After meeting Baby and Jana in person, I just had to read more. This book has the painful story but shows the many people who are trying to make a difference by bringing awareness about puppy mills to the public. A must read for a heartwarming cause!

This book sucked me right in. I am so happy someone has finally stepped up to the plate about puppy mills. Jana Kohl did an amazing job telling people the truth about puppy mills and pleaded with anyone getting a dog to save one and NOT to buy from a store or from a breeder. Although there are responsible breeders many are not and she asks people to become aware and to ask questions, visit and demand to see where their puppies live. I was touched by many of the stories. It was a wonderful book to read and to share. Once you read it you will want to pass it on to others to enjoy the book and hopefully get the word out! Thanks Jana for doing a great job!!!!!

This is a wonderful book. I don't usually read books about things like puppy mills because it is too painful. But this book, although it deals with the tragic suffering of animals in puppy mills, was written in such a way that love and compassion come through too. The author took Baby to visit with famous people and politicians around the country to get their support to end the horrendous abuse Baby suffered and many other dogs suffer all day every day of their lives in puppy mills. The overwhelming support she received is a testament of humanity at its finest. And it's impossible not to fall in love with Baby!

I almost didn't go to the Seattle book signing for this book, I thought the book would be too sad. I'm glad I went, the experience had a profound effect on me. Jana Kohl did a wonderful job presenting Baby's story in a way that is also uplifting. This book is a wonderful gift for anyone who likes animals, and of course the perfect gift for the dog lover on your list. Buy the book, it will inspire you.

A Rare Breed of Love is a must read for anyone that has compassion in their hearts. The Puppy Mill industry is a hidden disgrace in this Country. Pet Stores, Backyard breeders and huge mills are profiting from abuse of companion animals that only want to share our lives and give us unconditional love in return for responsible care for their welfare. Please do as I did and buy this as a gift, pass it around to friends. Learn what is happening to beautiful animsls like Baby. My friend had our local Library purchase it after reading it. Read it and contact your legislators telling them you want homeless dogs to find homes and dogs not to be bred over and over to put money in the pockets of people who treat these animals with callous disregard for their emotional and physical welfare. This book was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I applaud Jana Kohl, she is giving a voice to her voiceless Baby.

The subtitle of this book is "the true story of Baby and the mission she inspired to help dogs everywhere." Baby was a puppy mill breeder, the kind of dog which is confined in a tiny cage, forced to have litter after litter, and then "disposed of." Because of the abuse, Baby had only three legs when Jana found her through petfinder.com. She decided to adopt Baby, and flew from Chicago to California to pick up the 9-year-old poodle. This book also has some celebrity commentary on animals, and makes the reader aware, in a fairly gentle way, of the conditions to which animals purchased at a pet store or online may have been subjected. Jana also brings up the provocative question: Where does society draw the line for cruelty? I particularly liked two of the quotes in the book. The first is from Dr. Albert Schweitzer: "Until man extends the circle of kindness to all living creatures he will not find peace." The second is from Gandhi : "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

The author needs to make distinctions. Breeders are not the bad guys if breeder has a few dogs, shows the dogs and breeds after dog has gained status and only with carefully selected partner. A puppy mill, on the other hand, is something to be outlawed. There must be a distinction. A person (breeder) who competes in shows with one or two dogs, worries about their diet and coat texture, makes sure every dog is trained and socialized, takes years to decide on the right mate (if that decision is ever made), cannot be lumped together with a person who treats their 150 dogs like chickens in battery cages just popping out profit like eggs from a hen. Read that line "a friend who worked in animal welfare, and she was horrified that I would even consider buying a dog from a breeder". Horrified to get a dog from a breeder? That is where we part company. Also, has anybody every looked at some of the nastiest puppy mill operators, the Amish, for example, who treat their animals so badly they shame us all. The Amish dump uncounted puppies into the system every year for profit...and where are the controls for any of these puppy mills? Overall a well written book and on a subject that needs to be in the public eye. But, let's get rid of the puppy mills and not the honest and caring breeders. There is a very big difference.

If you love animals, especially dogs, buy this book(the proceeds go to the Humane Society in the fight against puppy mills.) I bought several for family and friends and everyone loved it. Some even gave money to donate to the Humane Society who are working with Jana to make puppy mills illegal.

This is a must read book. This is an important and compassionate story about a woman's journey to find a dog. In a search for her dog Baby she encountered the horrible conditions dogs endure at the hands of unscrupulous breeders. As a result Jana became inspired to do something about it. She and the now famous Baby, her three legged dog, travel the United States to speak to groups about changing the laws that allow puppy farms to exist. An inspiring story that moves one to action. Bravo, Jana Kohl.

I purchased this book on a trip to Costco - having no intentions to shop other than routine groceries --- then the CUTE dog on the cover compelled me to open and browse. Not only did I stop and look inside - I purchased 3 copies to give to my fellow animal lover friends.
This canine biography works on so many levels with the endearing photos of pro-animal activists and citizens - but most of all - telling the story from the point of view through Baby's eyes brings home the agony of the suffering caused by puppy mills. Credit should also go to the Oprah show for devoting air time to this sad subject giving it the attention it deserves with Lisa Ling's in-depth puppy mill profile. I believe Baby was a featured guest on that show - so I was moved to see the photos in this book. Jana - Keep up the good work on your mission to educate people to the suffering inflicted by our fellow humans - I agree with Andy Rooney's quote - "the average dog is a nicer person than the average person" - how sad but true! Buy this book to share with family and friends ... most of all don't forget to spay and neuter your pets. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-06 21:16:17 EST)

A Rare Breed Of Love is a beautifully written book, one that WILL touch your heart each and every time you turn the pages. This book is a wonderful tool for education about the cruetly of puppy mills. Give this book to everyone you know who loves dogs. Reach out to stop this horror. I was lucky enough to meed Baby and her 'Ma', what an incredibly beautiful and sweet girl. This is probably one of the most important books written about animal advocacy.

Jana Kohl is a hero and is such an inspiration. I would never go into another pet store after reading her book. Everybody should read this book; besides being educational it is extremely well-written. I think if enough people are enlightened by her book, it can really make a difference in the lives of so many dogs and cats, and other animals as well. I'm buying this book for all of the animal lovers I know!

Baby's story is a must- read for dog lovers everywhere. Unfortunately, her story is not unique, it is the story of all the pure-bred dogs and designer dogs you see all over the place---the ones from the pet store or the internet seller. The truth is they are from horrific puppy mills. Thank goodness Jana Kohl has not only given Baby a wonderful life, but she has been inspired to write a poignant and moving account of her journey from being a prisoner of greed in a canine supermax prison to a loving home.
Bravo Jana, for writing such a beautiful book. I know it will inspire millions of people to make the only ethical choice when bringing a companion animal into one's heart and home, to adopt a four-legged friend from your local shelter. We all salute Baby on her national book tour and wish her the success she deserves! Carole Raphaelle Davis www.hollywoodjinky.com (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-06 21:16:17 EST)

"A Rare Breed of Love" is coffee table type book - short stories/chapters, glossy pages, lots of wonderful photos. You can read it from beginning to end or skip to certain parts. The book centers around a three legged dog who came from a puppy mill and, with her owner, has gone on to become spokespeople (or "spokesdog") to fight puppy mills and why we should care about the treatment of animals.
I enjoyed both reading all the stories as well as looking at all the pictures of Baby with celebrities. The book starts with the story of Baby, her adoption story, an overview of puppy mills, and how Baby accidentally became a celebrity "spokesdog" against this horrible practice. The book continues with pictures of Baby and various politicians, celebrities, animal activists, etc. Along with the photos, most of the celebrities also tell a short story of their love of animals, why we should care about how we treat animals, etc. I have found myself drawn to this book and continuing picking it up every day since I purchased it last week. I plan to buy copies for other animal lovers in my life. Its a beautiful book that will surely touch your heart. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-06 21:16:17 EST)

Read this love story about a three legged dog named Baby and Jana, the woman who rescued her, and you'll feel inspired, knowing that each one of us can make a difference in the world when we make the right choice. The author takes us through her search to find a dog, seeing first hand the horrors of a puppy mill and ultimately love at finding Baby and giving her a forever home. Like the celebs in the photos with Baby, you'll love her and her story. And armed with the information in the book, you'll never buy a dog at a pet store again. A beautiful book about a dog named Baby who is a puppy mill survivor. The book
has great photos of Baby with celebs, politicians, and animal lovers. When you see the love Baby shows throughout the photos you see that she has not lost her hope in humanity. A perfect companion to anybody who saw the Oprah show on puppy mills and wants to learn more about it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-09 01:04:43 EST)
