123 NYC: A Counting Book of New York City

The fun adds up as New York is explored in this unique counting book and companion to the award- winning ABC NYC.

New York City comes to vibrant new life as children learn to count from one to twenty in this inventive follow-up to the IRA notable book ABC NYC. Using famous landmarks and exciting new places that readers will want to seek out when visiting, Joanne Dugan perfectly captures the concepts that come to children's minds as they roam the streets of the most exciting city in the world.

Including a comprehensive location list, 123 NYC inspires readers to look closely at the world around them and to see their own special landscape in a new way, all while celebrating the culturally diverse city of New York and all the children who inhabit it.

Praise for ABC NYC An International Reading Association Notable Book

“Dugan clearly shares a view of the city she loves, one that will hold the interest of children through repeated viewings . . . a delightful abecedarian . . .” —School Library Journal

“Where else does M stand for manhole cover?”—Time Out New York Kids

“Say Cheese, New York.”—The New York Times

123 NYC is lush; it makes for a perfect gift for any child with an interest in the city, in art or with an inquisitive nature. Keep your eyes peeled; some of these locations are pretty recognizable! If you are a Manhattan resident, it's always fun to try and find where each letter comes from. Highly recommended for children (of all ages).

You will be delighted by Joanne Dugan's 123, A Counting Book because
1) It is a fun way to teach little ones basic counting skills
2) Whether you are a New York native or just love to visit, you'll enjoy identifying the locations of the images (my favorite: the 12 clocks)
and
3) Dugan strikes just the right blend of tribute to the city and with wry humor (check out the shoes.)

You can count on this to be the perfect gift!

What a delightful approach to the world of numbers; our little boy loves to read through it with us, and now by himself. It's terrific, charming, and highly imaginative - and, also, a great idea for that kiddie birthday gift when you're wracking your brain for the kid that already has everything.

As an educator of preschool age children I am always looking for a new, fresh take on the basics. Joanne Dugan's books "123 NYC" and "ABC NYC" have wonderful, colorful pictures of things we see everyday. Although these books can be enjoyed by all children, I think children who live in New York City in particular can really relate to them. My students love both of Ms. Dugan's books and visit them over and over again.

123 NYC: A Counting Book of New York City

My kids LOVE this book! They love that everything in it is found in NYC (where we live) It is a fascinating collection of numbers to look at for adults. We try to guess where they all are in the city. I have given this book and its sister book (ABC NYC) many many times as gifts because they are so original and the kids ALWAYS love them! (Especially my out of town friends-it is a nice reminder of their trip here).

Joanne Dugan's beautiful photographs of New York City make her two children's books "123 NYC" and "ABC NYC" original and wonderful reading material for children of varying ages. For my 4 year old, the book is great for number and letter recognition and amusing photographs of things she can relate to. However, my older daughters, ages 9 and 11, love to page through these magical books guessing which parts of New York the photos come from and recognizing landmarks they are familiar with. I have bought these books on numerous occasions for presents as I have found them to be the perfect "New York City gift."

This colorful book makes learning numbers fun for children, and I enjoyed seeing my city from a new perspective. I find myself seeing things as I walk the streets of New York that I had never before noticed.

Ms. Dugan's work is timeless. Not only does she have a great eye for composition, the subject matter she chooses to illustrate the work is filled with wit. Any child would find the book both educational and entertaining.

(Hide Review...)  a clever, fun counting book

The premise of this book really is clever, there are photos of real numbers in New York City and commonplace New Yorky objects right beside them (I especially liked the picture of 3 kids eating black and white cookies) for your child to count. What makes it really cool though is the way the the photos make you see the world outside. After reading it (well more like sitting with my daughter while she did it) I kept looking at every number that we passed on the street in a totally different way.

I bought this colorful, educational book for my first grandchild....and it's great! Not only are the photographs unique to New York City, but all of them are identified at the end of the book. My plan is to take Olivia to "find" the numbers when she gets a little older!
