Favorites for nearly 100 years, these classic novels follow the adventures of the spirited redhead Anne Shirley, who comes to stay at Green Gables and wins the hearts of everyone she meets.

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, send for a boy orphan to help them out at the farm, they are in no way prepared for the error that will change their lives. The mistake takes the shape of Anne Shirley, a redheaded 11-year-old girl who can talk anyone under the table. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination quickly win over her reluctant foster parents. Anne's feisty spirit soon draws many friends--and much trouble--her way. Not a day goes by without some melodramatic new episode in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on, Anne declares her eternal antipathy for Gilbert Blythe, a classmate who commits the ultimate sin of mocking her hair color. Later, she accidentally dyes that same cursed hair green. Another time, in her haste to impress a new neighbor, she bakes a cake with liniment instead of vanilla. Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of books about Anne have remained classics since the early 20th century. Her portrayal of this feminine yet independent spirit has given generations of girls a strong female role model, while offering a taste of another, milder time in history. This lovely boxed gift collection comprises Anne of Green Gables, Anne of the Island, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

I honestly thought that before I read this book that Anne of Green Gables was about a girl who lives on a farm with her aunt and has all sorts of normal, sappy adventures. I thought it was going to be a dull, happy-happy sort of book. What I got was almost the exact opposite of what I expected. Even though the plot of the story was sometimes childish, I kept wanting to read the book to find out if the Cuthberts (specifically Marilla) would ever accept Anne. I liked how throughout the story Anne actually grew up, unlike other books I've read.
Sometimes the story got a little dull and repetetive and I had to say to myself "The chapter'll be done in a few pages, just get it over with". It was almost like a pattern. One chapter would be happy, the other Anne would have gotten herself into trouble again. I enjoyed some of the scenes where Anne would get herself into trouble, and sometimes found myself cheering on Anne as she whacked a boy for calling her 'carrots'. Also, the way Lucy Montgomery developed Anne's personality was enjoyable. I liked how Anne would actually stand up for herself when someone did something to her, and how she thought like an individual and was different. All in all, it was a cute, if childish, book. I would recommend this to anyone under the age of 13. Anne of Avonlea is the sequel to Anne of Green Gables. Anne has grown up and is 17 years old, but is still every bit the imaginative girl she was in the last book. Anne of Green Gables was a little childish for me, but Anne of Avonlea was more... not grown up, just different. In Anne of Green Gables, the schemes that Anne and her friends make up are over fantastical, like children will make up. The man they imagine they'll marry has to be 'dark, mysterious, tall'. In Anne of Avonlea, Diana's boyfriend/future husband doesn't match really at all what she wanted before. It adds a touch of reality. At first when I read on the back of the book that Marilla was going to adopt twins, I felt kind of resentful. I was like "They won't be as good as Anne.". But, when Davy and Dora joined the family at Green Gables, I fell in love with them. Prim and proper Dora, but rebellious and mischievous Davy. I laughed when I heard Davy put a toad in Marilla's bed. The characters are well developed, changing from children to teens to adults. I appreciated the fact that Montgomery put in 'bad days' where one of the characters would have a horrible day and come home and complain. It (again) made the book more real. I had no trouble reading this at all, because there was never a boring page. In Anne of the Island, Anne Shirley leaves Green Gables and heads for Redmond College. On her second day there she meets a new friend, Phillippa Grant, Phil for short. Anne of the Island was better in some ways than the other books. It shows Anne's confusion on love and growing up. It also made me think more, specifically in the chapter of Ruby Gillis's death. It made me think about heaven and the afterlife. The thing that irritated me and pulled me out of the story was that it was so corny. Anne hears Gilbert is sick and suddenly realizes that she did love him after all. 2 people she hardly knows propose to her. It reminded me that this was a fiction novel and filled with clichéd things. I also think that Anne depended too much on her imagination, and that it was slightly ironic that when her exact, ideal man came around that she turned him down. The book was pretty good in the sense that it wasn't as silly, but when it comes to reality, it pretty much fails. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 03:42:55 EST)

This a great price for a great series of books but it has a major problem. The type is so tiny, it's hard to read. I bought these books for my 8 year old and it's really a strain on her eyes to read them for long periods of time.

This review is for "Anne of Green Gables" which is the first of eight books in the series. It is a wonderful story, with uplifting and positive views toward life and what's important in life - relationships and caring for others. This story feels like life in a Norman Rockwell painting. Although it is classified as young adult (primarily girls ages 9 and older), as an adult I found it worthwhile and uplifting.
Story brief: Anne Shirley is an imaginative and optimistic orphan with a keen sense of beauty and justice. At age 11, she is adopted by an elderly couple who live on a farm in Prince Edward Island, off the eastern coast of Canada. The story covers her life from ages 11 to 16 ½. In this book Anne attends the local school and then a boarding school where she earns a teaching certificate. The story is about herself, her experiences and interactions with various other children and adults in the community. Of the eight books, I have only read the first two. The second book "Anne of Avonlea" was nice, but not as wonderful as the first book. I think the entire series might be best appreciated by younger readers. But the first book is a definite yes for all ages. Story length: 308 pages. Sexual language and content: none. Setting: around 1900 Prince Edward Island off the coast of Canada. Copyright: 1908. Genre: young adult, human relationships fiction. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-12 02:40:13 EST)

"Anne of Green Gables" is a classic every girl should read, no matter how old she is. The reader travels with Anne and delights in the poetry of everyday life seen by the eyes of a little orphan girl who doesn't cease to appreciate nature and whose wonderful imagination can turn a dull day into an adventure. This beautiful boxed set makes the perfect gift for either those who enjoyed the first book and would like to know what happened to Anne, or those who are reading the story for the first time.

It had been many years since I read the first two books. I recently took the books off my shelves and reread them and realized that even as an adult, past the "youg adult" stage of life, these are wonderful stories. I was amazed to see the copyright date and see that it was 100 years since Lucy Maud first wrote them. Anne girl has withstood the test of time. When I realized there were more books in the series, I checked here and found the anniversary package. The price was more then great and I loved these stories also. Anne Shirley will always be a "kindred spirit" to me.

I can't think of a better set of books to give to a daughter, niece, granddaughter, etc. When I first read Anne, I was a little too young for some of the vocabulary, but I got through it, and really loved the books. They shaped my reading tastes and my imagination. Anne is funny and charming as a character, and Montgomery skillfully shows how she matures and becomes just as endearing as a woman. I could identify with Anne's flights of imagination and romance. Themes include family bonds, love, and passionate pursuit of learning. These are great universal themes that still ring true today. Montgomery also adds the occasional bit of satire of the prevalent denominations in Canada at the time. I enjoy these novels still because there is that more adult level at which they can be read, while still leaving out anything questionable for children. I can't wait to read these books to my daughter.

Even though Anne lived long ago and far away, she still speaks to us today. She becomes real as we live through her happy times and sad times. She does not always make the right decision and sometimes I want to say to her "What are you thinking?" If she needs a good cry, she goes ahead and has a good cry. Her moods are very understandable. Yet her optimism carries her through any situation.

These are wonderful books! I bought these after my son (age15) had an appendectomy to keep him from extreme boredom. We do read aloud time at our house and I had planned on using these books. These didn't make it that long. We have the Anne of Green Gables movies with Megan Fellows. But the books are even better than the movies, although the first movie follows the book really well. Needless to say, the whole family can't put them down. Everyone seems to want the one someone else is reading.
The books are durable and the pictures on the cover are pretty! I can't say enough good things about these books. Great value!!!!!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-28 02:13:59 EST)

This was one of my favorite series when I was younger. I was probably older than the average reader when I began. My sister received the first two books as a Christmas gift and neither of us read them for years. Finally, I picked up Anne of Green Gables and started reading...and couldn't put it down. I moved on to Anne of Avonlea while entreating my parents, grandparents and all other relatives to buy me other books in the series. I loved each and every book as I read them, and over the years have read the series in its entirety multiple times.
I have to say that my favorites are the first three (Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island) and the very last one (Rilla of Ingleside), and I've definitely read those four even more than the whole series. I have favorite quotes, chapters, and incidents, and I think every young girl would love this series! I also want to add that L.M. Montgomery is a fantastic author. I have also read her Emily of New Moon series multiple times, as well as various compilations. She's wonderful! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-25 02:03:25 EST)

I bought this set as a gift for a "kindred spirit" who also loved the Anne of Green Gable Series.
This is a continuation of Anne of the t.v. series. Her life with Gilbert and the lives of her children. The thing I loved about Anne was the unusual relationships she had with her adopted mother and father (Melissa and Mathrew - sister and brother), her best friend Diana, and the children she taught. The latter books gave a glimpse of life as a doctor's wife and the mother of sons gone off to war. It will make you cry and laugh and marvel that words can have a magic all their own. When my Grandfather was a boy he speant time on PEI on a farm located very near where Green Gables would have been. He bought this set for me long before i was able to read and they sat on my shelf until my high school years when i finaly picked them up. I had watched the movies with my Grandfather as far back as i could remeber and assumed the books would be worth reading. They quickly surpassed all other books and became my favorite.
Now, having just graduated college and looking for a litte direction and inspiration (like Anne I'm looking for work as a teacher) I picked them back up and have been rereading them. I feel like these books such life lessons that anyone with any beliefs can read them and learn good values. These books and movies have always been like a comfert food for me these are the books and movies i read and watch when things are going bad. I highly reccamend these books to people of al ages, they are well worth the time, and are a nice and easy read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-14 10:10:36 EST)

Oh! The trouble that Anne has gotten in to, but yet, she is so innocent and kind hearted. This book illustrates vividly, the trials of a young girl, the heartache and happiness. This story is a "feel good" tale, and you will walk away feeling fresh and new. Parents....this is a wonderful book for children, inspiring, truthful, and open. This series, along with the Little House on the Prairie books, are highly recommended.
For young adult, I also recommend a slightly darker novel called "The Wolf Experiments" by Carey Borgens. The main character, also a young girl, is an honest person, and easy to relate to. Her world is filled with nightmares, and after an accident that claimed her memory, she slowly discovers who she is. The novel is filled with animals, and also shows us the grim reality of what man has done to the environment. Radiation is a global problem and the young girl, Alex, has a secret that might save the world. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-07 13:11:35 EST)

I have loved the Anne of Green Gables stories since I was a girl, but never had the books as I used to borrow them from the library. Finally as I got older I resolved to get the whole collection and this set is a relatively inexpensive set that comes in a nice box that holds all of them together. Every girl should read Anne's stories at some point in her life for they are filled with childhood innocence, beautiful scenes, and heartwarming characters that remain with you long after you've read the stories.

I'm a big fan of the classics and was happy to order this set for my neice for her birthday. I was terribly embarrassed however, when she opened the set the box holding the books came completely apart! I think a boxed set of books (even paper back) should be framed in materials more solid than heavey construction paper. Next time I'll order hard back and avoid the humiliation.

Like some people, I tend to be really critical, in books or movies, is "love" or "hate" to me. Especially in movies based on books.
I know and love the Anne of the movies...But this books were just a wonderful experience to me...so much...that..from now on I just couldn't see the movies or love them as before. Every single book, from "Anne of Green Gables" to "Rilla of Ingleside", take the reader to a fantastic journey, full of sweet and unforgettable moments, simple moments that make you smile and think "dejavu". "Sometimes the best things in life are the simple ones", the firt day at school, the first friend, the inocent first worries, the garden at moonlight, that faithful doggie, the first love, the university, the babies, the crazy cats...I can go on forever with this list... If you read this (yes, I'm talking to "you", fellow reader), I recommend this series for your collection...if you have six or a hundred years I'm positive...you're going to love it. Like Anne, maybe you could discover a "kindred spirit" or a "son of Joseph" while you read this, ...and then, maybe, you can recognise more of them in real life. Ultimate and not hyperbole... The content of these books has been thoroughly aird by others. I'm buying another set because my (21 year old) daughter noted that she did not have a set, that she vividly remembered that I read these books (among many many others but these specifically) to her, that they had contributed with clearly remembered significance to her becoming an avid and joyful reader and that she one day wanted me to read them to her children.
Ultimate. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-09 07:26:38 EST)

There really isn't much I can add to the other reviews on this series. I fell in love with these books, as a child, and found myself to be a kindred spirit to Anne. I still love them as an adult. It's hard not to love Anne. I think I saw the mini-series as a very young child, before I read the books. The series, though quite good, does stray somewhat from the books; why, I can't understand. The books hardly need improvement. There is also a movie, made in the 1930's (I think), starring an actress actually named Anne Shirley. However, this movie does not follow the book very well at all.

These books are really neat! From Anne's adventerous childhood to her motherhood, these books will hold you captivated! I love the whole series, except for Rainbow Valley, which I don't like as much. Anne is a really nice, kind girl. These books are excellent for all girls, even teens, especially teens tired of modern books aimed at young readers that are filled with tired stereotypes about bratty girls who like to date 'hunks'. This is pure, joyful reading.
