The book touches on some of the general broad tools of Photoshop CS3. The problem is that Photoshop CS3 is a very involved and somewhat complex software application. It takes more practice than this book can cover.

I am completely new to a photo editing program like Photoshop CS3 Using the book "Classroom in a Book" has made the learning process so much simpler. Lesson material used is present so that you can see exactly what is being presented in the lesson by comparing what you have done with the pictures presented with the text. You are provided with an overview of what you are expected to learn at the start of the lesson. Then you are taken step by step through the procedure. The text is written in a way that is easy to understand and not written as if you were an experienced photographer. Having been a classroom instructor I appreciate the manner in which the material is prsented. I have not felt overwhelmed by the material.

Sorry I couldn't give any review about this Photoshop CS3 book. I was very disappointed. I didn't receive the book from the seller, bayaraa111, he took the money and quietly disappeared. He never responded to my emails. The only review I could give is stay away from this seller, check his reviews if you wanted, 100% negative from about more than a dozen of other unlucky buyers like me. I wish Amazon has a certified seller program to maintain its reputations and don't let the sellers like bayaraa111 ruins them. I think the book is very helpfull for what we want to know and learn. I will give my thought about this book when I buy it from other sellers and Amazon resolves this matter for me. STATY AWAY FROM BAYARAA111 !!! STAY AWAY FROM BAYARAA111 !!! STAY AWAY FROM BAYARAA111 !!!

The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book is the perfect learning tool for any first time user of Photoshop. I had never used photoshop before so I bought this book to learn how and it makes it really easy to learn. Lessons are included in which it takes you through a step by step learning experience so when done you know how to use the tools learned in the particular lesson. I would definetly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to use photoshop!

Step by Step book. You must have Adobe CS3 for better results. If you're using an older version software it might not help that much; there are different new features with CS3. So you can't follow it "step by step" with and older version of photoshop. The book itself is great. I'm always prefer the the books from the software manufacter.

usually i have a really hard time reading books on computer programs, but this book is written very well. I am actually able to read this book, and follow along on photoshop. It goes over the basics, but without seeming to spend entire chapters on how to open or save a file. It moves quickly, but not too quickly. This is definetly the best book, on a computer program, that i've ever read.

I recently attended a two-day course on Adobe Photoshop CS3 as part of my conversion to digital photography and digital imaging. At the end of that course the students were all given a copy of this book which contains a training CD Rom. As I was already booked onto the "advanced course" in 14 days time, I eagerly put the CD into my computer to practise what I had learned. Only then did I discover the CD would not work without my having first purchased and installed the full Adobe Photoshop CS3 software.

In my case, I had already ordered that software so it was only a matter of a few days delay before I could get started. Just be warned that you cannot use this product without having first installed the full software package - and that is a separate purchase altogether.

Once that's done, it's actually great. Anyone who starts at page one - with no previous experience and no knowledge of the difference between a tool bar and a menu bar, will find it all fit slowly into place as the book teaches one step at a time and then builds on each step until you find yourself automatically going back to something already learned as though you have been doing it for years.

My only criticism of the book is some pretty silly typing errors. In one example you are referred back to a previous page only to find they got the page number wrong. In another, a list of tools is incorrect.

I did find such basic errors to be quite surprising (and very annoying at the time) from a team of people who are otherwise so technically competent.

I have this book and just finished chapter 7. The book is adequate at getting you acquainted with the program but does not delve very deep into the "why" of things. It's easy to work your way through the images on the CD and everything comes out hunky-dory but they don't do a very good job of explaining the processes and why you're selecting this item or that. So, when it comes time to work on your own images and attempt similar processes, it is of no use.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book

This book was for a Photoshop Class and I stopped using it after I found step-by-step instructional errors in Chapters 6 and 10. The instructor was happy was previous editions and didn't realize the problems with this one. I wasted valuable time and effort trying to follow instructions that were inaccurate.

I ended up using Adobe Photoshop CS3 Professional Portfolio by Against the Clock publishers which had accurate step by step instructions as well as entire pages that gave more detailed information about the various functions of Photoshop (resampling, channels, distinguishing blending modes, layer styles in depth, curves, etc. etc.) It goes into depth on every photoshop tool and gave more info than most books I've seen since. *Adobe Photoshop CS3 Professional Portfolio* is one that a person could learn from as well as keep as an invaluable reference guide.

I reference this book as a suggested learning tool in another review, but it is not the kind of a book I like to use. The "Classroom in a Book" volumes are exactly that - lessons done a step at a time. If you are one of those people who don't move at the pace of the slowest student, you may get frustrated with this technique.

I find this book to be chatty and rather unhelpful as a reference. One's only choice as a user is to do the exercises one at a time in order. There are some benefits to that, but if you already know what you want to do, getting there is slow. That said, Photoshop is a huge piece of software and you have to start somewhere. At least this course gets the basics out of the way. As a first look at Photoshop, it is OK.

If you really want to understand Photoshop(after getting an understanding of the basics) look at Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC, which gives seven hundred pages of specific how-to advice for photographers who are already in possession of the basic concepts. Don't go there as a first step, though, because you will be lost unless you take a course like this one first.

The real problem after all is that Photoshop is just hard to learn because there are so many concepts and individual, often similar, tools. Also, there are competing approaches that are slightly different, but one is clearly better than the other in some situations. It takes some time to figure all that out, and no book is really going to get you there. You just have to get some experience.

I find it to be chatty, randomly organized and not helpful at all as a reference. Your only choice as a user is to do the exercises one at a time in order and hope that you get to the end before you freak out. In my case, it did not happen that way.

(Hide Review...)  It DOES teach important fundamentals.......
Reviewer Permalink
Photoshop Classroom in a Book (CiaB) does teach important fundamentals. But I've discovered that working through the book on my own just didn't work well.

For example, I needed to move something in one of the lessons, but the move tool simply did not work. Working on my own, it would have been frustrating and "off-putting." But I am using Classroom in a Book as the textbook for a video imaging class at a local college, so when I can't do the things I wanted to do in the book lesson, I am able to ask the professor.

Being able to get expert help when you run into a problem with a CiaB lesson makes all the difference in the world. I've never been able to get through the Illustrator CiaB by working through the book all on my own. Because I've had such a good experience using Photoshop CS3 CiaB as part of a class, I'm going to take another college class that uses Illustrator CS3 CiaB as the textbook.

In summary Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book will teach you valuable Pshop skills. But you'll learn them more efficiently if you have expert help close at hand when you trip over something in a lesson.

I purchased PS CS3 this summer, and have been slowly working through CLASSROOM IN A BOOK (CIB). A lot of the material is new to me. Photoshop is a beast of a program; it's incredibly powerful and useful. The downside of such complexity is that you must know what you're doing in order to get things to work. I was hoping that CIB would give me a solid understanding of how to use PS. While I did learn quite a bit, I still had a lot of basic questions about PS when I finished the book.

CIB is written textbook style. It has chapters on basics topics like layering, retouching, making selections, using type. Each chapter works you through one or two examples provided on the CD that comes in a sleeve under the back cover. At the end of each chapter are review questions and answers.

The writing is excellent and the examples thoroughly cover what the chapter aims to teach you. The problem is that it's not nearly enough. Some terms are defined in the text but a lot of other information is left out. There is no glossary or other type of reference chapter. Sometimes the authors explain the purpose behind the techniques, sometimes they do not. I found I had to work through chapters twice to understand what I was doing. Nothing is offered beyond the basics.

While CIB does give you a good run through of CS3, I would only recommend it if you have some basic knowledge of photoshop. I found myself seeking out other books to help me get a better grasp.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book is a beneficial book for both newcomers to the Photoshop world as well as seasoned Photoshop users. The book is divided into individual lessons -- beginning with a basic introduction to the Photoshop work area including the menu bar, tool bar and palettes, and concluding with a discussion of printing and color space. An enclosed CD contains all the image files needed to follow along with each lessons. Every lesson folder contains a completed image indicating your goal, a starting image to work from, as well as any complimentary images needed.

I am a self-taught Photoshop user, and I hoped this book would teach me more technically efficient ways to use filters, layers, and masked. I was pleased with the methods recommended by the authors, as well as happy to learn many new image editing tools. Each lesson thoroughly covers the intended subject area.

I particularly liked the organization of this book. All lessons (chapters) in the book are taught using the same format, so you get into a routine as you peruse through the book. Every chapter begins with an estimated time to complete the lesson, and I thought the time estimate was realistic.

There is a lot of subject matter included in this 478 page book, so plan to take your time if you want to cover every lesson. This book works better as a teaching tool, than a desktop reference manual.

I highly recommend this book to Photoshop beginners because of the thorough step-by-step approach to learning the material, as well as intermediate Photoshop users who will learn many new techniques. Both PC and MAC commands are clearly stated.

The book comes with a CD of images for the lessons and video examples. Even though I have used PS for years, I rolled up my sleeves and did every lesson in order -- except the last two, which pertain to video and commercial printing which don't interest me. Even with my experience I was constantly saying, ,"I didn't know you could do that!" The book is clearly written and beautifully illustrated. An excellent introductory Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Bookonce-over to help you get a grip on the power of PS and to point the way to further experimentation.

The subtitle is "Includes training with Photoshop CS3 & CS3 Extended and 16 tutorial movie tutorials."

There is no information, that I could find, on the video editing features of CS3 Extended, either in the book or in the videos. The addition "Lightbox" is not listed in the Table of Contents nor the index, but appears on page 241. Perhaps this is a bit of revenge for Adobe against people who pirate the software and try to buy a book to use it. It certainly is not like the old Photoshop manuals which were informative and something to be proud of.
