Why has Mark Steyn's book "America Alone" been labeled "alarmist" by his opponents? Look at the title: America Alone. Its meaning is obvious, but concerning what? When the Soviet Union fell, America was left standing as the sole super power in the world. But that is not the meaning of America Alone. However, do you remember what Nikita Kruschchev said? America would fall from within, without one shot fired. America would destroy herself through societal softness and the Soviets would walk in and take over.

Steyn states that Muslims have adopted this concept of a country falling from within, beginning in Europe. Through immigration, Muslims are establishing themselves as a stronghold. Belgium, Sweden, England, Denmark, the Netherlands, and France are on their way to becoming majority Muslim and geo-political. In fact, he says, Eurotopia is fast becoming "Eurabia."

Three events are rapidly leading to Eurabia:
1. Demographic decline
2. The unsustainability of the advanced Western social-democratic state
3. Civilizational exhaustion

Do you remember years ago forecasters urged population control? Europe heeded this warning and now faces two factors that will change it drastically: its population is aging and couples are not reproducing themselves. According to Steyn, these are the statistics of the population under the age of 15: Spain and Germany--14%, United Kingdom--18%, the United States--21%. On the other hand Saudi Arabia's 15 and under is 39%, Pakistan--40%, and Yemen--47%.

Who is reproducing themselves: the US at 2.1 babies per couple, Niger at 7.46, Mali at 7.42, Somalia at 6.76, Afghanistan at 6.69, Ireland at 1.9, New Zealand at 2.11. There are Germany and Austria at 1.3, Russia and Italy at 1.2, and Spain at 1.1. Those with birthrates over 2 are Muslim; those under Caucasian Christian.

With an aging population and declining birthrate and a swelling benefits package supplied by the government, who will pay for this social welfare? Answer: incoming immigrants with high birthrates.

Therein, Steyn says, lies the problem. While people of Europe have abandoned their churches and religious beliefs, Islam immigrants bring with them "a religion, and an explicitly political one." In fact, if a European wants to marry a Muslim, he must convert, or as they call it, revert. Muslims believe that everyone is born Muslim--he/she must find that calling. And no one may leave the religion.

How pervasive are Islam and Muslims in Europe? "Go to any children's store in Amsterdam or Marseilles or Vienna or Stockholm. Look at women in headscarves or full abaya. That's the future" (21).

Remember the Kruschkrev comment? This is what Col. Gaddafi once said: "There are signs that Allah will grant Islam victory in Europe--without swords, without guns, without conquests. The fifty million Muslims of Europe will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades" (36) Steyn gives example after example of how Islamists are taking over, first neighborhoods, then schools, then city governments, then the country.

For example, in 2003, Abdurahman Alamoudi, helped devise a three-week course taught in California's public schools in which students adopted Muslim names, wore Islamic garb, memorized suras from the Koran, recited prayers and so on. Another place Islamists are targeting is the prison population in America, Australia, and Western Europe, seeking reverts. Where there is a religious void as in prisons and Europe, Muslims seek to fill the void with a rigorous religion.

Steyn quotes Imam Zaid Shakit as wanting the United States to become Muslim; however, he sees it as a country with Muslim civil institutions, sharia, a complete way of life. As a country's population dies out and immigrants replace them, a nation's collective past also dies and is replaced with a new.

In France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden, riots over equal rights have disturbed traditional peace. Women feel safer walking neighborhoods in Muslim garb in order to be left alone by Muslim men. When Muslims take over, they take the land and distribute it to Muslims, creating reverts out of the native people. Because the United States doesn't take land, Muslims consider the US weak and defeatable. As Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong of Singapore said in 2004, " The central issue is America's credibility and wil to prevail" (176).

Steyn concludes in outlining America's exceptional nature and how it can prevent Muslim reversion of an entire country. It is not too late! Reading this book can provide invaluable information necessary for action.

In the process of reading this book, I met a military family just back from England. The wife verified everything Steyn says in this book. She says England is quickly becoming Muslim and that violence is becoming common. They were very glad to leave when they did.

If you are interested in at least what part of the future will bring, read this book. I ordered 3 copies to pass around to friends who want to understand what is coming. It's based on fact BTW, not on speculation.

Mark Steyn writes a series of compelling essays that are both frightening and enlightening. Why is America's way of life being slowly eroded away by liberal activists that hide behind the shield of liberty? Our way of life is being changed by immigrants who do not want to assert, but want to change our culture to fit their political and religious traditions. Steyn poses these questions and others and tries to suggest answers. And if the liberal left gets its way, the terrorists will win, and will invade our country through attrition and by turning our own laws against us. We turn and look the other way hoping they will become more like us - they will not. Europe is already feeling the squeeze from its immigrant Muslim population...will America be next? Books like this need to be written, understood, and discussed if we wish to preserve the American way of thinking and living. Europe has already lost. Don't let America give up personal liberty and freedom in return for political correctness. It is amazing how many smart Americans just don't get. There are no second chances; ethier we work to preserve our way of life, or we lose. It's that simple. America prides itself on being inclusive of other cultures but we should not destroy OUR culture to help others feel included. If they want to be Americans, they need to assimilate to ours culture.

If you don't think Islam is a threat to the West, then just look at what is happening to Europe. The religion of Peace is anything but. I see bumper stickers that say Coexist, like we all need to just get along. Christians are not fighting with Jews. Hindus are not fight with Buddhists. Jews are not fighting with Hindus, etc. Islam is fighting with everyone, but we need to all "coexist"? Mark Steyn is brilliant in this book. It all comes down to birthrates and the Muslims are winning. There will be no Europe in 50 years as we know it. And if you think that is just fine, then you shouldn't worried about living under Sharia (Islamic) law. If you don't what that will mean to you, you need to read this book.

The primary point Mr. Steyn makes is that people of western ideological beliefs are being outbred by those people who adhere to Islamic tenents. Demographic certainty, he insists, means that through Islamic 'soft aggression' and our own unwillingness to confront the Islamic threat, we will be overwhelmed and eventually overrun. The Gauls are at the gates!

I listen to Mark Steyn primarily through the Hugh Hewitt podcast. He seems a very reasonable person. But this book was not what I expected from him. Instead of a well reasoned, dispassionate look at the issue of Islam and the dangers it poses, what I got was a flippant, one-sided, diatribe. After page 10, you get the gist of the entire book. Islam will destroy our way of life unless we confront it now.

I liked Mark Steyn prior to reading this book, but after having read it, I began to think him an alarmist who is too quick to claim the sky is falling. He makes some very salient points in this book, but it is very redundant. I felt that if he wanted to take on such as serious topic as this, he needed to be much less bombastic and much more analytical. Steyn is undoubtedly very intelligent, but the 'Coulter-esque' way in which he dealt with this important issue, diminished my opinion of him and made me doubt his objectivity.

Oh man. This blew my hair back!!! This is another must read for the Western man!! Europe, WAKE UP before it is too late!!! Get this book today. This might be outlawed in Canada and Europe soon. Let the light of truth shine, no matter how painful it is to take!!!

All of Steyn's comments on demographics are independently confirmable: google Gemany's low birthrate. All of his arguments flow from demographics. Those who dismiss the consequences of those arguments should check out what's happening to the Danes. The most important book of the new millenium.

Not the most scholarly book on the issue and open to some debate but basic premise is valid and very thought provoking.

This is not a long book,nor is it difficult to read;but it sums up as clearly as possible, what is taking place in the worldwide struggle of Islam to defeat Western Civilization and subjuciate all "Infidels" to Islamic Rule.This is the object that all Muslims must follow or face destruction .Nothing else will satisfy the fundamental belief of their religion;as they believe it.

Much of what one will find in this book will not be new to any observer who wants to look at what has already taken place ,rather than ignore reality and wistfully hope that all this will somehow simply go away.

Steyn has done an excellent job of summing up what the results have been to date. He shows that with very little exception,America is virtullly standing alone in this struggle. Europe,simply doesn't have,nor has ever had the will to stand up to this confrontation of ideas and Islamic infiltration into all aspects of European society ,through its swiftly changing demographics,and within a decade, or two at the most;Europe will no longer be a Christian but an Islamic continent and subject to Islamic Law.The conversion is somewhere between 30 and 40 percent complete already.The progress from Christian and Capitalistic to Secularist and Socialist is well on its way to Islamic.
As Steyn so well points out ,Canada is more in line with Europe in every respect. Canada has become very Anti- American and has embraced leftist-liberal ideas and is expressed daily in anti-Bush tirades.However;Bush is just a smokescreen,that sentiment is deep rooted and will not disappear when Bush leaves office.
Steyn completes his book by summing up what things must absolutely be done if the West wants to face the fact that it in in a war for its survival.

One thing you can be sure of when you read a Mark Steyn book is that you are going to be entertained. This one is no exception. The new paperback "Soon to be Banned in Canada" edition with the additional forward is the one to grab.

The book itself simply documents the fact that demographics is the future. If people who belive that Gays should be executed, Women should be slain if they date or marry outside of their parents wishes and that no parody or even hint of suggestion that Islam might be wrong about something be voiced have 5 children and everyone else has one, then twenty years from now they will be in charge. Particularly if the people who believe these things move to western countries and are not only not assimilated but are not complelled to obey existing laws that everyone else is required to.

This is simple math and pretending that it will not happen is foolish. I won't rehash the books arguments (you can read them) or the debate in comments. (It has already been said). I will just include two quotes from the latest version that says it all:

First on page xxii he quote Dutch Day humanist Oscar van den Boogaard on the Islamization of Europe: "I am not a worrior, but who is? I have never learned how to fight for my freedom. I was only good at enjoying it."

Finally he quotes Dennis Prager on page xxvi: "Some of us worry about a resurgent Islam and its attendant complications for a decayed Western civilization; some of us worry about global warming. In twenty years' time, one of us will be proved right and the other will look like an idiot."

That really says it all. Stein bets on the first, this book is his case. I'd buy it.

In reaction to the all-too-typical political correctness of modern advocacy, Steyn quotes some basic uncontested statistics, and draws some fairly obvious conclusions. It is his style of presentation, and his relish in clever turns of phrase, that has put him into a Canadian human rights commission's kangaroo court. His opponents seem to hold to the principles of "free speech for me and thee, but not for thee." This is, sadly, unsurprising.

Steyn's sobering elucidation of Western Europe's continuing social decline leaves the reader wondering if America must once again lead the battle to liberate the free world. Unlike the first two world wars, where the victims of oppression rallied to defeat their oppressors, today's victims (Western Europe) aim to appease their pending conqueror's (Islam).
Rather than doting suppositions, Steyn uses hard statistics to demonstrate the effects of secularism on Europe's declining population. Native European couples are averaging 1.2 offspring; Euro Islamics 4.5. London alone has experienced a population explosion of over 1 million Islamics in the past 30 years.
Europeans are playing in their cafes, enjoying yearly 8 week entitlement vacations, abstaining from procreation, whilst their invited replacements -Islamics- are breeding with focused intent.
America saved Europe twice in the last century....we may be mobilizing for the 3rd campaign.

This book has been thoroughly reviewed by others before me and several have already given in-depth reviews on the content. I do not wish to be repetitive about the content. I do, however, wish to be repetitive on the five star rating. Although this written review is not remarkable, the same can't be said for the book. EVERY American NEEDS to read this book. The facts are there and for our children's (and granchildren's)sake, we should recognize the warnings they bring.

After having read his book, I felt strongly enough to go back online and give it a five star rating. Steyn's wit, humor and presentation are exceeded only by the size of his cojones! This Canuck is my new American hero.

Interesting and griping fact centered book. However, authors attempt at humor while writing of such a serious subject did not sit well with me. I am so afraid he is right, just not funny.

I read Mark Steyn's America Alone, when it came out last fall, I haven't had a good night's sleep since.

The whole time I was reading this book, I kept hearing the Gwen Stefani cover of "It's the end of the world as we know it" (but I didn't feel fine) for all those who think America is not that great, try to imagine a world without the USA. The only country in history that had the power to subjegate the world, that didn't try. You can take all the conspiracy theories for what you think they are worth, but the demographic trends oulined here are truly frightening.

Heard great review on talk radio and had to read it myself. Great book. Perhaps too many attempts at humor, but still a great read.

For anyone concerned about the threat of radical Islam and had always planned to research more about it, Mark Steyn has done us a great service. He lays out clearly the depth and breadth of the threat, and it is sobering to behold. Insightful and well-written. In fact, it's so well-written it cost him a star - there are plenty of times he is so eager to show you what a gifted writer he is that he fails to communicate. Well worth your time, though.

Steyn does his homework. If you like information on demographic trends, certain projects of what the future might be for Europe, Japan, and the U.S. then this is a great read.

It is quite sobering and may even depress you a bit based on how Europe is changing with a massive influx of muslims coming in from Moracco the Middle East and Southeast Asia. There are a few points I would disagree with Steyn on Japan. I do believe the Japanese purposely want their population to go down slowly given the size and resources of their archipeligo nation, it isn't diminishing because of mass infusion of new workers from the Islamic world. For the Japanese, it's a shrewd move on their part.

However, Europe is another issue. It's a mess. The caucasian races are not producing children and to keep their over-inflated social systems in place (something we may have contributed in the formation with the Marshall Plan)... they need new workers, blood, even if it comes from the places vastly different in values to their own. The French city riots that happened a few years ago had substantially large numbers of youth from muslim households. Certain laws in England have been changed to accommodate a more aggressive Islamic population living there. These are only a few of the changes being seen today.

Steyn gives some provocative points and a decent level of raw and refined data to show this demographic shift. The long-term ramifications are what shaped the title of the book... "America Alone." That sense that we might be alone among the nations may happen sooner than we imagine. Although there are some who would say we always have been "alone," and that America has always marched to a different drummer than the Europeans.

Overall, a good read, and definitely a source of discussion for many. I do recommend his work. Admittedly, it focuses on demographics, and I feel Steyn could have expanded this further.

I am a genuine fan of Mark Steyn. I am a former subscriber to National Review and his "Happy Warrior" column was what I read first. I picked this book up as a result of listening to a half-hour interview with him on my local radio station. I picked it up less than 4 hours after hearing him.

The information in the book is important, but the presentation is lacking. Steyn repeats himself so often that, if properly edited, this book would only have about 50 pages. Steyn writes brilliant columns. This book reads like a series of columns that overlap information, commentary and theme and was not up to the standards that I expected.

Steyn has done a lot of research, includes dozens and dozens of quotes and paraphrasing. However, he includes absolutely no endnotes, no footnotes, heck, he doesn't even include a bibliography! C'mon, Mark, I expect my tenth grade students to show their sources. You should do the same.

An interesting side note: A Canadian court is considering banning this book due to some sort of 30 year old politically correct hate crimes law (can't write items critical of ethnic groups, etc.). While I'm not fond of the way this book is written, I can't stand the idea of banning a book for PC reasons.

Mark Steyn hits a home run with this one. As evident from the 50 odd negative reviews, he's managed to piss the LEFT WING LOONS off. Who cares about those schmucks anyway. His writing is literally laugh out funny and hard hitting at the same time. Everything he points out in the book is factually accurate. One can either deny it and wear a liberal blindfold around their eyes and blame the Neocons of fear mongering or choose to see it for the danger it poses to our way of life. Sure, you can't sit down at Starbucks with radical Islamists and agree on peace treaties over a couple of Lattes, but it would be no better using the antedeluvian ideas of Steyn's like pre-emptive strikes and stricter immigration policies and enforcement. It's easy for an 'immigrant' because that's what Steyn is anyway, to explain what the U.S. should do about saving the world from theocracies. Trouble is Steyn doesn't know a damn thing about Americans. What's it to him if we send an undermanned, poorly equipped, army into Iraq and see 4,000 of them die? As an American, do you give a s___t about British troops who have died in Iraq? Not likely.

Back at the end of the Carter administration, people criticized his administration when a couple of helicopters broke down in a rescue mission for hostages at the American embassy. Well, that pales in comparison with the incompetence of our federal government. Americans as 'leaders' of the free world? How are we going to support women's Muslim groups to help reform radical muslim culture when the G.I. bill pays about half of the $25,000 a year Iraq war veterans pay for tuition to go to a college in the U.S? And god You gotta be kidding. What has the average American sacrificed in terms of lifestyle for the cause? Encourage their children to go to public colleges rather than private ones? The typical American is out to make a buck, trade up from a Honda Ato a Lexus, waste energy, goof off in school, watch garbage on TV, and WE'RE the people who are going to save civilization? Give me a break. It might have been possible at one time when we actually had literate high school and college students. Steyn claims we should go back to the good old days when Americans had a sense of pride in their country and even knew something about the history of this country. Now, the only pride is external. Yea, once upon a time, people were true patriots. But we live in a society where most people have no idea what the Constitution is and go shopping on 'President's Day' to take advantage of the sales. Just which America is Steyn talking about? Reviving those core values is about as likely as sports 'superstars' settling for a $100,000 a year cap on their salaries. It's not going to happen.

Steyn warns about the riots in Europe by disenchanted Muslim immigrants and warns it could happen here. Well, we have had our own riots: Watts, Detroit, D.C., L.A. and the list goes on. Steyn writes as though he has THE answer, and all anyone needs to do is follow his advice. Simple. Why don't we all just hold hands and sing "Give Peace a Chance". Steyn is unfortunately an outsider who can observe what needs to change in the U.S., but not being an American, he has no idea how deeply self-interest has become a staple of the American personality.

For example, private American contractors in Iraq are triple charging the government for work they don't do, re-route refrigerators and electronics back to the U.S. after the gov't pays for them, and sell them on e-bay. Steyn expects an America whose corporations have that sort of mentality to be concerned about the greater good? Sure. We're too lazy to even learn a second language, and we expect the world to respect us? What do you think any orthodox religious person would think if they saw a TV show where two girlfriends are sleeping with the same guy and so is the mother of one of the girls--which was the plot of a sitcom on TV a few days ago. Now that's a great way to serve as a model of an ethical society. Radical Islam needs a makeover, but America isn't competent to do it until we have our own make over. And since purportedly we are a democracy, people like Steyn can't make us. I'm sure that a lot of the book's readers wish he could, though.

The fascinating thing about Steyn's argument is that it basically claims the only tactics that will work are the very ones that we abhor when they are leveled against us, like pre-emptive strikes and making lots of babies. Who will be in charge of and how they will force the latter of these two strategies is a mystery to me. Are we going to have compulsory unprotected sex? The official line on that activity is don't do it because it can spread AIDS. Pre-emptive strikes is exactly the ideology of terrorism. Terrorists feel that it's reasonable to blow up, say, a ten-year-old because in 8 years he'll be in an army bent on fighting the terrorist's own interests. Now that's pre-emptive thinking if I've ever heard of any.

There was a tough leader before the 9/11 mess began. It wasn't Bush or Cheney. It was Saddaam Hussein. Did you ever see him walking around in the traditional mufti of a radical Islamist? It was vogue military khaki and navy blue suits for him. He sounds like the kind of leader Steyn just might go for. Steyn means well, but his solutions are wrong. You won't stop a world of ever-increasing Fundamentalists by facing them head on just as you wouldn't try to stop a train by riding another train into it from the opposite direction when your own train lacks a strong engine. Is Steyn going suggest having a minimum quota of children for our families to keep pace with the population growth in less affluent cultures in the mideast and elsewhere? The way to address the "radical hordes" at the gates is through a slow, steady stream of communication and education and micro-economic development once the stranglehold of fundmentalism is reduced--this is the program that M. Yunnus has been working on for 20 years in South Asia. Yunnus won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002. When do you think Steyn is going to win one? They don't offer one for stand-up comedy.

If we start now, it will take a 100 years, and that's fine. It's just the time McCain says we may need troops in Iraq, which Steyn thinks is just peachy. However, one should consider that any comparison to the American presence in Korea with that in Iraq is silly. Yes, we've been in Korea for 55 years or so, but North Korea stopped shooting after about three years, and South Korea is happy to have a trained, well-equipped army--not the ragtag Iraqi police and military. Korea (and Japan) may have had feudal cultures but at least they didn't have theocratic ones. Those are a bit harder to 'crack'. It's a sad day in America when it takes some British guy who flunked his Monty Python audition to explain to the U.S. how to save the world.

There was a tough leader before the 9/11 mess began. It wasn't Bush or Cheney. It was Saddaam Hussein. Did you ever see him walking around in the traditional mufti of a radical Islamist? It was vogue military khaki and navy blue suits for him. He sounds like the kind of leader Steyn just might go for. Steyn means well, but his solutions are wrong. You won't stop a world of ever-increasing Fundamentalists by facing them head on just as you wouldn't try to stop a train by riding another train into it from the opposite direction when your own train lacks a strong engine. Is Steyn going suggest having a minimum quota of children for our families to keep pace with the population growth in less affluent cultures in the mideast and elsewhere? The way to address the "radical hordes" at the gates is through a slow, steady stream of communication and education that can show traditional rational values in a positive way--which means trying to create a Mideast Enlightenment.

If we start now, it will take a 100 years, and that's fine. It's just the time McCain says we may need troops in Iraq, which Steyn thinks is just peachy. However, one should consider that any comparison to the American presence in Korea with that in Iraq is silly. Yes, we've been in Korea for 55 years or so, but North Korea stopped shooting after about three years, and South Korea is happy to have a trained, well-equipped army--not the ragtag Iraqi police and military. Korea (and Japan) may have had feudal cultures but at least they didn't have theocratic ones. Those are a bit harder to 'crack'. It's a sad day in America when it takes some British guy to explain to the U.S. how to save the world.

It's interesting how throwing in a little common sense about geopolitics makes people think you're smart or even insightful. Sure, you can't sit down at Starbucks with radical Islamists and agree on peace treaties over a couple of Lattes, but it would be no better using the antedeluvian ideas of Steyn's like pre-emptive strikes and stricter immigration policies and enforcement. It's easy for an 'immigrant' because that's what Steyn is anyway, to explain what the U.S. should do about saving the world from theocracies. Trouble is Steyn doesn't know a damn thing about Americans. What's it to him if we send an undermanned, poorly equipped, army into Iraq and see 4,000 of them die? As an American, do you give a s___t about British troops who have died in Iraq? Not likely. Back at the end of the Carter administration, people criticized his administration when a couple of helicopters broke down in a rescue mission for hostages at the American embassy. Well, that pales in comparison with the incompetence of our federal government. Americans as 'leaders' of the free world? You gotta be kidding. What has the average American sacrificed in terms of lifestyle for the cause? The typical American is out to make a buck, trade up from a Honda Accord to a Lexus, waste energy, goof off in school, watch garbage on TV, and WE'RE the people who are going to save civilization? Give me a break. Steyn goes on about the good old days when Americans had a sense of pride in their country. Now, the only pride is external. Yea, once upon a time, people were true patriots. But we live in a society where most people have no idea what the Constitution is and go shopping on 'President's Day' to take advantage of the sales. Just which America is Steyn talking about? That's what I kept asking myself. Steyn complains about the riots in Europe by disenchanged Muslim immigrans and warns it could happen here. Well, we have had our own riots: Watts, Detroit, D.C., L.A. and the list goes on. My main point is that Steyn makes it sound like he has an open and shut case regarding how to solve the post 9/11 world when he is living in a fantasy world. The latest news is that private American contractors in Iraq are triple charging the government for work they don't do, re-route refrigerators and electronics back to the U.S. after the gov't pays for them, and sell them on e-bay. Steyn expects the American public to think rationally? Sure. We're too lazy to even learn a second language, and we expect the world to respect us? What do you think any orthodox religious person would think if they saw a TV show where two girlfriends are sleeping with the same guy and so is the mother of one of the girls? I saw it two days ago. Now that's a great way to serve as a model of an ethical society. The interesting thing about Steyn's argument is that it basically claims the only tactics that will work are the very ones that we abhor when they are leveled against us. I saw a terrorist interviewed and questioned why he would blow up children to support his cause. He said 'That 10-year-old boy is going to be 18 in eight year, become a soldier and try to oppress me. The book made many good points. I am one of those who thinks Secular Relativism (i.e. Liberalism) will implode society if we do not eliminate them as an influence.

However, on the Muslim issue. What is not brought out is the number of Muslims converting to Christianity every year. According to some sources, over 6 million Muslims converted in 2006 (2007 is not out yet). I have a feeling that number is low and gaining in momentum.

If you truly love your country and want to keep it free from radical Islamism, then you must read America Alone by Mark Steyn. After you've read it, you must decide where you stand and what, if anything, you are going to do about the growing threat.

The conflict between the West and Islam is growing. According to Steyn, the power and the demographics are in the Islamists' favor. They will take over Europe (that has almost been accomplished) through will and through population growth. While Europe and Canada's birth rate is falling to a point where the population cannot replace itself, the Muslim population is growing at three and four times the replacement need. In a generation or two, immigrants from Islamic countries will take over by majority. Lest you think the United States is safe, it is not. The power of Islam is growing here also and we're hanging on by a thread with our birth rate.

According to author Styn, the population that will become the majority is largely unassimilated, angry and more aligned with the culture, traditions and the laws of Islam. Look out for sharia law and burkas will be the new little black dress. Books will be burned, television programs banned and no one will be safe from the consequences of defying `their' laws.

But hey, the fact that this is happening is our fault really. Styn says we've allowed it. Countries are opening their doors to large numbers of people who are not assimilating, want to destroy our culture and possess the will to conquer while we want to believe they just want a good life.

Read America Alone and either accept Steyn's theory or reject it. But he has `sounded the alarm' so don't blame him if you're waking to the call to prayer in the U.S. in twenty years. The ultimate question is: Do we have the stomach to prevail against a radical people who want to destroy the west? Steyn thinks there is a way to win.

Armchair Interviews says: An intriguing read.

Mark Steyn is an excellent writer and this book is no exception. I received this book as a gift while I was deployed with the military the first time around to Iraq....Mark makes some excellent points about the future of the world and how current events are having a large impact on how the world views us and will view us in the future. Be very aware of the world around you....start with this book and it will lead you in the right direction. Mark is a brilliant writer with a very easy to read style. I recommend that you pick up all of his books....as this is just a taste of what an excellent writer he is. And I agree with Mark, Europe has sat back and allowed their country to be overtaken by religious zealots and didn't fight back all in the name of "expression of freedoms", the Dutch have learned a difficult lesson from this, the British are learning their lesson and the Norwegians just don't want to admit their troubles. The trouble isn't with Islam however...the trouble is with RADICAL, MILITANT Islam...there is a difference and we must stand up and face that today...or we will see ourselves in the same boat at the European nations are today. The riots may be in France today but they could be in California or Michigan just as easily tomorrow. Although this is a serious issue and Mark writes with this in mind...he can be a quite humorous read at the same time. Kudos to Mark Steyn for yet another fantastic product!

Some signs that we are actually headed for a "post-western post-civilization": In 2007, the city of Brussels had a mayor whose Party caucus of 18 members had 10 who are Islamists. Soon, according to a liberal newspaper, the majority of the Russian Army will be Islamists. Gay-bashing is on the rise in the most "tolerant" cities in Europe. (Amsterdam appointed a commission to try to figure out why that was!) Canada's Islamic population has doubled in the last 10 years. Thousands of polygamous men in Britain and Canada receive welfare payments for each of their wives. British Islamic nurses in public hospitals refuse to wash their hands because they would have to bare their arms, which is unIslamic. The rise in the number of "honor killings." "Reverse assimilation": the host communities are having to assimilate to the immigrants, not vice versa. In Oxford, the Islamists announced plans to broadcast the call to pray three times a day over the most serene of English towns.

Books these days are defeated with single words. The favorite word, of course, is "racist". Steyn counters by pointing out that in the Balkans, the Islamists are of exactly the same race as the non-Islamists. Race is not the problem, and charges of racism are a diversionary tactic. Moreover, in 2007, some wannabe suicide bombers were arrested. They were ethnic German converts, not Arabs. "Islam is an ideology", not a race. (p. xxi)

Another single word used to defeat this book is the word "alarmist." Steyn counters with, If the information in this book is not enough to alarm you, what would it take?! The book is not about "them;" it's about "us". The most terrifying fact is the indifference of the European (and American) people to what is happening. "More to the point, who are you relying on to `hold the line'? ... The Western world is not run by fellows noted for their line-holding." (p. xv) In 2007, the Nordic Battlegroup's coat of arms, which showed a lion, was changed to remove the penis from the lion. Steyn calls this "The Gelded Age".

Finally, there is the current effort by Islamists to get this book banned in Canada. "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. Which is why so many radical Muslim lobby groups are eager to criminalize vigilance." (p. xxv)

After I got into the book, I was hoping and waiting the whole time for the author to give solutions to this situation. I was really glad when his proposed solutions were finally listed, but I wish that Steyn would have elaborated on them more. I also would have liked to see more information on Islam itself and sharia law.

Nevertheless, this is an excellent book, and I believe that every literate person in the free world should read it. We have really got to open our eyes to what is going on, and we have to do something about it. If we don't, we and our way of life itself could disappear to the sounds of "Allahu Akbar".

Well written. Funny, factual, and scary as hell when you realise that it is we who are the authors of our own destruction, not Islamic fundamentalists. This is a must read from a great writer.

Once one gets past the red-necking chest-thumping verbosity,there is a great deal to read and learn.On checking out some of the statements:I found most of them true, though some were not fully followed through.Mr.Steyn's bias -and am not talking about Muslim -but the re-occurring bias- in general, against people,countries, ideas,and causes plus his excessive and explosive use of words distracting.On the whole,very good book.

It is up to America to save the world from the dark doom of Islam, that much is obvious. The complete failure of much of Western Europe, especially under the EU, is obvious. Stock up on ammo, its going to be a hell of a fight.

Mark Steyn takes a look at the grim realities Western civilization surely will face if we as a whole don't wake up and take action. Steyn, using his sharp wit, describes for example, the tremendous rate of growth in the Muslim population using actual statistics. With the average Muslim woman giving birth in the UK at a rate of 3X or more than a non-Muslim woman it's no wonder the most popular boys name in many countries in the UK is Mohammed and over the next 50 years the stronger identity will obviously prevail. This is a fact most people haven't even considered.

Steyn also describes how to the western worlds detriment, the extreme liberal "multicultural" attitudes of our lazy soceity has allowed Muslims (and their deep rooted hatred of unbelievers) to push their way in demanding and receiving special rights often at the expense of others long standing rights. It was not Mark Steyn, but Algerian leader Houari Boumédienne who said at the United Nations in 1974: "One day, millions of men will leave the Southern Hemisphere to go to the Northern Hemisphere. And they will not go there as friends. Because they will go there to conquer it. And they will conquer it with their sons. The wombs of our women will give us victory."
Steyn doesn't go as near in depth about the history of Islam as I would have liked (for that I recommend Robert Spencer) but does touch on the the basic facts that the one goal of Islam/Muslims is to conquer all other religions and ways of life. Looking at the history of Islam and how it has conquered and converted countries from its onset to present day (think Chad,Sudan,Somalia and others)should be all any realistic, open minded person would need to see the obvious.

Steyn doesn't lend any credence to all the apologists and their assertions that Islam is actually peaceful and any violence committed in the name of Islam is done by extremists who have taken it out of context. Once again, any person with the ability to reason and the opportunity to learn (from fair and objective sources) can see for himself that regardless of the statements expressed by so called "moderate" Muslims, no action is ever taken by Muslims to actively go after and punish those who commit them.
Do not be fooled by the leftist media, liberal politicians or Muslim clerics who speak out of both sides of their mouth in our countries. The Quran MANDATES violence against unbelievers. The peaceful verses that the apologists wave in your face have been abrogated (replaced by the newer-per Mohammeds command)and the violent ones have taken their place. The Quran is to be taken literally and any attempt to modify or reform or reinterpret is considered highly blasphemous. Anyone who tries to tell you differently is either sadly uninformed or lying.

The reader needs to come away from this book with a desire to learn more and an urge to educate others about the dangers facing our civilized world. Don't look to our great leaders to help. The need to be "politically correct" and sensitive to other cultures has resulted in intimidating western leaders and media to cower, grovel, deny, apologize and ultimately submit to the belief that Islam is a peaceful religion.

Mark Steyn's message is that the world is changing and America is the only nation in a position to resist the demographic and ideological challenge that Islam presents. By examining the current birth rates for the western world (or developed countries) with that of the Islam world, the author presents a cogent argument for the idea that unless something changes in the near future, Europe is going to be an Islamic continent and other continents will follow in the same path.

Next, he considers the idea of whether or not Islam is an extremist, violent religion or a peaceful religion. Looking at the Koran as well as the words of various Muslim leaders, the message is clear that conversion to Islam via the sword or car bomb is in harmony with Muhammed's teachings. The Koran also teaches that conversion from Islam is a crime punishable by death. Therefore, the idea that Islam can co-exist peacefully with other religions is shown to be false, both in theory and practice.

Then, Steyn shows the futility of interacting with Islam on the basis of political correctness. Woven throughout the book is the challenge to "wake up" to the changes that radical Islam (which he argues is true Islam) presents.

My main complaint is that the author chooses to be unnecessarily crude in his language and expressions. Sometimes, this is done for purposes of humor, but other times it seems to be totally out of place. Overall, I think Steyn presents his argument in a forceful and engaging style.

After a couple pages of reading, I grabbed a highlighter and marked large chunks of each page, then passed the book on to my son. It's so important to understand the demographics involved in the current world situation and Mark Steyn makes it so enjoyable a read.

By the time I was half way through the book, I was getting tired of it. The information is insightful and thought-provoking but very repetative. I felt like the book should have been a short story length but someone decided to make it novel length instead.
While it is possible to verify most of the information the author cites in the book, it would have been nice if he had included some of his source material for further research.
Overall very good information but not the best writing style for me.

It is an interesting read and Mark Steyn is a very good writer.

I enjoy his newspaper columns and pretty much agreed with everything he wrote until he went down this Neo Conservative path to support the foolish second war against Iraq, then when virtually the entire world opposed the US - go it alone war against the people in Iraq, Steyn falls into this defensive line of reasoning that the entire world is wrong, especially weak, dying Old Western Europe and America, implied led by the wise Neo Conservatives are right and must face the evils of the world alone.

Yes, Mark Steyn is on target when he shows idiot PC multi culturalist in the West as... idiot, PC multi culturalists who really don't know much about the real world, haven't studied true history, know nothing about Islam, the brutalities of the Third World and fall into reflex PC responses that "THE WEST" and AMERICA are to blame for all the problems in the world and if certain Muslims groups, Muslim nations do horrible brutalities, no one in the West can blame them, we must blame ourselves.

Mark Steyn is of course right when he warns the West, especially Western Europeans that they have to resist mass Muslim immigration and giving in to the demands of Muslims within their borders. There are no making deals with Islam when it senses weakness and looks to take over schools, neighborhoods, countries, continents.

The main problem with Mark Steyn's America Alone, is a problem that I see with most Jewish Neo Conservatives:

They put out the lie that they - and only they alone are fighting the terrorists, opposing the Islamic extremists and they use brutal smears to attack anyone that doesn't accept their whole program including the foolish Iraq war - Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 - it wasn't an Islamic extremist state. There were no WOMD.

Steyn and most Jewish Neo Conservatives simply ignore all the populist, nationalist and true Conservatives in Europe, the West who have been resisting the Muslim invasions, Islamic extremism in their countries for a long time - the Front National in France, Swiss People's Party, the British National Party, Pym Fortuyn, Pat Buchanan, the Rockford Institute, these patriots get no mention or support from Mark Steyn and the Neo Conservatives because they do not support Israel unconditionally - worse, these patriots are smeared as NAZIs.

But, this is just one point.

America Alone is a well written book and Steyn does a very good job of showing the stupidity of those in the West who aid and abet the Islamic invasion and terror against Westerners in the West.

Many Americans do not understand the strengths and positive aspects of our culture and economic system. Because of this, these strengths can easily be undermined by enemies who understand us better than we do ourselves. Steyn's book is a literate, funny antidote to all this -- it can change your point of view and get you thinking along paths you haven't before. And to all those who mindlessly repeat a bunch of you-know-what about Islam being a religion of peace, google naskh, the Islamic doctrine of abrogation, by which an imam can simply negate earlier Koranic verses (the peaceful ones) and substitute later (more violent) ones for them. Also check out taqiyya, the Islamic doctrine of lying to one's enemies. Since the radical Islamists view all Westerners as their enemies, it's Ok by them (and they have religious justification) to lie, present themselves as something they're not, drink, consort with prostitutes, etc., all to make us believe they're harmless. Read this book -- several times!

Read it, and be prepared to discuss it for weeks with any friends who are capable of serious consideration of critical issues. Extraordinarily well-written and meaningful. Maybe the overall best read in several years.

Few people have any idea of how Islam has changed the face of Europe and the rest of the "old world". Mark Steyn has done an excellent job of researching the threat we face, both as Americans and as Westerners. Muslims are out-birthing us greatly, and are gaining a stronger hold on Europe everyday. Their gain is slowly building here as well. If we are not careful, and don't put a stop to the Islamic invasion, we will be overrun as well.

This may be the most important book in the history of the universe.

During WW-II, the US had to dig deep into their pocket to find the balls to save the world from Hitler. They were handed their balls in the form of Pearl Harbor. A bit late, but they pulled it off and saved the world.

On 9/11, the US got another call for balls. Somehow, though, in these intervening years of prosperity, finding those balls is not a problem for the military, but the people are still hesitant, despite 9/11 and a host of other wake up calls. Apparently in the intervening years it has become difficult for Americans to find the courage to say "Islam is the problem."

Because the only paradigm that works is the US paradigm. All of the other nations, such as Holland, France, Somalia, Russia etc are doomed to the Dark Ages unless the US exports this paradigm. And sure enough, the US is doing just that in Iraq and Afghanistan, and will soon give Iran and Pakistan an overhaul. Then I guess Syria and Egypt. Or maybe Lebanon.

Too imperialistic for you? Not at all. Ending the tyranny of terror and human rights abuse and replacing it with freedom, democracy, prosperity and dignity are merely gifts.

But more than gifts... that is how civilization can survive against a brutal force attempting to destroy and enslave it.
