Mr. Hill Harper has struck gold twice! Letters to a Young Sister is a true diamond. I've read Letters to a Young Brother and was uplifted and encouraged, but this time, he was speaking to me; that younger me that still exists inside. I applaud the efforts of Mr. Harper. He is truly a blessing to the community. His respect and insight into the young female psyche should be replicated by all men. I especially was encouraged by his discussion of the young sister making a (paradigm) shift in her life (toward a more positive, progressive mode). Once again, this should be REQUIRED reading for all young ladies. I gave it to my niece for her 26 birthday and I have a host of other young ladies who will get it for upcoming birthdays and Christmas gifts. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. I eagerly look forward to future writings from Mr. Hill Harper!

Every young woman growing up needs the unyielding support from family to usher them into adulthood. For some of us, family ties are either lacking or detrimental to a positive future this is where "big brothers" like Hill Harper come into the rescue! His latest treasured release, "Letters to a Young Sister" speaks to the hearts and minds of young ladies on their way to becoming women. In this book, he gives timeless lessons that females of all ages and paths can benefit from loving oneself to loving others and the power of God's love to the power of knowing who you are and who you want to be.
This is a story about a journey of a young sister's growths, tribulations, epiphanies and love pains. The issue that was significant in this sister's life that is so frequent in other young sister's lives is the absence of father's in their lives that attributes to a lot of dissolution, heartache and missteps that some sisters unfortunately experience on their way to adulthood. This parallels my life because I grew up without my father in my life. I was fortunate, like this sister, to have a family of men and women who served as an example; for this young sister she had her mom that she could rely upon. Hill's presence in this sister's life showed her on a new path--to forgive her father. Her fears and unwillingness as well as her compelling need to forgive are real. Hill was a true leader--his presence emphasized the importance of forgiveness and strength of patience in this healing process. Throughout this book, Hill is brutally honest and dedicated to his commitment to being a friend. I commend him for his consistently and truthfulness! In essence, he mentored her into becoming more than a respectable female but he aided her into growing into a loving daughter, honorable friend and successful professional. His words of wisdom on empowerment, being financially savvy and living limitless are words to live by! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-29 02:35:39 EST)

This book is an excellentt read for any race, or age. It gives you so much insight on so many topics. Whether never experienced before or not, this book gives you a reflective voice on so many things that concerns us. It is not only offered through the eyes of a male, but interspersed with reflections from Michelle Obama, Ciara, and even has a foreword from Grabielle Union. I would recommend everybody to read it and would also advise that you purchase a copy for a loved one also.

Through this book, my 15-year-old and I have both learned tons-of-things about ourselves and each other. I even bought a copy for my 19-year-old niece. It's an excellent read for the young and young-at-heart. Thanks, Hill!

Having already read "Letters to a Young Brother", I was very excited to see that Hill Harper decided to expand upon his vision and write a book for young women. The message, the inspiration, and the obvious care and affection Hill expresses for today's youth needs to reach as many youth as possible. His books should be found in every school library around the country and beyond. Teenagers and pre-teens face more changes in their lives than ever before and Hill teaches them how to rise above the challenges and inspires them to reach their potential. I, for one, am very grateful for his vision.

Hill Harper it the epitomy of everything I want in a man, and I am elated that he has appreciation enough for young women of color to write such a book that addresses our concerns and questions as we come of age.

I especially think women should get this for thier daughters, and a second copy for themselves. It is amazing and easy to relate to. But, I don't want it to be written off as a book for kids, I'm 25 and WOW! While somethings don't relate to me specifically, I can reflect on those choices I made or watched my friends make. I took a closer look at me and ask questions and was really truthful with myself. Also, for those ladies that feel there is something missing; while he dosen't tell you what your missing, if you follow the little steps he suggest you to do (no matter how silly you feel doing them)you will figure it out on your own..and that feeling that your waiting for is so much more amazing when it comes from yourself and it's not someone telling you what THEY feel you should/shouldn't do. Anyway, I'm a pretty strong-minded female and this book did put somethings into perspective for me, about me. I'm appreciative of that. I wish him much success, he has done an amazing job. Little by little you'll find your way! God Bless....GOD BLESS

After purchasing Mr. Harper's earlier work, Letters to a Young Brother, I eagerly anticipated Letters to a Young Sister. Upon viewing it (prior to giving it to my teenaged daughter), I was not disappointed with the contents. It comes with one hundred pages more and almost twice as much stimulating advice for budding young ladies.
All young girls will appreciate the introduction to the book written by the talented actress, Gabrielle Union. She reveals a gut-wrenching saga in her life along with an uplifting message of survival. Mr Harper leans heavily on contributions from her and other well known and talented women to help give his efforts added dimension and credibility. It is interesting to note that all the doubts, inhibitions, and self-esteem issues young boys have, can be equally applied to young girls. There are slight variations in the way girls view their problems in way of priorities, but the list of issues is still the same. The bottom line is they want to be on the same page with their peers in appearance, attitude, and aptitude. I thought I understood (almost) my teenaged daughter. However, after reading Letters to a Young Sister, I realized (in her vernacular) "that is not the way she rolls". There are many things young girls (and boys) will not share with their parents, no matter how much we urge them to do so. "Letters to a Young Sister" and "Letters to a Young Brother, "... can be viable alternatives towards mentoring young people in need of an outlet ... for expressing their innermost feelings. I recommend both books, to one and all. Reviewed by Reginald V. Johnson, Upper Saddle River, NJ (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-03 03:57:15 EST)

In his latest book, LETTERS TO A YOUNG SISTER, Harper answers to the other half of the population not spoken to in LETTERS TO A YOUNG BROTHER - young women. Though he was inspired by a comment from a young woman of color, this book reaches across cultural and racial differences to speak to young women about issues they face growing up.
The narrator, Hill Harper himself, is writing to a hypothetical "young sistah," a young sistah who could be any young woman. The way Harper addresses issues like drugs, relationships, family life, and future plans for this young sistah is informal and unpretentious because of the medium he's chosen. In responding to questions and concerns from this young sistah, it is not a forced conversation or one set up like a customary teacher/student. In the beginning, Harper even admits that he might not have all the answers, but if he doesn't, he'll find a woman friend, teacher, or mentor who does. Harper includes real emails with questions from real girls around the country, a great addition. In this way, sistahs get to see what other sistahs are thinking, feeling, and worrying about. This feature was also a great way for Harper to reach out and include some very influential women's responses to these emails - real women talking about their experiences as young sistahs. I commend Mr. Harper for yet another inspirational book aimed at encouraging a generation that needs all the positive encouragement it can get. His committment to not only succeed in his own life; but to also enspire others to do the same speaks well for him and should be applauded. Thank you Hill Harper for not sticking your head in the sand.

Thank you my brother Hill for this wonderful book. I have bought 3 books. Two to my young cousins who graduated from Spellman and Hampton and one for my granddaughters to share who are 16 and 19. What they have told me they have gotten from the book is wisdom beyond what I could have said to them. Wisdom for their life, words to save their lives and make it better. That was what I wanted for these young ladies and you did that for me. God Bless You!

Its an amazing book full of praise, inspiration, honesty, knowledge, quotes, and so much more. It perfect for all ages. It provides a refresher course for anyone who needs to be reminded of how unique and special we all are. As we grow older and life creates more and more obstacles, we often lose focus. I loved this book. As a Big Sister to an 11 year old girl, I found the topics that Hill Harper spoke to "Little Sistah" about was truly what is on a little girl's mind. I loved that he took an active role in the responses AND that he had a variety of women give their responses. I would love every single parent girl to read this book.

Hill Harper is a genius! He has started a revolution for young people. First, with "Letters to a Young Brother-MANifest Your Destiny", and now with "Letters to a Young Sister-DeFINE Your Destiny". He is mentoring these young people on paper, or as he's called it a platonic hug on paper. He discusses self-esteem, education, sex, belief system, and other topics in the book.
With his educational background, he could write this book all by himself, but he doesn't. He gets help from his friends(Michelle Obama. Gabrielle Union, Nikki Giovanni, etc). This gives his targeted audience advice from two different perspectives, male and female. He is not keeping the money. All of the proceeds go to his Manifest Your Destiny Foundation. He want to set up a permanent on-line vehicle that mentors young people. If you have, know, or just see any young women from about 12-24, please but them this book. I bought 8 books the last time. I have have to do the same with this one. Be apart of the revolution. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-04 06:39:10 EST)

I'm so enthusiastically thrilled at the things Hill Harper is doing and this book will forever put him in a good light to me. I loved that he was writing a book for young guys to use to manuever through this crazy world; but when I heard he was writing a similiar type of book for young ladies, I was thrilled. I read through portions of the book and, honestly, this is something that girls AND women can relate to and learn from. You are never too young or old to learn a lesson and Hill has done a PHENOMENAL job in helping guide young women down the right road. In a day and age where reading hood-books are the norm, I think it would benefit any parent, guardian, friend, etc. to pass this book onto any lady(pre-teen, teenager, older women) who needs a lesson or refresher in the beauty of being a woman. I thank Hill from the bottom of my heart for providing a little bit of knowledge- from a man's perspective- to the younger generation. This book isn't just for African-American girls, either, this is full of knowledge and I'd recommend it to anyone. I purchased two books- one for my household and one for my younger cousin. Hill discusses sex, gossip, the b* and h words and overall respect. I love the tone of the book and how it REALLY seems like this is your older brother giving you a piece of advice. If you don't have it- get it. If you haven't heard of it before now, let this be all the notification you need that THIS can help a young girl see that she's more than a body and face...she has to DeFINE her destiny to see her worth! LOVES IT!
