Great book for people on the go who often stop at fast food joints or just like eating at restaurants. It helps me make the best choices when eating out. I was surprised by some of the calories and fat in the foods I ate. Salads are not always the best choice.

The information in this book is wonderfully helpful for planning before dining out. However, it is mostly fast-food information, rather than actual restaurants. Though the difficulty in assessing dietary exchanges in restaurant settings was explained, I hope that a future edition of this book would include more information from restaurants.

I consider this book to be a completely indespensible resource for a diabetic. I've found this book to be useful in two different ways: #1 for just browsing through some of the restaurants and menu items to give you an idea about nutritional information in general. For example, you can peruse through a listing like "Starbucks" and learn how many carbs are in their various beverages, and then common things like bagels. Maybe you don't even like going to Starbucks, but such information is essential to know wherever you do go.
The second way this book is useful is to just pop in your suitcase or in your car when you travel. That way it just takes all the guesswork or awkwardness out of situations where you need to eat out, perhaps at restaurants you are not so familiar with. Just a quick glance at this book will tell you what will work for you and what won't. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-05-10 00:29:52 EST)

Even though fast food gets a bad rap, there are ways of eating healthier when having to eat out and this book shows you how. Sometimes foods may look better or worse than they seem because of hidden ingredients or factors you may not think of. This book helps you find the real numbers for a large variety of chain restaurants/fast food and takes the guesswork out of carb counting. I have my favorites marked with paper clips. I don't eat out without it.

My dad bought this book to assist his diet concerning his diabetes, but I am disappointed with it, namely because it does not have a SUGAR column on its Fast Food tables of Menus! I understand that carbs add up to becoming sugar and such, but why did they not list Sugar in a book for diabetics!
It puts a best bet check mark by different menu items, but I get the impression that these are merely the lesser evils on the fast food menus. Unfortunately, my dad sees the check marks and insists that these are healthy food items for him, for example, the Wendy's Jr. Frosty! I think that most people can just go online to their most favorite fast food restaurant web sites and download the nutritional information there, which will include the sugar content! I did that with the Wendy's Jr. Frosty and found out it has 21g of Sugar! If my dad saw that on a Nutritional Label on a grocery store item, he would refuse to buy it! I wish I had been with him when he was shopping and bought this book, because I would have pointed out this major omission of Sugar information that is lacking in this book! This book may have its uses when used properly, or for folks who don't care about their Sugar intake, but from my experience with my elderly father who desperately needs to eat RIGHT for his diabetes, this book is making it harder for me to get him to do so! This book lists more than 5,000 food items at 60 major chain restaurants (both fast food and sit-down). I've found it to include even the most recent menu additions of my favorite restaurants. It gives clear, concise, easy-to-read nutritional information and food exchange counts. I use this book constantly, and also highly recommend "The Complete Guide to Convenience Food Counts" by Lea Ann Holzmeister (great for meal planning & supermarket trips). These two books put together contain virtually every item of food I look for, and I recommend both without reservation to anyone on a food exchange diet plan.

This is an excellent guide for helping you eat healthy food at restaurants. The restaurants listed are many of the major chain restaurants, especially fast foods. In addition to hamburgers and pizza, Denny's and Baker's Square are included to help you find nutrition information you can use for coffee shops in general.
PRO: The only book I've found that includes American Diabetic Association Exchange Diet information in addition to information on other nutrients for other diet or food plans. Cons: The only criticism I have of this book (and a minor criticism at that) is its lack of information about Greek or Japanese restaurant food because they are not chain restaurants. Nevertheless, this book is quite extensive in giving you the nutrition information on many foods found in popular restaurants. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 18:00:33 EST)

This is a great reference book to have on hand if you eat out in restaurants often. I finally am living in an area where most of the restaurants listed in the book can be found. I really need to get another one to keep in the car.

This volume had detailed nutritional data (calories, fat contect, fat grams, sodium, cholesterol content, etc.) on many fast-food items. Included are common items from McDonalds, Wendy's, Arbys, Taco Bell, KFC, Subway, Hardee's, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts to name a few. Also included the equivalent food exchanges for the foods listed.
For many restaurant chains it highlights some of the 'healthier' items available. The data has been compiled on many items from these restaurants, but not every menu selection is listed. A useful guide to keep at your desk or in your car to assist in making healthier eating decisions. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 18:00:34 EST)
