(Hide Review...)  Fourteen years later I am still using the ideas in this book!
Reviewer Permalink
I first found this book at the library when my daughter was four and now she is eighteen! At that time, I had her and my baby boy keeping me running in circles. I just could not keep up with the messes, toys, laundry, etc. Deniece's book broke it down for me and helped me to tackle each element that seemed out of control. But all those "tips and tricks" are not really what stayed with me. I do continue to refer back to my book (I returned the library's copy and bought my own!) for those kinds of helps occasionally, but what has really stayed with me are the Basic Organizing Principles presented in Chapter Two.
They are:
1. Think before you act
2. Discard and sort
3. Group
4. Be motion minded
5. Practice preventive maintenace
6. Use your accrued benefits

Those principles can be applied to every situation in your life and I still find myself relying on them to be efficient at home and at work. I think the book is worth the price just to get familiar with those principles.

The other part of the book that continues to be helpful to me fourteen years after my first read, is the Personal Planning Notebook. Rather than use an expensive pre-packaged system with sections and categories that are not relevant to you, you buy a 5" x 8" binder and Deniece shows you how to set it up in a way that is completely useful and relevant. I have my monthly calendar pages that act as an "index" or "overview" of the month and those help me to organize my daily pages in such a way that I actually get things done!

Not every section in this book is going to be relevant to every reader, but there is plenty here to choose from. I admit that at times Deniece's prose comes across as a little Donna Reed-like, but I forgive her because she is sensible and she knows what she is talking about! She is also the first to say that you need to fit the tips, plans, and advice to fit YOUR life. It is not a cookie cutter approach, but rather an expert's wisdom which you are free to put to use in the way that best suits your life.

I have read and tried the Sidetracked Home Executives and FlyLady, but this is really my bedrock system when it comes to meeting all the "have to's" in my life so I can get to the fun "want to's"!

This is a really great book on organizing. The ideas are practical and doable. I like the puzzle idea of numbering the pieces, though I only used it for those puzzles we planned on doing more than once. With kids, there usually are a few of those. I found the lay-out of the book easy to follow, and the author's tone to be helpful and not demeaning like some "let me be tough" with you tones in other books. All in all it is a very good book and one that I used often when my sons were younger. Looking around my house, I would have to say I am due to read it again.

As a professional organizer, I have read quite a few books on organizing. This book was very light and easy to read, which I liked. In addition, it has practical ideas for using inexpensive (and sometimes free) storage containers. Many people are on a tight budget, but with the suggestions made in this book, you can find the products inexpensively and at your convenience.

If you don't want to read this book cover-to-cover, there is an index in the back that can be used to find solutions to a problem area you want to tackle.

I'd recommend this book as a resource for tackling each room in your home.

I was a 28 year old working woman who was overwhelmed with my domestic responsiblites and drowning in a sea of mess, clutter and chaos. Thanks to "Confessions of an Organized Homemaker" now my home is well put together and neat. No longer do I stress out over grocery shopping, laundry, and planning meals. I was a constant last minute person, doing the laundry when I was down to the last towel, grocery shopping only after I had exhaused all meal possibilites it was terrible. I even served chicken thighs on hamburger bun havles with gravy on top! Thanks to Deniece Schofield I have my life back. She covers everything from finding storage spots to creating your own grocery lists where the items are grouped together by catergories. She lets the reader apply what works and leave what doesn't. This book is perfect for newlyweds and young people who have moved out of the house. Buy it and you'll see what I'm taking about!

Each chapter naturally leads into the next, so the writing flow is smooth, but what sets this book apart from others of its kind is the sheer volume of ideas. The author doesn't provide a one-size-fits-all mentality and allows the reader to draw his/her own conclusion(s) and adapt to his/her own environment. More pictures would have been nice.

I really enjoyed this book. The ideas aren't necessarily original compared to other household organizing books, but it was more enjoyable to read than most. I enjoyed the author's anecdotes and personal remarks throughout. It made it more fun to read something that was already full of good advice. I'd love a new and updated version that brings us more up to date with the technology that is omnipresent today, but even though this is dated, it doesn't feel that way. Instead I'd call it "timeless". I will keep this and enjoy reading it and referring to certain sections over and over again. A great household resource.

I own this book for several years now, and reading it really help me to get more organized. I reorganized my kitchen and I love it this way - cooking and backing became more fun. The chapter about how to organize the kids room was very helpful, as with three kids inevitably a lot of toys/puzzles/lego pieces are accumulated - and - by the way - that's exactly how I store kids puzzles, and yes, kids DO the puzzles more then once! Thank you, Deniece, for sharing your ideas with us!

Reviewer Permalink
I had always been very organized at work. As a accountant I had no choice. I had to be able to respond to federal inquiries or IRS audits quickly. My home was another story completely. To be honest, my home was a disaster. I just didn't treat my home like my career. This book taught me to use the same strategies I employed at work to my home. Darned if they didn't work like a charm.

Why didn't I think of using a PDA or daytimer at home? Heck if I know, but now that I do I can't imagine how I functioned without one. Having a running list of items that I need from the grocery store, hardware store, pet store, warehouse club is indispensable. Yet for some reason I used to expect myself to remember what I needed when I happened to be near a store. No wonder my life was in chaos.

I have read this book at least 3 times now and I pick up more tips each time I use it. If your home is in chaos, or you waste time looking for things because you can't remember where you put them consider purchasing this book. I highly recommend this book. It really helped me to change 15 years of bad habits almost overnight.

I skimmed through the pages and found a description by the author of how to keep track of large jigsaw puzzles (paraphrased here): Put the puzzle together, then flip it over and number each piece. Then store it in a large Ziploc, along with a photo cut out from the box. Then cut out a small photo from the box and put it in a three-ring binder....etc.
First of all, who does a large puzzle more than once? And how awkward is it to store a puzzle in a bag? And how does one pick up a large puzzle? This is not a useful book in my opinion!

...and I own a LOT of them! I have owned this book for many years, and it is the one I turn to time and again when I feel like de-cluttering and re-organizing.

Her chapter where she describes making a household notebook changed my life forever -- for years now, a New Year's ritual is for me to get a new notebook with pretty new dividers and fresh paper, to begin the year with a clean slate. My household notebook is our family lifeline -- I use just about every suggestion she has, and it turned me from a constant "scratch note" person, to one who can find information in about 2 seconds flat, b/c I put EVERY bit of info in my notebook.

I can't say enough about this one -- my copy is stained and dogeared, but I will always keep it and refer to it!

(Hide Review...)  Writer and content can sound nutty but it's actually good
Reviewer Permalink
Despite the author's protestations to the contrary, she does come across as an extremely [...] person but that doesn't detract from the good ideas in the book and there are many. When it comes to the process of organizing, decluttering and storage, nothing is better or as indispensible as Julie Morgenstern's book, Organizing from the Inside Out, but this book is a good second book to have on the topic. This is really more of an "idea" book with lots of different ideas of ways of doing thing. The sheer quantity of ideas is enough for you to either find something that would work for you or to get you started coming up with your own. It really is a very systematic system for organizing and storing your stuff and presents you with some general principles that can guide your own efforts or just get you steered in the right direction, especially if you're new to this and really don't have an idea of where or how to begin. I lent the book to a friend whose house is fairly well organized and she thought the book was completely nutty or obvious. But what may have been obvious to someone who is already organized, was useful for me. And chances are someone who isn't organized or doesn't need help in storage and decluttering, probably won't be shopping for a book like this anyway. So if you already have Organizing from the Inside Out and are looking for a few more tips to supplement that book (although that book can stand on its own, unlike this book and most other decluttering/storage/organization books, where not one of them is sufficient to really help you turn things around the way you want them to be and to maintain a system that works for you), then this is a good choice. (Be forewarned though, some of this book can sound so rigid and extreme that it can be easy to simply dismiss the contents outright and thereby miss out on some excellent ideas.)

by the price, the look, the description, and most of all by the advertisements listed on the cover and elsewhere for numerous ~1001 hints~ types of books that this would be a waste of money. time to rack another one up as a learning experience.

this book can be summed up in a few words, and many less pages than the 212 you would end up paying for: kitty litter trays, dishpans in "designer" colors, ice cube bins, drawer dividers, cup hooks, shelving units made of boards'n'bricks, and a calendar-style planner.

ponder deeply the implications of using those items in your life, and save the $10.00 you would have spent to learn "the secrets of uncluttering your home" from this book. it may sound as if i'm spoiling the ending for you, but as far as i can tell none of those items has been a secret for the last half-a-century.

I've had this book for several years (probably about 5) and it has served me quite well. Although there are very few 'new' ideas for organizing the home, this book is an excellent reminder of everything I know but keep forgetting about.

I enjoy the tone of this book and go back to it everytime I feel like things are getting a little disorganized and I need to remember how to get them back under control.

I would definately suggest this book to friends.

P.S. Her system for organzing bills has worked so well for me that I started it the first time I read the book and have used it unfailingly every month for the last 5 years...I never stick with anything that long unless it's really good.

(Hide Review...)  Why didn't I get "Organizing Plain and Simple"?
Reviewer Permalink
Deneice could have cut the size of this book in half, but she likes to give twenty examples for each scenario. Yes, I understood the running list idea. The first example clarified it further. The sixteenth, however is boring.

Most of her writing is directed toward families with children, so DINKS and singles can skip this book. I wish I would have. Why didn't I buy "Organizing Plain and Simple"? Also, either she has a 1950s mentality or this book hasn't been updated since it was published in 1952, er I mean 1982. Ever heard of a computer, Deniece?

And one more thing ... saving up to buy a trash can for a son's room? Look, if you can't afford to buy a trash can for little Timmy's room, you have failed miserably as a person and should not even have children.

This book was a terrific read and an excellent starter book for one, like me, who has great motivation, intentions, and energy, but just can't seem to get it all together. As opposed to several other books I've read on the same topic, this book had many practical ideas that I was able put to use immediately without spending a fortune on organizers. I love the theme and it has become my mantra: spend five minutes doing it DAILY and you'll never have to spend hours at it again, whether it's clutter, laundry, junk drawers, whatever. Very motivating and practical. Highly recommended by a former slob!

I thought from reading the other people's opinions, that this book would have great, new ideas. What a disappointment. Most of the ideas are repeated from other, much older books. Okay, I suffer from a severe case of NDD (Neatness Deficit Disorder) and this book was a lifesaver for me. It has simple ideas (of the 'why didn't I think of that' kind) and they are easy to implement. Having workcenters is absolute commonsense and makes a huge difference to my kitchen.
Placing my kid's books in plastic bins worked wonders until they were old enough to sort them onto their bookshelves and the toy storage ideas were great - although I can't bring myself to get rid of all those jigsaw boxes yet.
If your house is anything like mine was, definitely, definitely give this book a go!

Reviewer Permalink
While this book ostensibly seeks to help today's woman organize a smoothly running home, the author's particular slant brought to mind the Stepford wives. Declarations such as "Whenever I open a cupboard it seems to say,'You are in control here You're doing such a good job!' What a boost for my self image." had me wondering whether this book was written in the 1950's, not 1994 as the publisher states! Another example that had me flashing back to images of June Cleaver comes a few pages later when the author is discussing recipe storage. "Maybe that new brownie recipe is better than the one you're using now," she cautions. "After all, we can't make second rate brownies, can we? They have to be the best. There's a little one-upmanship in all of us when it comes to baking." Gag me with a (wooden) spoon!

I bought this book looking for some help in streamling my housekeeping and kitchen organization--yet I found that with her excessive calendaring and list making recommendations the author is trying to make relatively simple tasks more complex than they need to be! Furthermore, her particular philosophical slant with references to eliminating covetous behavior and seeking brownie baking perfection were offensive to me as a modern, feminist, stay-at-home mom who feels that housekeeping is a part of life, not my whole life!

I didn't finish reading the book; I stopped at page 2. In this page, the author talked about how one could learn to like doing house cleaning by saying that "So, you spend most of your life studying rapid eye movement or maybe you specialize in Asian drug smugglers." As an Asian I felt deeply offended. My house may be messy, but it's far better than having racist material as such lying around. I will return the book.

Wonderful. This book was what encouraged me to begin my quest of organizing my life. This book covers all aspects of organizing your life- organizing time, cooking and meal planning, cleaning house, etc. Although it covers just about every part of a home, it is not overwhelming.

If you are interested in organizing your home and want a starter book, I would suggest you consider this book. In this book she discusses the whys, how tos, and what fors of organizing every aspect of your life.

If you are already on the road to organizing and want a book that will give you cheap and easy hints and solutions to storage, I would put forth that Confessions of a Happily Organized Family is more about the how to of organizing. She provides a wealth of suggestions for storage and organizing solutions that are not very expensive and easy to make and/or buy.

Either way, both are good. Both are full of ideas. And for me, most importantly, both are encouragine and realistic.

This book did give me lots of ideas on organizing and different ways to clean things. But her books have checklists on things like cleaning cords (phone, appliance, etc.) and dusting plant leaves, along with special sponges for cleaning the inside of washing machines. Frankly, I don't have the time or the inclination to worry about this stuff. With an active toddler, an extended family, and two jobs, I worry about whether my house is neat enough to have people over, or making sure there's food in the fridge and clean clothes in the drawer. She's got some great ideas, but she spends too much time on minutiae to really keep my attention. Her books are best suited to those who consider cleaning an art form and a way of life -- not just something to help you keep your sanity!

It has taken a while, almost 6 months, but I am THRILLED with the results our family has gotten with the 4-bucket approach to housekeeping. [Can't remember the term used in the book, but you get the drift.] Two years ago we married (and you know how much stuff you get) and last year we had a baby (and you know how much MORE stuff you get) and we kept saying "bigger house" since we've lived in a 800 sq ft 2 br 1 bath for 6 yrs (and hubby is a SERIOUS pack rat, for example still has/had Safeway flyers from 1994) but given the real estate market in our area (SF Bay Area #1 most expensive yr 2000) we aren't going anywhere soon. SO. I started with the hall closet. Then our closet. Then baby's closet. Then living room. Then kitchen drawer. All good practice and "safe" for my hubby. THEN. We tackled the shed together. And finally the Attic and (you'll hardly believe this one) the Garage!! We are still very "cozy" with some 50 plastic buckets in the attic... But we are much happier and able to live where we are until we find a bigger home. And THEN we can put in closet shelving ... Oh I can't WAIT!

One thing that really helped me was the chapter on throwing stuff away. I never realized that I had such pack-rat like tendencies till I read this book. I am now a firm believer in throwing stuff away [or recycling it, giving it to charity, etc] and our home is so much more uncluttered and nice to live in.

She has so many great ideas in this book that it would be impossible to list all the ways I've been helped by it. She does have some ideas that didn't work for me [I spent a long time trying to organize my recipes and shopping like she suggested, but it just didn't work for me], but they might work for others. I found this a great book to use on a "take what works, leave what doesn't" basis. I think our lives have been improved as a family because I read this book and used many of her ideas and suggestions. I highly recommend it to anyone - but especially to young families!

I liked most of this book. I haven't put it into action yet (because the cost is prohibitive), but I plan to use several of the author's suggestions. It is obvious that the author is not a pack rat like I am though. Some of the things that I didn't like about the book are: monthly planners are expensive, so I haven't gotten one yet, the author suggests that you buy too many containers (for dry food, toys, books, etc.) You would spend a fortune buying all of the dish pans and plastic containers that she suggests. I haven't found a utility cart yet, but I'm sure they are not cheap. The author also suggests making shelves out of concrete blocks and boards to store toys on. This seems dangerous to me. Small children are suprisingly strong and also like to climb.

I did purchase a few containers at a local thrift store. I really like having a container for my chili seasoning, ranch dip, and taco seasoning packets. One would be great for Kool-Aid if you use it. I also like having one for all of the stuff like cupcake liners, birthday candles, toothpicks, etc. that are small and not packaged in stackable containers. I plan to get another one for medicines. I have also tried to apply the idea of keeping all of my most frequently used items on the lower, more convenient shelves and placing less used items on the highest shelves. I used to hate making brownies because I had so many plastic Tupperware/rubbermaid containers stacked in my brownie pan. It was an avalanche everytime I tried to get it out of the cabinet. Duh! So now I have one smaller pan sitting in the brownie pan and it is so much easier.

I also like that the author shares what didn't work for her, like a toy box. My son is 7 months old and I was just thinking that I needed to get one of these. However, as he collects more toys, I don't like the idea of having to separate them into 30 different containers to put on shelves either. I'm not sure what the solution is for that.

I think most people could get some great ideas out of this book, so even if it only helps a little, it's better than you were before.

I felt unsatisfied with my life but I knew staying home with my four daughters (ages 9mos, 3, 5, 8)is what I wanted more than anything. After reading just a few chapters of this book, I felt renewed and ready to take on my "new" life. I have much less stress in my days and the children and my husband seem happier (because I am happier). Meals are planned, laundry stays caught up, the house is tidy, and I have much more free time on my hands to do fun things with my girls. I really am greatful that I picked up this wonderful book at the library, now I am going to purchase it for my home library! Awesome book!

Several years ago I went out and bought five books on how to organize my life; then I organized my life (pretty much). This was one of the best, and now that I have 3 kids (I think we had only 1 when I first found "Confessions") I'm going to read it again. I especially enjoyed Schofield's tone. As I recall she had a zillion children of her own (6? 7? something like that?) and reading the book was a bit like reading the old Jean Kerr books back in the early 60s. Retro and fun.

You can't wait to get started uncluttering your house and getting things put into place. I had already used a planner but this book gave me tips to make it more invaluable. I combined her tips with my once a month cooking and now I have an abundance of time to do the things which really matter most to me. A definate plus to any home library.

I have been digesting this book chapter by chapter. It has such great ideas and also helped me realize I wasn't in that bad shape either. From keeping a detailed calendar to organzing my dishwasher (if you can imagine) has made me, my husband and my household a happier place. I would recommend this to ANYONE setting up a new house hold, having childern or who works full time and is exhausted!

I am planning on quitting my job and coming home (again) to care for my three children, and I had serious reservations about taking this step (even though I know it's what I want to do) until I read this book! Last time I was home full-time with my kids I was overwhelmed and depressed most of the time. Now I know why! Deniece's book helped me realize how being organized, making lists, and treating homemaking responsibilities professionally will help me. I have already instituted most of what she recommends, and I can already tell a difference in my mental state. Now I will really be able to focus on my kids, and little setbacks (like spilled milk) won't ruin my day. Plus, it's great to have a little free time in the evenings for myself. I really enjoyed this book. I read it from cover to cover, although it could be read in bits and pieces, starting wherever you feel you need the most help.

This book is so motivational. I come from a long line of keepers, but feel I am on the road to recovery. I have been through my entire house with the help of this wonderful book and made vast improvements. I no longer feel guilty about tossing the things that only have sentimental value and are other wise useless. Like the Author says,"Keep the love and get rid of the symbol". I was literally becoming depressed with the state of my house and unable to tackle it. She gives you the tools and knowledge you need to approach it without being overwhelmed. I feel so much better about my home and possessions. The key is everything has to have a well-defined place so that everyone knows where it belongs. And you need to go though things periodically and not let it get out of hand. Her storage tips are so wonderful and organizing is very important. I am so grateful for the help this book provides. I am giving this book as gifts to family and friends. Nancy Ansel

How much time must we really spend on these details? You can eliminated the need for some of this author's beloved organizing-of mail, toys, and clothes, for example-with a book called Ergonomic Living which provides a fascinating new approach to the home and office. I bought both books.

I bought this book by mistake (from Amazon) and what a great mistake!! I have read this book starting with the chapters I needed most and then started at the beginning! What this women does with a ziplock baggy is great! Be sure to go out and buy baggies and drawer dividers before you start reading. The only time I have to read is late at night after the family is asleep. I wanted to start right away while I was motivated. The planner section is useful; I am implementing many of her ideas for the new year.

Enjoy starting January ORGANIZED!

This book is a lifesaver for anybody with children. When I bought this book, I just had my first baby. Lack of organization has thrown our household back with tons of chores piling up every week. This book has given me a lot of good ideas about the way to run a house smoothly. The best thing about it - you do not have to do it all in one day. The author stresses out that you can do it bit by bit and you will eventually get to a clean well-organised home.

The most valuable thing for me was the idea of a monthly planner. It does not matter if you are a busy professional or a housewife. To catch the bull by the horns you ought to have one.

One more thing, after reading the book you will understand that there no picture-perfect homes (of course, if somebody lives there). If your house is, and you are a clean-it-all slave of it, read this book. It will help you ease your cleaning passion and start enjoying life instead.

I am planning to stock up on a few copies of the book. Next time I am invited to a wedding, I will have an exellent addition to a present.

Schools should use this as a text book for teaching "life & survival skills." I started with the kitchen. I discovered that if the kitchen is organized, the rest will follow suit. The organization tips are plentiful and easy to implement. I have given this book as a gift to several people. They have all been thrilled with it.

Deniece has all the right answers to our organiation problems. After reading her books I was encouraged to go home and uncover all the hidden areas in our home where I could use for getting organized. She has so many practical ideas that it will help everyone get a handle on everything in their home and office as well. She had to hit rock bottom before she decided to try different methods and she is willing to share her wealth of ideas. I recommend that everyone read her books.. I only hope that everyone who reads her books will get as much from them as I have.
