7th Heaven (Women's Murder Club)

A terrible fire in a wealthy suburban home leaves a married couple dead--and Detective Lindsay Boxer and her partner Rich Conklin searching for clues. And after California's golden boy, Michael Campion has been missing for a month, there finally seems to be a lead in his case--a very devastating lead. As fire after fire consume couples in wealthy, comfortable homes, Lindsay and the Murder Club must race to find the arsonists responsible and get to the bottom of Michael Campion's disappearance. But suddenly the fires are raging too close to home. Frightened for her life and torn between two men, Lindsay must find a way to solve the most daunting dilemmas she's ever faced--at work and at home.

I like all of James Patterson's books, but I am particularly fond of the Women's Murder Club and was excited when it became a series on television. This particular novel was very personal for all of the characters and that is what seemed to draw me in even more.

Patiently waiting for the next one!

I have become a huge Patterson after reading the 5th Horseman, lapsed on the 6th Target and found my way back for 7th Heaven. I just love the play on numbers. This is the 7th novel in his Women's Murder Club series and the book starts off in as far a place from heaven as possible with victims found bound and gagged and burned. Yet the mystery doesn't begin there as Patterson reveals to us who the culprits are. The mystery begins in a two-plot fold. The SFPD are tracking down the culprits of a recent arson and the assistant DA and member of the Woman's Murder Club with a young harlot suspected in the disappearance of Mike Campion. But the DA is having relationship problems and is on the brink of self-destruction while the SFPD aren't having much luck either. Being new to Patterson it's difficult for me to comment on his past works, but I doubt the King of the Mystery Thriller would put his name on anything but the best. I'd also like to recommend the highly anticipated novel by Georgiou Tino: The Fates: Best of 2008

The Women's Murder Club scores another hit with 7th HEAVEN. A fast read in what has become the standard short chapter style, the pages almost turn for you. Lindsay Boxer is torn between two loves, her job and her live in lover. But the job takes precedence when two killers stalk the streets.
Yuki Castellano faces the toughest murder trial of her career without evidence or a body. While Lindsay and her partner Rich Conklin investigate a brutal pair of arsonists.
7th Heaven is any thing but as the beautiful people of San Francisco burn.

When I selected this item, it did indicate that it was a hard cover, but I was a little disappointed to receive what looks like a Doubleday hard cover and not a hardcover that would have been sold in stores. Other than that, the book was in excellent condition.

The Woman's Murder Club is made up of Detective Lindsay Boxer, Assistant D.A. Yuki Castellano, Medical Examiner Claire Washburn and Reporter Cindy Thomas, so when these girls sink their teeth into a crime in San Francisco, Criminal lookout.

In this outing popular and well liked Michael Campion, son of the past Governor of California has been kidnapped. We learn fairly soon that hooker Junie Moon was present when Michael was killed, but did she do it?

Meanwhile some guys named Pidge and Hawk are burning down the houses of the wealthy, while the wealthy are still in them, and that'll get the attention of the SFPD real quick, crispy rich people.

So there you have the crimes the gals are going to dig into when you dig into this fast paced book (and the pace is made even faster by Mr. Patterson's short chapters: 376 pagers cut up into a whopping 125 chapters. You can do the math, they're short.) I read the book in one sitting, just couldn't put it down.

I am a big Patterson fan, and liked the first couple of books in this series. But more and more it seems like a cheap Romance novel and not a mystery. I find the plots more contrived and not as interesting. This will be the last in this series that I purchase, I find the things I don't like being emphasized more and more, at the cost of having a good mystery.

I love this series - I give it 5 stars!
This book is a great addition, I like that Lindsay's character has been developing and moves along in 7th Heaven. When I first read the jacket cover I hoped he was not going to turn the series into a Stephanie Plum read-a-like! The characters are strong and I would hate to see the books get hung up on Lindsay getting married or not - she can be married and the series will only get stronger.
Can't wait to see what "the girls" are up to next JP - bring on 8!

Difficult to catch some shuteye with one eye open trying to finish the book.

Another in Patterson's prodigious output, this novel is part of the Women's Murder Club series. Part of its interest lies in the issues it raises of friends who have professional responsibilities that at times require secrecy from one another. This newest of the series includes all the elements we've grown to expect: murder of the most bizarre and horrific type, scientific explanations and research to aid in finding solutions, romance challengd by job responsibilities, courtroom drama, and the occasional madman. Each of the women characters remains true to form, and that is part of the series' charm; its predictability takes the edge off the horrors the characters face. Perfectly satisfactory light reading.

I've been a fan of The Women's Murder Club series for a long time and did enjoy each book, however, James Patterson's new one, 7th Heaven, is a big disappointment. There was no character substance. There was basically 2 stories going on in this book; one was about a missing rich kid and the other story of 2 kids who started fires and killed people. Both stories had no depth and both were uninteresting. As I was reading this book, I had hoped the stories would develop more and get more interesting, but both were flat. It felt like James Patterson just was in such a rush to get another Women's Murder Club book out, he threw it together with no thought.
It's a good thing I didn't buy this book and got it from the library!
Save your money and don't buy this book

What an excellent series! I was not a James Patterson reader until after I started watching the Women's Murder Club on ABC. Then I went out and bought all of the books in the series! Each one can stand on it's own but you really need to read them in order for the goings-on of the central characters. Too bad the bozos at ABC cancelled the show before giving it a solid chance. The show may be gone, but the books are still here and so worth reading!! Thank you Mr. Patterson. I'm already looking forward to the 8th one.

Interesting with twists and turns and complicated storylines, which is why 4 stars. However, the serialized missing person and the serial arsonist plots were too serial and reminded me: years ago I knew a person who wrote for a popular Soap. There were a bunch of people who wrote the treatments for each hour show. I've read treatments, and this reminded me of those. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it's not what I hoped to read. Old fashioned thriller mysteries: Ghost in the Rainbow or A Taste For Death or One Corpse Too Many: The Second Chronicle of Brother Cadfael

The story is tight with its twists and turns and complicated storylines, which is why 4 stars instead of 2. However, the missing person and the serial arsonist plots are annoying when they overlap because the process seems more for tv drama than something plausable. I am going back to basic murder mystery books. This isn't one of them. You can't go wrong with one of these: Ghost in the Rainbow or A morbid taste for bones or One Corpse Too Many: The Second Chronicle of Brother Cadfael

I am sorry to say that I have to agree with those other reviewers that found this newest entry into the "Women's Murder Club" series to be a disappointment.
The whole plot line with the prostitute who confesses to being with the "golden" boy at the time of his death was thin to the point of being transparent. I find it very hard to believe that any D.A. would take a case to court where the only thing you have is an untaped confession with no substantiating evidence. As far as the ending in this case, I suspected something of this sort from the very beginning of the story, no big surprise or tension here at all.
The second plot line was much more interesting but since I was already disgusted by the first plot, I found it hard to get interested in the second.
Overall, if you are new to the series, start with one of the other books and skip this one. Hopefully, the next in the series will get back to good storytelling.

7th Heaven was just an "Okay" read. Something I'm not used to saying when it comes to James Patterson's novels. While it did keep me entertained for the most part, it was lacking what I loved most about the WMC books...which was the relationship between the four women and and all of them actually having a part in solving the cases. It also focused entirely too much on Lindsay Boxer's personal life. I can take it in small doses, but this was like half the cases and half her love life. This book focused more on Lindsay and Yuki as opposed to the rest of them. Claire only played a minor role and Cindy (who is by far my favorite character in the show and in the books) has been reduced to mere cameos.

So, like I said, it at least kept me mildly entertained, but I still couldn't get past the fact that this was focused mostly on one woman instead of the women as a whole. The ending although "shocking" was a bit far-fetched. I still recommend the book, though.

Well now...James Patterson has proceeded to move into yet another "Women's Murder Club" venture. This time he has a co-author, which makes me wonder if he's about drained of his own thoughts. I don't know who wrote this book...Patterson or Maxine Paetro. Anyway, it's fairly good.
Seems as though a youngish prosty was accused of letting a heart-damaged guy lose his virginity. Supposedly he died in her arms. She calls boyfriend (Who in their right mind would let a prostitute become a "girlfriend"?) and they dismember and remove the body parts...blah, blah, blah. The DA member of the Women's Murder Club group tries the prosty and loses...because of no body, etc.
Anyway, the finish does -- finally -- tie it all together. (I'll not reveal it. Go ahead and buy the darn book!

I love the Women's Murder Club series better than Cross - mostly because Cross tends to be gorier. But, I didn't enjoy 7th Heaven as much as the other books in the series. There wasn't as much interaction between Lindsey, Claire, Cindy & Yuki as in the other books of the series, and this is one of the things I enjoyed the most in the other books. And, the two stories seemed to drag just a bit, until near to the end of the book. But, when the stories picked up, they picked up in the Patterson fashion that I love.

(Hide Review...)  Lackluster Entry in the Series

I see I'm in the minority here, but I was terribly disappointed in this entry in the Women's Murder Club series. I did not find it "gripping," as one review said, although I always love to read these books, and I can't in all honesty say I didn't like the book.

I think my problem is that I never engaged. As many reviewers have said, there are two plots here: One about the disappearance of the ex-governor's son, Michael Campion, who is the state's "golden boy" (a la JFK Jr.) with a scary heart condition; and a series of brutal arson/murders that we know are being conducted by two arrogant college students.

The book reels between the two plots, sometimes confusingly so. Our women are all involved in one way or the other: Yuki is trying the case of the young and naive prostitute Junie Moon, who confessed to having Campion die in her arms and subsequently chopping up and disposing of his body. (I found this character completely unbelievable throughout, especially at the end!)

Very pregnant Claire is performing autopsies on the hapless murder/burn victims. Cindy is writing about the Campion case, but is not really a presence in this book. And Lindsay is involved in both cases at once and is being so annoying with her love life, I wanted to throw the book across the room!

I would never say not to read this book, but don't expect the adventure and spine-tingling thrills of some of the others. It's just not here.

(Hide Review...)  A Solid Continuation of the Women's Murder Club Series
Reviewer Permalink
Yesterday I finally got my hands on a copy of "7th Heaven" by James Patterson. The book is a continuation of the story of the Women's Murder Club, composed of Sergeant Lindsay Boxer, crime reporter Cindy Thomas, Assistant District Attorney Yuki Castellano and medical examiner Claire Washburn, all of San Francisco.

In the seventh novel in the series, Lindsay and her partner Rich are called in to interrogate a suspect in the disappearance of Michael Campion, son of the former governor of California. When the prostitute they've hauled in to question unexpectedly confesses, Yuki is called in to begin her prosecution. At the same time, Lindsay and Rich get wrapped up in a string of arson's at the homes of well-to-do couples who end up dead in the fires.

Jason Twilly is a true crime writer who is covering the Michael Campion case. His interest in Yuki goes from professional to romantic to down-right psychotic. After the verdict on the Campion cases comes in, Yuki has to put together the pieces on Twilly before he does something dangerous.

Aside from the cases she is working, Lindsay is also dealing with her own inner turmoil. Joe has moved from Washington DC to San Francisco to be closer to Lindsay, but for some reason (perhaps her partner Rich?) she hasn't been able to say yes to his proposal of marriage. Can she solve the mystery of the fire's, help get Michael's murderer convicted, protect Yuki from Jason and take care of herself and her relationship?

Claire and Cindy take a backseat in "7th Heaven".This book really revolves around Lindsay and Yuki. I did enjoy this book, but it was the first in the Women's Murder Club series that I have not sat and read cover-to-cover without a break. The storylines were good and the characters were as enjoyable as ever, but it didn't have that same spark as the other books in the series have held for me but I still suggest reading it if you are a James Patterson fan.

I've read all the Alex Cross books up to about a couple years ago and I've read Honeymoon, also by Mr. Patterson and liked it, but I've never read any of the Woman's Murder Club books. I don't know why, probably because there's so much stuff out there to read and not nearly enough time, especially if you want to have a life.

That said, I got a call from a friend of mine in Reno and during the course of the conversation she went off on a rave about this book, said I had to read it, so I ordered it from Amazon, gave it a read and I did like it.

Meanwhile some guys named Pidge and Hawk are burning down the houses of the wealthy, while the wealthy are still in them, and that'll get the attention of the SFPB real quick, crispy rich people.

So there you have the crimes the gals are going to dig into when you dig into this fast paced book (and the pace is made even faster by Mr. Patterson's short chapters: 376 pagers cut up into a whopping 125 chapters. You can do the math, they're short.) I read the book in one sitting and now I have to go out and hunt up the first six in the series.

Despite a bump in the road with The 6th Target (Women's Murder Club), James Patterson has picked up the Women's Murder Club Series in 7th Heaven (The Women's Murder Club), and it looks like Lindsay is on the brink of yet another emotional dilemma. In this book, Michael Campion, who has a bad heart and happens to be the son of a former governor, disappears, but a tip comes in leading to a potential suspect. At the same time, a series of homes are set afire, robbed, and their occupants killed; these fires appear to be arson or accidental, but the detectives must follow a gruelling set of leads to discover the truth. Meanwhile, Lindsay Boxer continues to live with her FBI boyfriend, Joe, even though she has yet to say yes to his proposal from 6th Target.

***Spoiler Alert***

While this book has a much cleaner plot and the suspense is kept high for most of the book, I don't see the attraction Lindsay has to Rich Conklin, her partner. I know that Patterson is setting it up to be a love triangle with Lindsay caught between two men--her partner and her former FBI boyfriend--but I guess I am partial to Joe. I want to see her happy, and after cheering him on and happily applauding his decision to finally move to San Francisco and quite the FBI to be with Lindsay, I want my happy ending for them. I knew once Jacobi was moved up and no longer her partner, another hunk was moving into her life. I wonder if it is her desire for Conklin or her inability to commit that has her so confused about the men in her life. I gather its a bit of both.

This is one thing I have noticed about Patterson's crime stories--and it bugs me--the main characters who are detectives in police forces never can just have a happy home life. Wives die, marriages end in divorce, partners become lovers, and other activities happen that keep these detectives merely bouncing from bed to bed. I find that disturbing. I would like to see something out of the ordinary from one of his main characters; I would like to see them fall in love, get married, and have families all while remaining on the job and platonic with their partners.

As for the crimes, the Campion case takes a series of twists and turns that even had me baffled for a while, though I finally had it figured. I love the ending to this case, folks. If for nothing else, you should read this book to find out what really happens to Michael Campion. I have to say the conversation with Boxer, Conklin, and Campion's father was the biggest clue to the ending for me. It was a good point in the story to bring it out as well.

The rash of fires in the area among wealthy families was intriguing and the discovery of who Pidge and Hawk really are was captivating. The only question I have for those characters is what sick and twisted world do you live in that setting fires and killing people can be equated with 7th Heaven? Talk about a disturbing title for a graphic novel/manifesto of crime. It makes one wonder how these minds become that twisted to think hey let's set fire to homes, rob them, and kill the couples inside rather than sell this really detailed graphic novel that received rave reviews and become rich ourselves. I think in this instance, I would have preferred a bit more detail into how these criminals came to those conclusions. What motivated them to kill, rather than make money and change their lot in life? Then again, I suppose most cops and prosecutors never find that out even if the perps are arrested.

***End Spoiler Alert****

Also, keep a watchful eye on this book for the newest addition to the Women's Murder Club. The group is growing. Overall, this was an enjoyable, quick read that kept my interest throughout. While some parts angered me and there is still no resolution to the Joe, Lindsay, Conklin interactions, I would recommend this crime drama, 7th Heaven, as a must read part of the series, just skip over the 6th Target.

i've been a fan of mr patterson's for a long time but i couldn't appreciate 7th heaven. the plot was interesting but the execution could have been sharper. i enjoy the women's murder club books but the stories seem to be getting weaker compared to their previous tales. the ending was actually predictable which is the kiss of death for a mystery.

San Francisco Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends in the Women's Murder Club join up once again to help solve a case of arsons in a series of wealthy neighborhoods. Several innocent people are murdered and the only evidence left behind is a book with a latin inscription at each of the crime scenes.

At the same time, Lindsay is working on a case of a missing former governor's son. He was last seen entering the house of a known prostitute. A tip is discovered, but ultimately falls through leaving Lindsay, her partner Rich Conklin, and good friend and member of the Women's Murder Club, ADA Yuki Castellano desperately scrambling for more leads.

In true Patterson style, 7th Heaven is full of twists, turns, and surprises.

This a fast-moving and engrossing thriller. It is vintage Patterson and Paetro, and it is a fine addition to the Women's Murder Club Series. As usual, it grabs you on the first page and won't let go. You have the usual, short chapters (really scenes) that contribute to rapid development of the story. San Francisco Police Detective Sergeant Lindsay Boxer faces two cases. In the first, the son of the former Governor of California is missing, and a prostitute is suspected in his death. In the second, a pair of college students are talking their way into homes, robbing the owners, tying them up, and burning them to death by setting the house on fire. (It makes you think twice about answering a knock at your door, doesn't it?) Lindsay and her buddies solve the cases, but not without some startling twists in the story. I must note one other thing about the book. It reads smoothly. Recently, I have encountered books by other authors filled with distracting typos and bad grammar. In contrast, the writing in 7th Heaven is crisp and error-free. Thank you, James Patterson, Maxine Paetro, and the editors at Little Brown. For readers who like thrillers, this is a great one.
