This publication is a must have for any student or professional writer to own. This book is very educational and was very helpful when I started school 10 years after graduation.

This book is neither fish nor fowl. It combines a very basic writing guide at an undergraduate level with radically abridged versions of scholarly style guides that purport to be adequate (but are not) for graduate students and scholars. This might be useful to undergraduates who are ill-prepared for post-secondary studies but will be woefully inadequate for everyone else. Frankly, I bought this because it was required by an instructor for a graduate course. That fact alone should have been my first clue that he would not prove to be much of a teacher.

I have the 4th edition of this book. It's been the most useful text book I ever bought. I've used it over and over for understanding how to correctly cite references in my papers in MLA format. It has notes for how to do things in APA and Chicago format as well, though MLA format is more prominent in this reference. I couldn't have ever gotten this far in college without it.

Never received, kept getting the same response, estimated delivery date was 4 weeks after I paid for item. Contacted Amazon and then was told by Amazon I would receive full credit then seller said I would receive credit. I will see if that happens when I receive my statement.

The book arrived later than I had expected. I had already been in class 2 weeks :( When it did come the condition was great just as promised.

I was directed to use "A Writer's Reference" beginning with the second addition. When I could choose texts for my classes, I voluntarily chose this very text, which I use for pre-freshman composition, freshman critical thinking/composition, literature/advanced composition, and critical thinking/advanced composition. The sixth edition is better than ever. Furthermore, it is the one book I tell my students to never sell back as I firmly believe it will take care of students' writing needs through their bachelors and beyond.

This book and the disc that come with it are an excellent resource for the high school and college student. The book covers several documenting (source citation) methods (MLA, APA and CMS) for writing essays and papers. This book has all the basics from writing a thesis to grammer. There is also a website that provides more help and practice problems. It comes with tabbed sections to make content very easy to locate quickly. Excellent, excellent book!

I regularly use this book in my work and have bought several copies for others -- it's easy to use (will lay flat due to spiral binding), well-organized and an easy read.

This is the assigned text in the English composition courses I currently teach. I had used the Little, Brown Handbook in the past. I find Hacker's book to be useful, concise, and pleasant to read. Her explanations are clear, the organization of the book is logical, and the included sections on MLA, APA, and CMS documentation formats are essential. The comb binding (so it lays flat when you open it) and section tabs are also nice.

The sixth edition continues the trend and is, if anything, even better than this fifth edition.

It is a great resource. I use it for work and other writing tasks. Thank you very much.

I am currently enrolled in graduate school, and the professors are very strict with written reports and proposals. The Writer's Reference is an excellent tool to use as a guide in APA, MLA, and Chicago style format. I have to use the APA format for school and the information within the guide is easy to read and very user friendly. I am doing very well with my written assignments and I truly love Ms. Hacker's reference materials she is excellent with details. I recommend this as a must buy for any grad student.

I taught editing workshops for many years using the Harbrace Handbook as the basic reference. At the suggestion of a former colleague, I agreed to take a look at his favorite, The Bedford Handbook.

The first thing I noticed was its publisher's claim that the Bedford is the all-time best-selling college textbook. I used to introduce the Harbrace to my classes by quoting its publisher's identical claim. (Sic gloria transit mundi.)

Perusing the Bedford, I agree it is decidedly more user-friendly. For example, Harbrace's opening chapters on grammar introduce adjectival and adverbial clauses without adequate explanations, which discouraged many students. Bedford begins its grammar section with the traditional parts of speech; in contrast, Harbrace mentions "parts of speech" only in its Glossary of Terms at the very end of the book.

Bedford's invites readers to visit its open-access website comprising: electronic writing exercises; electronic grammar exercises; electronic research exercise; language debates; resources for writers and tutors; model papers; research and documentation online. This feature makes Bedford a truly amazing tool for self-learning.

The pages on Language Debates, I hope, will be enhanced in future editions. Too few entries; for example fewer/less usage issue is not mentioned. Moreover, Bedford makes no mention of THE MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH USAGE, published in 1989, which comprises 2300 usage issues and 20,000 quotations from writers. (No doubt the editors of the Bedford are aware of this book. The usage books they cite are much more prescriptive than Merriam-Webster's descriptive, scholarly approach.)

Notwithstanding the website's weak section on Language Debates, I'll switch from Harbrace to Bedford.
