Consent to Kill

For years, Mitch Rapp's bold actions have saved the lives of countless Americans. He has killed with impunity, tortured to avert disaster, and shown he will do whatever it takes to prevent terrorists from fulfilling their bloody wishes. His battles for peace and freedom have made him a hero to many, and an enemy to countless more. In the tangled, duplicitous world of espionage, there are those, even among America's allies, who want to see Mitch Rapp eliminated. They have decided the time has come.

Now, the powerful father of a dead terrorist demands vengeance in its simplest form -- an eye for an eye, and Rapp instantly becomes the target of an international conspiracy. This time, he must use all of his vigilance and determination to save himself before he can turn his fury on those who have dared to betray him.

America's hero CIA assassin Mitch Rapp along with CIA Director Irene Kennedy are unbeatable! They totally bypass the wimps in The Administration who are more concerned with pretenses than the reality of the war on terrorism. Namely the naive appeasers are Kennedy's new boss, Mark Ross, Director of National Intelligence as well as the Secretary of State and the Attorney General. The President doesn't wimp out. Basically the plot is about a Saudi Prince who puts out a $20 million contract to eliminate Rapp. Other Saudi royalty are also involved. The attempted murder is brokered by a former Stasi agent who comes up with a team of two fascinating killers who are recommended by a former KGB handler. The male/female team has a former member of the French Foreign Legion and his brilliant girlfriend. They nearly succeed in getting Rapp. Rapp recovers from serious wounds and dramatically gets rid of the bad guys. Tremendous, quick, gripping read even at 675 pages. I have enjoyed all books in this series. But think this one is the best.

From John Howard Prin, author of Secret Keeping: Overcoming Hidden Habits and Addictions
This is my first Vince Flynn book and it went well beyond my expectations. I found myself enjoying rebel-guy Mitch Rapp in the first couple hundred pages and the array of sleuthy characters and diverse international locations. It felt like a travelogue at times and a manual for professional assassins to follow, but with enough twists and surprises to pique my interest: like the French husband and wife assassin team and how their loving interaction sprinkled the narrative with real-life humanity.

As I neared the end, I braced myself for what I thought would be a predictable bloody ending. Thankfully, it never came. Instead I felt real pathos for the tragedy to Mitch's wife and how the pregnancy of the French woman literally and figuratively birthed a change in Mitch, layering his internal dilemma with genuine humanity.

CONSENT TO KILL packed enough pleasurable surprises to qualify as a fine genre novel.

Wow! This is our first novel by Vince Flynn that we have read - and it certainly won't be our last!

What a find. Vince Flynn is a fantastic writer in this genre. Just with this book alone, we like him better than Tom Clancy. Flynn juggles action/adventure and political intrigue with aplomb. Not an easy feat.

Mitch Rapp is a CIA operative that actually works outside the web of counter terrorism task forces, the ultimate assassin for the USA that takes care of dirty business that not even the president knows all about.

This book shows that Vince Flynn can handle solid and numerous characters that are not the typical, but interesting and deep. The husband and wife team of assassins, the showing of their internal strife while on a mission, was a breath of fresh air in the literary world. Not often you see solid character writing like this for the bad guys. (You even start to feel for the bad guys.)

We have just purchased 5 more books from this author, and will be reviewing them as soon as we can get to them. So many great writers and books out there!

If you haven't discovered Vince Flynn yet, and you like espionage-type adventure novels that Hollywood would salivate to make, then you need to try this author out.

The story is predictable to a point. The novel very entertaining. If you know the character Mitch Rapp, you already know he will prevail. Unlike some other Rapp novels, his character is much more believable & human in this one. The international tale is nicely woven & written. There's a good little twist used to finish the story

Although I read the book when it first came out, I'm now enjoying the incomparable reading of the audio book by George Guidel. He is the best voice I've heard, with the possible exception of Kenneth Branagh doing the 1st Narnia book. As far as the book is concerned: SPOILER ALERT: Thank heaven the atrocious wife Anna is no longer cluttering up the bookscape with her insufferable ego and disrespect for her husband and his work. From her tendency to be late (which invariably means that the person who is late considers her own time important and yours of no value) to her attempts to worm secrets out of the man who die to protect her (and all of us), there were times when I wanted to blow her up myself. She may have served a purpose in showing that even superman Mitch has a weak spot in his brain by getting involved with this gal, but gosh I'm glad she's gone. For that alone, this book would be worth the money. I've read every one of Vince Flynn's books and I've preordered the newest one. Go Vince!

(Hide Review...)  Commentary on Consent to Kill by Vince Flynn
Reviewer Permalink
So many of the other reviewers have done a wonderful job of briefly telling you what the story is all about; so I won't duplicate their effort. But, being a big fan of Vince Flynn in general, and Mitch Rapp, in particular, I urge you to RUN, not WALK, to grab this novel. It is absolutely FABULOUS! The best of all of them so far and probably pretty hard to top going forward...but, then, that's what Vince Flynn does so well. The character development is fine; and Mitch has an emotional side that we have not really seen before, and you will be genuinely surprised at the heart that beats within him. There are few surprises when it comes to what Mitch will (and has to) do but, nevertheless, you will find yourself shocked at some of his actions...great finesse! Let others give away the story, I just want to give this book away to anyone I care about who loves modern-day terrorist thrillers. And if you can listen to it on Audio Books, you get the extra "hit" of it being read by George Guidall. Nobody does these readings better! Reading Vince Flynn is, for me, like waiting for a Wilbur Smith novel to come out (eg: the Courtney series or the Egyptian series with Taita)...I hang there just waiting for the new book to pop out. Grab this book, sit back and enjoy yourself thinking: "Go ahead...make my day!"

This is the second Vince Flynn book I couldn't get through. Memorial Day was great. Then, Term Limits was a disaster. Consent to Kill was absolutely atrocious. It seemed the entire book consisted of the assassins going back and forth trying to decide how much money they would get for killing Mitch Rapp. It read like drivel that Flynn put out to try and keep squeezing the Mitch Rapp machine. I've given him enough of my time. Mr. Flynn, I bid you farewell.

This novel gets my "Razzz!" of the year award. I see all of the 5 star reviews and can only explain them by supposing that the people reading Flynn's books are looking for this particular sort of nonsense.
The hero is a HERO and a one of those bully boys for the President that take care of business that can't be left to those pinkos in Congress. If you have a loose sense of reality, and are among the 29% who still give Bush a positive approval rating (perhaps a redundant statement), this is the book for you. If not give it a miss and try some Lee Child, or the new novel "Volk's Game".

This is my first Mitch Rapp novel but it won[t be my last. A great story about the classic rogue CIA agent, but rogue for the good guys. And the book serves up rough justice on an assortment of bad characters, from imam apostles of hate, to inside-the-beltway paper-pushers, to amoral terrorist enablers. SPOILER ALERT. I mean, when you have the protagonist go to Saudi Arabia, strap a bomb vest on the evildoer's son, then blow up the son and the bad guy while flipping off a security camera, there isn't really anything more to do to satisfy the bloodlust of the reading audience, myself included. I only worry about one thing, which is that I share many of the geopolitical attitudes of the former East German bad guy. I hope Flynn isn't trying to tell me something.

(Hide Review...)  Atypical Characters in This One
Reviewer Permalink
I've only read 2 Vince Flynn books, but they've been enough to pique my curiousity and now I will go back and read the earlier Mitch Rapp novels to catch up on this assassin's history. I like Flynn's writing for the sometimes atypical bents he puts into the characters. Mitch Rapp is an assassin, straight-up, and almost never conflicted about his job. He is NOT a Jack Ryan (as some have likened) and we rarely get any moral pause in the action in these books. If you're squeamish, be forewarned that Flynn does detail the kills. I was shocked a time or two in the first book - Flynn took me a little past my comfort zone - but now know what to expect. I would liken it to a roller coaster you've never ridden before. A twist or turn will be too much - but then you get to the end and yell, "Wow - that was great! Let's go again!" The last few chapters of Consent to Kill are fantastic. Flynn does not take Rapp where I thought Rapp would surely go. Supporting characters are also terrific and you're left hoping to have them reappear in future Rapp stories or even to get stories of their own. Love Rapp's loyal friends. Wouldn't surprise me if Flynn has one or two turn out to be not so loyal in future books, but hey, let's just enjoy the "good guys" while we can. They kick butt (and never kiss any either!). I highly recommend this read!

This is my second Vince Flynn novel. (Memorial Day was first) There is some need to get the sequence of when you read them right, but it is not critical. It has you speculating on outcomes from the beginning, making it very tough to put down. Flynn is not afraid to hurt the good guys or make the bad guys successful, and in the end, you are curiously pleased with the outcome. Good stuff.

Very good, fastpaced reading. The author keeps things moving and something is always happening among the key players. There are quite a few characters but they all have distinct personalities and are easy to keep track of. I like a book that understands we are at war and then has the hero actually fight back. Unfortunatly in an era where Force Protection is the mantra of the US armed forces we don't fight all out and we certainly would never fight dirty, the NYT would find out. I just read online that some Marines fought their way out of an ambush in Afganistan and the headline is it's a crime against humanity because civilians got killed. That's why we are going to lose. Read this book and pretend there really is a special unit that is fighting to win, it will do you good. I read it during a business trip to Tripoli, Libya, they would love it because they really do hate the Saudis (who are the principle bad guys in this book). I plan to buy more of the series.

The latest in the great line or Mitch Rapp novels. In my opinion this is the best series of books on the market. In every one of these novels there is non-stop action and twists every time you think you understand whats happenning. Vince Flynn allows you to pick up anyone of these books and began reading without being lost on the backstory from the other books, but he also does a great job of pulling in details from the books before it.

This is my first Vince Flynn novel and I am excited to see there a more Mitch Rapp books to catch up on. I loved the protagonist who is a dichotomy of cold-blooded assassin and warm, loving husband. Truthfully, when I started the book, I really didn't know if I would like it or even finish it. Espionage/political thrillers are not my favorite subgenre, but after the first few pages with the introduction of characters which I found a bit confusing, it became a page-turner. By chapter 3 all thoughts of not finishing the book flew out the window. Only the soap-opera-ish ending jarred a bit otherwise it was a first-rate read.

(Hide Review...)  Mitch Rapp Returns in His Most Personal Confrontation Yet
Reviewer Permalink
Can a professional killer have a soft side? Yes, he can, according to Vince Flynn's latest Mitch Rapp novel--his best to date.

Mitch Rapp is known and feared the world over for his daring exploits in the service of the CIA. He has many powerful friends, most notably the president of the United States. But in his work he has also managed to accrue a number of very powerful enemies.

One of these is a Saudi prince who believes Rapp is responsible for the death of his son (referencing events that occurred in Flynn's previous novel, Memorial Day). The prince is determined to see Rapp brought down for his sins, so he hires a German contract killer to take care of the American once and for all. The German subcontracts the job to a pair of ruthless assassins who have a 100-percent success rate. What follows is a breathtaking international manhunt--but this time, the good guy is the target.

Flynn spends most of his energy developing plausible action scenes rather than character depth, so readers are required to draw on snippets of information presented in previous books to discern certain characters' motivations and drives. Even so, the character of Mitch Rapp comes across loud and clear, as do his motives for personal revenge after his would-be assassins' first attempt on his life goes awry.

One of Flynn's great strengths as a novelist is his ability to ascribe realistic and believable motives to his villains. As many scenes are written from the points of view of either the hired assassins or their Saudi backers as are from Mitch Rapp's perspective, with the result that by halfway through the book, we feel almost as sympathetic for the killers as we do for the protagonist target. Yet never does the narrative allow the reader to mistake the twisted values of the villains for anything other than what they ultimately are--pure evil.

Consent to Kill is the most thoughtful of Flynn's thrillers so far, and the added depth pays off. By giving all the main characters a good deal of introspection, Flynn is able to explore the various moral dilemmas that arise in the field of international espionage. Mitch Rapp in most cases makes decisions that go against civilized sensibilities, but on the other hand, it's important to know that there are people in the real world who have to do difficult, unpleasant, and sometimes horrible things in the interest of national security and relative global stability. The closing scene leaves Rapp facing a choice between his humanity and his sense of human justice--and will leave readers panting for more.

Flynn's books have almost no spiritual content, Christian or otherwise, and Consent to Kill fits right into that mold. On the other hand, the novels take place in a setting that necessarily includes moral right and wrong--and very often good and evil--as essential components of its underlying structure. The violence is often intense but never meaningless; language is sometimes harsh but rarely superfluous and never out of character.

The world Flynn writes about is sometimes a bleak one, but it's the one in which we all live, and we all know it has its dark sides. Flynn writes about that darkness, but he doesn't dwell on it. Rather, he focuses on the efforts of a few dedicated individuals to bring some light and order into the chaos. Christians know that the only real hope for true light and order in the world comes from Jesus Christ--who came "as a light to shine in this dark world" (John 12:46)--a point Flynn's characters miss completely. But they do their best, given the purely secular worldview that the novels express, and the result is realistic and often moving entertainment.

I borrowed my first Vince Flynn book from the "library" at work. I was hooked. Vince Flynn writes about the same subjects as Clancy. I have liked Clancy from the start but he is often too nitpicky about the minutia of his subject matter, often to the detriment to the story. Whereas Flynn gives just enough detail to lend credibility to his writing.

Nobody doubts Clancy is an insider in the community and Flynn leaves no doubt he is one too.

His stories are fast paced and a VERY good read. I recommend ANY book by him. Clancy writes about the Russian cold war, Flynn writes about the war on terror. His main character, Mitch Rapp, is undeniably a complete Bad***, I loved the Jack Ryan character, but time to retire Jack, Mitch is in town.

In Mitch Rapp, the author has come up with a truly unique character. He has depth as well as substance and is so different from the numerous cardboard characters that other writers utilize. This is a complex story with numerous plots at work, yet the author demonstrates the uncanny ability to move along rapidly with the reader always wanting more. The plot spans the globe as it goes into various countries and picks up matters that are most topical today. He places the War on Terror at the forefront as well as the adversarial roles that are played by many of the govrnmental agencies that are involved in this fight. The greatest strength that exists is in the depth that the writer has given the characters in his novel. They are believable and one finds themselves caring about them as this page turner of a novel unwinds. It is a truly special read.

IN THIS POST 9/11 AMERICA THIS TYPE OF STORY RESONATES. I HAVE READ THE PREVIOUS MITCH RAPP NOVELS AND FIND THEM GENERALLY FAST PACED AND ENJOYABLE IF NOT A LITTLE HARD TO BELIEVE.
FLYNN IS NO NELSON DEMILLE AND RAPP MORE ONE DIMENSIONAL THAN DETECTIVE COREY BUT LATELY BETTER THAN JAMES PATTERSON'S DETECTIVE CROSS SERIES.

Consent to Kell is a re-read for me. I have read and love the entire Mitch Rapp series.I picked up the audiobook of CTK after reading Act of Treason in print. This one shows a darker, crueler Mitch Rapp, especially in the latter half of the book. No spoilers, but some of the later scenes in Abel's chalet were squicky--I squirmed listening to the chalet scene. This book is not for those who are into due process in their thrillers. But the ending quite made up for it.

I have never read an VF's books before. A friend (a non-reader) couldn't put this book down, and he passed it along once he finished. Mitch Rapp is a man's man and appeals to a wide audience. VF's research into covert operations, assasins, etc. is intriguing. It's hard to explain the complexities while retaining a reader's interest, and VF does it well.

The first half of the book did not have me hooked. At the midpoint though, I could not put it down. Stick with it. I will definitely get his next book once in paperback.

Vince Flynn started his series of Mitch Rapp books about a decade ago. Actually, the first book he wrote wasn't even part of the series, but all of the other ones since have been. All of his books have a political element to them, and all of them are thrillers written with a take-no-prisoners protagonist who kills first and half the time doesn't bother asking questions later. They're all long, and as Flynn has continued to write the books have gotten longer. Of the four I've read in sequence, the lengths were (in order) ca. 430 pgs., 480, 530, and 670. Those are approximate, but about right. He's actually getting better, though, something that happens to these guys sometimes.

A good analogy here is Tom Clancy. Clancy's first book, The Hunt for Red October, is pretty poorly written, if you go back and look at it now. The dialog, especially, is terrible, and the same thing holds true for Patriot Games (which I've read was written first but published second). As he's progressed, though, Clancy has gotten better editors, and as a result the books he writes are better, too. The same effect has apparently occurred with Flynn: the dialog's better, there aren't quite as many preachy speeches about how we need to defend ourselves, and he still keeps the plot moving along nicely.

In the current installment, Rapp is pursued by an assassin following a Saudi billionaire's discovery that Rapp has killed his son in Afghanistan. There are various plot twists and developments, and frankly you shouldn't read this book without reading all of the previous ones first, but suffice it to say the characters and action are about what a reader of this type of book is looking for. Recommended.

I've read all of Flynn's books. In fact, I just picked up Act of Treason. As I'm reading it, I'm reminded of how disgusted I was with his last book, Consent to Kill, only giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Without giving away the ending, Consent to Kill is but an amateur attempt to keep a tired saga alive for the sake of a bestselling serial--that being the Mitch Rapp saga. To any real fiction writer, what Flynn resorts to in the book, in terms of Mitch's personal relationship, is quite sad; it's simply designed to keep Mitch "hungry" and "emotionally tattered" so as to allow Flynn to continue cashing in on the only story he's capable of writing.

The book started out to be intriguing, although I did ask myself how Flynn intended to keep Mitch going with the seeming direction our star spy was headed via the last novel. But, the story read like a tenth grader wrote it, a tired cliche designed for the sole sake of keeping Mitch Rapp and his million-dollar franchise chugging along.

By far the worst story Flynn has written to date. Skip this one.

Perhaps it's political intrigue which interests; if so, Vince Flynn's CONSENT TO KILL is now in paperback and provides a thriller based on modern headlines and terrorist concerns. Mitch becomes the target of an international conspiracy for his struggles to preserve freedom: CONSENT TO KILL shows his evolution from hunter to prey as he's stalked by dangerous, unseen forces for his past 'crimes'. An outstanding and engrossing leisure choice.

Vince Flynn changes up the chase and instead of Mitch Rapp being the hunter he is now the hunted.

I am glad I waited for it in paperback so I could get an excerpt from Vince Flynn's new Mitch Rapp thriller, Act of Treason but I am never waiting again. I started Mitch Rapp's adventures from the begging in Term Limits and have not been able to stop. After reading, all seven books you would think that the twists and turns would be exhausted however, Vince finds a way to give us more. I recommend his style and this series.

(Hide Review...)  One of Flynn's best books
Reviewer Permalink
Although he's been publishing books for a little while, I still tend to think of Vince Flynn as one of the new faces in spy fiction. Compared to folks like LeCarre, Clancy, Higgins or Deighton, Flynn is a youngster, but that doesn't mean he can't hold his own against the veterans. In fact, compared to Tom Clancy (who in certain stylistic ways, is probably who Flynn is most similar to), Flynn is actually the better writer. In Consent to Kill, he again delivers a high-caliber, fast reading thriller.

Consent to Kill features Flynn's principal series character, Mitch Rapp. Mitch is a super-spy in the James Bond mold, which is to say, he is something more than human. Indeed, much of the early part of the book reiterates just how formidable Rapp is: he eliminates a terrorist cleric with ease, he is recruited by a couple politicians to head a "black ops" group, and most significantly, he becomes the target of an assassination.

Rapp has such a reputation in the espionage community that few are even willing to take on the job, knowing that Rapp is tough to kill and failure will unleash his unstoppable fury. Erich Abel, ex-East German spymaster, acts as the middleman in the deal, and he winds up hiring Louis Gould, a brilliant assassin who works in conjunction with his lover, Claudia. She does the paperwork; he does the wet work.

At first oblivious to the threat, Rapp spends time forming his secret group and tangling with Mark Ross, the new Director of National Intelligence. (In Flynn's books, government employees are only two sorts: super-efficient people of action like Rapp and his boss, Irene Kennedy, or useless bureaucrats. Ross is the latter.) A couple parallel stories develop: Rapp finds out his wife Anna is pregnant just as Gould finds out the same about Claudia. There is a certain irony that Flynn exploits (but never overuses) in the similarities and differences in the way the two couples act.

One merely needs to look at the back of the paperback version of Consent to Kill - which promotes the next Mitch Rapp novel - to know that he is likely to survive the events of this book. On the other hand, no other character is as safe, so there is still plenty of suspense even with reasonable certainty about Rapp himself.

With Rapp himself the target of an operation rather than the one running it, we get probably a deeper look into his character than ever before (but not too deep; Flynn never focuses more on emotions than need be). As a result, we get to see that Rapp, despite all his strengths, isn't perfect, and the novel is stronger as a result.

Though part of a series, Consent to Kill stands alone well. If you like it, you can go back and read Flynn's other works. They're all at least decent and some are really good. This is a fast read and an enjoyable one.

(Hide Review...)  A much needed re-launch of Rapp

Well, the previous 2 books were showing that Mitch was losing his motivation to be Dirty Harry/SuperAgent and they were mostly action and no further character building.

But after this one motivation is back, I agree that the character building in this one is far greater than in the previuous books but it is not boring considering that newer and deeper motivations and games are played.

At the end is predictable but nonetheless hard to put down.
Vince Flynn has revived the series which was becoming dull.
