CHAPTER
1 A New Approach to Back Pain Back Pain Bulletin! If you-ve been suffering with back pain, we don't need to tell you just how bad it can get. It's an ordeal. You suffer, your family suffers, your friends suffer, your work suffers. Your whole quality of life can take a nosedive. There are millions of other people with the same problem, but that doesn't make it any easier to handle. We know that it's hard to believe, but the book you hold in your hands can help--and help a lot. It's about an exciting new approach to understanding and treating chronic back pain that integrates the very best from both "traditional" and "alternative" medicine so you can resume your normal life as soon as possible. It is based on an explosion of recent scientific research that leads to a whole new way of understanding and treating back pain that has become a chronic problem (lingered more than a couple of months). Simply put, the book makes three major points: 1. The cause of most chronic back pain is generally misunderstood by both sufferers and the medical community. It is usually thought to be the result of damaged or defective parts in the back. This is a perfectly natural assumption, but, strange as this seems, it simply isn't true. A great deal of scientific research has been done on chronic back pain, and the findings point in a completely different direction. So what does cause chronic back pain? The evidence tells us that while the problem may start with a physical injury or strain, those things usually heal quickly on their own. Tight muscles cause the pain to last, and stress is to blame for tight muscles--stress over pain, worries about the future, disappointments over unsuccessful cures, fears of surgery, anxieties about medical bills, problems at work, unhappiness over strained relationships. The pain is certainly not "all in your head." We know that it is completely real. Muscle tension and spasms can cause intense pain. 2. Most current back pain treatment methods don't work very well because they misunderstand the real cause of the pain. Again the research contradicts typical medical practice. If you are like most people, you've taken your back troubles to one or more doctors. You may have been told to rest, take medicine, or attend "back school." Perhaps you've tried special cushions, braces, physical therapy, a chiropractor, or even surgery. You're probably very careful to avoid reinjuring yourself. Some of these measures may have helped to a degree, but they probably haven't solved your problem entirely or you wouldn-t be reading this book. Conventional treatments miss the real cause of most back trouble-they simply don-t address the stress and muscle pain problem. Most treatments also emphasize "taking it easy," "trying not to hurt yourself," or waiting for the pain to go away before resuming activity. Yet all the research and our experience with patients show that a quick return to unrestricted physical movement is |

About 50 million Americans suffer back pain every year, and chronic back pain disables 1 in 40 adults. Back Sense takes a different approach, contending that most chronic back pain is caused not by a damaged spine, but by stress, muscle tension, and inactivity. The aim is to help you reclaim your life and decrease your pain.
The spine might be damaged initially, but it usually heals on its own, the authors assert. After that, stress causes muscle tightness, which results in continued pain. Traditional treatments don't work because they treat the spine, not the stress. The solution: understand your own symptoms and pain, learn to resume full activity, and work with your negative emotions to prevent them from derailing your recuperation. Part 1 of Back Sense helps you evaluate your own case and determine whether you have warning signs of a serious injury or disease (in which case you must get medical attention), understand the mind-body connection, and examine how stress may be causing your chronic pain. Part 2 teaches you how to bring full physical activity back into your life and manage your negative emotions. The authors--two of whom relieved chronic back pain with this very program--do not want you to baby your body or limit your life to protect your back. Rather, they contend that "being careful actually appears to be harmful." They explain that "as long as you are trying to get rid of pain, you stay preoccupied with it," creating more tension, and by avoiding "risky" movements, you lose muscle conditioning, making you vulnerable to additional injury. The book takes you through a process of gradually incorporating more exercise and tracking your reactions. The style is simple and friendly, and the book has many plan charts, logs, and other helpful tools. --Joan Price |

I have scoliosis - not severe enough for surgery, but bad enough to cause me pain. No book, doctor or chiropractor has helped me nearly as much as this book. Highly recommended.

I gave it to my father, who had a lumbar pain that was not proportional to the injury in the spinal discs he had. Even the neurologist said he didn't have anything, just a small protusion, but the pain persisted. So he read the book and, coincidence or not, in the middle of it, the pain dissapered! He liked very much the aproach, and is still enjoyng it!

After going to a conference on Psychotherapy and Mindfulness given by Dr. Ron Siegel, I was inspired to get his book. Having developed back problems (muscle spasms/ "my back went out") a year and a half ago, I was very interested in learning about his approach. While regular yoga has been extraordinarily helpful, I still considered my back vulnerable. This book has challenged this mentality. Since reading this book, I have successfully resumed activities that have I been avoiding since developing back pain. I am more aware of how worrying about hurting my back has made me afraid to use my back in certain ways, and am no longer giving into this worry. This book has changed my mindset regarding back pain and my body. This approach is empowering and I strongly recommend that anyone with a history of back muscle spasms read this book and adopt this method.
