101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog

101 Dog Tricks is the largest trick book on the market and the only one presenting full-color photos of each trick and its training steps? The step-by-step approach, difficulty rating, and prerequisites, allow readers to start training immediately. Tips and trouble-shooting boxes cover common problems, while "build-on" ideas suggest more complicated tricks which build on each new skill. No special tools (such as clickers) or knowledge of specific training methods are required. Trick training is a great way to bond with your dog and help him integrate into your family. It keeps him mentally and physically challenged and helps to establish paths of communication between you. Many tricks build skills needed for common dog sports, dog dancing, and dog therapy work. It's every dog lover's privilege that Kyra and Chalcy took time from their performing schedule to share their secrets in 101 Dog Tricks.

This book has been great!! I am on my 2nd copy, as I gave the first one away to a friend who fell in love with it, and am planning on buying a 3rd copy to send to another friend.

This book is very easy to follow and a pleasure to page through. The photo's are fun, and make it a good pick for kids, who might not enjoy reading directions, as you can pretty much just follow the pictures. It includes hand signals and verbal cues, a lists of previous tricks to be mastered, and skill level. Whenever I run into a problem I go to the 'trouble shooting' section in the margin next to each trick, and it always has anticipated the snag and offers a helpful solution.

So far my chihuahua can sit, lay down, beg, shake hands, twirl, and roll over!! Not bad for a breed known for being yappy and being carted around like Cleopatra in handbags! I have had the book for about 5 months. We work all the tricks every night after her dinner. It's her 'school' and she loves it! I think she has become more confident since we started training. I know she feels very proud of herself when she does it right.

I highly recommend this book.

(Hide Review...)  wonderful for 1st time dog owner!!!
Reviewer Permalink
This is coming from the point of view of a first time dog owner. I had a dog when I was a kid, but this is my first to really be fully responsible for. I just got him a few months ago, he is 2 years old and a cattle / aussie herding type. I already taught him sit, stay, down, come, on my own but since he's smart I wanted to teach him more.

WOW he is going to learn everything in this book. The book offers great straight-forward techniques that really WORK. It's easy to pick out 2-4 tricks to work on at a time, as each trick has a dedicated page or 2-page spread.

In 3 days of having this book, my dog has already learned "shake hands" and "crawl", and he's on the way to knowing more including "jump over my leg", "bow" and "say your prayers". I would have had no idea how to train him to do these things but the real photos of the process for each command, as well as the real world common problems that happen with each command & tips to overcome them are fantastic.

I especially love that these tricks help continue to build the bond between me and my dog, as well as my role as his leader. He really seems to enjoy the training time and focuses in earnest. (Maybe it's the extra special treats that accompany the sessions :)

Kyra and her beautiful Weimaraner Chalcy take us step by step through teaching our furry children new tricks. Starting from the basic obedience trick training (sit, down, stay, etc), to more elaborate expert tricks like jumping rope. This book does a wonderful job of breaking down the teaching methods, positioning, hand cues, and trouble shooting. There's even prerequisites to different tricks. I recommend this book to all dog parents. It's a must have!!!

My dog and I have had literally hours of fun learning a lot of these tricks. The directions are straightforward, and the generalized training tips throughout the book are really useful. Tricks are much less "loaded" than traditional obedience, yet they reinforce good behavior and help strengthen the bond with your dog.

101 Dog Tricks gives easily understood instructions with one skill building on another to make intricate looking "tricks" relatively simple with wonderfully entertaining results.
A fun, attainable challenge for dog and human, and an inspiration to find that special relationship with your special dog.

(Hide Review...)  Not the best, nice pictures though
Reviewer Permalink
This is a great looking book, the pictures are lovely. Beyond that, I don't think it's a very good training book overall. The step by step instructions are often lacking clear details to teach the tricks and I find it depressing that the author advocates using physical corrections. For instance teaching shake, she recommends "bopping" the dog in the face if she sniffs your hand instead of pawing and to teach heel she recommends "popping" the collar if your dog strays out of line. They're just not necessary and even gentle corrections can destroy a softer dog's motivation so why include them? Presumably people getting this book want to have fun with their dogs.

There's also no mention of using a clicker as a reward marker which is just inefficient and I found it's exclusion from the book to be a gross oversight. It's baffling to ignore conditioned reinforcers in the face of the preponderance of evidence in their favor.

Though it is a pretty book, I don't recommend it as anything more than a picture book. It does have some good ideas but a better training book is "The Only Dog Tricks Book You'll Ever Need." I'm glad I bought both of them at the same time so I'm not stuck with this clunky book by itself.

I have a 2.5 yr old Pit Bull and was told by a lot of people that Pit Bulls are too stubborn to learn very many tricks. This book has helped me to prove them WRONG :) I love how every trick is explained step-by-step with colorful real-life pictures. I also enjoyed the education the book provided on how to better communicate with your dog and bond with them. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in having a fun time teaching their dog some new tricks and improving their relationship with their BEST FRIEND.

I bought this book after we got a doberman puppy. we have already taught him how to "shake". Of course now when you tell him to sit, he swats at you with his big paw trying to shake for a treat. He is very young to be taught most of these tricks, since his mind is still learning the basics. However, Chalcy and her trainer are amazing and very impressive. You will have to spend a lot of time working on these and a lot of the tricks are so hard. But some can be done. It is fun to see though, that a dog can actually be taught these crazy things. I think that the dog, a Weimeriener (forgive the spelling), I think is a very intelligent breed, as is a Doberman and a German Shepard. These type of dogs are very smart and eager to please. I reccommend the book for fun even if you can't get your dog to do the trick.

I have been training my dogs in agility for 5 years. Sometimes you get so focused on one area of training you forget the casual fun you can have with your dogs. The methods in this book are all positive motivational. There are lots of side bars that explain some of the pit falls you can run into when training. It wxplains how you can chain tricks together to create new tricks. I'm NOT planning ou teaching the dogs to fetch a soda from the fridge however. I just don't imagine my beagle passing the lunch meats. The only thing that this book doesn't provide is the time necessary to fit into my schedule.

Reviewer Permalink
My dog is 11 years old and I wanted to teach her tricks as a way to keep her mind alert as she ages, as well as provide an outlet for energy when there's bad weather outside.

I've been working from the book for 1 week and so far my dog (a chihuahua) has learned 2 new tricks. Author was right about using "good" treats to motivate to learn.

I chose this book in particular because the "look inside the book" feature showed a good, easy to read layout, detailed pictures that illustrates each step of the trick, and also some "troubleshooting" issues that you might encounter as you take your dog through the trick. Oh, afteryour dog masters a particular trick, the author tells you what additional tricks you can teach your dog to build upon the trick just learned....she really does a great job in this book and I would def. buy it for a gift, as well as purchase addtl training books written by her.

PS - I have no experience training dogs and have never been through obedience training; this book is more than fine for beginners. The book breaks down tricks by simple obedience tricks (sit, stay, down, etc.) as well as 3 addtl levels of tricks (intermediate, advanced, expert), so you know which tricks are at an appropriate level for your dog.

Have fun!

I'm not a new nor professional trainer, however, I have succeed taining my dog. The basic things that my dog can do are Sit, Stand, Stay, Bow, Beg, Play Dead, Roll Over, Bye-Bye, Kiss, Come, Fetch these are basic tricks that you can find on regular dog training book.

I love this book because they give you more creative things to play with your dog and very colorful and easy to understand with the picture demonstration. After all, It's a dog training book not intro to the rocket science...

Reviewer Permalink
This is a book I've been looking at purchasing for awhile, and finally made the plunge last month.

The book is exceptionally produced. The photos are excellent and the write ups are excellent too.

The book has also give me a few ideas also of tricks I can train my dog with also. SO that's been a plus.

I'm not sure I like how the book is organized though. It's organized by trick category and then within each category it goes from Easy to Hard trick listing. I guess this is something more of a personal preference.

I also would have liked to see a DVD accompany this book. If anything to at least cover the basic training approaches for the beginner tricks to get you started, since trick training is a very visual thing.

Lastly, I've been doing clicker training with my dog, and I was hoping that some of the book would address this new method of training too. It gives you about 1 paragraph at the beginning of the book but that's all.

I'd give the book 4.5 stars if I could but I can't so I'm marking it down to 4 out of 5 instead. Recommended.

I was considering buying this book...the list of tricks is wonderful and it appears to be well done. I read through the sample pages and, as a long time professional trainer, was disappointed to see SIT being taught with the old 'push on the hips, pull up on the collar' technique. For those of us trying to stay current in newer teaching techniques that is a bit of "the world is flat". Lest I throw out the whole book because of one outdated technique, can anyone give me a bit more info.
Thanks.

While this book may be a lot of fun, it is certainly not the only book to use step-by-step instructions and full-color photos. In fact, it's layout seems to have been designed on The Trick Is in the Training, long available from Barrons.
This book is longer, but it is NOT the first to use photos to illustrate the training, be full-color, and offer tips on solving problems and other ways to use behaviors.

There's a reason for the weimaraner on the cover: they learn exceptionally fast, however this book includes several other breeds. The photos and explanations are top notch minus a comment of poor taste which I wouldn't share with children or would intentionally overlook, change the page, ignore due to its content. Hands down, this is the best I've seen and the tricks are well organized, broken down into steps that are learnable. Don't leave the book near a puppy while you're not looking. Ours has been chewed a bit due to the frequency with which we refer to it! and it got left within reach of pup. It's a great coffee table book too, but then, if you're training your pup, and the tricks are endless, you'll never get bored--it's just a question of how much time do you have? your dog will be the show piece. Don't forget to charge admission.

Reviewer Permalink
I suggest buying 3 copies of this book... not 1...
First, because its a great coffee table book... hey, Chelcy (the author's dog) is a Weimeraner - - and both are very photogenic - - on top of it, the graphic design and lay-out of the book are not only sensitive and informative, but very visually appealing... You can feel the excitement and enthuisiasm

Second - - its a fantastic reference book... and the idea of thinking "tricks" instead of cut and dry obediance I think is great for both the trainer and the dog. Though most of the tricks do have elements of obediance to them, they are presented in a way that makes training your dog more fun and lightharded and you're not thinking, "good dog"/"bad dog"/"leash correction" - - In fact, I like the way the author not only has troubleshooting tips for each tricks, but will even give some ideas how difficult the trick is, what tricks need to be learned first, and how long it takes some dogs to learn. - - Also, all descriptions use simple, practical and effective language... The descriptions match up with the photos and the points are gotten across in a way that communicates the ideas to you and teaches you to teach them to your dog.

Finally... buy a third copy because... some dogs *cough* have tendencies to nibble on certain people's reading material, especially when allowed in the bed. (o.k. that's an obedience issue.)

As for the tricks, they range from basic sit/stay/rollover agility type tricks - - to classics like "bring me a beer"/"bring the newspaper" as well as a few parlor tricks/routines. The book also explains standard hand signals as well as commands.

Incidentally - - there I would like a refund for 2 of the tricks. One involves the human doing a handstand, the other a cratwheel... Trust me, if you're the "bring me my beer" trick type, you won't be doing those two...

All in all, this is one book that lives up to its own hype! Highly recommended!

This book so far has been great and was exactly what I was looking for in a trick book. I love how the whole book is in color with each trick broken down into easy steps. I have been trying out a new trick every couple of weeks and my dog (also a Weim) loves it! I am already considering buying this book for friends as a Christmas gift. You don't have to be a professional to use this book, however my dog has already completed Obedience school and I would probualy recommend some training before using the book since your dog needs to know when it time to "work" and can pay attention better after some training.

This is probably the most clear cut and useful book I have ever seen on dog training. I have 2 copies and am planning to buy a 3rd. I have one at home, in my travel trailer and will soon have one at work as well. I want to keep it at my finger tips. 101 Tricks stays away from tedious, clinical jargon that can make training overwhelming and boring. Yet, the training methods are always positive and humane. The real goal of the book is to strengthen the human/K9 bond, while your dog learns to learn and you both have fun. The trick training instructions require no previous experience. You and your dog can jump in and start working on the simpler tricks and build up. More experienced trainers will also enjoy teaching tricks. It is at the least a list of tricks that you may not ever think of teaching, but don't be deceived. You will find yourself feeling happy, joyous and loving your dog more as you see quick results from the step by step instructions Kyra and Chalcy share. I have even used this book in my classroom as a guide to teach my 5th and 6th grade students to set goals and list steps for acheving them. (I am hoping they will take some tips from it and work with their own dogs at home.)101 Dog Tricks is much more than directions for teaching tricks to your dog. It is a book, as the title says, for challenging, engaging and bonding with your dog. Can't wait for Kyra and Chalcy's next book!

My #1 complaint with dog training is it's so response-stimulus on BOTH ends...I always feel a bit like the Skinner box rat. That said, this book avoids a lot of operant conditioning and builds on our furry friends desire to please us just because they want to.

I have dogs of all sizes and so-called "intelligences" (please read the work of Harvard's H. Gardner to learn more of what I think about that sinister term!) and they're all SMARTER than I am...and I'm working on my MS degree! One thing's for sure they LOVE learning cool new tricks...and I love that I don't have to clicker or study the "contingencies of behavior" in order to have them play dead or walk a toy around the room.

I received this book as a Mother's Day gift from my sons. I train my dog for competition obedience and they thought I might like to have some "fun" things to train. The book is fantastic! There are lots of pictures and easy, step by step instructions for every trick! I love the way the tricks are categorized as being easy, intermediate, advanced and expert, there are tricks for dogs at every skill level. Also, for each trick the prerequisites are listed, some troubleshooting questions and answers and a small section called 'Build On It' that explains how you can build on, or improve, the featured trick! This book is a wonderful addition to my training library! You'll love it!

As a dog professional I have a large library of training books. This book has made it to the top of my list as one of the best! I have always encouraged owners to train tricks as a way to build the relationship they have with their dogs. This book has very easy to understand instructions as well as showing which tricks are easy or more advanced. The pictures show the enjoyment of both Kyra and Chalcy. I highly recommend this to all dog owners!!!
