| A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
For close to sixty years Kate L. Turabian's Manual for Writers has offered comprehensive and detailed guidance to authors of research papers—term papers, theses, and dissertations. Now the editors of The Chicago Manual of Style have revised Turabian's Manual to bring the details of style into conformity with the fourteenth edition of The Chicago Manual. This new edition of Turabian also reflects the way students work today, taking into account the role of personal computers in the preparation and presentation of their papers.
The familiar organization of this popular book remains largely unchanged. Chapter 1 describes the parts of a long formal paper. Chapters 2-5 introduce the mechanics of writing style, from abbreviations to quotations. Chapters 6 and 7 show how to prepare and refer to tables and illustrations. The section on documentation, chapters 8-12, describes two of the most commonly used systems of citation; these chapters provide many examples including guidance on how to cite electronic documents. Chapter 13, on manuscript preparation, shows how to take advantage of word processing software to present the elements of a paper clearly and effectively. Chapter 14 offers more than two dozen sample pages illustrating ways of formatting some of the complex features found in many research papers. Authoritative, comprehensive, easy to use, and filled with good sense, this new edition will be the standard for yet another generation of students and their teachers. Kate Turabian (1893-1987) was dissertation secretary at the University of Chicago from 1930 to 1958. This manual and her Student's Guide for Writing College Papers made her name so well known that she has become "part of the folklore of American higher education" (Quill and Scroll). |

Newly revised to conform with the Chicago Manual of Style, Turabian's Manual for Writers provides comprehensive, detailed, superior guidance to writers of research papers. From "Parts of the Paper" (including the niceties of copyrights and dedications) to "Sample Layouts," everything to do with format is covered. Mechanics of style (abbreviations to quotations) are reviewed, there's help on tables and illustrations, and chapters on bibliographies, parenthetical references, note taking, and citations. There are suggestions for manuscript preparation, hints on word-processing software, and formatting for research papers' more complex features. When you're up to your eyebrows in research data, it's a vast relief to have quick, accessible, reliable answers to your questions of structure, scholarly propriety, and academic style. --Stephanie Gold

While excellent in its own right, the 15th Edition Chicago Manual contains all this work's information and then some. Indeed, the Chicago Manual is more extensive, detailed, and useful in general. Don't bother with this one if you have any heavy writing to do.

The book was recommended by a professor at my university. I found it to be a nice addition to my collection of background for doctoral style writing. It is in a nice format like an index or outline and easy to follow as a reference when writing.

I have used this book in my project and dissertation research as well as writing papers and the book met all my needs. I found the book to contain detailed guidelines that facilitated my writing exercises, including paper layouts, formatting, citing references, manuscript preparation, advice on word-processing software, among several other tips and hints. The book is suitable for those undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate research studies or anyone wishing to produce a high quality piece of writing. Although there is room for updating the book to meet the latest technological developments, this does not detract from the fact that this is one of the best books around on guidance on writing papers, theses and dissertations. The book is highly recommended for those writing academic or professional papers and projects, including publishing articles in journals and periodicals. This book was suggested by name for two of my college courses. It takes some of the fear out of turning in a paper that requires notation. It should be an item of reference on any student's shelf.

This book is not laid out ina practical manner. This book is very technical, and in the midst of writing a paper, you do not have time to be technical.

This book is a must-have for anyone writing a college level or above paper. I've found that it's better used as a reference, not as the kind type of book you sit down and read. One warning, it is a manual, so it's pretty dry - dry, but necessary.

I was instructed by several of my past professors that this book would be the guiding light in regards to submitting & creating scholarly materials in my academic writing matriculation. They were right, this book regardless of its many editions has been in my possession for the last 6-7 years. Academians of all concentrations when it comes down to the publishing of Termpapers, Thesis, or Dissertations, you really cannot go wrong with this Chicago-style format. This book made assessing materials, writing papers, citations, proper documentation, and even grading essay papers as a college instructor an enjoyable experience. However, as a undergraduate and graduate student I was introduced to this bible. Now I am entertaining the idea of future editing. I recomment this book to all of my students and colleagues alike!

For those who actually require a Turabian manual for papers it is very helpful and thorough on all accounts. The manual may take a minute to fully understand so be sure time is alotted for understanding and comprehension of the information presented. Worth the buck.

This book is a great help to me in writing my Theses for my master's degree at New York Theological Seminary. One of the greatest thing about ordering this book was that it was in stock at amazon. Thanks again and I received the book the very next day.

Overall I found this guide pretty confusing, but I guess it is better than nothing. There are better choices, and some may want to consider auto-formatting software such as Eazypaper and others.

This is not a newly revised edition as stated in the Amazon.com description. It needs to be revised to conform to the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. Nevertheless, it is the standard basic level guide to the Chicago style of bibliography and footnoting.

The text is exactly what it claims to be. I purchased this book for a course in Historical Methods and I've used it to the point of needing a second copy. This manual is so incredibly detailed and concise that I wouldn't think of writing a paper (in any course or context) without it! I love it, it gives detailed instructions and examples for just about every scenario one might stumble upon in writing, whether it be research or not. I'd definately recommend this manual to anyone, academic, professional, or anyone else; who writes in any form.

The reader is another person.
Regardless of the rules, talk to that person! Lay it out in human terms... Than another person can relate to. There is no excuse for bad writing. - Clint Arthur, author of "Free Your Love Now" (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-12-14 05:49:34 EST)

I used this for several years as an undergrad, and now that I'm being sucked into APA-heck, I look back on it fondly. It covered everything I ever needed to know to write a paper. Some reviewers have complained that it is not sufficiently modern, that it does not provide a citation style for web pages, etc. This is incorrect. Section 8.141, on page 151, shows us how to do this. (Some ellision from the demonstrated form will probably be necessary, but it works.) You didn't invent the internet, kids. It's been around for a few years, and the grown-ups really do know about it.
Turabian, Grossman, and Bennett did make several assumptions about the reader of their book. They assumed he or she is capable of using a table of contents, and of reading rather large chunks of text and assimilating or marking the relevant portions. If one lacks the intellectual fortitude to do that, one should probably skip this manual and ask their instructor if they can use the "Golden Books" or "DC Comics" manual of style. Have you ever noticed that more people read the good reviews more than the bad ones?
This book is appropriate for what it is meant for. If you know Turabian died prior to a new edition of the book, then maybe you should be using your PC to search for electronic resources (using Turabian font in the search engine)..... and not wasting time being negative... This book was recommended for one of my classes. However, the book is not very useful. I tried to find the correct way to cite a web page - but the book doesn't list any type of electronic sources. It desperately needs to be updated to include modern technology.

Turabian is the norm for citation in most North American post-graduate institutions. It is also garbage. Poorly-arranged and deeply counter-intuitive, finding the entry you want takes far too much time--assuming it appears in the book at all. Kate Turabian died years ago and every grad student in America is the victim of her family's inheritance. Still, it's a standard.

This is one of my favorite books. Okay, yes, I admit it, I'm a nerd. But I'm a nerd that did very well on all of my college papers because I knew the proper tabulation of a footnote.
It is essentially an abridged version of the Chicago Manual of Style, for prose writing. Most of the CMS is pretty useless for what most people deal with, and I personally think it's hard to find anything in. Turabian, on the other hand, is a concise little paperback that offers information that no online service can compete with. If you're going to buy one reference book for college, this should be it. Forget the dictionary, forget the thesaurus: they come with Microsoft and you can find perfectly good ones online. Turabian is all you'll need in life. Call it "Turabian" too, as in "I was looking through my Turabian last night, and it says to use the Oxford comma" and you'll instantly impress all of your professors, graduate with honors, and be accepted to the med school of your choice. Turabian's book is an absolutely essential resource for any college undergraduate or graduate student that wants to produce quality papers. There's a reason this book is a "classic" work assigned in many English and other humanities classes for many years, it covers nearly everything from the posessive of Jesus to how to cite book chapters to format footnotes and tables of contents.
I do agree that the book does need to be updated to include internet resources, hopefully this will be done in a new edition soon. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-20 16:39:09 EST)

This book provides wonderful advice to all students who have hard time writing. Turabian is a wonderful author and her advices can get you the "A" grade, but you have to do your homework. If you want positive result, then you must practice what you read. And those reviewers who say it is not clearly written, I do not believe it is the fault of the author. I never had a hard time reading this book. Students, if you are commited to college, read this book.

The 6th edition, the latest edition, is a required guideline for many students at the university level. However, it is also a necessary guide to follow in order to publish articles in many current journals, periodicals, and scholarly texts. Thus, it is safe to say that this guideline is a must. However, this book, while it is formatted for "easy" use, is often times not at all easy to use. My biggest complaint is that many of the mechanical guidelines that are similar are not grouped together in this text and that means you have to go hunting through the book to find the exact place for certain "lone rules." The book itself needs to be updated further so it will include the latest in computer technology (i.e. the World Wide Web, etc.) All in all, it is helpful in many ways (i.e. citations, bibliography, notes, etc.) How can you not recommend a standard text/guideline that is required in university all over the U.S.?

because in my class i would get docked points just for not putting a period in the correct spot! oh well. it's not too bad of a book. quite complex though. you'd think that our civilization becoming more advanced, we'd find an easier way to write. oh well, we can't all have the world.

While Turabian does provide for the most part ample and lucid descriptions of the varied types of possible citations and reference notes, it is lacking in the area of online and internet citations. The section on online documentation is brief and entirely fails to mention world wide web or other internet sources. The reader is left on his own to cite this important category of sources.
