In this tense novel of legal and political intrigue, Tim Quinn, the former judge previously seen in The Majority Rules, is assigned to investigate and compile a dossier on the newly appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court before his Senate confirmation hearing. The President has achieved lame duck status with a soon-to-be unfriendly Congress more bent on politics than policy. He realizes that the chance of establishing a legacy before his Presidency comes to an end is slim at best. So when the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a reasonably young and vigorous man, unexpectedly dies, the President happily appoints an interim successor to the position--the first black Chief Justice in US history. But one of the most conservative justices on the court feels that the position should have been his. He is hell bent on claiming it no matter who gets in the way...even if it means Quinn's report will bring dishonor to the highest court in the land.

The Report to the Judiciary Judge Sullivan writes straight from his gut and heart. There is no need for use of any second-hand information based on his extraordinary background as a West Point graduate, Airborne- / Ranger- (and instructor) qualified, VN combat veteran, White House counsel, and distinguished jurist. Both this book and his prior one, THE MAJORITY RULES, are fast-paced, totally realistic, intricately detailed (but well-explained) thrillers. They both kept me up late a few nights to seek the outcomes. I await the next one....or more !!!

It's hard to imagine a plot that combines domestic terrorism, the Supreme Court, and Washington-insider politics, but this book brings all of these elements together seamlessly in a fast-paced thriller. It's the second Sullivan book that I've read, and he is now among the authors that make me eager to see what they will write next.

Ruthless corporate power brokers, tense congressional hearings, accusations of marital infidelity, shrill TV talking heads, high-tech spying, assassination attempts. It's all part of a normal day in Washington, DC. If you don't believe me, just read a few weeks of the Washington Post. And if you want to get it all of the above in one fast-paced legal thriller, read The Report to the Judiciary. Judge Sullivan has hit all of the angles in this novel that should appeal to a wide-variety of readers. It's worth it alone for the detailed and knowledgeable insight into the military and spy worlds that Judge Sullivan can provide like very few others.

I thought this book was great! I found Judge Sullivan's insider knowledge that's exhibited in this book to be troubling. It's not only murder and bullying that gets things done in Washington courts but greed and personal IOU's. With Sullivan's background this is a completely believable story. Who would know better? This book had a hold of me from the first page. And with an unexpected ending thrilled me to the finish. Want to see what dirt could be going on in your Supreme court? Read this book!

Eugene Sullivan's REPORT TO THE JUDICIARY is the first book I've read in years that I could not stop reading. It races from chapter to chapter, and each chapter leaves the reader in increasing suspense. I could not guess what the ending would be until I read the last pages.
Sullivan is a retired judge, and knows more about the inner workings of the US Government than most observers. I recommend this to anyone who wants an excellent read full of excitement -- and wants to know how Washington REALLY works. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-02 03:56:07 EST)
