I wish to write a favorable review of "America Fights Back: Armed Self Defense in a Violent Age" in spite of and because some who purchased this text found fault with the works technical and structural language. I find absolutely no fault with the depth of information and statistics that each Mr Gottlieb and Mr Workman provide the average reader. My impression of this book with reference to its design is that it is more content based rather than an elegant and scholarly piece that all 2nd Amendment supporters can refer to as "the Bible" on gun laws and firearm usage - but it very well one day MAY become just that.
"America Fights Back:" is a straightforward well written segment of this writing teams on-going research. The content is presented straightforwardly, in an unbiased fashion, and the authors present statistical data, true to life situations and law in a clear light - the type of light which especially provides material for Pro-2nd Amendment scholars, Middle-Americans, hunters and even lawmen/women to counter the negative onslaught of anti-gun propaganda plaguing our nation for so long. Every sound piece of research has to begin somewhere and it is my belief, based upon my having read several pieces authored by these two gentlemen, that their beautifully edited, skillfully crafted and phrased next publication will satisfy even those most stringent critics who obsess over structure rather than content -- or the 2nd Amendment as it is written in our Bill of Rights itself. The two men Gottlieb and Workman are not trying to influence the reader of anything with their books - the data that they include provide the reader with a breath of fresh air and several rational and logical opposing but extremely sensible flip-side of the gun debate coin making the job of deciding for ones self much, much easier. I will end with saying that anyone else who can write a better book will have to use the same data anyway -- so I look for copycat texts in the future. Until then, I will continue reading the works that these two devoted and fact intensive authors produce. I like this work "America Fights Back: Armed Self Defense in a Violent Age" due to language use that is easy to read and understand while also being geared for several age groups. Relax, pull up a chair and enjoy it -- it is well worth the read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-03-17 06:13:15 EST)

If you like the "Armed Citizen" column in the NRA's "American Rifleman" magazine this is right up your alley. It details accounts of armed "good guys" responding to "bad guys" in various scenarios.
If only we could get our legislators to read this (or similar books) we would likely get pro-gun self-defense laws passed more readily. A good read! (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-16 07:20:17 EST)

This is a very disappointing book for several reasons. First, the authors devote way too many pages to anecdotal stories about people who have defended themselves with guns. Naturally, anyone would expect some stories to add interest in a book about armed defense in America. But the first half of this book is nothing but one story after another. It does not take a genius to understand the concept that having a gun can save your life. Secondly, when the authors finally get around to discussing some of the ethical and legal issues surrounding gun ownership and self-defense they throw out only a few facts and then start back in with lengthy anecdotal stories. They spend very little time actually discussing the complexity of the issues. And they don't even mention how you can become a defendant in court after shooting an attacker. They tell several stories about people shooting at attackers who are already leaving the scene with no mention about how you could be prosecuted for shooting at someone who no longer poses a threat. They are far more interested in telling how another "scumbag" (a word they love to use to describe various criminals) is stopped or killed by someone owning a gun. There is absolutely no mention of what can happen to you after you have shot and/or killed an assailant. What little information the authors really do convey about issues pertaining to the right to carry arms and self-defense could have been easily written in a magazine piece. In fact, this book reads very much like a magazine article that was filled up with a bunch of stories to sell a book.
If you are interested in a book that discusses the case for armed self-defense and all the legal and ethical issues surrounding it, this is not the book to buy. A far better book is The Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, and Shoot a Gun in Self Defense (Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, & Shoot a Gun in Self Defense) by Chris Bird. It will tell you everything you need to know. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-10-06 02:34:22 EST)

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It did not go overboard with stats and the true life stories were compelling. I'm a firm believer that everyone has a right to defend themselves and this book shows why the first person you should always depend on is yourself.

Well written, well documented book. Some repetition, but usually to make a specific point. Well worth the money, especially considering the junk that is out there in print.

Alan Gottlieb and Dave Workman make a noble effort in "America Fights Back" but the book is seriously flawed, in my opinion. That's surprising because the authors have very impressive credentials. In fact, Alan Gottlieb's credentials are so long that I don't have time to list them here and I wondered where he found the time to achieve so many things in his life as I read his resume. As a personal note, I want to make it clear that I am a strong 2nd Amendment supporter, a life member of the NRA, The Illinois Rifle Association, a new member of The Second Amendment Foundation (which Gottlieb founded), and a member of a couple other gun-rights groups. In short, I completely agree with the points made in this book and my viewpoint is biased.
Before I discuss what I believe are the serious flaws of this book, I will describe its thrust in one sentence: Basically, one case after another of an armed law-abiding citizen stopping a criminal attack is described, interspersed with commentary about the various issues involving gun control. My criticisms: The stories become repetitive and redundant quickly and I found myself wishing that the authors would have written more about the underlying issues. The book almost read like 200 pages of the monthly column "Armed Citizen" that is in NRA publications except that the NRA does not express the obvious joy that the authors of this book clearly feel about the shooting of a criminal. After the 100th story about someone shooting a criminal while defending themselves, my eyes began to glaze over. I felt like saying, "O.K! I get the point!" But I already understood the point! Secondly, the book is poorly written and edited. It is riddled with grammatical errors, punctuation errors, sentence structure errors, and even spelling errors. This does not represent the cause well and could give the wrong impression to readers who are making their own decisions about gun control. I was going to include a couple examples of that very poor writing but I honestly couldn't choose from among them. Virtually every page - almost every paragraph, in fact - is riddled with writing errors. I found myself wishing that the authors would have sent me the book for proof-reading! Some of the errors may have occurred during publishing but some of them were simply poor writing. I winced at some of them and I quickly realized that this is not a book that I would recommend to someone who is on the fence on gun control issues. In fact, I am not even recommending this book to my wife who is also an NRA member. In addition to that, the authors constantly use cliché's that become very irritating after a while. The book has a "Make my day!" tone to it that is not good for the cause of gun-rights advocates. Another criticism is that, in one of the very first self-defense shooting descriptions of the book, the authors mention that the perpetrator of a criminal attack was an African American. Now, nobody is more sick and tired than I am of political correctness but there was absolutely no reason to mention the man's race. After all, nowhere in the book do they mention that a perpetrator was white. I am not suggesting in any way that the authors are racists but I am saying that they should have used better judgment. It was totally unnecessary and could easily be taken wrong and it, along with many of their other comments made in the book, could give someone the impression that the authors might be bitter, racist, red-necks. In fact, they don't even hide their delight at the fact that yet another "scumbag" was killed. Don't get me wrong: I agree in principle with what they are saying but their style could damage the very cause that they promote. Now, if they gave a statistical breakdown of criminal activity by race, that would be acceptable. But if I was an African American reader, that comment would have offended me. In fact, it offended me and I'm white! The authors should remember that we need to enlist the African American community in this cause and African Americans probably have more at stake in self-defense issues because they tend to live in larger cities with more prevalent crime. That said, it should be remembered that most people who read this book are almost certainly supporters of the 2nd Amendment already. For them, this book will not change their minds. It will just confirm what they already think. The important readers to reach are the people who are gathering information on the subject but haven't yet decided what their position is. Some of those people may respond positively to this book but I think that many will be turned off by what they read. Supporters of the 2nd Amendment should strive to make a good impression on those they are trying to influence. They should present their case thoughtfully and respectfully and they should certainly have a high degree of literacy - or at least a good editor! I have seen far too many instances where gun-rights writers put their worst foot forward and hurt the very cause that they are trying to promote. In fact, some articles I have read including an almost unbelievable and absolutely absurd and irresponsible article in The Illinois Shooter a year or two ago (the newspaper of the Illinois Rifle Association) could easily be used by gun-ban groups for propaganda purposes. Unfortunately, that is the case with this book to some degree. But for readers who are already 2nd Amendment supporters and don't mind rather poor writing, this book may have some useful information for them. As for myself, I didn't learn anything new. But I do applaud Gottlieb and Workman for their tireless efforts on behalf of 2nd Amendment supporters and law-abiding gun owners. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-29 09:12:50 EST)

Finally there's a book that covers not only the Second Amendment, but the myths of gun control, `gun free zones' with hard facts that must be giving the Brady Campaign and other anti-Second Amendment groups nightmares. While it's not a comprehensive look at the case supporting the individual right to keep and bear arms, this one hits the high points nicely with examples taken directly from today's headlines.
This is a book that needs to be read by everyone in America as it deals with the reality of violence and gun ownership in America. A reality that far too many in the media fail to recognize, even in light of the recent Heller decision - to the extent of calling for the repeal of the Second Amendment. This book shows not only how incorrect, but how dangerous their Pollyanna notions of ending the violence by disarming the public are. Run, do not walk, to your bookstore and pick this one up! As a supporter of handgun rights, I am aware that Gottlieb and Workman have written several books and that they together account for the braintrust behind the Second Amendment Foundation and Gun Week, an Internet and print publication. The information in America Fights Back is good, but is sketchily organized to say the least. My major complaint with the book, however, is that the writing is atrocious. I commend the authors for wanting to write this book and for the other work and works they do in support of the right to keep and bear arms, but producing book after book (I assume their other works are similarly inept as I doubt they would jointly chuck their writing skills on a single book) it would seem to me that they might, at some point, learn how to write readable paragraphs, or decide to engage a competent editor to come to work at Merrill Press, or--even better--hire an accomplished ghost writer to organize their disjointed information into something that resembles literature. As titular spokepersons for supporters of the 2nd Amendment, I would ask that they speak well and represent those of us who also support gun rights by producing literature that expresses their well-held opinions with a modicum of eloquence.

all the stories of great Americans using their guns to fight back against their families, co-workers, and fellow students by shooting them dead. Also the stories of great Americans defending themselves against mall shoppers by shooting them dead. Not to mention the stories of great Americans defending themselves against *themselves*...by shooting themselves dead.

Excellent book. We are given true stories of individuals that escaped being seriously hurt or killed by criminals because they were armed. This book gives us information which the liberal press refuses to give. If the majority of people had this information, we would probably see more folks buying a firearm and learning to use it.

Most reports in the book are from 2000 to the middle of 2007. Some are a little older as the one where Kip was subdued by 4 unarmed students. One of the reports was from my area, I remember when it happened. The message is you do not have to sit and wait to be killed when you are in a gun free zone.

This is an amazing book about those who have survived and won the worst of fights. Also, It informs us of the need for media to report the truth. If you have ever had reservations about firearms or believed they are something evil this book should open your eyes about the redeeming qualities of firearm use by law abiding people. When a threat so great as that by the media and anti-gun groups is at a constant, this book alone should convince anyone why they should be armed and armed at all times. This is an amazing piece of work that has been long overdue. This should be a must read for all people who are concerned with there personal safety and what they need to do to secure it! If any one book slams gun control into it's place, this book is it!

America Fights Back will help the reader realize that the police are not required to protect an individual from harm, but that we are the first line of defense in protecting self, family or neighbors and we must be ready, willing and able to see that the bad guy, as Massad Ayoob said, is making a fatal error in the victim selection process. Not a "how to" book but the best argument as to "why" we should arm ourselves and take responsibility for our own safety.

I KNOW I NEVER THOUGHT I'D GIVE A BOOK ON THIS SUBJECT ONLY 2 STARS!
WITH 5 STARS I SUPPORT WHAT THE AUTHORS ARE TRYING TO CONVEY TO THEIR READERS. I FOUND THE WRITING VERY PREDICTABLE AND RIGHT OUT OF MY NRA AMERICAN RIFLEMAN'S MAGAZINE "ARMED CITIZEN." IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS SUBJECT THEN I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, OTHERWISE FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO READ ON "AMERICA FIGHTS BACK." (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-27 17:58:40 EST)

America Fights Back should be required reading for every student of American history and our culture's values. We, ultimately, are responsible for our own fate and the wise use of firearms for self protection is more important now than it ever has been. Freedom loving people will never sacrifice their liberty for the sake of "safety". To rely on the government to keep us safe, after we have disarmed, is the most sure path to tyranny. This book explains how and why we must remain armed to defend ourselves and families, how it has been done most successfully and if you really want to have control of your destiny, never give up your arms. Those who wish to be in control of us all, will never be successful if we protect our most precious second amendment. This book should be in every true American's library, no matter what race, creed, or color.

"America Fights Back" is a compilation of significant information what ordinary citizens can do to fight violent crime. As Americans if we don't hold dear our constitutional right to the 2nd Amendment, then we will no longer be citizens but rather subjects as in Britain.
Britain has seen a profound escalation of violent crime over the years. This phenomena has taken place despite a handgun ban for over ten years and strict controls over longarms. The average Britain no longer trusts law enforcement to be responsive for crime. As early as 1971 Cambridge U. released "Firearms Control" by Colin Greenwood. The study demolishes the myth that gun control equals crime control. It shows that earlier in the century Britain had far less crime when there were no gun laws. Further, it showed that culture and social mores affect crime levels. Again, in 2001 the King's College of London's study "Illegal Firearms in the UK" concluded the same. "America Fights Back" is a book that the average citizen must be aware how it impacts us as a society and how we can impact our own society. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-04 07:51:33 EST)

The perfect companion to John Lott's book, "More Guns, Less Crime".
While Lott's "M.G., L.C." is laden with facts and statistics to prove that the private ownership and possession of arms reduces crime, this new book, "America Fights Back: Armed Self-Defense in a Violent Age", relates "war stories" to reinforce this truth and the principals involved with the individual responsibility of defense of self. The police are for taking reports and restricting individual freedom as an agency of the state. Think about it, a criminal breaks the law, the police take a report, and if the criminal is caught, their freedom is restricted. If the state decides that any freedom not restricted in the Bill of Rights should indeed be restricted, then it will be the police that enforces these rights restricting laws as well. Remember, it is the right to arms that ensures all of our other rights, and all of our other freedoms. Including freedom from a tyrannical government. This book reinforces with reliable statistics the truth that "more guns equal less crime". In my own lifetime I have used a firearm twice in self defense. Fortunately, I did not have to fire it, but just its presence warded off my attackers. We second-amendment type women have a saying: "No one ever raped a .38!" This book reinforces that fact and that this is true in dealing with all types of crime. Jessica Mary Buck

Mr. Hayhoe could not have read, purchased or digested this book, for he vilifies his hatred solely by the title. His anti-gun agenda is evident through and through, so that is what's selling this book to more and more people, as well as NRA members.
Right-To-Carry has become a serious need in our country, as you cannot have an armed cop riding along with you everywhere you go. This book gives you some serious instances and REALLY makes you think. If Hayhoe had REALLY read it, he'd be shaking in his Florida "sandles" right about now! Good book that solidifies much of the lunacy of the gun control crowd based on the telling of the outcome of many armed and unarmed encounters. It also gives credit to the Virginia Citizen's Defense League (VCDL) for pushing the National Park concealed Carry Ban repeal (pg 159 and 164). A truth, I doubt, the NRA will ever admit.
At 198 pages it is a quick read and it can help you learn some particulars on cases that you have read about but have been distorted a bit in the retelling. This is a good 'baseline' read for anyone wanting to get a better understanding of what some would call the inflexibility of the pro-gun organizations (National: GOA, JPFO. State VCDL, Buckeyefirearms(I think)) and why they are that way. Over all it is just more proof that Guns SAVE Lives! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-21 10:14:59 EST)

I came here to report that this book is being advertised in illegal email spam, an offensive tactic. The one I received today was criminally relayed through a computer in Argentina and contained numerous header forgeries, all making it a violation of the CAN-SPAM US anti-spam law.
If the authors are attempting to boost awareness and sales, they chose a particularly nasty method to do it, placing themselves in the same boat as spammers for porn, pills, and mortgage refinancing. Shame on them. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-13 11:03:54 EST)

Rich Mason in his one star review posted.....
"A great read for paranoid and violent Americans. If you see a bogeyman behind every bush and think the only answer to the violence in our society is more violence, this is the book for you. If you're a fan of the politics of hatred, you might also enjoy it. The only reason I'm even writing this review is because I received an unsolicited spam e-mail directing me to this product. That shows me the level of discomfort felt by the gun-toting crowd or at least that this book is nothing but a gimmick from its authors used to prey on the pocketbooks of the paranoid crowd"..... Then Arthur Hayhoe in his one star review just went into the old, tired socialist/leftist rant. The same type of rant that has led millions to slavery and death. I fear the Rich Mason's and Arthur Hayhoe's of the world much more than I fear the physical attacker. They claim to be the "open minded" of our society yet all the facts in the world mean nothing because they are so "open minded" their brains fell out long ago. They use terms like "politics of hatred" "hate speach" and the like, attempting to make themselves the person who will decide who speaks and who does not and what is worthy of print and speach and what is not (Liberal Fascism by Goldberg). When it comes to them speaking out against those who support the 2nd Amendment and our other Freedoms given by our Creator and not government, each time you hear or read them uttering the terms "gun lover", "gun nut", "2nd amendment nut" and the like, just insert the word "Jew" instead and you start to see the foundation of where their beliefs come from. The world has been full of those who seek to be the master over the slave and always will be. Fear the Rich Mason's and Arthur Hayhoe's, the enemy within who comes with the smile, outstretched hand and the word friend on their lips. They have many labels to put upon those whom they disagree with but will never have any argument of substance. They look for the weak minded who will be afraid to be pinned with their labels, who will quickly fall to their will and hand their freedom over to an all great government (where have we seen this before in history). Fear the Rich Mason's and Arthur Hayhoe's, those who hate your freedom. Listen as they laugh when you claim your freedom comes from your Creator and not government. Look at what happened in New Orleans after Katrina when the Rich Mason's and Arthur Hayhoe's had their will forced on many in the city. Imagine that on a grand national scale? The open hand approaching and saying friend to the older lady and turning on her in a moment and beating her when she showed she was exercising one of her rights granted to her by her Creator. Fear the Rich Mason's and Arthur Hayhoe's who say you cannot fight violence. What person can be met with violence but is not allowed to respond in defense? A slave. They love people expressing their freedoms they way OJ loved Nicole. This is my not read the book yet review in response to Rich Mason's and Arthur Hayhoe's they are never going to read the book reviews and I give this book 5 stars for standing up to the Rich Mason's and Arthur Hayhoe's with the truth and for helping reveal who they really are, just look at their reviews and responses to reviews for a small part of that. This is a must read. It is a fact that all Americans need to arm themselves for self defense reasons. Don't be fooled by the anti-gun folks. They have no basis for trying to take away your 2nd amendment rights. Gun free zones = shooting galleries. Americans have a right and a duty to defend themselves.
Gottlieb is right on the mark with this book.. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-04 21:21:23 EST)

In case you don't know who wrote the only negative review:
"Arthur Hayhoe is the executive director of a group calling itself the Florida Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Inc., a well funded anti-gun organization that has received grant funding from the extremist Americans for Gun Safety. AGS is a Trojan horse gun control group that has had to change its name to the less-onerous "Third Way" in order to keep fooling people about its mission. Americans for Gun Safety is bankrolled by millionaire anti-gunner Andrew McKelvey, former board member of Handgun Control, Inc., which became the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Connect the dots!" (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-01 22:07:07 EST)

If Arthur Hayhoe is going to politicise what should be a neutral and objective book review process, all to further his anti-gun agenda, then I am afraid I must protest his tactics by creating my own countervailing 5 star review - and I have not even read the book yet! But I most certainly will.
Mr. Hayhoe, we are going to win the Heller case whether you like it or not. The Bill of Rights is not a smorgesboard from which you can pick and choose those rights with which you agree. It is an all or none proposition. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-01 22:07:07 EST)

The authors have ripped this book straight from the headlines. It's a good read for gun folks as well as fence-sitters on the issue of guns. Freedom-loving Americans will like it too. The book flows well and the chapters are thought provoking. This book builds a good case for armed self-defense in the modern world.

Should be required reading. The value of the victim is often overlooked in the equation of defense. Mothers, daughters, wifes and husbands are valuable and should be given every option to live through a violent encounter.

America Fights Back: Armed Self-defense in a Violent Age I very much enjoyed this book. It is very straight forward. It is full of facts and examples of people defending themselves by being prepared. Anyone that reads this and still does not see the benefits of armed citizens will never change. They have already closed their mind to the subject and refuse to see that there is another side to the issue. I feel sorry for them. To go through life so closed minded and can't understand why anyone would think any other way then the way they do.

This book offsets the pervasive lie that firearms are rarely used in self defense. In fact, several university-level studies have shown that guns are used in self defense as many as three million times each year in the U.S.
It's a hoot that Authur Hayhoe of the Florida Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, an anti-gun rights group, would post a a negative review (complete with misspellings) If you wonder whether people actually do use guns to protect themselves and their families, read this book! From their own mouths, people describe how they were able to save their lives as well as the lives of family members, because they had a legal firearm. The "Flat Earth Society" anti-gun rights folks like to pretend this isn't true, but real reports such as in this book ring true. If people are doing it, it's hard to convince the public that it never happens. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-27 09:56:07 EST)

There is absolutely nothing mew in this book! This is just a rehash of all the old and very stale gun lobby arguements that can be found in any number of books published by supporters of the gun lobby. Far to many very intellegent people accept these arguements without examining the evidence. For example the assertion that concealed carry has reduced crime. The only people who make that assertion is the NRA and the rest of the gun lobby. There is no organization in this county, with a reputation to protect, that has or would make such a statement. There is no evidence concealed carry has reduced crime anywhere and there is some disturbing evidence it has facilitated crime. Save your money and just look at the first book like this you bought. You will get the same arguements! However, for gun lobby supporters this book hits all the hot buttons for gun rights activitists who support the gun lobby. For them this would be a good read. When this type of book is published you always see several supporters of the gun lobby telling you how great the book is. Helps sales for sure. [

I picked this book up based upon a recommendation at an "open carry" web site. I am a gun owner and have always understood that the Constitution protects my individual right to own and carry a firearm. However, I thought it might be good to read a contemporary book on the issue and found these authors presentation of the current state of the debate refreshing. They weave in a fantastic review of real life stories of those who exercised their right to defend themselves and others.
The author addresses all of those trite sound bites we so frequently hear trotted out by the liberal papers and "mainstream" media outlets universally opposed to firearms. Both of the authors are consummate professionals in the firearms business and active in the defense of our second amendment right. I must admit, the most poignant thing I learned from this book is just how often American citizens use firearms for self defense and the defense of others. Even when exercised, our right to defend ourselves is never noted in the media. So many of us have lost the collective individualism (sounds odd, but it works - each American a self reliant individual yet working together as one nation) that made this nation the most powerful in the world. If you aren't a gun owner, after reading this book you may become one. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-20 09:46:30 EST)
