I recently decided to start making jewelry, got on Amazon and started looking at book reviews. This one seemed to be really popular, so I ordered it sight unseen and I havent been disapointed. Its a beautiful book. Has great pictures and easy to understand directions and her jewelry is amazing. She shows you how to wrap wire around wire. She even shows you how to twist it using a drill. It does take a little practice to get good but what an awesome effect. She also shows you how to do twisted jump rings. I don't think anyone would be disapointed with this book. Another great one I found at book store was Creating Wire and Beaded Jewelry by Linda Jones.

(Hide Review...)  Great book, set me on fire!
Reviewer Permalink
When I ordered this book, I was looking mostly for some basic techniques to help me with some beaded browbands (for horse bridles) that I had gotten into making. While it was minimally useful for that, it sure inspired me! I rather promptly ordered some basic wire-working tools and I've spent way to much in the last few months on beads, tools and wire. I have a bunch of new earrings I love to wear, several new necklaces, I have designed pieces for most of my female Xmas giftees and I'm considering starting to sell my work! I honestly have to credit this book for a great deal of that, as the author's rather pure but very approachable perspective appealed greatly to me, and her instructions in the basic techniques were so followable, I jumped right into making my own designs without doing any of the projects verbatim, although I did use them for inspiration and pointers.

My style is not exactly the author's style, I find some of her pieces a bit too visually busy/fussy for my taste, but they are lovely and well made and I could not have asked for a better introduction to this new world of jewelry making. It's a pretty book, too!

If you are at all interested in an artistic approach to wire wrapping and beaded jewelry, I don't think you can go wrong adding this to your library.

(Hide Review...)  My two cents worth...
Reviewer Permalink
I read the other reviews and think what else is there to say...but I have to put in my two cents worth anyway. This was my second wire working book in my library (it has since grown to encompass other more advanced aspects of jewelry wire applications, particularly with chains and stone wrapping). And yet it is my FAVORITE to review techniques, practice some aspects that I don't use often, and more. Why? Because the detailed information AND wonderful photographs that go with the descriptions. The statement Miller makes on page 59 - "When it comes to designing and making jewelry, I always keep three principles in mind: creativity, wearability and durability." I now live by these words in my own designs and feel that Miller had and continues to have her finger right on the mark when it comes to jewelry design of the times. She shows us how to make each wire style correctly and strong. Her projects are all doable, utilizing techniques she describes in the first half of the book. The classic and probably timeless beauty of the pieces are first rate. I am thoroughly charmed, pleased with my purchase, and grateful for this reference/idea book that it really should be rated more than 5 stars. If you have to buy only one book on wire use in jewelry design - this is it!!!

This book is just what I was looking for... almost half is about wire techniques that really take beaded jewelry well beyond the basics. The instructions are very clear and the photos let you see every step of the process. The projects that comprise the balance of the book are interesting and really sparked my own imagination to create unique jewelry items.

Reviewer Permalink
I bought this book when it was published, and three years later, I still think it is probably the best book on beginning wire work out there. It has very clear, step by step instruction on the basic wire work techniques and some alternative methods of forming. The only mystery for me is how she manages to flush cut good jump rings from 14 gauge wire. When using 14 gauge wire or even 16 gauge, I always saw cut my jump rings. The result is much better -- at least for me.

I have checked this out from the library so many times and finally just decided to buy it. This book goes into more detail than all the others I have read about wire and bead jewelry. It is obvious she puts a lot of care and effort into her craft and shows you how to do the same. Even something as simple as making a spiral is refined in way to make a tighter nicer looking spiral (in my opinion). I refer to this book often.

There are so many photos in this book, that it is like having the instructor sitting next to you. I had no experience with wirework, and was able to create a very impressive gift for a good friend in one attempt.
It focuses a lot on hammering/flattening of the wire, which might require some tools that you don't have.

Every technique is illustrated with in-depth step by step photos! I would highly recommend this.

I am always increasing my library of jewelry artisan books. I have spent hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars on books that are poorly written and illustrated. Not this time! This book is fantastic. Sharilyn has truly outdone herself with beautifully illustrated step-by-step instructions. She has shown a particular stroke of genius in that she divides the book into two parts. The first part teaches the reader how to make their own wire findings. The second part uses those techniques to teach the reader how to assemble the jewelry. It is by far the most used book in my collection. Brilliant job Sharilyn!

Thank you, Sharilyn. I have been making eyepins for several years and finally found a book that shows it done the only way I have been able to master. Most books make a 90 degree then the 'eye'. I have never been able to to this. Besides making me feel better about my eyepins, this books is terrific. Well written, pictures are very graphic, shows how to do lots with very little investment in expensive tools. Just plain inspiration from start to finish. Recommend for all levels of beaders.

(Hide Review...)  The BEST instruction book for wire working
Reviewer Permalink
Sharilyn Miller's BEAD ON A WIRE was my first book on wire working. I practiced on copper for my first piece and the result was so good, I still wear it today and get many compliments. I now consider myself an experienced wire worker (selling and teaching) and I owe all of it to this book. The instructions are clear and truly step-by-step. There is at least one photo for each step along the way unlike many books which provide one photo of the finished product and nothing else. This book gave me a solid foundation for learning to work with wire. I mistakenly assumed that all instruction books would be as well-written as Ms. Miller's book. They are not; however, with what I've learned from BEAD ON A WIRE, I can look at most pieces of wire jewelry and reproduce it without any instructions. BEAD ON A WIRE is by far the best book I've come across for wire working. Excellent!

I'm about as addicted to beading books as I am to beads, and this is probably my favorite in my growing library. For me to buy a book, I have to really like a solid majority of the projects. In this one, there are only a couple that I don't see myself making. Every time I page through this book, I experience extreme bead and jewelry lust! As an intermediate wireworker, I don't pay a lot of attention to the introductory instructional sections of bead books (i.e., how to make jump rings, etc.), preferring to focus on the designs, but the instructions in this one are top-notch. The how-to photos are so good that you could make the items without even reading the text. So, even if you're an absolute beginner, I'd highly recommend "Bead on a Wire" for learning basic techniques as well as getting ideas. And if you're a little more advanced, like me, it serves as an excellent source of inspiration. Please, Sharilyn Miller, write more books!

Weather you are new to wire wrapping or have been doing for sometime, you will be thrilled with this book by Sharilyn Miller! The close ups in showing you how to do a technique is so clear that you think you are looking over her shoulder! After the techniques you go to her projects, again you will find yourself wanting to do everyone of them. She clearly tells you what tools and materials you will need, and then walks you through the project. I have many books on wire wrapping but not one compares to Bead On A Wire. If you like DVDs, Sharilyn also has a DVD named Tribal Treasures..that take you though every step to make this beautiful bracelet, the DVD is over 2 hours and you won't want to miss a minute of it. I can't wait until her next book comes out.

I really like this book. It has a great section on tools and materials. The basics are laid out in an easy-to-follow manner with lots of good pictures to demonstrate tool choice, usage, and technique. While many other books on the subject also contain sections on the basics, the information in this book doesn't feel stale or repetitive because there is also a lot of practical advice here, and I think readers of any skill level can learn something new and useful. Not many other books I've seen tell how to cut your wire, how to clean it, exactly how to hammer it, etc., etc. and why. In addition, this book contains a lot of really beautiful projects -- from simple to complex, romantic to abstract.
