Melonie Griffen's excellent book about the Muslim threat to traditional British values should be required reading for all English speaking people. The facts in her well-researched thesis convinced this 88-year-old reader that radical Muslims are well advanced in their plan to create a Muslim world. Londonistan should be required reading for all American High School Seniors.

The cult of death called Islam is spreading like the plague across the globe and only because it is allowed by the myopic, historically ignorant, illogical, naive and morally rudderless Western civilization. This book attempts to wake up the dozing Westerners who are more obsessed with saving the whales, trees, caribou and spotted owls while ignoring the danger growing right under their very noses. Westerners who are more concerned about multiculturalism and political correctness, and not offending anyone than with real nighmare sneaking in diguised as exotic "religion of peace".

I stopped reading this book in the middle because it becomes just another piece of pro-Israel propaganda.

She would be this author, who is well informed on this very important topic and, when simply presenting the facts, makes her case rather well. However, the facts are often overshadowed by the author's own prejudice and hyperreligiosity. President Bush said that the terrorists hate us because of our freedom; Ms.Phillip's solution seems to be to demolish those very freedoms and to capitulate to those very people whom she claims to be fighting against.Like many (if not most) of the neoCon authors on this topic, the solution that she presents for saving the West from the Muslim threat is simple: it's us or them, choose your theocracy. She shows how the Muslim extremists hate the West for its feminism, gay rights, freedom of speech, lifestyle, sexuality, and religion, and she agrees WITH the Muslim extremists! It's unbelievable. In her (and the neoCon establishment) mind, if the West would just go back to its lovely Victorian mentality the Muslims would see that the West has values and would leave us alone. Sorry, Mel, the Victorian era was not the happy time of corsets, bowler hats, and perfect morality that she seems to believe. Freedom was almost nonexistent, especially for women of all classes, nonAnglos, nonProtestants (including Catholics), and the working classes. The number of children who were sold into the brothels to be abused by "respectable" men should make that point clear enough. Also, the cat is out of the bag: women don't want to be forced into the kitchens to clean and have unwanted babies, gays will not go quietly back to the closet, and atheists, Jews, and freethinkers will not live in silence with their heads down for the Borg, I mean majority. Plus the Muslim fundies don't care if Europe goes back to a Christian orthodoxy. They believe that Christians and secularists are equally damned. What is the solution? Better immigration policies (how about opening Europe to North Americans who would love to live there? It worked for Johnny Depp), developing a backbone when dealing with extremists of ALL types, and standing for, not against, human rights and individual freedoms. If you want to read a good book on this topic that doesn't push our own surrender into theocracy as the only way; read "While Europe Slept". It's not perfect, but it is much more religiously open minded and less bigoted than this one. Once again, I acknowledge that Militant Islam is a massive threat; I simply refuse to believe that we in turn must follow blindly and allow the world to turn into a nuclear Crusade. Standing for freedom is the solution; not giving into religious bigotry and fear. Shalom.

The author has taken an interesting subject and a large number of facinating, well-researched facts and managed to turn out the most boring, tediously written book on the subject that I have read so far. Think of your worst college history professor, droning on and on in that "Ferris Bueller teacher" voice until you want to jump out of your skin and you will have a good idea of the tone of this book. Maybe I'm picky about readability since I've been an editor for 20 years but I would recommend "While Europe Slept" or "America Alone" instead. However, if you've read all the other books, AND you are a glutton for punishment, this does provide a lot of information that could be interesting in the hands of a more talented writer.

Melanie Phillip's alarming little book "Londonistan" chronicles the New British Invasion, and suggests that if the Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance then the Price of Tolerance may be---Zero Tolerance.

Melanie Phillips has carved together a fascinating first-hand account of how societies die: it is alarming, dire, engagingly written and utterly absorbing. While depressing---Britain is too far gone down Dinosaur trail to save, much less mourn---it's at least a real-life laboratory lesson in the consequences of lax assimilation, weak immigration policy, and the weird, evidently intractable death waddle Europe's socialist elite have joined with the dark continent's restive, fecund, and feral Muslim immigrants.

What has a hissing witches brew of PC, multi-culturalism, and unrestricted immigration wrought in Great Britain, you ask? Phillips has answers:

1)There are now 1.6 million Muslims living in the United Kingdom, clustered primarily in largely Muslim neighborhoods in urban areas.

2)While the Caucasian English population is not replacing itself, the Muslim population boasts the highest birth rate in Europe.

3)Thus officially multicultural "Cool Britannia", its elites accustomed not to judge, is being outbred by monocultural Islam (call them "Kill Britannia"), which is all too happy to judge. Combine that intransigent, vocal, and growing Muslim minority of 1.6MM that breeds like rabbits versus the less than rabidly fecund white Brits, and prop it up by the exodus of nearly 200K brits a year, and you've got a recipe for a future Karachi-on-the-Thames where even Osama bin Laden might have a fair shake for a knighthood!

Upside: you can finally get a great curry dish in Sheffield! Awesome!

Downside: Hot babes getting stoned and crushing a [CENSORED!*] out take on a totally new meaning! London bridge really is falling down! Bummer!

The problem is that they're not only going to come together, they're going to stay, they're going to convert. In the end, though, I don't really think the Muslim tide is a bad thing. Tides happen in history; red tides of Death and displacement even more frequently. Cultures die: first of their own internal sickness and degeneracy, then by the coup de grace brought by a foreign invader's sword, scimitar, axe, or muzzle loading rifle.

In this regard, Phillip's account of the decline and fall of the modern British civilization is a little like having Tacitus or Suetonius relating the darkening state of events in the final days of the Roman Empire: it's a brisk, deeply researched, cautionary little fable of liberalism gone mad. And, in the End, it's really a lot like a Beatle's song: Live and Let Die.

This book is dangerous in that it is completely one sided. Phillips (who is Jewish) only states her argument, with no true objectivity or the ability to stand back and look at the situation logically. There have been cries for an end to the Israeli subhuman treatment of the Palestinians and Lebanese for years, and very few people in power seem to care. Is it any wonder that they feel their religion and their very lives are in danger? I tend to think that there is a territorial problem at work. Not just "hatred of the Jewish."

It reads `How Britain is Creating a Terror State Within'; the significance being with `creating' rather than `created'. Certainly, as Melanie Philips scrupulously documents, the British Government has created the danger that Britain now finds itself in through ignoring past warnings and turning a blind-eye to Islamic fanaticism, believing there to be more important issues to worry over. However, the lames of the problem are being fanned most vigorously today when the Government, rather than choose to address a problem it has been forced to face up to, has decided to skirt it and seek to find false solutions in an attempt to appease our angry, would-be assailants. On this issue, Mrs. Philips is quite right to bring the Government to task, and urge people to recognise that there is a serious threat in our midst that cannot simply be put down to anger over `discrimination' or public displays of the Christian religion. This is backed by an ocean of references to prominent Jihadists and Home Office figures detailing the numbers and excuses given for those sympathetic to Islamic murder.

However, Mrs. Philips cannot be let off the hook for letting her own political bias colour her judgement, which appears to give her self-justification for repeating the tired-neoconservative platitude that Muslims simply `hate our freedom'. Much of the book is devoted to Muslim dislike of Zionism and attempted dismissal of any role in Middle-Eastern politics in relation to Islamic hatred of the West. The facts are simply not with Mrs. Philips on this issue as it should be instantly clear to any fair-minded investigator that the occupation of Palestine is of high importance to Muslims, and is the main ideological tool for recruitment by Jihdadists. Her contention that Zionism is a positive movement also allows her to dismiss anyone who views Israel's practices as brutal and inhumane as a dangerous `Islamist' or useful idiot towards an Islamic theocracy. Clearly, Mrs. Philips is not merely viewing Islam as a danger, based on what she observes in the United Kingdom, but as a powerful opposition to her beloved Israel.

I would happily agree with much of what Phillips writes about the dangers inherent in a Muslim community that chooses to change English society rather than integrate with it. I have an abiding love of England and English culture, and the assaults on reason and tradition and western values she describes made me very angry. Unfortunately, the more I read of her book, the more I began to wonder if its purpose weren't more to beat the drums for Israel. For a book that's supposed to be about England, she devotes inordinate space to propagandizing on behalf of Israel and trying to bind the U.S. and Israel tightly together, as if they were one country. Although she talks endlessly about the straits Israelis face, there isn't a single negative comment about Israel's behavior in the whole book. Anyone who doesn't toe the line of the Israel lobby is branded as antisemitic. Her intemperate and one-sided treatment of this corollary topic seriously calls into question the fairness and accuracy of what she says about her putative main subject.

This is a vigorous and incisive analysis of what has gone frighteningly wrong in London and Britain as a whole, especially in response to the existential Islamist threat. Political correctness, multiculturalism, victimization, the nanny state, and other left wing bromides are running amuck and destroying the national identity of the country that gave us our notions of individual liberty and freedom and represenative democracy. As is predicted with reviews of Melanie Phillps, Douglas Murray or Michael Gove's books, the authors are trashed, smeared and misrepresented beyond belief. This is no tabloid rant but a thoughtful, thorough and sensitive book.

`Londonistan' is the name the French Intelligence agencies gave our capital city in the 90's because of the scandalous policy of the liberal British Establishment (including our security services) of allowing Islamic radicals preachers, terrorists and inciters have a safe-haven from which to incubate and inculcate their fundamentalist filth.

Melanie Phillips (as Christopher Hitchens has already done) has pointed to the Salman Rushdie affair as a microcosm of our curent predicament and an instance when radical Islamists clashed with Western civilization, and the multiculturalist Left lined up on the wrong side (as did many conservatives) with the forces of reaction.

Phillips painstakingly lists the Islamist terrorist exiles who "started turning up in London in large numbers" during the 1990s. Abu Qatada, Rashid Ghannouchi, Yasser al-Siri and Omar Bakri. Why did this happen? The culture of human rights championed in the late 1990s, the values of what Phillips calls the "dominant culture" was replaced by the mantra of "self-designated victim groups". Majority rule was now triumphed by `minority rights'. It became impossible, thanks to activist judges and human-rights legislation to detain terror suspects. Phillips brilliantly attacks the contemptible figure of Lord Hoffman, who ruled that "the real threat to the life of the nation ... comes not from terrorism but from laws such as these". She says of this, "The real danger was not a terrorist movement whose aim was to defeat Western democracy and re-institute a seventh-century Islamic empire that stretched halfway across the globe, but the measures that a free society had devised to protect itself from such a threat." Absolute madness, but this the prevailing orthodoxy.

It was very easy for liberal intellectuals and a cowardly establishment to blame Bush, Blair, foreign policy etc, on the radical totalitarian threat, and use Israel as convenient punching bag too. Phillips lucidly explains how anti-Semitism (or its diluted form, extreme anti-Zionism) is used in response to these problems, especially from the far Left and the extremist Islamists themselves. Even the governments own task-force into Islamic terrorism was led by self-appointed spokesmen from the Muslim community - MCB etc - who support attacks on Israel, promote conspiracy theories about Jews, smear people with the ridiculous charges of Islamaphobia and who are mysoginistic, homophobic and extremist bigots themselves.

The fad of multiculturalism has further enhanced the radicals' cause and has produced disastrous consequences. We need assimilation and integration - not separation, segregation and `all cultures are equal'. The toxic mix of a radical ideology and the desire to appease rather than stop radicalization has had serious consequences. Phillips believes that "a nation can fight to defend itself only if it knows what it is fighting for, if it is secure in its own values".

The British government and the British people, whatever their faith, should listen to her urgent message.

"LONDONISTAN" by Melaine Phillips trumpets apocalyptical notes that echo into the valley of decadence and ruin. Although this book deserves to be read from cover to cover, I skipped in and around but, learned more than I wanted to, or...whatI knew and didn't want to admit.

Melaine Phillips brings to mind the old Bob Dylan song: "The Times They Are A Changing." One verse states: "...there's a battle outside and it's raging. It will soon shake your window and rattle your walls...for the times they are a changing."

Ms. Phillips' superb insight and truthfulness will hit the reader like a upper-cut from "Joe Paluka"! Her accumulated research will open up your eyes and allow you to see the future better than any crystal ball.

She admonishes the British Government for it's overly liberal ideas, apathy, and over-extended legal reigns that seem to protect the civil rights of individuals who are more proned to destroying the standing Governemnt than working within it's statutory laws (Gee, that sounds familiar).

Ms. Philips makes the reader look directly into the "eye of the hurricane" and admit, no matter how calm it seems around us...the storm is raging just outside of our view and will eventually envelope us all if, we don't admit that "something" is terribly wrong!

Despite the English and American jurisprudence systems and it's need to champion individual civil rights, that same champion can easily become a "wolf in sheeps clothing."

Human rights are important. They are the cornerstone of our Constitution and the veneer of our Governmental system. However, if applied too thickly, the veneer will only crack and ultimately destroy what it was intended to initially protect.

Melaine Phillips believes that "Jolly old England" has lost it's identity and become fused with it's enormous pool of Muslim immigrants. She's right about one thing..."England is no longer ...Jolly."

Ms. Phillips warns that the same fate "may" await the United States if, we continue to "sleep-walk" down the hallway. I believe Ms. Phillips already knows where our fate lies.

This book is an indepth study of the subject matter and should be considered a "must-read" for all students of Political Science, History, and or, Law.

Helps one get the sequence of events and the perpetrators in the war on terrorists in mind. I have a much better understanding of what and when and who since reading this informative and well-written book.

Surely this is a book which stands or falls on matters of truth and factual accuracy. It is not good enough to dismiss it in few words.

The things in it which I knew about already, I found to agree with other sources. Probably the best recent example is Ed Husain's "The Islamist" (London: Penguin, 2007).

Of course, this book is not infallible. But there are certainly enough genuine facts in this book to warn us of serious danger ahead.

Dismissing an opinion because someone happens to label it "left wing" or "right wing" is neither here nor there. What are "left wing" or "right wing" after all? They are only labels used by the mass media or lobby groups to intimidate us into following their lead without thinking where we are going. But what relationship do these labels have to the real world? This bogus polarization has been exposed by both anarchists and liberals. A good anarchist deconstruction of this notion is found in Stuart Christie and Albert Meltzer: "The Floodgates of Anarchy" (London: Kahn & Averill, 1969) and a good liberal deconstruction is Samuel Brittan's "Left or Right: The Bogus Dilemma" (London: Secker & Warburg, 1968).

In my view, the people who are to blame for the present situation in the UK are not so much the Jihadis - they are simply doing what they see as their job. But the main problem is UK authorities who allow certain people on their own turf to foment violence on an international scale. An author that tells it as it is, she doesn't mince words. What a courageous woman!

All the people on the Left, anti-Christian, and anti-Israel should read this. Supposing that they were well-meaning, honest, and loving to their neighbors as they are to their pets, that won't keep them from being the targets of Islam. Islam hates them as much as they hate Jews and Christians. The sooner these well-meaning (and ill-meaning) people realize how foolishly they are acting the better. This book should do the job of opening the eyes of the well-meaning ones. It's a religious war, folks. A secular society can't fight a religious war; the secular has no values to stand for, nothing worth defending (as long as the agressors have been victimized), while Islam is mad as a rabid dog. Appeasement? Yeah, right. One thing is for certain: when the paradise-seeking Jihadist next door starts cutting throats in your neighborhood, they won't ignore you because you're pro-Palestinian or an atheist. Those, and other excuses, won't get you off the hook.

If a whole civilization has nothing to stand for, and everything has the same value in this crazy multi-cultural society of ours, if we have no definitive values, no faith in God, no respect for our history, what is there left for us to defend? Well, somebody else's history, values and faith. The West has reached a point of no return.

But this book is not about philisophy at all. This is a tremendous work of clear-sighted journalism. A wake-up call and a challenge for every lover of Freedom. The author will never get the honorable mentions she so much deserves, because those who ought to give them are the ones tightening the ropes around our necks, selling us cheap to the enemy.

A cultural suicide is taking place in Europe. It is not new, we've been suffering it since the rich sons-of-mummy-and-daddy turned Left in the late 60's. The Left decided they had to buy their redemption from the guilt complex they carried by siding with their dads' historical victims. The enemy showed up, alright, in the person of Islam (=fascism turned pious, in an Arab fashion). This is not to say, as the author repeatedly mentions, that all muslims are fascists. Of course not. The problem is that all the fascists claim to be muslim.

Melanie Phillips has shown a lot of courage by reporting the facts of this struggle in the UK. Describing the big picture as well as the small picures composed of the daily lives of the Brithish citizens. Fearless, straightforward, clear-minded, and right on target, she gives the names, quotes the public statements, and does an powerful analysis of the general political situation worldwide and the implications in our daily lives.

This book is dynamite. If you don't wake up reading this, you're probably alive only physically, not morally, and not spiritually. This book was such a thrill to read, despite its pessimism, and is so well written, so direct, so powerful, that I can't remember one that impressed me so much since "The Gulag Archipelago", long ago. Its pessimism doesn't overpower. It has the quality of detachedness, of being able to see the trees through the thick wood, of not getting entangled fruitlessly in discussions.

The hunger for power of the judges is exposed. The organised church, faithless, soulless, and politicised, is put to shame. The British political class are there: destroying the leftovers of what was a great country, for the votes of the mob & the irate (a lot of sound & fury). The media, but specially the BBC, is exposed for its biased policy against one religion and in favor of another (the BBC is an issue that deserves a separate book).

And it all comes down to one issue: Israel. It is not even the US, or capitalism vs communism; it is not Bush; it is not even a clash of civilizations,as some intellectuals would like to say. The istmus test is Israel. Why is it so? Read, and find out for yourself. (the Bible has a lot to say about that too).

Londonistan examines the state of the UK today from a political and cultural perspective. It chronicles the almost unnoticed surrender of British values as it is faced with a radical fifth column in its midst. Phillips shows how the prevailing mood in the UK today is similar to the 1930s and demonstrates how multiculturalism, relativism, political correctness and the spirit of appeasement are crippling the once proud nation.

The author backs up her claims with verifiable facts as she unmasks prominent personalities considered to be mainstream, like Iqbal Sacranie, secretary general of the Muslim Council of the UK. Propaganda from these sources has been granted legitimacy by the establishment. Even the British police suffer from the disease of political correctness while society in general refuses to face the fact that a civilizational struggle is looming.

Having encouraged the notion of victim culture, the British state is partly responsible for the moral inversion that takes place after acts of terrorism. The communities from which it emanates immediately claim victim status. Even more disconcerting is the fact that Leftists have rallied to the Islamist cause. The author calls this the red-black alliance, and it is also thoroughly explored in What's Left? by Nick Cohen, and in the US context in the book Unholy Alliance by David Horowitz. Thus the British media and intellectual elites, in a pathological display of denial, blame the victims Israel and the USA for the very existence of Islamic terrorism.

Anti-Semitism in the Muslim world is ignored whilst the Left itself is becoming bolder in embracing this mental virus. The distinction between criticism of Israeli actions and blatant anti-Semitism is becoming blurry, with many a line having been crossed in the leftist media. Propagandistic reporting from the Middle East is increasing and whilst some of it has been exposed by intrepid bloggers, the attitude has become entrenched in media like for example the BBC, The Guardian and The Independent. The author proposes some remedies for the dangerous state the UK finds itself in, like stricter immigration controls, monitoring of clerics and organizations that propagate extremism, and the abandonment of multiculturalism for a return to British culture. Time will tell if the UK has the guts to meet the challenges but no one will be able to say that the country hasn't been warned. The same goes for the West as a whole: Phillips is one of many voices raising the alarm. Other urgent warnings are The Force of Reason by Oriana Fallaci and the melancholy work The Last Days of Europe by the great historian Walter Laqueur. One can only pray that the warnings will be heeded.

After 9/11 the Brits (Phillips quoting a foreign intelligence source) "woke up in principle but not in practice. They still thought that the UK wasn't in the front line, and they continued with their policy of 'benevolence' the same thing wouldn't happen to them." Phillips concludes "That is surely why---at least in part---the British authorities were so shocked by the emergence in July 2005 of Muslim Britons who turned themselves into human bombs against other Britons. They knew well enough---how could they not have known?---that some young British Muslims were being recruited for the jihad." After all, Britain was "the epicenter of Islamic militancy in Europe." Moreover, in Phillips' well argued view, "Britain's capital had turned into 'Londonistan'"---"the major European center for the promotion, recruitment and financing of Islamic terror and extremism."

"Londonistan is---among other things---a state of mind that has spread well beyond the capital and, even after the London bombings, still has British society firmly in its grip." This phenomenon is the results of the confluence of "the arrival in Britain of large numbers of Muslims" and by the "moral and philosophical vacuum" presented by the decadent society that Britain has become; a society "weakened by alarming tendencies towards social and cultural suicide." "Turning upon itself, it has progressively attacked or undermined the values, laws and traditions that make it a nation, creating a space that in turn has been exploited by radical Islamism." Multiculturalism, of course, was supposed to bring in consideration of other cultures. Instead, it has been perverted to mean that the contributions of any culture anywhere deserve par respect across the board. This might be understandable in the U.N., but in an individual nation nurtured by particular ideals & colored by certain traditions one's own majority culture certainly deserves pride of place within one's own frontiers. For instance, British identity is founded "on Christianity, the common law and the history of an island people." Afford all the respect you want to, to Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, alternative lifestyle choices---heck, even vegetarians and any other minority group/persuasion/community/religion. But it's a whole different ballgame for the majority "not merely to tolerate their values as minority rights but to replace normative values altogether and subordinate the values of the majority to the minority, because majority values set up a hierarchy that is deemed to be innately discriminatory."

The author's conclusion on the Muslim minority community: "What makes these fragile egos yet more vulnerable still, moreover, is the pathological inferiority complex that affects Muslim society, the exaggerated notions of shame and honor which mean that every slight turns into a major grievance, disadvantage morphs into paranoia, and Islam itself is perceived to be under siege everywhere." "The expression of British majority values [may have become] synonymous with racism," but that doesn't mean this perversion of reality is legitimate. Britain cannot idly watch the "shifting of the center of gravity towards extremism in Islamic discourse;" for, in such, "terrorism can swim." Yes, "there is a distinction to be drawn between Muslims and Islamists," but "if the Islamist nature of terrorism is denied it is not understood." "In the US, at least there are wars over culture" (where "the churches have been in the forefront of the defense of Western values"), but "in Britain, there has been a rout." The political naivete of a Prince Charles suggesting that in some ways Islam has perhaps more respect for women's rights simply has to be challenged.
