formal pregnancy guides and makes you laugh with her descriptions. It's a nice gentle way to be exposed to the realities of pregnancy. I enjoyed it and helpfully my man found it easy to read without being too technical or weird.

I bought this book for my sister last year when she found out she was pregnant, and she read it in one sitting. So when I found out I was expecting, I just had to get this book.
First of all, I must tell you that I love Jenny MCCarthy, so I am aware of her openness and her no-holds-barred kind of attitude. This book explains things that most women will not talk about regarding pregnancy. It is definitely a book that I could not put down until I read the whole thing. I laughed so hard that I was crying. She has serious points in the book (don't get me wrong), but she has a way of describing things that makes it humorous. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-26 20:41:10 EST)

I was hesitant about buying this book but I did anyway and I'm so glad I did. Jenny tells it like it is. All the other pregnancy books are just drone and tell you the same thing. Jenny tells you all about those things but it's more personal because it's coming from her life so you get to really see what it will be like when it happens to you. I learned about stuff that I hadn't been told by my doctor or read in any other pregnancy book. I was laughing the whole time I was reading it. My friend, who isn't even expecting, asked to borrow it after I'm finished. A great read for soon-to-be moms, soon-to-be dads, and anyone else!
I'm going for major surgery soon and it's been suggested that giving up caffeine a couple of weeks beforehand would aid the healing process. Not sure this is true but I guess it can't do any harm, only good! Problem is going to be what to do about my mocha addiction. We've got a coffee machine at work that dispenses beautiful, yummy mocha. I've restricted myself to 1 a day after lunch - that's been hard enough. Now I'm reading this book called "The Truth About Caffeine" by Kushner and it's really been an eye opener. Who knew how much coffee harms the body. I recommend reading it. Model, actress and spokewoman Jenny Mccarthy shows the lighter side to pregancy, birth and future motherhood in this humorous novel. She makes you laugh at her personal asides which happened during her pregnancy of her son Evan. She pulls no punches. Her book is funny because she tells it like it is..Everything from Mood Swings to Weight Gain is covered honestly, which makes this humor real (and it is!)
Thank God I am a man, but the next friend who states that she (or in the case of her husband telling me that his wife) is pregnant-will get a copy of this book from me, NO QUESTIONS ASKED! With a yellow sticky note posted on the cover READ THIS NOW! And Jenny, thanks for the laughes-i just hope men never get pregnant or have babies...It would kill me! I'm not pregnant yet but wanted to get the book because Jenny McCarthy is hilarious and so is this book. Weather you are trying to get pregant, already pregnant, or have had the baby I highly recommend this book. It's a light read it only took me two days to finish it and it had me laughing the entire time. Some of the stuff kind of scares me about getting pregnant but it dosen't scare you so much you are afraid to have a baby. Some people commented she used a lot of language yeah she does but she's so funny you hardley notice or just don't care. I just started reading baby laughs.

This book is by no means a medical text book on pregnancy but in my mind that is one of the most appealing things about it! I hate most pregnancy books out there because they are either written for the hippy earth mother or written to scare you silly and totally depress you. This book is so light hearted, really fun and it is refreshing to read a pregnancy book that is so upbeat and funny. I found myself laughing out loud a lot whilst reading this. I generally find Jenny Mcarthy a bit annoying when I watch her on TV but she was charming and funny as an author. She takes you through her pregnancy experience right from day one of discovering she was pregnant up till just after giving birth. She tells it all like it is and I really liked her direct attitude and totally frank way of discussing everything you could want to know. This includes things that could otherwise be quite scary to read about (such as the horrors that await a changing pregnant body!) but because she does so in such a humorous way, it does not make you cringe or terrify you - it actually makes you laugh at it all. This is an enjoyable book to read even if you are not at a stage where you are thinking about babies. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a fun read and a good laugh. This is not for the earth mothers out there or for people who are seeking a medical commentry on pregnancy and child birth.

I am not sure what I was looking for by reading this; certainly I wasn't looking to be told that sex during pregnancy should just be tossed to the side, or how grateful my husband would be if I just didn't bother. I didn't expect to be regaled with the wonders of the epidural, even though that epidural caused every side effect in the book for Jenny. Slowed labor down, resulted in c-section, baby had trouble breathing at birth. Hello?!? That's why some women DON'T want epidurals Jenny. Not even the smallest bit of introspective thinking there. She wasn't even in pain when she got the stupid thing.
Straight on to not even considering breastfeeding her newborn baby. Her choice, of course, but... :( I guess I expected Jenny McCarthy to more be rejecting the stereotypes of pregnancy in America instead of jumping into EVERY SINGLE ONE. I always thought she was this bold and bright chick who'd be doing things her own way, instead of doing things the way everyone does it. I also just didn't find it that funny. Even the funny parts weren't that funny. I bought it at a used bookstore and wish I hadn't. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-13 01:46:34 EST)

I read this book when I was going through week after week of morning sickness and it was one of the only things that brought a smile to my face. Jenny McCarthy tells it like it is and makes you feel like you're not alone. I completely related to many of her stories and feelings and I enjoyed her blunt and to the point writing style.

I like Jenny McCarthy's blunt- in your face sense of humor but apparently I was just used to seeing her on TV where the bleep out the swear words. I was looking forward to a book that tells it like it is but I was shocked at the language in this book, is it really necessary to include basically every swear word I've ever heard? NO! You can certainly get your point across without swearing- and it wasn't just a few times- there was probably a swear word on every page! The book was very short- I read it in about and hour and a half- It wouldn't have hurt to go more in depth in details. If you want an honest informative book thats actually much funnier than this- I would get The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy- it's hysterical!

I wish I would have read this book with my first child, because everything in it is sooo true. For me, it was really nice hearing that another woman was experiencing the exact same things I did, and that everything was completely normal. I was a little sceptical at first purchasing a book from Jenny McCarthy because I knew she was a good actress and entertainer, but I was not so sure about writer. Who Knew? She is Great! I also read baby laughs, which is very good too.
Well worth the money! And the fact that she donates a portion of the proceeds to charity makes it a no brainer purchase. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-10 20:19:48 EST)

If your looking for pregnancy details and getting down to all the technical mumbo jumbo this is not for you. I have not found one person that I gave this book to that did not think it was hysterical. Her honesty and crudeness about the realities of her pregnancy really tuned me into what to expect! It was such a great book. Baby luahgs is also just as funny. If you will not appreciate her sense of crudeness or are uptight you will not enjoy this book. Jenny is jenny in this book which I have grown to truly admire about her! It is a great and quick read and while it won't have every technical thing you can find in pregnancy its a good take on her pregnancy and her problems and experiences during her pregnancy! I promise you, you will laugh!

This book was chock full of curses and poop humor. I think the "shock value" was mainly to cover the horrible writing. Don't waste your money.

I laughed out loud. I have never been a huge Jenny McCarthy fan, but I am a fan of telling it like it is. And Jenny did just that! I laughed out loud while reading this book, and my husband would look at me quizzically. I even caught him reading some. It took me less than an hour to read, it's a short read, I didn't put it down so it must have been worth something! Great for anyone with a sense of humor.
I recommend. It is inexpensive and informative... and she did ease my mind on a few subjects! I will look forward to her Baby Laughs Book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-10 20:19:48 EST)

I am glad that someone who truly has a sense of humor and is funny wrote this book it wouldn't have been right coming from anyone else. Each chapter was like a chapter from my own pregnancy. I couldn't put it down a light read that I couldn't get enough of I am definitely going to purchase life laughs and baby laughs.

Pregnancy at times is completely ridiculous and no one recognizes this more than Jenny McCarthy. She takes you inside her pregnancy (and I do mean inside - hemorrhoids, constipation, vaginal discharge, you name it) and makes you laugh at every ridiculous thing she experienced, which you may be experiencing too. Her take on pregnancy is fresh, outrageous, and completely honest. This is the book every pregnant woman needs.

I read this in my second pregnancy when I was already aware of the naughty dreams, gas and freakish appearance a pregnant body takes on. If I had read it during my first pregnancy I would have found it much more informative. I really did not care for the order in which she talks about things, jumping from one subject to the next without any correlation or chronilogical order. I finished this book in a couple of hours, and afterword felt like I hadn't learned anything but did have a few laughs. If your on your first pregnancy, and are not put off by a graphic description of a pregnant vagina then you will probably enjoy this book. If you are looking for an acedemic read that aproaches things in a delicate way this book will horrify you.

I loved this book. I laughed at just about every chapter and read lots of excerpts to my husband who also laughed. I was not sure about this book since I generally have not liked Jenny McCarthy since her MTV days, but oh my god was this book funny. She really tells it how it is (or could be, I am 5 1/2 months along) and can sometimes be pretty graphic about it, so I guess it is not for the "easy to offend". She makes fun of herself and just makes you laugh at all the strange and bizzare things that happen during this "wonderful" time of pregnancy. I bought 3 books: this, girlfriends guide (hated it, 1/3 way thru, not finishing it) and Your Pregnancy Week by Week. This is the only one I finished by week 15, I had to because I wanted to laugh!

this book says it as it is. if you are trying to concieve this is a book that will give you the facts straight without the relish on top. i was shocked at times, since i found out many things about pregnancy not shared in the public but all in all i am glad that i read it as i now know what to exactly expect when im expecting. Its a light informative book that u can finish in a couple of hours and its a good start up book about conceiving and pregnancy.
i didnt give it 5 stars because of the chapters progression and not because of the facts stated. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-04 03:00:42 EST)

A colleague of mine recommended this book after she received it as a gift (we were pregnant at the same time). After reading all of the "technical" books about what happens to the female body during pregnancy, this book had me laughing out loud every evening I read it, putting a very funny twist to real life experiences. I will never forget "snail trails". It made describing to my husband what "new thing happened to me today" that much more entertaining when I could refer to Jenny's book description.
