Peggy and Pam were two desperately disorganized sisters. After analyzing their lives, they set up a rotating card system that scheduled their chores on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. with a combination of the sympathy of a fellow former slob, and the firm resolution of a for-your-own-good mother, they show readers how they too can get organized.

I initially bought this book 15 years ago and my home was so organized, even with three children. I bought it again recently because we downsized homes and everything was chaos. My home is in order again, and it isn't even difficult! Great plan!

I've read many books on organization (and hope to someday accomplish all I've read!), but this book will always be my favorite. Pam and Peggy have "been there." There's nothing worse than an organization or "decluttering" book that's written by someone who was born organized (or a "B.O." as Pam and Peggy would call them!). You have to have walked a mile (or waded through the clutter) in the shoes of someone who is easily sidetracked, organizationally-challenged, and wasn't born with the organization gene. Pam and Peggy make you feel like you've found a kindred spirit who somehow waded through all their stuff and found a better way! I wish they'd re-release their original kit that included a de-junking video and a few other goodies!

I have always been very organized until I had my second son. I am not sure what happened but I lost control of everything in my home. This book is quck and easy to read. The best part is you don't need any hard to find or expensive items to put this system to use. I can't say enough about this book. I even used it to organize my homeschooling lessons.

I may be guessing about the actual date I started with SHE but it transformed my life because every day I could finally get FINISHED with the housework! I was neat, but actually disorganized because I could never tell when enough was enough. Now I'm looking for this book again for my daughters in law who have asked me about my system. I no longer use the daily cards because the habits (don't pass it up, pick it up) have been engrained.
Having hit my 60's I am quite irritated that people act as though there is nothing to learn or know about making a house a home and running it so everyone can live there in their comfort. If you are looking for an efficient system that will give you more time to do what you want, start here and don't skip the process they recommend. I still can find anything in my storage boxes and my home is in order. Merry Christmas and start next year with a resolution you can keep! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-12 11:12:31 EST)

Wow! I thought this book was awesome. I read the first half of the book saying to myself "That's me!". Tripping over laundry and children's toys, not having anywhere to sit on the couches, both sinks full of dishes, etc.
The first part of the book is a hilarious look at the 'slob sisters' and how they came to look for a better way to keep house. The second part of the book explains exactly how to do that. Basically it's a system of index cards with a "chore" on it, you do them daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, yearly, whatever. You set those cards up in your box and do them every day. It really works. What I love about the book is the list in the back that actually lists example "chores". Things I would have never thought of doing... wipe light switches?.. (people do that?)...Clean the ceiling fan? (I just did it when dust started to fly off of it). This is a great book for anyone who can clean teir house but, has trouble KEEPING it clean. I used a copy of this book in 1984-5? Card system worked great. Loaned book to neighbor, moved to another state, taught school and retired. Needed some system to organize all those projects that waited for retirement that were not getting done. Ordered new copy and the system is working again for now.

This book fit me to a 'T'. How many times have you said, "This is it, we're finally going to have a clean and organized house", then this book is for you. I must say I wasn't prepared to actually have to make up a system. You have to buy different colored note cards, card dividers and a nice box that they'll fit nicely into. It's not really that big of a deal, I just wasn't expecting all that.
It's very helpful though. It keeps you organized on what needs to be done and when, to keep you on a schedule. Now I just got back from a weekend get away so I am not caught up, BUT I know I will get there. This system is very helpful. On top of it all, THIS BOOK IS HILLARIUS! I was crying sometimes I was laughing so hard. It's fun to read other people's messy house horror stories. Like the panic of the door bell ringing, do we answer it, or go out the basement door to meet them inside so they don't have to come in to see our pig sty. I highy recommend! These sister authors are hysterical and helpful. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-15 10:52:32 EST)

I have been a fan of Pam and Peggy for over 25 years. Their system really works. I decided to get back on board the organization train as a new empty nester and decided to buy the second book, even thought it has been out for over 10 years. I wish I had read this book first. The card system is streamlined and easier to set up and follow. Have fun reading this funny practical guide to getting back on track.

These ladies have such a wonderful way to look at life. I've been following them since they were on the Phil Donahue Show in their early years. They changed my life over the years to take control of a very closet "pigpen" person. I've watched them when they've added family members, their grand babies, to when they have lost family members, their Mother & Father, God rest their souls. These ladies always feel like they are real people.....not just a book person trying to earn some extra money. I've enjoyed watching them over the years and think of them as part of my "own" family.
Their few point has been so helpful in getting the junk out of my world. From getting a handle of my messy house to getting a handle of a messy relationship. If you are someone that is trying to get from out of the bottom of the pile.. this book is for you. Peggy & Pam have been a lifesaver through out my life. Saving lifes with Three by fives. I hope they don't mind that I post this for them. "Using humor, we are dedicated to helping people improve the quality of their homes. We know that the strength of the family has a profound effect upon the schools, the community, the workplace, the country and the world." God Bless you Peggy & Pam. Some good ideas, shows those who are overwhelmed how to tackle things one step at a time. I am not using the method-I found it too constraining and made my own system. It did give some advice that I was able to chage to suit my own system but over all I don't think there is much here. If you can get a used copy for a couple bucks go for it! Personally I think if someone has so much junk in their house they can not move they need to see a professional to find out why they are holding onto junk-there is something deeper going on and they need help.

Why I read this book: I got this book largely because of the title, because I work out of my home (and I fancy myself to be an executive!). However, in this book "home executive" refers to housewife... running a household. As a bachelor I could certainly use the help with that, so I read it anyway.
The strength of this book is it's home-spun style. Pam and Peggy are sisters, each of them tell their tales of woe... what it was like being disorganized slobs, and then tell how wonderful their lives are now that they have "the system." The way they unfold their story is very personal and funny. Kind of like Erma Bombeck. If you've had to run a household, particularly with kids involved, you will relate to them. They add to the personal nature of the book by including several pages of photos of them, them as kids, their kids, spouses, etc. The Book's Weakness: The book is 165 pages, and only one chapter of 25 pages is devoted to the actual "system." Although it may work great for them, for most of us disorganized types we read it and say, "What?" I need a lot more hand-holding, step-by-step instructions. It seemed that this was a book of their experience and then they did a drive-by when it came to helping us put into practice what they did. The guts of the book: Their system revolves around the use of 3x5 cards. I do like that part, because I have grown so weary of "lists," and have recently changed to index cards exclusively. Lists always need changed or rewritten. Cards can be "recycled" for future reminders, or thrown away if the task is done. And I'm just a more tangible, visible, feel-it type of person. Also, with lists, all I need to do is look at it once and I'm already feeling overwhelmed. I need to "see" one task at a time. In any case, the last thing I wanted to do after reading this book was to try and figure out and implement their particualar 3x5 system. Way too complicated with way too little instruction in how to really get it up and running, even though I've read several books on organizing, and have experimented with many "systems." I did pick up a few tips here and there that were helpful in my continuing quest for creating my own personal efficient and effective task, time, and information management system. The flavor of the book: As well as home-spun stories with glaringly real anecdotes of their daily life, the book is interspersed with poems, cartoons, and their philosophy on life and happiness. Evangelical Alert: The book is interspersed with occasional god-talk and spirituality, but loosely defined. On one page they quote Oral Roberts and Paramahansa Yogananda right after each other. In one chapter they discuss the effect that "getting their act together" had on their marriage. Peggy's went through some changes, but came out better. Pam ended up divorcing her "critical" husband. Quote from book: A disorganized person's Christmas prayer (p. 96) "O Lord, bless my desperate search for the twenty-five gifts I need to find in two hours. Let ther be cash somewhere I havent' looked, and let my bank card work one more time without an authorization call. Let there be just one more Polly Puberty Doll somewhere and let there be batteries included. Guide me to just the right store, and lead me to the correct sizes and colors. Let each selection be exactly what my loved ones had hoped and dreamed for. Keep me calm as I grope through crowds, scrounge through sale items, and dash up and down escalators. O Lord, forgive me for leaving this to the last minute again. If you'll get me through this one more time, I promise I'll get organized." (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-06 10:59:46 EST)

I just read this book and enjoyed it. It was entertaining, but somewhat outdated. The basis of their program is good. In fact, the detailed listing of household duties is helpful in putting together a personal program - using your computer. They did, later, insert some information about using your computer, but it is still outdated. I followed the recommendation someone else gave and purchased the book "Sink Reflections".

After thinking I was the only one using 3x5 cards to organize my daily tasks, someone said, "Oh, you must have read Side-Tracked Home Executive." It was their book (it's written by two sisters) that gave me the idea to color code my cards, and showed me how to work monthly chores into my system that went into my book workers@home making the most of your time.
This book is very funny and well worth reading! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-04 11:04:04 EST)

I am not in the target audience for this book. I started off with good habits and organization, and my life is relatively simple (e.g. no kids). The premise of the book seems dated, to me, and the humor 'way over the top. But between work, hobbies, and household I do make endless to-do lists that seem repetitious and accumulate guilt. So, I was interested in their file card system and read the book twice, really carefully.
Significant portions of the system don't seem to apply to me. For instance, 'pink cards (= personal activities and errands like going to the post office) will usually have a specific time associated with them'. I have no idea why they would; mine don't. There is occasional acknowledgement of work outside the home or home offices, but nothing actually helpful is said about how to incorporate that. (Ok there is an alternate weekly schedule given but it is not actually discussed or explained.) I suspect this would be addressed in the authors' newer system. Likewise, they occasionally mention the possibility of having paid household help, and how a basic level of organization is required before you can do that. But again they don't have any comments on how this would be incorporated. (Hint: if you want someone to mop/wipe/dust, you'd probably better put away stuff that's on the surfaces first. Make task cards for that, that match the help schedule!!) I'm still hoping that a stripped down version of the system will help me with some things, like, keeping track of how long I've procrastinated on an item, or not thinking about an item until it's the right time. I tend to frontload my schedule and then end up postponing the ickier items indefinitely. But I might just use categories for today, tomorrow, this week, this month, instead of each day of the month, month of the year, etc. At least, I'm starting with that. I'll still use my calendar for appointment-type stuff. And I will try to forget the authors' confessions and jokes (sorry). (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-04 11:04:04 EST)

When my kids were old enough to stay home alone during the summer months while my husband and I were at work, I looked for a way the kids would be productive and responsible. I didn't want them sleeping all day or getting into mischief. We put this system into works. The only rule was, the cards for that day had to be done before we got home from work. That meant the kids were responsibile for time management, as well. The system worked very well and we even expanded it to include meal preparations. I found out later that they would bribe each other with their chore cards!
On a personal note, I loved this book. The personal humor and success stories were enjoyable to read. This program works for me because I am not a morning person. I can't THINK in the morning. I can, however, do whatever is written on the cards, completing one job and moving on to the next. By the time all the chores are done, I'm awake and the rest of the day is mine! I bought the original S.L.O.B. Sisters Sidetracked Home Executives book that had the blue cover. I also bought their S.L.O.B. Sisters workbook and audio tapes they offered on QVC years ago. I'd like to say that I immediately became a former SLOB, but that's not the truth. Pam & Peggy's books and tapes helped, but in all honesty it took me a good 5 or 6 years of re-reading the book and listening to the tapes over and over and over again before it finally clicked. Their system is simple and it works - if you actually keep doing what they say to do. The system doesn't require any expensive tools - a plastic recipe box, white and colored 3x5 index cards, trash bags, boxes, and a timer. In no time you'll have your clutter eliminated, your house sparkling, and the weight of the world lifted off your shoulders.
I am happy to report that I am a recovering SLOB and I no longer even use the plastic recipe box and cards any more. I automatically pick things up and tidy up every single day, so the cleaning doesn't get away from me any longer. I remember those horrible days when I would stay up all night cleaning because someone was coming to visit. Heaven forbid anyone just drop by - I either didn't answer the door or made an excuse why I couldn't invite them in. I was so embarrassed by how cluttered and dirty my house was. I can still remember the first time that I was able to invite a friend inside who just happened to drop by without calling. It was so liberating! Now, I don't think twice about inviting drop by people in. Life is so much sweeter and less stressful now that my home is tidy and presentable all the time. I highly recommend Pam & Peggy's books. BTW, I still have my blue plastic recipe box and the 3x5 index cards just as a reminder. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-04-04 12:39:17 EST)

WARNING: This is a "work" book that can change your life! I first read this book sometime in the late 70's, attended a seminar, and put the "box" into action. I have since given it to daughters and daughters-in-law and friends. The plan takes some commitment and time to get started, but it works. When I have used--and adapted--the plan even through five major moves across oceans and continents, my professional life has been more productive, my husband is easier to live with, and--wonders of wonders--unannounced visitors are welcomed and enjoyed with no concern about the state of the house.

I found this book a good read. Pam and Peggy are humorous in their attempt to declutter. This book was not quite as good as Sink Reflections by Marla Cilley but it was the book that got Marla started as being the Flylady.

Though I must admit that I haven't put their system into action yet, even without it I received some useful tips that I have been able to implement. In addition, the humor in the book is like therapy to those of us mom's that can relate! It was an easy, humorous read, and certainly seems to be filled with promise. Very worth it for those looking for any help they can find in getting organized.

I just checked out this book at the library. I have been a FLYLady follower for over a year and her system did wonders for my home. I'm talking piles of dishes and no clean undies to spotless sink and no more laundry piles to dig through. BIG changes. Well, I decided to check this out just because of how highly FlyLady speaks of the Slob Sisters. Now I have a card file and just put the things that were in my Control Journal onto the 3x5s. I find things even simpler now and so motivating. This system works great and I really wish I had bought the book instead of having to return it. Pick up this and Sink Reflections and you'll be good to go!

After trying FlyLady twice, I realized that it would never work for me. Instead of having more time, I felt like I was always supposed to be doing a little here and a little there, but was never done. Being nagged by email only made it worse. And the final straw was the fact that FlyLady's "inspirational" messages were increasingly just annoyances -- either a reminder to purchase some product of hers, or a lot of Christian-oriented jargon. What I took from this system was: work in small segments, plan a day for each task, jump in wherever you are, and do a little, even if you don't finish the job. Since most of this was taken from the SHE sisters, I decided to investigate the SHE system. I found this system works better for me. Being able to move a card into the "done" section and seeing the pile of tasks that were left worked much better as a reminder for me than emails, which I often didn't get to read until well after they were due. And when the cards are gone, I'm done! As the daughter of a cleaning-impaired mother, I also appreciate the SHE system's instructions on what to clean and how often to clean it. The SHE sisters are not at all preachy, just "regular folks" trying to get their acts together and sharing a bit about themselves. It works for me.

This book changed my life.
I had tried FlyLady and loved the concept but just couldn't seem to stick with it. I decided to get Sidetracked Home Executives since that is what FlyLady based her system on. For me, S.H.E. worked much better. I realized that FlyLady is for those who are disorganized because they're paralyzed by perfection; S.H.E. is for those who are disorganized because they're too easily sidetracked and/or just plain lazy (like me). I have been using the cardfile system they recommend consistently for six months now -- and I didn't even fall behind when I had my second baby recently, which is the ultimate test of how well an organization system works. If, like me, you're chronically disorganized because you always have a million things going on at once but never manage to finish anything, this book could change your life! I bought Sidetracked Home Executives in 1981 and it was one of the best books I've ever bought. It eliminated the chaos in my home and my husband was never again frustrated when he came home. Pam and Peggy did such a wonderful job of telling funny and cute stories, you just wanted to be their best friend. It's been 22 years and I pulled it out today, for a refresher course! Great reading.

I'm a big fan of these "Slob Sisters" and even started a support group of local "SHE's," so I was really surprised to recently pick up a copy of "Get Your Act Together" (GYAT) and see how many things the Sisters changed their opinions/instructions on in the 15 years since they'd written the "Sidetracked Home Executives" book. I think the changes are good ones and I wish the original book copyright had not been updated and resold. I still like the first SHE book, I still think it offers great insights as to WHY we SHE's are so disorganized, etc., but The Get Your Act Together book really is a new and improved system compared to the first one.

I purchased this book as a companion to Sink Reflections by Marla Cilley, aka Flylady. Marla often references the Sidetracked Home Executive as the origin for her organizing system, and I was hopeful this book would solve some the mysteries behind the terms she uses such as "SHE" and "Born Organized." They definitely did, with quite a bit of humor and wit. A very enjoyable book. I probably won't use the card-file system (my control journal is already functioning quite well for this purpose), though will be able to use several of the tips in this book. Would recommend this book for other flybabies.

This is a great little gem to keep around 'in case of emergency'. Lots of great little tips that help with tasks all year round. When things start piling up, I always turn to this book for help.

I bought this book in 1981 and lent it to my sister-in-law who promptly lost it. When my daughter asked me for help to organize her housekeeping,I looked for this book.
I like this book because it is an easy organized system that kept me on track with daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly tasks. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:06:41 EST)

I loved this book. It has really helped me get more organized. We are still just at the start of initiating the system. My husband likes that he knows exactly what to do for the day. I also think men are so task oriented, that it works great in getting them to help more. Our house isn't in the order that I would like yet, but I feel we are on the right track and it will be soon. Thanks slob sisters!!!!!

I love a clean house, but I could never decide where to start, everything seemed to be dirty and I just got overwhelmed and then ended up doing nothing. My Aunt recommended this book to me years ago. I purchased it, made the cards and it worked very well. Occasionally I fall off the wagon, but I always get back on. We have recently moved into our first house and I am desperately trying to find my book so that I can get things (and keep them) clean. Without this book, I don't know what I would have done (or will do). I think that I am going to have to buy another copy or pick one up at the library because my new home is getting to the point that I can't stand it anymore. If you need help getting your life organized, this is the book for you.

I read this book 15 or so years ago and it changed my life. This card file system really worked for me. I don't like anything the Slob Sisters wrote after that, in relation to "the system".
In my opinion, they had it right the first time...so don't mess with it. However, the new system might work for some. Anyway, S.H.E is funny and informative. I found it very helpful in getting my life in order. I recently bought this book again because I lost the last copy when I moved. I am living in a much larger house now and I can't wait to get my cards written out and filed for this new house. Who would have thought I would be excited to get started on a new cleaning program. Strange, but I really look forward to making out and filing my cards. Then it's very satisfying to do a card and file it in its next place. :) True, it does take a while to get all the cards written out, but once you do, everything goes very smoothly. I know that there are many other books and programs out there. There are some that work for some and not others. This one has always worked for me. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:06:32 EST)

A get organized book with a sense of humour??! That is what I loved about this book that Pam and Peggy put together. True Pigpen livers and speaking from experience, they really have a way of getting us to not take our situation so seriously and to realize it is entirely possible to create a life of meaning and organization. They do have their own system using file cards to help organize how and when things will be done, but even if you choose not to use the system, I am telling you the book is still awesome! I read the whole book, but still keep referring back to it because it is so motivational, and I got the items I need to start my file system, so I am on my way!!

When I gave birth to my last child, I was going home with the little bundle of joy in my arms with 23 month old twins waiting on me. Also a nine year old and two step children who were at my house a lot...ages five and ten. (I am talking six children in all under the age of ll). As my husband drove me up the lane to our house I cried. He said, "Are you glad to be home dear". I couldn't talk, but if I could have I would have said..."I don't know how I am going to do this".
I have a real problem with distraction. My house was a mess. Three children under the age of 2. Three in diapers. I didn't have my own washer or dryer nor a dishwasher. Couldn't get all the food hot at once because of interruptions. Kept running out of staples.. Then my sister heard about this book on the today show. I took it very seriously. It took me two weeks to read and compile all the cards. I sat in each room of my house and listed slowly and methodically every single chore I wanted to "ideally" do. Finally after much mental fatigue and work, my card file system was ready. Drum roll please............. From that day on my house ran like a well oiled machine. Christmas cards and gifts on time, physicals for school scheduled early, grocery shopping done according to menus and everything in order. People often asked me how I did it. I showed up for things on time when parents with only one child couldn't make it. Since that day I have probably given six of these books away to interested parties. Many people don't actually do the book, they just read it....doesn't help. But if you want a real solution to chaos...you can't beat this book. To this day I use this system. I am no longer as disorganized as I was when my children were little, but I still find it keeps me on track. I have also used it in several jobs I have had, setting offices up on the rotating memory tickler system. If you have a real need for organization, use this book step by step and you will marvel at the results. Also, in reading one reviewer, I noticed someone saying that you could get caught up in overload by trying to be to perfect. I did not find that a problem at all. I instead found that I had more time and could actually schedule time off with time to go to the park etc. with my children. It is so much nicer to take time off when you understand that you have a plan that allows for down time and still keeps you in control. The secret to this book is actually doing it!! If you invest the time and do the upfront work of setting the system up, you will be amazed. Rhonda Beaman (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:06:33 EST)

My mom, a chronic messy, started using this system when I was in high school. We went from living in a four bedroom house in the midwest to a two bedroom condo in California. She also started working full time outside the home. So my sister and I were the ones who really used this system. It worked really great. After school we would just pull out the cards for that day and deal them out. They just had to be done by the time they got home from work. Let me tell ya it was the only way we lived in that condo without killing each other.
Now that I'm a stay at home mom of three and my mom has nobody at home making a mess, I "borrowed" her cards written in her own hand. Though sometimes it feels like she telling me to clean my house. I highly reccomend this system for families with children. You just deal out the cards. No nagging or constant reminding. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:06:33 EST)

This book was a very good resource for me. I was having trouble getting my act together regarding my household duties. I, however, used sheets of papers instead of 3X5 cards. I have a list for Daily, Weekly, and Monthly duties instead of the cards. I found the cards a bit overwhelming but the paper lists worked great. Love the book.

A must read for the creative, lovely person who really wishes her home could reflect all she is- instead of constantly reminding her of what she isn't (born organized!)
This book and program turns what used to be drudgery into meaningful activity- and you'll find more results from your efforts than ever before. If you really want to "fly" a combination of Pam and Peggy and Marla Cilly (Flylady) has helped me a great deal. Marla keeps it simple- and is a constant encouragement- Pam and Peggy fill in the details and add the humor. If you're born organized, this plan may be a frustration, but if you were not (you know it!) It may just provide the structure you need to succeed! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:06:33 EST)

For women out there that get so overwhelmed & frustrated with trying to clean their homes....Please, please, please try FlyLady.net. She is the poster child from the aucthors of tis book who also wrote Sink Reflections. Now I am an avid reader & have yet to read either books because I have access to reading the website Now instead of waiting for a book & you know what? I am so much happier with my home. The website will teach you how to start a routine & that you can clean anytihng in 15 minutes. It Does Not have to be perfect! Do you hear that?! It just has to be done & later you will learn that you don't have to stress clean. You can complain, procrastinate, judge, blame it on the fact that I may be some hyper PTA mom who preaches crazy but it will change your cleaning habits & your families life. I'm not that hyper, I don't quite like the PTA, & I'm an overall better person because I'm happy with my home. Don't disregard what I'm trying to relay. Just try it.

But I didn't. I love the beginning description of her good intentions gone awry, and having the home in upheaval when her husband's boss came over.
Give this book a chance. Try the steps suggested by Pam and Peggy. I never EVER would have imagined I could have a home that was clean UNDER the furniture! When I got this book, I was struggling to keep the large chunks in check, and the laundry monster was threatening to overwhelm our home. God bless Pam and Peggy, who UNDERSTAND that we hate housework, and we aren't any good at it. I feel I finally understand the key to working/family/organization. This book was introduced to me by a friend who, like me, had NO time to keep a house clean, but found a way using this book. I hve been using the 3x5 method for about 6 months now. My house isn't immaculate, by any means, but it is a lot better and a lot easier to maintain. It is really easy to file the cards away without actually doing the job...and that is my vice right now, but it is also easy to do the jobs once you've broken them down a bit. It takes a lot of effort, but it is worth reading and trying. If it doesn't work for you.. try FlyLady.net. They use the same basic system of S.H.E., but it is a lot easier to keep at!
