The pictures in this book are beautiful and detailed. Well worth the money. If I could change just one thing it would be to add even more pictures as the book tends to skip over a few weeks here and there. Would prefer to have at least one picture for every week of the process.

I bought this book 27 years ago when I was expecting my first child and when my daughter told me she was planning a family, I immediately purchased the updated version for her. This book remains a classic! The pictures are unbelievable and so beautiful and vivid. Because it's a European book, the childbirth pictures may be more graphic than what we are used to here in the States, but look beyond that to see the beauty and wonder of childbirth depicted in this amazing book. I highly recommend it!

I remember seeing this book at the doctors office when I was 7 years old when my mom was pregnant with my brother at the time. she did not want me to look at the book (I guess she didnt want me to ask her questions). I saw this book and remembered the cover and decided that I wanted to own it. The pictures are outstanding and I find myself constantly going to look at the different stages as I am reaching them. I wasn't able to do this with my first daughter(now thirteen) but I am having the pleasure now with this pregnancy. Nice to own and also good to show an older child whats going on inside of mommy.

Awesome book; the pictures are fabulous. You can tell some of the pictures are a bit dated, but the in-the-womb pictures are still beyond compare to what else is out there. I only wish there were more pictures, like on a weekly basis- but I suppose what was in the book was already hard enough to come by.

I definitely recommend this book!

Fantastic book. I had this book for my first pregnancy, gave it to a friend, bought two more friends the book, and bought it again for myself with my latest pregnancy. Beautiful, amazing fetus pictures. Kind of funny, dated pictures of the expectant parents but still excellent. Graphic birthing pictures but still really good.

My wife and I are expecting our first baby in February, so in addition to all the pregnancy manuals, we picked up this breath-taking book as well. It has some of the most amazing pictures I've seen anywhere, bar none.

The writing in the book seems to be geared to a younger or less technical audience, so if you're a biologist or a doctor you may find it a bit dumbed down. For those less versed with the workings of the human reproductive system, reading as well as looking at the pictures is probably a good thing.

Regardless of your status with the intelligentsia, you will find the photographs to be amazing and enlightening. Buy it already!

(Hide Review...)  Buy this book for the pictures - not for the information
Reviewer Permalink
The pictures are truly mindblowing but a lot of the information is out of date and inaccurate. I would not use this book as a source for maternity information.

On a more minor note it also splits the pregnancy up into strange time periods, sometimes there are several weeks between one update and the next, which is weird for such a picture heavy text.

That said the pictures are great and worth the price. (Even if they are mostly the same ones from the 1970s Nilsson Life Magazine spread.) If you want a good resource when expecting, this is not it. The parts with the out of date info are not only irritating but occasionally dangerous and contradict what is written in several other books Dr. Sears books are a very good choice comprehensive and non-judgmental and, some say, not as scary as What to Expect.

I was given this book (in Swedish) by my parents-in-law and I just had to get an English language version for my friend when she was expecting. Lennart Nilsson is a very well-known medical photographer, using extremely high-tech equipment and methods. The photography is just phenomenal! A few things you may want to know: This was produced in the 80s and released in 1990, so be ready for some very out-of-date looking people in a lot of the pictures. Also, toward the end of the book are photos of several different sorts of births, with close-ups that would've been blurred out on television. I chose not to censor this from my children, but you may want to keep this in mind if you will be showing this book to your children and you don't want them to see that yet.

I bought this book hoping to see the mind blowing photogrpahs promised by other reviewers. If that is what you are after, I would strongly suggest buying Nennart Nilsson's other book, 'Life' instead of this one... sure, this has a few such pictures but they are intermixed with lame 1970's looking pictures of couples about to 'do it', etc. and a lot of unremarkable text.

If you really want to see some interesting footage from the womb, try checking out national geographic's 'in the womb' series on dvd...the one on multiples is particularly amazing.

In 1979 - when I was pregnant with my first child - there was little technology and no internet. This book was at my side through the entire pregnancy and through the next two pregnancies, too.

My eldest daughter - the one born in 1979 - is now expecting. The first thing I did was order her this book. Even with today's technology, she refers to it constantly and knows exactly what my grandchild is doing and how she is growing.

This book would be a wonderful gift and one that should be passed down from mother to daughter. Providing that Mom doesn't wear out the original copy like I did!

I am currently expecting and I bought the book because I thought it would provide a realistic view of what is going on inside my body, for my two daughters ages 7 & 9. The pictures in this book are truly amazing. They depict the fetus at each stage of development in real pictures as opposed to drawings. It even has a picture of an actual delivery, which was useful for explaining to my girls the process of delivery. The book is quite informative as well - for adults. A bit too much for children. But I really didn't buy the book for the information. I bought it for the pictures.

(Hide Review...)  A unique book documenting an amazing journey
Reviewer Permalink
We received this book from my father-in-law as a gift after we announced my wife's pregnancy. It was really a very good choice for a gift to expectant parents.

Unlike other pregnancy books, which tend to be informational and focus on the the medical changes that occur to mother and baby during pregnancy, A Child is Born is a photographic and informational journey of the developing fetus. This book is not meant to substitute for the pregnancy guides that are out there that offer much more detailed information to expectant parents. Instead, this is more of an emotional journey celebrating the process of creating a new life.

The photography is spectacular and the writing is lucid and engaging. This is a wonderful book for an expectant couple to go through together. There is information here as well, and it is updated from the previous editions to be current, but I think the real appeal of this book is what it will make you feel.

There is much about pregnancy that is practical and informational. This book is unique in its balance of information and imagery. If you are considering a gift for an expectant mother or couple, consider giving this book. Many people will buy their own pregnancy guides or receive them as gifts. Those books are necessary and helpful. But this book can be a truly special gift to remind the couple to enjoy what is happening to them. Highly recommended.
