I have read all the Dark Hunter series and loved them all. I saw the size of this one and thought "whoa tmi" but I absolutely could not put it down and devoured it in a weekend. Loved it! I hope there is more in the works in this line, and I am really glad to see Acheron get himself a sweetie finally.

This is Kenyon's best ever, and I've read them all. I referred to this book as "the Precious" I could not put it down and did not want it to end! I am planning to read it again since this is the kind of complex, multi-layered story that almost needs to be reread to be truly appreciated.

(Hide Review...)  Ash is the BEST!!!!
Reviewer Permalink
Ok this is one of my favorite books EVER..I have loved this series for years and I am glad Ash finally got his own book! SK has hinted for years and given us clues about Ash but no one knew exactly what he was and I ate up ever page of this big book. But theh reason SK did not get a 5 star is these 3 reasons:
1. I would have loved to see more of Kat, Ash's daughter. This was a perfect time for Ash and Kat to grow in their relationship and SK did not allow it. Plus in the book Ash is always saying no one loves him, but Simi and his mom. Hello, what about Kay, she has always loved him from afar cause of Artie1
2. Not enough of Simi. Simi is my favorite character and she could have been in every scene and that would have made me happy!!!
3. I wish Tory would have kicked Artie's butt all over Olympus. Yeah they had one scene but I wish Tory would have given her a taste of her own medicine.
This is a great series and I am looking forward to Styker's book and any other book she decides to write. Keep them coming sherrilyn!!!

Without a doubt,Ms. Kenyon can write her butt off. True, it is a very difficult read, but ASH is not your typical Dark-Hunter. He's their leader, confidant, and all-around fixer. If you're faint of heart, this may not be the book for you, but if you can get through the first half, then you're well on your way to nirvana! With all the abuse, rejection you finally understand his stand-offish, guarded attitude/manner. But through it all, he maintains his humanity, and compassion towards everyone, but not himself. I'm gonna have to read it again, JUST BECAUSE I CAN!!!! Well done, Ms. Kenyon, well done.

(Hide Review...)  Acheron Was Fantastic. The Second Half Not So Fantastic
Reviewer Permalink
First let me say that to date I have enjoyed all of the books in the Dark-Hunter, Were-Hunter Series. I have even enjoyed the Dream-Hunter books.
I found the first part of Acheron heart wrenchingly riveting, you would have a good idea of where a particular scene was going and really did not want to read it and yet you felt compelled to continue. So many things were answered and many questions were raised, it was well written, well thought out and worth every penny, I spent on it.
Then we came to the present day, what I term the second part. I read somewhere that Kenyon had had to re-write the draft for Dream Hunter, since in the first one she had blown up Ash's Heroine, when she blew up "The Simi" She really should have left her at the bottom of the sea. I admit I was never a Tori fan, I do not think Kenyon was either. Where the first half was smooth and flowing, the second half is rough and choppy.
In Dream-Hunter, We have a girl who at the age of 15 was considered a certified genius, she is reputed not to do much of anything besides read Plato
We fast-forward ahead 10 years Little Mouse Tori is still a mouse but wait she is also an adrenaline junky. In ten years she has managed to land her Doctorate and gotten a job as a professor at Tulane, she has taken the Porsche Driving course, and learned to Fence, has experience on Motorcycles, and a multitude of other things. She has also been plundering the Aegean for Atlantis. I am sorry but most of these things are very expensive, many she would have had to be eighteen, they also take time to learn. The pieces just do not fit together.
I hope Stryker is back on track.

This book explained all the things you were wondering about Acheron and what made him the god he is today. I think SK wrote about his abuse in more of an implied way than just out right stating it and it made you feel for him all the more. I hope Acheron and Simi are in the next books because I enjoy reading about them.

acheron was a great read. I think the details in the begining of human acheron lets us understand the dark-hunter acheron. maybe was intending to the author also shows us that adversity in childhood does not necassary led to a truly bad person. it also showed how a young acheron looking for affection was used by artemis. i enjoyed this book immersely and look forward to more of the dark-hunter series. it was great reading about old favorites. hope to see more of them.

To finally read about how Artermis get her just dues and not from Ash but someone who loves him, makes it all worth while for every humilation, abuse, pain and degradation he suffered.

I'm not going to give a review of the story itself, many have done a great job of it, but will give my feelings on it.
I so much wanted Ash to have his HEA that it was simply torture to read the first part and suffer right along with him. When the second part started I had to take a few moments to compose myself from that rollercoaster of raw emotion from Ash's suffering.
Ash is a sweetheart and truly wonderful hero. All he wanted was to be accepted and loved for himself. The second part is more reminscent of her DH novels but with a slight difference in that Ash is not a true Dark Hunter but human/god.
The heroine, Tory, is just what Ash needed, someone who loved him totally, regardless of his differences and his past.
I really liked Appollymi. From previous bks she comes across as evil but here you find out what she's truly like and the immense love she has for her son, and the lengths she would go to protect him.
Loved the fact that Tory is just like Apollymi in the sense that she would do anything to protect Ash. But unlike him, she would kill to save him, even if it means destorying everything, including mankind.

This is a 5* read my only complaint is that the second part should have been a a bit longer. Despite this, it does wrap up nicely and it's wonderful to see the Dark Hunters from previous novels all band together to help Ash rescue Tory. Even Styxx, whom I absolutely hated in the first, redeems himself in the second part.

I like all Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter books but this one I simply loved. It finishes off the Dark Hunter's series nicely, according to the author this arc is over and she now moves to another arc starting with Stryker. And I'm looking forwards to the new direction the series take and to Nick's book. Nick is not truly a DH, but 'other' since Stryker owns a bit of him now, and as this bk ends it seems Nick is falling into the clutches of the heifer-goddess. (though I seriously hope not)
I like the character of Savitar, hope he gets a bk too. And then there's Jaden, really, really like him, hope there's a book on him. Seems like he is as tortured as Ash was.
An Excellent read.

Well done SK!

I am a big fan of Ms. Kenyon's writing and her incredible imagination. This book has been long awaited (on my part); I don't normally buy the hard-cover books, but I could not wait for the paperback.

This was an incredible read! The beginning is brutal and vividly detailed; giving us the background that Acheron has so carefully guarded. He is an incredible character with alarming control and compassion when compared to the viciousness of his life.

The love story is well developed and believable. Tory is just the kind of woman that Ash needs in his life; and she is his equal in strength and determination, as well as compassion and understanding. The relationship is a bit rocky at first, as Ash is determined to keep his past a secret and Tory wishes to expose everything to the world (unknowingly, of course).

The book is long, but I read it in a matter of hours; I could not put it down!! I highly recommend this book for those who are fans of this series and even those who are new to this genre.

Happy (DARK) hunting!!

I can't imagine any Dark Hunter lover not liking this book. Finally, the long-awaited story of Acheron.

Kenyon selected the perfect heroine as a foil to Ash. Someone who won't let him take himself too seriously, but who also has the education to understand him.

The first half of the book detailing Ash's human life is tough. It's hard to see a person go through so much despair over and over again. However, it does explain so much about Ash and his actions.

The second part of the book is his love story. At times it feels a little rushed (come on, the book is over 700 pages, so some things have to move quickly), but not unreasonably so. Ash and Tori find the best in each other and bring that to the forefront. It's also fun to see the other Dark Hunters come back into this story. Talon lovers will find that he has quite a few appearances. Kenyon hasn't forgotten to include the humor that her writing is so famous for. I read it 3 times in the month since it's release. I can't wait for more!

Let's start like this: I love all the Dark Hunter novels. All of them. Mindless of teasing, repetition, character similarities, commonality in theme. And I love, love, love the character Acheron.

All this in spite of the following: Kenyon isn't a terrific author. She's OK. JUST OK. For the subject matter, her prose leaves much to be desired. However, her ability to suck a reader into a story makes up for whatever her language doesn't provide, and I love her knack for characterization. I've wanted to read Acheron's story for several years now, ever since I discovered Dark Hunters, and I wasn't too terribly disappointed. The book on a whole was really good...storytelling wise. I suppose I wish there had been more fanfare since this was the book with which she's teased readers/fans for years. In the very end, it felt like another Dark Hunter novel. It began with great promise but fizzled out...not to say it didn't keep my interest. It did. And I will likely read it again (as well as the other DH novels because I love Acheron the character), but for a character like that to have such a formuliac novel.

People on here are saying the beginning was too brutal. It was brutal, but nothing I found offensive. The only thing that stuck out to me (and please bear in mind, I'm reviewing this as a fan AND a woman with a Bachelors in Creative Writing), was Kenyon's desire to make things as horrible for Acheron as possible. In a really well-crafted/written story, that wouldn't come across as starkly as it did here. I was well aware that no matter how bad things grew for him, they could and would get worse. It was just a matter of when.

That being said, I love how she developed the Acheron/Artemis relationship. Very realistic (or as realistic as it could be, given the subject matter). It likewise provided great insight into how their relationship had developed into what we see in the other Dark Hunter novels.

No, my problem with the novel was the last half. Not to say I don't like a torrid romance as much as any other red-blooded female, but having read all the other Dark Hunter novels, it struck me as too much "to plan" for a character such as Acheron. Boy meets girl, etc. It's been a while since I reread any Dark Hunter novel, but I know Tory's character falls in line with Kenyon's other heroines. Smart, sassy, not-easily-seduced, and in the end, willing to do anything for her man. That's fine. That's what I expect when I read a Dark Hunter novel. But being that, as a fan, I waited so long for Acheron's story in particular...it left me wanting. I was expecting something less "Dark Hunter-y" for him in the end.

Don't walk away thinking this isn't a good book. It is. I loved it, even with my problems with the way it was told. It made me want to read the other novels again, and that hasn't happened in a long time with any of Kenyon's work. "Acheron" had me thoroughly enraptured for three days. I couldn't put it down, and when I did, much pouting ensued. For fans, it's good, if not the best it could have been.

It's true that the first half of the book is agonizing. I cried as I read it. Knowing the man that he will become in the future, his capacity for compassion, patience and even love, the tale of his beginning was horrifying and tragic. It's amazing that he became what he is instead of a serial killer or the destroyer that he was prophesied to be.

I think he must have a greater heart then any human can because I certainly couldn't forgive or turn the other cheek towards any of his tormentors. Actually I think too many of them got off too easily. In my personal opinion, much of them needed to suffer for their actions. I just wanted Acheron to be free to live and love the way he deserves.

I won't recount further what happens in the book. Only that it was heartfelt, powerful and that only the knowledge of the future kept the present from overwhelming the reader with grief. The moments of sweetness and love were wonderful and much needed.

I loved the book and it has in my eyes, moved Acheron light years away from the typical romance hero to simply, a hero.

Bravo Sherrilyn!

I have to state up front that I've never thought Kenyon was that good of a writer. She's an awesome storyteller, but her writing is way too much of the tell instead of the show variety and this book is one of the worst offenders of that I've ever read.

I've long awaited this book. Acheron has been my favorite character in the Dark Hunter series for a very long time, but I was hugely disappointed by his story. Now, I don't take child abuse lightly, but please tell me how an 11,000 year old GOD can't overcome his abuse and "shame" until some silly woman throws a hammer at his head? Shouldn't SOME measure of wisdom come with all those years? not ONCE in all those years did he meet a decent person who would treat him with honor and respect and make him realize that no intelligent, caring person would hold what horrid people did to him 11,000 years ago against HIM? Really? So is the author trying to tell us that a person can't overcome abuse even in thousands of years until they meet that ONE person who'll be nice to them? I find the very idea of that horrifying.

Don't even get me started on what a disappointment Tory was in his story. She's talking about something most people consider to be mythology and she throws a hammer at someone who DARED to mock her? This is not a heroine as far as I'm concerned. And I'm supposed to realize she really loves him because she doesn't reveal his "shame" at the end? How about the author have the poor pathetic Acheron realize, with the help of the love of his life, that he has nothing to be ashamed of? HE did nothing wrong. But no, we have to continue until the bitter end to make him a hopeless, scared victim.

I realize the things that were done to him are some of the things it's hardest for a person to overcome. I just think he should have, you know, overcome them. He didn't. I think that's a disservice to the many victims of child abuse who have managed to go on to lead healthy, happy lives. It's not easy, but it can be done. In less than 11,000 years.

Thumbs way up for Acheron's history and his chance at happiness. Finally we learn the extent of heartlessness and cruelty that was committed on him from the humans he thought were parents and a Goddess who said she loved him. He still was able to recognize that there is good in humans and they should be defended. I am glad that he does finally get a chance of happiness for himself. Now, we wait for Nick and his new friend to see what they will plot. Way to go Ash.

Don't let the length of this book intimidate you. Ms. Kenyon explains from the beginning that she felt she had to explore Ash's background in order to fully help the reader understand his intriguing personality. In the opening chapters, this material is difficult to read. At times, you may feel that his torturous childhood is too much to bear--a feat in and of itself for an author. Kudos to her for actually making my heart break a little for a fictional character! But the novel picks up brilliantly when Acheron finally meets his match and the romantic fireworks begin. Acheron, the god, does not want or need mortal love. Ash, the man, however, craves it with a passion he never was able to feel as a human. Fans of Ms. Kenyon's Dark Hunter series will escape into this novel and will both weep and cheer for Ash.

This is actually 2 novels in one, though presented as 3 parts. Parts 1 & 2 comprise the history of Acheron, part 3 is a typical *meh* dark-hunter romance novel.

I'd still recommend buying this for loyal DH fans; Acheron's story is dark and compelling, and very well-written. With an unflinching realistic look at what life as a sex-slave means for the abandoned child of gods (yes, I swaer that statement makes sense), Acheron's journey of pain is told from his human step-sister's viewpoint, and then later his own.

The imaginings of Atlantis are a bit vague for my tastes, but the images of ancient Greece are poignant. Artemis comes across as truly Daeus Es Machina, a childish, impudent goddess playing with fate.

Acheron's pain is so stark and real that my only complaint is that it doesn't mesh with the sarcastic and seemingly carefree Ach we're used to in the first few DH books, but as this was planned out after those were written, it's negligible.

Part 3 is where we meet Acheron's lady. The hinting clues before that we saw her in previous books left me a bit puzzled. I would have to go back and read the book she appears in because I don't remember her at all.

She's spunky and feisty, entirely likeable, but as a romance...it fizzles. The breakthrough comes when Ach gets drunk...on 7UP. And we miss it! Details after tell us Ach confesses his godhood, shrinks himself and and his ladylove, and takes her on a tour of a miniature Atlantis. But you, the reader, don't get to read what would likely be the best part.

In the end, this romance novel Part 3 is worthless to anyone who is not a long-time DH fan, and familiar with Ach. Parts 1 & 2 stand alone, and even if you've never read the series, if you're interested in the ancient world and human drama, you'd enjoy it.

I can't see why anyone would buy this book if they weren't a long-time DH fan, however, so I say get it! Acheron's history is not to be missed. His romance...that's up to your level of dedication as a fan.

I have been waiting impatiently for this book. When I finally got it last Friday I wasn't sure how to read it. The reviewers who said that the first part was too violent made me hesitant, since I wanted only to read good things about my hero Acheron. So I did, the unthinkable. I started with the second part. Once I was done, I realized I needed the 1st part to fully understand. So I unplugged the phone and dedicated all of Saturday to reading the 1st part and again the 2nd part. Yes, I must say the first part is a bit rough. But it is vital in understanding Acheron. Why is he really so skittish? No one could have possibly been hurt so badly. Well, think again. Knowing the first part, it also made me understand Acheron's more clumsy side when he was with Tory. And he had to be. Otherwise his kindness towards others wouldn't make sense if he cannot be more human towards someone who will mean so much to him. It could have been a bit longer in his quest to get Tory...but I think it is well done the way it is.
This book is one of the best in the DH series. I highly recommend it - you will not regret it. I just may have to read it again.

I loved this book! I've been waiting for Ash's story since the beginning! I read it in 3 days and then read it again just in case I missed something in my haste! I was sorry to get to the last page. Awesome job!

I have read all of the DH books and was looking forward to finally learning all of Ash's story. Unfortunatley, there was w-a-a-a-a-y too much of his story. The first 400 pages of the book deal with his horrible childhood and young adulthood. It could and should have been condensed to 100 pages. I only read about that much and still felt that I knew plenty about how he got to be who and how he was. The latter part of the book deals with the present day, it was good but not as good as I expected it to be. Overall, I felt letdown and I'm not sure that I will continue reading the series as it continues. The last few have been disappointing and this one continued the trend. So, I give the first part of the book a 1 for going on and on and on and the second part a 3. Overall, a 3 if you skip/skim most of the first 400 pages.

This was one of the best yet in the Dark-Hunter series. It answered a lot of my questions about where Acheron came from and what makes him tick. I'm glad he has found someone so he's not so alone anymore.

I'm so sorry for the folks who complained about the length of the book, but this is one that calls for the short attention span afflicted to either suck it up and deal or miss out on reading a well crafted, dense, amazing story. The whole thing makes one realize how much gratitude the humans who populate Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter world should have that Acheron Parthenopaeus fights so hard to keep humanity from being destroyed. How, instead of just shrugging his shoulders and fulfilling his own(very earned)desires of having and being able to hold his mother and feeling her love, he fights against her and allows the very beings who made his life hell the luxury of life. Humans should be the very last things Ash wants to keep alive, yet he does, because he knows what its like to be abused, thrown away, treated like trash and he doesn't want anyone to experience his tragic past(or learn about it, but who can blame him? Sorry, no spoiler here!).

This novel entertains on so many levels, it's rediculous! Yes, the first part is very hard to read with the very graphic situations, but it sums up what kind of person Ash has decided to be, what makes him tick, and how his regrets really hurt him more than anyone knows. He also learns how much he is loved and respected(FINALLY!) by his Dark Hunter family. Although it's necessary to have read the kinda weak Dream Hunter novel to get why some inside info and Sota's family are so integrated, Ms. Kenyon does a great job of putting this info into the story. I loved the "lost chapters" she added at the end, and I'm definitely pre-ordering the 13th Dark Hunter novel!

The beginning was very dark and descriptive it definitely explained why Ash is the way he is. It was hard to read because of how horrible his human life was but I'm glad I read it. The second half that was set in the present had all the witty quick humor I've come to love in Sherrilyn's writing. I think any real Sherrilyn Kenyon fan will appreciate this installment in the Dark Hunter Series and will be greatly satisfied with Ash and his heroine. Can't wait for the next one!

This has got to be the best Dark Hunter novel Kenyon has written to date. To top that off, it was like getting a bonus present--two books in one! To the fools that complained it should have been two books--idiots--would you send your boss back a second check? duh!

The first 400 pages described Asheron's first 21 years of life. It hit on all the important events that occurred: his birth, age 7 (when he was taken away by his uncle), age 14 (when his sister kidnapped him), age 15 (when they were found out), age 17 (uncles death), and so on. Everything that Kenyon has ever explained or hinted at in previous novels was included into the story in chronological order. Acheron's first years of life were horrible. He was an unwanted child that was labeled and scarred at birth due to his eyes and the seer who proclaimed him "the destroyer" to all those present at his birth. Because of this he was shun by all except his sister. Acheron was physically, mentally, and sexually abused through his entire childhood.

Acheron as a god in present day is a whole other story. He spent 1000 years hiding his past, afraid his men would not respect him if they knew his story. Afraid to lose the few loose friendships he has by becoming too close. And never wanting to love, because everything he loves, is destroyed--after all, he is THE destroyer. Yet, knowing what it was like to be mistreated and abused, he would never intentionally do that to someone else. Tory had the wonderful loving family, but both her parents are dead. Her father and uncle had died attempting to find the lost city of Atlantis and she has made it her life work to complete theirs and restore their good name. Acheron has plans of his own about stopping Tory, but when he realizes she has his sister's journal from so long ago and other very dangerous characters are hell bent on getting their hands on it even if it means killing Tory, he steps in to protect her.

Great, great story. I absolutely loved it.

For those of you out there that are Sherrilyn Kenyon and DH fans, this is the book to beat all books. The first four hundred plus pages are so sad and poignant that you need a box of tissues next to you. For those who have never read Sherrilyn Kenyon but want to get into some paranormal romance, this should be considered the book of the century. If this book was worth a hundred dollars, it would still be worth it to buy it! Don't miss out on the best book written!

Having read all the books in the Dark Hunter series that have been published I was really looking forward to the Acheron book on his life story. Was forewarned by my daughter who had read it before me that part of it was upsetting to say the least. Although brutal, but honest and to the point, it gave the reader an insight to Acheron's early life and the reader realised why he was always wary and evasive about his personal life.
However, reading the second half was wonderful and it was amazing that Acheron found someone to love who showed that his past did not deter her from wanting to be with him forever. Finished the book yesterday and felt elated and happy. Wonderful story and congratulations to Sherrilyn for keeping the reader on tenderhooks all the time.

I was a bit surprised at the brutality of the book. I believe she went a bit over board in her quest to make us understand Acheron and I don't think the length of his suffering was necessary. She is an excellent writer for this series and I look forward to completing the book - I have 3/4 done. I hope that I will read some positive and lighter side now that he has become his future. I will definitely need to read a comedy after this one.

I have already read this book twice. Its worth every minute.
The books first part in the form of Ryssa's(Ashs sister) diary is very sad and depressing but helps us understand Ash better.
The second part set in present is my favourite because that when he meets Tory and the fun begins

I'm not going to summarize the plot for you- you can get that elsewhere. I don't think SK was gratuitous- yes, Acheron's life was brutal, but I personally thought all of the details were necessary. It's a long story, and an engrossing one. Yes, this book was about Acheron- hello, title! No, the present-day love story DIDN'T take up as much of the book- but with the knowledge of Acheron's history, every event that takes place has more resonance than if you hadn't known exactly how much pain Acheron's endured. It's been a long time since I've felt so invested in a character, and that's due to the work Kenyon put into the first portion of the book. Sherrilyn Kenyon did a wonderful job, and I recommend this book to all of you.
