Barefoot Contessa at Home : Everyday Recipes You'll Make Over and Over Again

Throughout the years that she has lived and worked in East Hampton, Ina Garten has catered and attended countless parties and dinners. She will be the first to tell you, though, that nothing beats a cozy dinner, surrounded by the people you love most, in the comfort that only your own home can provide. In Barefoot Contessa at Home, Ina shares her life in East Hampton, the recipes she loves, and her secrets to making guests feel welcome and comfortable.

For Ina, it’s friends and family–gathered around the dinner table or cooking with her in the kitchen–that really make her house feel like home. Here Ina offers the tried-and-true recipes that she makes over and over again because they’re easy, they work, and they’re universally loved. For a leisurely Sunday breakfast, she has Easy Cheese Danishes or Breakfast Fruit Crunch to serve with the perfect Spicy Bloody Mary. For lunch, she has classics with a twist, such as Tomato, Mozzarella, and Pesto Paninis and Old-Fashioned Potato Salad, which are simply delicious. Then there are Ina’s homey dinners–from her own version of loin of pork stuffed with sautéed fennel to the exotic flavors of Eli’s Asian Salmon. And since Ina knows no one ever forgets what you serve for dessert, she includes recipes for outrageously luscious sweets like Peach and Blueberry Crumble, Pumpkin Mousse Parfait, and Chocolate Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Icing.

Ina also lets readers in on her time-tested secrets for cooking and entertaining. Get the inside scoop on everything from what Ina considers when she’s designing a kitchen to menu-planning basics and how to make a dinner party fun (here’s a hint: it doesn’t involve making complicated food!).

Along with beautiful photographs of Ina’s dishes, her home, and the East Hampton she loves, this book is filled with signature recipes that strike the perfect balance between elegance and casual comfort. With her most indispensable collection yet, Ina Garten proves beyond a shadow of doubt that there truly is no place like home.

I've read from a few sources that among cookbook authors, Ina is by far the most thorough in testing her recipes, and I believe it--I use her books constantly, and I've never, ever had a dud. I do think that prior to her Paris book, some her recipes were getting a little stale (blueberry crumble... peach crumble... apple crumble...) and with this book she got her classic creativity back on track. Plus, of course, it's beautiful to just read through.

This is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. I love Ina's approach in using fresh ingredients. I always feel like I'm eating healthy (even dishes that aren't exactly low fat or low calories) when I cook her recipes.

I love her casual, calm approach on her show, and this style translates into her cookbooks as well.

I love watching INA GARTEN on the Food channel, and so I wanted to own at the very least one of her cookbooks. I previewed most of Ina's books and noticed that this one seemed to come the closest to replicating her well explained recipes from her TV show. Therefore, if you've ever seen INA on the FOOD Channel, you will notice that this book is just like having INA re-explaining her recipes via written communication.
I just LOVE Ina's soft and friendly voice, and the way that she explains each step on her show, thus, this book is almost exactly the same. I believe that as of January 2008, this is INA's latest cookbook (copyright 2006), so the recipes are very up-to-date.
The photos are extremely helpful because they show the end-product.

I only wish that for the price, INA had added just a few more recipes, because this book only comes in hardback form and therefore will cost you at the very least, over $24.00. (By the way, I paid full price of $35.00---ouch!).

I was very pleased with this cookbook. Many of Ina's recipes are not the kind of things I would make very often, but this book is different. It's still full of fancy recipes but they are simpler and more everyday in nature. Ina scores again!

I have three of her cookbooks, they are my mainstays probably because they don't require special ingredients. When company is coming I pull them out. The recipes in this volume are less festive and a tad more complicated than I expected. High calorie content as usual due to all the butter and cream but for special occasions, always get the applause.

If you're expecting an "everyday" cookbook, this is not the book for you. If you haven't watched Ina Garten's cooking show, you would not know her definition of "everyday" is more along the lines of "everyday gourmet" - or that she used to be a caterer, and so some of her recipes as a body of work are more in line with a fancy dinner party than anything else. I tend to look at this cookbook as my "fancy but simple" dinner/dessert book, rather than something that I would use on a daily basis. For that, I've the Women's Day Cookbook or How to Cook Everything. Also, Ms. Garten's definition of simple still assumes a level of pantry stock and/or shopping that might not be available in a non-urban area - a fault I find with a number of Food Network hosts' cookbooks. Furthermore, if you just started cooking, this may not be the book for you, as you might burn some dishes, as she does not point out that in the roast capon recipe, adjusting the temperature of the oven after twenty minutes might be a good idea. That said, the recipes are yummy, easy to follow, but I wouldn't count on this as an "everyday" sort of cookbook. Maybe "everyday I entertain".

By now you've all realized that rather than an inspired cook, Ina Garten is more of an assembler, haven't you?

I love Ina Garten's "Barefoot Contessa" series, and her books are certainly handsome to look at. We even drive the same black BMW 3-Series, and the Hamptons looks lovely, but while I adore Ina's personality and the lifestyle elements of her show, I think by now it's pretty clear that the contracts are in place and she's going to do a book a year, whether there's anything of interest to put in it or not.

I do love her -- she's very warm and pleasant to be around -- but if you want to learn how to cook, might I recommend John Ash's Cooking One on One and Alice Waters' The Art of Simple Food? That way you can just enjoy Ina's books as lifestyle books and pretty-to-look-at books.

If you've ever actually cooked anything in Ina's books I doubt you're going to be very impressed (or feel the need to make the recipe again). That's a bit disturbing, I feel, and I think that when one publishes a book that others will have to pay for -- and especially with even mundane (let alone quality) ingredients costing what they do these days -- they have an obligation to make all the recipes at least twice and to refine their instructions and correct any errors. This CLEARLY isn't done with Ina's books, and it's frankly very disturbing.

(Many is the time I've tried one of her recipes step by step only to find the cooking times way, WAY off, and fortunately it's only my own experience that saved the day -- I was frankly shocked that the directions could be that far off [and sometimes very vague] and sometimes just plain wrong. These books are clearly just thrown together, but who can blame her given the demands of her career. Ina should take a rest and come back to us in 3-4 years with something better.)

Bravo Ina! She has inspired me to really enjoy cooking all over again. I too have hundreds of cookbooks but very few stay in the kitchen/great room on a permanent basis so I can refer to them daily like Ina's do. I wish I had all her cookbooks on one DVD so I wasn't searching through them all to find the recipe I need but a minor inconvenience for sure. I just finished baking the Ultimate Ginger cookies and oh boy what a delicious treat they are! Pure heaven! And if you have a hard time finding Candied Ginger(it takes a lot) and sanding sugar you can get it here on Amazon.Taste Specialty Foods, Sliced Crystalized Ginger, 16-Ounce Jars (Pack of 2)India Tree Bright White Sparkling Sugar, 3.4-Pound Jars (Pack of 2)

Well, she's cooked up another classic cookbook again. This time the theme of the book is food you serve at home- not in your house. The book starts out by defining what a home is to her- and to tell you the truth, it sounds a bit like mine: it's not perfect by any means, and is, in fact, a bit cluttered. Cluttered not so much in a messy way, but rather with personal items which ultimately are responsible for making the house into a home.

And so it is with her delicious recipes. Laid out in different sections such as dinner, soups, etc., each section is prefaced by several pages of interesting info on a selected food or food preparation topic.

A very down-to-earth cookbook, it is laid out well, has great pictures, and you'll even notice that the pages have a thick, smooth feel to them. Also suggest The Sixty-Second Motivator if you have trouble sticking to a healthy diet.

I plan on trying the cakes, muffins etc. when Winter comes. I envy her her East Hampton lifestyle! One problem is the lack of definition of some measurments ie stick of butter. I look forward to using this book again and again

Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa series are so much more than just the recipes. Her warmth, wit and passion are all translated in the stories she shares with the readers as well as the great photos of the food and places she loves in East Hampton. At Home is her lastest cookbook and although my favoite remains Barefoot Contessa Family Style, I am pleased to have this one in my collection.
There are great tasting recipes, those that have become requested favorites are; Mustard roasted potatoes, blue cheese cole slaw, old fashioned potatoe salad, blue cheese burgers and buttermilk mashed potatoes to name a few. The real stars here are the desserts; Beatty's chocolate cake with chocolate frosting was a sensation at a birthday party, peanut butter and jelly bars and chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter icing are stand outs. But the main attraction was the coconut cake with cream cheese frosting I made for my son's 16th birthday. It was a spectacular presentation with rave reviews from all guests and most importantly my son. This latest of the Barefoot Contessa series although not my favorite is definetly worth the investment and you will make the recipes over and over as Ina Garten promises.

(Hide Review...)  Great recipes-But had to cut back on the sugar
Reviewer Permalink
This is another wonderful cookbook from Ina. Great illustrations of the food and great stories of her personal life and what she thinks really makes a house a home, as well as tips on entertaining, even how to design your own kitchen. I also loved the section in the back that gives the addresses and locations in the Hamptons of all the places she shops at for food. A lot of these places are shown on her Food Network show as well.

My only problem with some of the recipes is the amount of sugar that is called for. I make the lemon yogurt cake a lot which calls for a cup of sugar. I cut it back to a little under 3/4 cups because in this recipe you have to make a sugar syrup glaze to pour over the cake while its still warm and then you still have to make the icing to go on top of that. I also used lowfat yogurt, she calls for whole milk yogurt, but I find with the lowfat yogurt and a little less sugar that it still tastes great.

Her Coconut Cake also tastes good in this book, but again, it called for 2 cups of sugar. I cut it back to 1 1/2 cups and the icing calls for a pound of confectioner's sugar, which is the size of 1 box, I cut it back to about 3/4 of the bag. The cake tasted just a good with a little less sugar but be warned this is one RICH cake! 5 eggs and 3/4 pound (3 sticks)of butter for the cake and 2 sticks of butter and 1 block of cream cheese for the icing! Forget counting your calories with this one, but it is delicious, especially if you love coconut.

The Guacamole Salad is delicious and refreshing. Perfect for the summer to serve guests or as a light meal for your family. The vinagrette, made of lime juice, minced garlic and olive oil (and salt and pepper) really make this salad delicious. It calls for cayenne pepper and two jalapenos. I didn't want mine too spicy so I omitted the cayenne pepper and just did one jalapeno. It still had great flavor.

This is a great book. Ina always puts a real personal touch in her cookbooks in the way she writes. Coupled with great recipes, she's got a great formula for a great publication.

This was my first Barefoot Contessa cookbook and it will definitely not be my last. I admit, I'm a little skeptical of the "celebrity" chefs and their cookbooks, but Ina Garten really delivers with this collection of recipes. So far I've made the California BLT's, Mexican Chicken Soup, Pesto Pea Salad, Old Fashioned Potato Salad, Chicken Piccata, Herbed Basmati Rice, Jalapeno Cheddar Cornbread, and her great Bloody Mary. All were easy to prepare and very delicious. I like that she encourages the use of fresh, good ingredients, and includes a color photo and background story with each recipe. Now if only I had her gorgeous house and amazing parties to go along with all these new recipes!

So...........where do I start? The sharp, beautiful, glossy photography that entices you to make each delicious recipe? The welcoming and carefree pictures of Ina and Jeffrey's beautiful home that are the background for this book? The helpful hints and encouragement from Ina? The use of fresh veggies and fruit to make each meal so good to eat? It's hard to figure out which to place first, but regardless of where you want to begin, you'll find yourself at ease.

Ina just seems to get better and better with each volume of gastronomic delights, even when you think she has already given us the best. Her fifth venture into the publishing world is no less wonderful than her first four.

She has broken down her book into six main categories of cooking (soup and sandwich, salads, dinner, veggies, dessert, breakfast) then ties it all up with an interesting addendum of "if you're visiting the Hamptons" which is a tribute, of sorts, to all the lovely places she goes to in the Hamptons, to see and smell and taste and enjoy; much appreciated, good friend! The book flows as such:

INTRODUCTION
This is a really friendly introduction that helps you get caught up with her casual approach to planning, her path to this career change, and all the little hints and idea's that you can incorporate to make any get-together with family and friends all that more fun and memorable. She also gives you 2 quick recipes for getting guests to unwind and snack until all is ready for the main event, and they are Fresh Whiskey Sours, and Green Herb Dip. She then gives you a little help in how to plan your grocery list and the actual shopping.

The Contessa has done it again with this new collection of no muss, no fuss delicious recipes that are perfect for everyday or that special occasion or guest. I liked the cookbook so much, I bought 30 copies to give as gifts to my Interior Design clients.

I am a HUGE fan of Ina Garten's previous cookbooks,a nd eagerly gobbled this one up. But, some of the receipes in this book did not pan out too well for me. First, the seafood paella was not easy, and it did not turn out very tasty. I am not sure what happened, as I am a voracious home cook, and have presented many of Ina's previously pulished receipes, but this did not turnout too well. That being said, her couscous was delicious, as was her lamb kebabs. The hamburgers were average, although that pat of butter and egg yolk made the patties flavorful and rich.

First, I love Ina's demeanor and her experience. I have never tried a recipe that I didn't like. Second, this book has a lot of "added attractions" which prove it an invaluable book for the person who likes to cook and entertain.

It's a winner!

I have to admit that I have only recently begun watching Ina Garten on the Food Network, and I love her cooking show "The Barefoot Contessa". So, when I got this cookbook, I already knew that Ina's brand of cooking doesn't really fall into the healthy category as she uses a liberal amount of butter and salt, but as my grandma used to say, "That's what makes food taste so good!"...I do however tweak some of the recipes to make it healthier, and they are fine. I love the gorgeous pictures for the recipes, and the easy to prepare instructions...plus she has many interesting ideas for those of us who need to prepare a meal in a hurry, wish to entertain without the toil and sweat [dishes that can be prepared ahead of time], and the mouth-watering desserts are something else altogether! All in all, an excellent cookbook, with reliable recipes by a master chef!

I own all of Ina's recipes books and each one is wonderful. I have yet to have a recipe fail and everyone always asks me for the recipe after I serve it to them. This is my favourite recipe book to give as a gift, as it has a nice sample of her recipes.

These are easy recipes that you can actually use. I'm by no means a master chef, but these are quick and dirty recipes that you really will use a lot. Everything is really good due to a reliance on a lot of fat, but if you're cool with that, you'll be very happy with the purchase.

You know how you just love a CD when more than one song is good on it. You are ecstatic when you love all the songs, right? Well this cook book is like that. You'll hit homeruns with every recipe. LOVED IT INA - thanks.

I was disappointed in this book. Most of the recipes are standards that we all have in our heads.

I now own three of her cookbooks. Everthing I make is always a hit. She makes it easy and elegant. In "At Home" I mostly recently made the mini crab cakes and they were delicious.

The book itself is beautiful... the pictures spectacular!
