Island of the Blue Dolphins

In the Pacific, there is an island that looks like a big fish sunning itself in the sea. Around it blue dolphins swim, otters play, and sea birds abound. Karana is the Indian girl who lived alone for years on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Hers is not only an unusual adventure of survival, but also a tale of natural beauty and personal discovery.
Scott O'Dell won the Newbery Medal for Island of the Blue Dolphins in 1961, and in 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this riveting story one of the 10 best American children's books of the past 200 years. O'Dell was inspired by the real-life story of a 12-year-old American Indian girl, Karana. The author based his book on the life of this remarkable young woman who, during the evacuation of Ghalas-at (an island off the coast of California), jumped ship to stay with her young brother who had been abandoned on the island. He died shortly thereafter, and Karana fended for herself on the island for 18 years.

O'Dell tells the miraculous story of how Karana forages on land and in the ocean, clothes herself (in a green-cormorant skirt and an otter cape on special occasions), and secures shelter. Perhaps even more startlingly, she finds strength and serenity living alone on the island. This beautiful edition of Island of the Blue Dolphins is enriched with 12 full-page watercolor paintings by Ted Lewin, illustrator of more than 100 children's books, including Ali, Child of the Desert. A gripping story of battling wild dogs and sea elephants, this simply told, suspenseful tale of survival is also an uplifting adventure of the spirit. (Ages 9 to 12)

This is the story of Karana, a young Indian girl raised on an island off the coast of California. Supposedly it is based on a true story, and it tells of how she survived on her native island after all of her people were removed and her younger brother was killed. The reader never knows why Karana's people were removed from the island, which would have helped me understand the story a bit better.

While Scott O'Dell is a good storyteller, there are some gaps that I wished he had explained better. For instance, when the Aleuts first came to the island when Karana's father was still living, there seems to be no gap in communications. Somehow the Aleuts can communicate with the natives. When the white men come and cart off Karana's people there again is no communication gap. However, after the Aleuts return to the island many years later, Karana cannot understand the native Aleut girl who befriends her. Finally, when we read of O'Dell's afterward, he tells how Karana cannot communicate with the whites except for sign language.

But this inconsistency doesn't detract from an otherwise well told tale. Karana fends for herself for years on her island. She befriends the leader of the pack of wild dogs that killed her brother, she breaks with tribal tradition concerning women and weapons, she finds food, she builds a shelter, she survives storms, earthquakes, and a tidal wave, and she retains her sanity. This book is well written and moves at a quick pace. Asit is written for children, adults can read it quickly, but without becoming bored with the book.

Winner of the Newbery Award, "Island of the Blue Dolphins" tells the story of Karana, a young Indian woman who becomes the sole occupant on a small island in the Pacific for several years. Based on a real woman who lived alone on San Nicolas Island from 1835 to 1853, it tells a moving story of survival where a woman with little means is forced to become resourceful, physically and emotionally strong and above all kept afloat by that fragilest of threads called hope.

When a band of Russian sailors called the Aleuts land on the island, their presence quickly becomes a bad omen for the small Indian tribe who live there. After a trade disagreement goes horribly awry, several members of the tribe are killed, including Karana's father Chief Chowig. Not long after they bury their dead, another ship full of white men arrives and agrees to take them to a safer place, their bout with the Aleuts now posing a threat to their livelihood.

In their haste to leave their small village of Ghalas-at, no one notices Karana's younger brother Ramo run back for his favored fishing spear. Knowing it is far too late to turn back for him, Karana goes overboard and swims back to the island to wait with Ramo for the next ship. She would wait a great many years to be rescued, many a tragedy great and small befalling her before she would see white sails on the horizon once again.

During her fight to survive, Karana contends with climate, the acquisition of food and shelter and the wild dogs that roam the cliffs. She also contends with the beliefs of her tribe, the construction and use of weapons strictly forbidden to women. This belief is unavoidably challenged when Karana realizes she must have a spear for not only fishing but self-defense as well.

O'Dell writes with a wistful air, Karana's voice becoming a poetic surrogate for the real Lost Woman of San Nicolas (as she was so known by historians), her own story never heard or extensively documented, a thing that is regrettably due to language barriers. He also writes of the comfort of companionship and the deep and prolonged yearning we all experience in the utter absence of human relationships.

Bottom line: A survival tale for the ages, "Island of the Blue Dolphins" has been read for almost five decades and will continue to be read for many more, its themes of hope and perseverence making it a veritable cornerstone in young adult literature.

This is a story I have read many times since I was a child. I'm sure every little girl goes through that phase where she would like nothing more than to be a wild maiden living alone with the animals, and that is probably the basis of a lot of appeal. But that does destract from the fact that this is an incredibly written, incredibly moving story of survival and the overcoming of loneliness.

Based on an old story of a woman who survived for 18 years by herself, this tells the story of a young girl who is left on an island after her people build ships and leave their homeland. She jumps off the ship to rescue her brother, who subsequently dies. While waiting for ships to return for her, she dominates the island by herself with animals for company.

The description is real and powerful, and O'Dell provides a strong character. It's great adventure and touching drama.

My babysitter got this out for my 8 year old daughter who loves to read, and I started reading it first to see if she would like it. I remember reading it as a child but couldn't remember whether I liked it or not. As an adult I found it somewhat interesting but not captivating. Nothing much happens, and I didn't think it was written in a way which would excite my daughter. I found myself wishing Scott ODell were a better writer--the descriptions of how food or clothing is made from natural products are so thin, compared to the Little House books (which are masterpieces). Since so many people seem to love it, I guess you just have to check it out of the library and see.

What a great book! Virtually every part of this book is writing at it's very best.

The setting is magical. Odell seems to tell us about another part of the island and the water with each chapter. I wish he had made a companion book to just explore the island.

The young girl is amazing. She's making spears, building huts, killing devil fish, dogs, and the like, she's exploring nearby islands, trying to escape. There's so many ways to describe her, but the simplest and the best has to be: COURAGOUS.

What I like about this book, is that Odell helps the young reader talk about some issues of life that for many young people is not talked about, subjects like loneliness, independence, loyalty, and death. This is a book that can start a great many discussions between teacher and student, and parent and student.

What makes this book even cooler for me is that it is based in large part on a true story!

I have to say that this book is truly one of, if not the greatest newbery books ever written.

This book touched me as a young girl. I think I read it about ten times growing up. It is a wonderful story about courage, survival, isolation, and trust. It is an amazing adventure and I recommend it for all children. The book is deserving of awards but I would have loved it even if it had been an obscure story that never won awards - there are a lot of good stories out there that are like that. I am going to buy an extra copy of this for a little niece, so she will have it to read in a few years. I think this type of book has the power to mold and shape lives, who we are and who we will become.

Alone, on a deserted island. No weapons. Animal predators lurking where you can't see. A need for food. A drive for survival. That pretty much covers Karana's life, when her tribe sails away, and leaves her in the remains of living by herself, for years to come. There's numerous things she has to teach herself how to do--and many things that she'll discover that she will not do again. She has to learn exactly how to fend for herself--it's a life or death matter. After all, no one may ever come back to find her...

Awesome book, very eccentric--Not your average read!
You'll have to find out how Karana becomes courageous enough to take on her natural state of isolation.

Last summer my 9 year old son threw a fit because I said that he had to do a little summer reading - I literally started reading the book aloud to him while he was whinning. I read this book in my youth and remember really liking it. We ended up reading it together and he was so intrigued with what happened to Karana(the main character) and her struggles. I enjoyed reading it with him and seeing his reactions to the very grown-up situations that she had to deal with, i.e. hunting and gathering food. It is a quick read and I recommend reading it with your child.

The book Island of the Blue Dolphins is about a girl named Karana who gets stranded on a desert island. She had to wait for 18 years for people to come back for her. Overall, this book is a great read. What's cool about this book is that is based on a true story. My favorite part of the book was when she finds Rontu aru, a dog. I recommend Island of the Blue Dolphins for anybody who enjoys adventure stories. I give it 5 stars.

Bethany - Island of the Blue Dolphins the story of a young girl who survives on a deserted island. While trying to survive she finds a lot of friends along the way. I think that Island of the Blue Dolphins is an outstanding book. I think that it should be a book that everybody should read because it is a touching story but this is not for all ages because in some parts lead to killing. On a scale of one to five I would probably give it a four.

By: Brandi B.

In the book The Island of the Blue Dolphins an Indian girl named Karana becomes stranded on the Island and has to defend for her life from the dogs. She finds out that one of the Aleut dogs has been trapped on the Island with her and becomes her friend after abandoning his pack. Karana had named the Aleut dog Rontu.

My favorite part of the book would be when she tries to kill the Devilfish, Rontu got into the grasp of the Devilfish, and when Karana had saved Rontu's life.

If I could change the ending I would because it dropped off right when I was wondering what happened to Karana. I would change it to when Karana was going to England, and when Rontu and Karana got to England.

Overall I can say that the book was awesome. It had clear understandings and Scott O' Dell had explained the story very well.

Out of 5 stars I would have to say I give it 4.5 stars.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is about a girl named Karana. Karana lives on an island with her tribe, but one day her tribe leaves but she gets off to go get her brother but later he dies. I liked the book I thought that it was very interesting. I would give the book four stars, because I think that the author explained everything very well. Karana has a dog-named Rontu but he later dies. That reminded me of my first dog because Rontu was her first dog and he died and my first dog died. I would recommend this book to people who like to explore and like animals. Lastly I enjoyed reading Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is a book about a girl named Karana who is stranded on and Island with her brother but he dies from a pack of wild dogs. They have a lot of adventures. My favorite character is Rontu because he a wild dog and he is cute and fluffy. One of my least favorite parts is when Rontu dies, it is really sad. If I got to change a part of the book it would definetly be when Rontu is dying. My thoughts about this book is that it's a pretty good book but very sad. I recommend this book to people who like survivor books. I rate this book a three star book.

By Mark L

Island of the Blue Dolphins is about 24 year old woman trapped on a island since the day the Aleuts came. The Aleuts came to the island to fish but soon they took some of the natives on the island of the blue dolphins to where they live. But the woman was left on the island her name was Karana. She has to make her own weapons food and shelter. Karana becomes friends with a lot of animals like a dog, birds, and a otter.
Two years later Karana is about 27 years old and is wondering if the Aleuts will ever come and rescue her. But one day a ship come but it was not the Aleuts so Karana tries to hide herself until the leave. 1 year later she is still on the island and her dog dies, but she sees that the dog had a son so she tries to find him and keep. Then about 1 month later Carana sees a ship and it is the Aleuts to come and save her.
I would say this book wasn't very exciting. You would kind of know what would happen next. Like when she gets off the island, you would have guessed that would happen. So I give this book 7 out of 10 exceptional but not great but you won't be disappointed.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is a book about a girl named Karana that lives on an island then her tribe moves away and she gets left behind on the island and how she survives for years alone. I think this book is exiting and good for anyone how likes adventure. The author is descriptive and makes you feel like you are there. The author also has sad parts but then does something happy happens and makes you feel better. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and books where you see how someone survives on their own. Over all I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

We are a group of third grade students and we have read the book Island of the Blue Dolphins. The boys in our group would give this book 4 ½ stars and the girls would give it 5 stars. The boys would give it a 4 ½ because of the slowness at the beginning and because of the sadness throughout the book because most of the people die. Overall, though, the boys say it's a good book. The girls give it a 5 because it's sad and exciting at the same time. The main character is a girl and in many other books the main character is a boy.

This is a book about a girl named Karana and her survival by herself on an island.

It is based on a true story that happened in the mid 1800's.

If you like animals, then we recommend that you read this book because it has a lot of animals in it. The beginning is kind of slow and a little bit sad but the book does become exciting. In this book, a lot of characters die, but that shouldn't be too scary to people unless they're under the age of eight or nine. If you don't like really sad books, this may not be the best pick, but it's a really good book in part because Karana leaves her fears behind and goes on with her life in an exciting, inspiring way.

This book is a teachers' pet, meaning every teacher makes kids read it. The book has good material, but there is no storyline, it's just random events that don't lead up to anything. Karana shows no emotion even tough everything around her dies or leaves her.

SPOILER ALERT!!!:::
Ending is horrible because Karana leaves the island, which is just dumb.

Stay away from this book.

Even years after reading it, I still remember how this book resonated with me. The story of a young girl left alone on an island when her people are relocated seems so simple. However, the story is much deeper than that. She must find food, shelter, create tools - in short, she must survive. After reading this I finally understood the phrase, "triumph of the human spirit." She triumphed, and I imagined all the things I could accomplish if she could do that. Everyone should read this book, old and young. A true classic, in every sense of the word.

This hardcover edition is especially beautiful, and I think the best presentation of the novel I have seen. The book has several full-page, full color illustrations throughout that will help even a reluctant reader get into the story. They are done in the same artistic style as the image on the cover. The illustrations, combined with a sturdy binding and a lovely dark blue dust jacket make for a collector quality publication. The retail price of $22 is a little high, but most stores will offer a discount that makes it worth while. Highly recommended!

Even as a child I read a lot. My parents were teachers. Everyone at my house read a lot. I didn't mind a lot being assigned a book not of my own choosing (except for "Call of the Wild"...I still haven't finished THAT one.....It's hard to read through torrents of tears while sobbing uncontrollably {I guess this part would be more appropriate under THAT books review})
Anyhow, I probably read "The Island of the Blue Dolphin" 4 times before I found myself actually living on that island in 1980 while in the Navy.
I was there for 3 years. Half of the island is a sanctuary for sea birds and sea elephants (they are deafeningly loud!) and the other half is a Naval Facility. I felt a connection to the island because of Karana and her story. I felt like I was walking where she had walked. No one else there had ever heard of the story or the book (where the heck did THEY go to school!). There was a very small monument (if that's what you want to call it) with her name, her face, and a short synopsis of her story. No one else felt it.
I looked for landmarks that were in the book. There's lots of caves and such. Some things seemed right out of the book. Some things maybe not.
Anyhow, I loved being "with Karana" for a while. I'll never forgrt it.
Not to mention that the book is FABULOUS even if you never go to
San Nichols Island.

"Island of the Blue Dolphins" paints a picture in your mind when you read it. Every emotion can be found within the book's pages, especially lonliness. As the story unfolds, we see Karana overcome her lonliness by making animal friends. Reading about Karana's life and her necessary survival skills, such as building her own house and searching for her own food, inspired me and made me want to read more,

I gave the book four out of five stars because it ends too suddenly. But, overall I recommend it to everybody, especially someone looking for a book about adventure and courage.

I saw this in movie form when I was a child, and I fell in love with it. Reading a list of wanted books for a Camelmobile in Africa, I found this title on the list, so I bought it to send for a donation. I read the book before sending to Africa, and I wept. This is a beautiful story of courage, heartache, strength, love, forgiveness, -- and enlightenment that we *can* live in harmony with all animals on Earth - in fact, that we are happier and far more content when we realize that all living beings belong here and have value. The tale is not sentimental, but, rather, written in the tone that one would expect from an Indian girl. In its simplicity, this book soaks into one's psyche and stays put. It is sure to make anyone who reads it become a better human being.

(Hide Review...)  Written with little feeling or emotion
Reviewer Permalink
When I read a young adult book I don't expect it to be written heavy-handedly or with lots of metaphors, but when I read any book I expect some level of characterization and sense of time. Unfortunately, Scott O'Dell's prose is so bereft of any emotion that "terse" and "austere" seem about as fitting as "purple" and "flowery." The main character, Karana, spends 18 years marooned on San Nicholas Island. Read that again: *eighteen years*. I've only been alive for 20; that amount of isolation is beyond my comprehension. Yet she only shows a hint of loneliness when (after at least 10 years by herself) she befriends a girl who is only staying on the island temporarily. I don't require Karana to make deep, introspective looks into her own soul, but a little lip-service to solitude might be nice. Papillon was nearly driven insane by 3 years of solitary confinement and this girl can handle 18 years alone on an island with only a few momentary tremors of longing?

Even aside from loneliness I wanted Karana to merely express some feeling about anything. The first-person narrative merely serves as a clothesline to string 18 years of activity on: "Then I made a fence out of whalebones...then I domesticated a dog...then I went hunting for elephant seal...then I went hunting for devilfish...then I decided not to hunt devilfish anymore." Does she miss her parents or brother? Does she beleive in some form of religion? Does she wish her diet had more greens in it because she thinks her legs aren't muscly enough? I wished she could have expressed some feeling, something aside from "Fought the dogs again, killed three but not the leader. I need a stronger bow." The book reads more like a journal than a novel.

Overall O'Dell's novel simply isn't very compelling or interesting. I suppose there aren't many other survival novels with female protagonists, but beyond that this novel has little going for it.

This book is one of those rare books that makes you see your whole world in a different way. Things that seem so important like checking your email or getting a new outfit, pale in comparison to the life Karana was able to lead. Without a complaint or a whimper, she found a way to live on the island by herself for so many years.

I was truly overwhelmed by her physical and mental strength. Then to find out that this was the fictionalized story of a real human being made it feel so much more awe-inspiring. Karana is a true role model for people of all ages.

Although this story is about a girl, I recommend this book to both boys and girls. I think that the things that she did to survive will impress both genders. I also think that it is an important story to read as a way of putting a priority on the precious things in life.

I had the opportunity to read this book when I was young but never did. I'm sorry that I waited so long. This is a beautiful and well-written book. The author's extensive research paid off in the plethora of detail that helped us to feel like we were on the island with Karana. I'm sure I will read it many times over and learn something new with each reading.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O' Dell is about a girl named Karana who is the main character. Her dad is the chief and her brother is Ramo. There a village that is not that big and they're ante technology. So Karana and Ramo saw a ship and they were looking at it so they went to tell their dad. So when the people came down they told the chief that they wanted to hunt otter. So the Russian leader was telling the chief that they would divide the otter so it could be fair. The Russian leader took some otters without sharing his part so they got mad and started a fight, but it ended. So the chief was killed by the Russians and then they fled but in a few days later they came back. So they were told to leave with them so all of them got ready to leave so Karana was on the ship but she notes that Ramo wasn't there so she jumped off the ship. When she found Ramo they already were too far to catch so she lived in the village but she also berried all of the dead bodies that were around the Island. She saw a pack of wild dogs and they ran off they saw them and Ramo asked, "will the ship come back?" because he didn't want to stay in the Island. Then in the morning she was looking for Ramo so then she found him. So she made weapons so she could protect herself from those wild dogs. The weapons that she made were made of different materials because she hardly could get good material. Then Karana waited for ship but when the fist storm of winter came she new that she wasn't going to be helped. She found canoes so she saw they were old but she found one that was alright and took off but the water would get in the canoe so she just returned to the Island. So she was trying to find a place to store the food that she had so she went to a place where there was lair of the wild dogs. She made a fence of whale bones that had been washed of before the villagers left. She felt secured because the fence so when she cooked, foxes came but they couldn't get in and one day the pack of the dogs saw her tracks that she had left but she sprinted off before they saw her. So she went to the cave of the dogs and she made a fire and some dogs ran off but the leader went towards her and she killed two dogs but not the leader because she just wounded him. So she looked for him and she cured him and gave him food. Then the dog would always be in her gate waiting for her so them she named him Rontu that means fox eyes. She still looked for a ships but it seemed they forgot about her and when Rontu robbed a special fish she would talk to him but he acted like he didn't understand her. So Rontu and her set sail in a canoe and we were just seeing the Island. So then they climbed on top of a cliff and we noticed that the pack of dogs circled us and with its new leader. To be continued!

So I thought the book was amazing and it was the best book that I ever have seen. It didn't have anything that I didn't like it was the bomb and if I could I would give it the award of the best book. So you just have to get a copy of it because you will also like this book.

(Hide Review...)  Determination to Survive

It is the 1800s and Karana, an Indian girl, lives with her tribe on a warm island called the Island of the Blue Dolphins. The lives of the people in her tribe are mostly peaceful, but over the years they have had some problems. A group of Russians occasionally comes to their island to camp and hunt the otter that live right off the coast. The last time they came, they treated the people of the island badly.

Now Karana is twelve and her father is the chief of their tribe and the Russians have come again to hunt. They promise things will be better this time and Karana's father reluctantly agrees to let them stay and hunt, for a price. At the end of their time hunting, though, the Russians try to get away without paying the fair price for the otter they have hunted. A battle ensues, and most of the men of the tribe, including Karana's father, are killed before the Russians get away.

When the rest of Karana's tribe leaves to find help, Karana finds herself in a position where she has to fight to survive until someone returns for her.

I liked Karana's determination to stay alive and the fact that she never gave up, even when she worried the ship would never come back for her. Some parts of this book got boring, though, especially when long stretches of time passed when nothing new was happening. Karana spent a lot of time gathering food, which wasn't very exciting.

I read this book when I was in middle school and loved it! The heroine is a strong female who is very capable of taking care of herself. Her bravery and intelligence is an excellent example for young girls to learn from. I still have this book today and when my children are old enough I hope they will enjoy it as much as I did. It's a fabulous read for any age.

Can the book reviewers please pay attention. This is not the book, this is the VHS movie section. I see many book reviews, but not a single movie review. I'm glad everyone liked the book, but we need to see if the movie is any good here. I am sure it has alot going for it based upon the book, but I have seen some movies do a terrible job. What about this VHS movie? Has anyone actually seen it? Also can someone tell me how to get people to sell it for a reasonable price. Used rental copies for $22 to 125 is outrageous. One can only hope it comes out on DVD and these scalpers lose money.

This book always left me hanging. I could connect this book to Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix because you never know what's going to happen and it's a mystery. When my mom introduced me to this book I loved the cover. It had dolphins on the front and I love animals. When I started reading it, it got better because the story inspired me to think about the people who have to find their own food and make it eatable. When you start reading this book you will be walking with the Indians until the last page folds. Good Luck!

This book I am reviewing is Island of the Blue Dolphins. It is written by Scott O'Dell. This book deserves 4 stars because it is a very exciting adventure story and it is well written. This book is about a girl named Karana who has an amazing adventure. It starts when her tribe leaves the island and forgets her brother Ramo. So she swims back and her and her brother are the only ones on the island. Then soon Ramo is killed by wild dogs. Karana has to live on the island alone for a really long time. She gets pets and makes friends with the wild dogs. Then Aluets come to the island to hunt seals. There is one girl in the tribe. Read this book to find out what happens to Karana and the Aluet girl

I recommend this book to 5th or 6th grade. This is a very good book. Also we think it is based on a true story. That's my review.

Absolutely yes! I won't tell you about the story, as 497 other people have already written about that as of this moment : )
I will say that it was very interesting and enjoyable reading, with some sad moments as well as happy ones. I read it quite a while ago, but I recall reading that it was a fictional work written after bones were found on a small island - a story which incorporated the facts available, to explain how the bones could possibly have ended up on the otherwise deserted island. The book is not too long, and is written in an easy-to-read style.

This book is great because our narrator is a young girl who is strong and courageous. She shows the beauty of the Channel Island, Coral Cove, through her eyes. We are able to understand and appreciate the Native American of Ghalas-at through the harsh experiences of a young girl who is left behind to fend for herself. We explore the creatures on land, sea and air as well as the vegetation and the beauty of Coral Cove. This book is a must read for any child or adult who wants to understand the beauty of the Native people of the Channel Islands, Coral Cove.

"Island of the Blue Dolphins" is a wonderfully-written book, and it's a good idea for a movie. Well, this adaption I was less than pleased with. The acting was terrible, and the special effects were cheaply done. I hope there is another movie made; the book deserves better.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is book that shows the coming of age of a young girl. It tells about the survial of a young girl, Karana, who is forced to live on an island alone as she awaits for help.

Both male and female students can appreciate this book. It is packed with emotion, mystery, and adventure.

I enjoyed this book. I read it in elementary school, and having to read it again as an adult I can appreciate it more. This is not a book that should be looked as just another book to read for homework. It would be worth reading for leisure. Not only can students learn from this book, I think adults can as well.

I was FORCED to read this at school and I actually loved it (which is astonishing because I always hate the books School makes you read)

It had a point to it (might i add that it's a unique point) and a bunch of emotion . I couldn't beleive some of the things i cried at in that book. they were things I thought i would never ever cry about but the author Scott O'Dell got me so into the book i couldn't help myself.

I recommend it to anyone and can be read by anyone. It has a true setting and story-line that it's based around and is exetremely alluring.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is an inspiring book that showed the strength and intelligence of its main protagonist, Karana, through a very precise exposition of her survival ability while left alone on an abandoned island. I enjoyed reading this book because of its tight story line that pulls me further and further into the narration itself. I finished the book in half of a day because I just could not let it go and really wanted to continue reading to find out what is happening next. Before I realize it, I finished the book. There are moments of tragedy in this story that bring settle shudders to my heart as various characters in the book lost their lives due to unforseeable reasons: Chowig, Karana's father and also the chief on the island was killed in a battle of conflict and Ramo, Karana's brother was killed by a group of wild dogs. I believe Karana was able to survive because she forged a strong bond with the nature and environment around her. As the story comes to an expected close, it was a happy ending nonetheless.
