Quick as promised service. This was a replacement for a lost delivery from a different source. They delivered as promised!

After having studied this book whole-heartedly for an entire semester, I feel that it just doesn't do a very decent job of relating the material in an inviting manner.

The topics are typically unorganized and almost seem to ramble, resulting in frequent, incoherent jumps. As such, I was forced to read and reread each and every sentence to try and follow the authors' intended message. Moreover, the authors' have seemingly tried to insert unnecessarily long words where their shorter, more easily understood counterparts would've more effectively conveyed the meaning of the text. After all, verbosity leads to unclear, incoherent things.

In conclusion, I would not recommend the purchase of this book. The authors' are not well versed in textbook construction as it seems they put less effort into instructing the students and more effort into writing an impressive-sounding, but generally over-inflated, book.

We use this book as the main textbook in my Genetics class. Although I agree that the problems at the end of the chapters are quite useful, I think most of the time the book never gets to the point.
1.Its historical facts sometimes make more than half of the chapters and it really annoys me, specially if I need to learn the concepts for next day.
2. Sometimes concepts are explained with examples, examples which may not be clear for everyone and may not help get the general idea.
3. The order of the book is kind of mixed, some concepts which have already been mentioned in early chapters are not explained until some chapters later.

As famous as this book is for Genetics, I do not recommend it for students like me who need to understand the concepts and apply them next day at a lecture and who have had already a good background of cellular and molecular biology.

I found this book to be confusing and hard to decipher at times!! I sometimes had to read the paragraph several times to get it and then I would find later in the book somewhere, what I was confused about was explained somewhat better. This book caused me to waste a lot of time trying figure out things. Perhaps better organization would be helpful. I wouldn't recomend this book.

The questions in the back of each chapter are really helpful. Sometimes the chapter itself is a bit vague. The chapter describing bacteria genetics was done very poorly. Even my TA agreed that the way it's written is hard for beginners to understand.

THe only thing this book lacks is a good explanation on ratios and Mendel. I find it isnt well organized in those chapters. The molecular basis chapters really are superb. Population genetics could have had a bit more information especially about genetic drift and speciation but I guess thats more evolution than genetics. A little wordy in the initial stages, the first chapter should have introduced meiosis and mitosis a little better. Morgan's experiment was also not well written, however everything else was fine. COmpare this to Mader's genetics and also Bruce Albert's molecular biology of the cell, if your course can do with either of these books then I would suggest get them instead of this. HUman genetics2 is also a good book and I hear the triple helix is great as well although I have not seen it. THis book is better than the Genes VII and VIII series, significantly better. In fact there is no comparision. This book is of a particularly high standing with only two themes lacking in explanation. I got a HD in molecular biology (DNA) and when I acutally did the 200 level genetics I found a little difficulty going along with this book esp in last minute preps. However I will keep this book although I value my Gould and Keeton more than this.

(Hide Review...)  Great Textbook of genetics

I used this Genetics textbook of Griffiths et.al when I was an undergraduate student at University of Michigan. The best part that I got from this book was its excellent problem sets given at the end of each chapter. Having taken several courses of Genetics, I believe that the best way to master this class is to practice as many problems as we can. This book is therefore a good start of a long road. Another strong part of this text is its clear and beautiful pictures. The authors may not use many words to explain the concepts but the pictures they show is spectacular. The organization is up-dated to balance between classical and molecular genetics. This book might be a bit expensive. yet it is worth having it if you plan to work in this field.

I have kept up with all of the editions of 'An Introduction to Genetic Analysis' since the first (a thin, red textbook that covered the bare basics of gene mutations and chromosome mechanics), and found every single one of them to be absolutely outstanding! I would recommend this as an introductory genetics textbook for every university that teaches basic genetics. There is enough material in this book to allow individual instructors to pick and choose which chapters and which subjects they would like to cover, without having to sacrafice anything. If you buy this book you have it all. It has chapters on basic genetics, chromosome mechanics, human genetic diseases, population genetics, genetic engineering, forensics, molecular biology, and biotechnology. No subject is neglected. It is well written, highly lucid, and VERY pleasing to the eye (with beautiful photographs and illustrations). Every chapter includes a problem solving section with solved problems. Therefore the instructor has the option of teaching either a conceptual course or a more problem oriented course. Problems range in difficulty from the trivial to the impossible. (Well, at least to the 'full pot of coffee and a bottle of asparin' level of difficulty.) These problems also represent a valuable resource from which examiners could potentially derive exam questions.) One can't say too many good things about these books. If the more recent editions are not available, but you have access to the earlier editions, I would still recommend using them. The basic material is so well dealt with that the older editions are still useful. Greg Doheny (Vancouver B.C.)
