| Cisco CCIE Fundamentals: Network Design & Case Studies | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Part 1: Internetwork Design provides a set of general guidelines for planning internetworks and specific suggestions for several key internetworking implementations. Part 1 focuses on identifying the essential technologies and appropriate implementations for specific environments. Part 2: Internetworking Case Studies provides practical examples illustrating how readers can implement Cisco Systems software features. Case studies address implementation concerns and show how to apply features. Detailed configuration file examples and network diagrams are included.

For a sophisticated view of networking design concepts that goes from lofty to granular in the blink of an eye, Network Design and Case Studies is a sure winner. This mammoth entry in Cisco's growing collection of reference books provides equal parts academic theory and practical application.
The first half of the book deals exclusively with design, starting with an explanation of the three types of networks (campus, wide area, and remote connections). The book outlines the design trends governing those networks today and explains the devices used to create them and their functions, as well as effective ways to integrate the three. The remaining chapters veer off into more specific network types, such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Internet Protocol (IP), and Switched LAN, and the equipment and protocols best suited for those situations. The second half of this volume is dedicated to real-word problem solving. The 11 "case study" chapters focus on particularly sticky issues--such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) redistribution, reducing Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) traffic in Novell Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) networks, and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) broadcast flooding--and propose configuration solutions to fix them. As usual, this books holds the requisite flood of appendices; however, in this instance the "Reference and Recommended Reading" entry is undoubtedly the most useful. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt |

in fact, it just explains more deeperly than the ccnp routing book and don't get the step that expounds the routing protocols throughout.
with all other cisco books , they are only technologies guide. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 11:47:15 EST)

This is definately not a book to use to study for your CCIE, but it contains an amazing amount of information on a wealth of different topics from Routing protocols(including BGP4), APPN, SNA, ATM, Multicast, etc. It will sit on my desk as a great reference.

It's really just a case studies book. If you want to look at typical examples how people use Cisco equipment - it's a right choice. But if you want to dig deeper in some particular area, or if you want to learn networking background you should read something else.
I like this way to explain purpose of this book. Let's imagine you met a good Cisco guy and he let you stand behind him and watch how he does his job for a little bit. You can grab some tricks, get some vision of the process, but he is not trying to teach you. It's a good addition to the strong theoretical background but not a replacement. Full of some very usefull case studies, this book has good approach towards network design. As a candidate for CCNP, I used this book to get some additional knowledge, from a practical point of view.

An O.K book for starters and who want to get to know a bit about N/W design. But, it's too non-technical to be of any use to designers. Definitely, not CCIE level. Not worth buying if you can get same info from cisco web-site

This book is online. Don't waste your money. If you don't have a CCO account I would suggest getting it. This has good configuration examples.

I was very exited to purchase this book, however, I became quit disappointed after I thumbed through the pages and realized that it was the same information found on their website. I am returning the book and leaving Cisco an email to express my disappointment.

The book is a great reference, reads very well and has a lot of useful information. BUT, all the chapters, case studies, and appendices are available from Cisco's website under their support and documentation subject area. Of course I put 2 and 2 together AFTER I bought the book.

This stuff comes straight from Cisco Connection Online - with a few added wrinkles.. It is nice to have it in compact form, espescailly for those who hate reading from a screen. Still, not as good a Sam Halabi's book, "Internet Routing Architectures" in terms of depth of content.

This books is probably the best guide to designing networks with Cisco products that I've seen... and very important to someone preparing for the CCIE exam. Where R. Giles' "Cisco CCIE Study Guide" is geared toward preparation for the written exam, this book focuses more on the Cisco practicals needed for the lab exam. The case studies, especially, provide insights into the kinds of scenarios one might see during the lab test.
My only complaint is that some of the included configuration examples have incorrect command syntax. The only way to tell, however, is to try it in a lab, or refer back to the Cisco documentation. As painful as that can be, it's also good practice for the lab exam! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 07:29:35 EST)

I picked up this book at 1:00, and by 3:00 had copies of it for all the network engineers in our staff. Without a doubt, the best design and implementation guide (checklists for everything) I've seen on routing and switching technology. Very strong chapters relating to SNA, ATM, and multimedia integration. If you maintain or design networks with with Cisco routers, you need this book.
