Jason does a great job of giving the 30,000 foot view of the stock market. He covers what has worked, what hasn't and what legendary investors use. He explains some of the common strategies (eg Dow Dividend Strategy). He also summaries similarities between those legendary investors.
This is a very easy book to read, with lots of information and worth every penny. I highly recommend it. A great intro to investing book! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-06 04:10:37 EST)

I have read a couple financial books and this one cuts to the chase quickly. Jason uses simple explanations throughout the book along with easy-to-follow examples.
Actually, I was somewhat apprehensive due to the informal tone and lack of stuffiness. But all of it is backed up. Some of the strategies (eg Dow Dividend) are corroborated in a book I am currently reading (Stocks for the Long Run, 4th Edition by Jeremy Siegel, who is a Prof at MIT). This is a very easy book to read, with lots of information and worth every penny. I highly recommend it. A great intro to investing book! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-03 03:55:00 EST)

For a person with no background in the stock market this book provides good novice explainations. However, the latter chapters are riddled with the authors self promotion, and recommendation of several ETFs rather than individual stocks. The MidCap ETFs spoken so highly of in the book with great returns (charts included) did not perform anywhere near as good as stated. In fact the the two ETFs the book champions would have earned a mere 4% over the last 5 years. You can get better performance from a bank savings account.

This is the second investing book that I've actually read. I've purchased many. I actually read The Millionaire Next Door and this one.
This book was simple, easy to follow and easy to understand. I read it in two days while traveling, and I'm going to return to it over and over again as I venture on into the world of investing. I also ordered Jason's Mutual Fund guide as I am always overwhelmed with decisions when picking investments for my 401k. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't know much about stock investing, wants to seek larger returns and is overwhelmed by all the information out there. Jason cuts to the chase, speaks to both kinds of investors (value/growth), introduces you to the masters, then synthesizes in a way that actually make sense. I'm impressed, Thanks! This is a great little book for a beginning investor. I've purchased it for friends who've expressed an interest in learning about the process. It gives all the basics so that a person can further explore areas and methods of investing that fit their personal requirements from investments.
It is not comprehensive. For instance, it doesn't talk about GARP (Growth at a Reasonable Price) methods. If it were it would be a much larger and more complex book, however. It serves its purpose quite well and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get started in investing with stocks. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-17 02:04:35 EST)

As a novice investor, I picked up this book hoping to gain some overall knowledge of the stock market. I was amazed at how brilliantly written it was and I can't wait to read it again! I have read several other publications up to this point, but most were packed with nothing but mumbo jumbo technical terms that will make anyone go to sleep within seconds! Jason makes the market easy to understand, exciting, and even incorporates some comedic tone throughout the book. Although this book is targeted at novices, I feel that by the end of the book he has taught several advanced expert level strategies that will ensure wealth down the road for anyone who follows them diligently. Also, he is truly a genuine man, not trying to convince the world that you can become a millionaire overnight, but instead focusing on the time tested formulas and strategies that will give an investor the lowest chance of loss and the maximum chance of gain. I got the feeling that Jason is more likely to expose the truth about the market in a truthful way than to spurt some "get rick quick" hype just to make another sale at someone else's loss (like many of the famous "gurus" do). Anyone who reads this book and understands basic algebra could learn the tricks of the pros-- and more importantly, learn how to incorporate that type of thinking into your own personality so you can actually think like the pros do! I have already subscribed to his monthly newsletter (which is a phenomenal deal) and can't wait to give my investment portfolio a total makeover!
Thank you so much Jason, I can't express enough how grateful I am to have found your book. I am looking forward to writing back to you after I make my first million, which after reading this book I have realized I am able to make happen a lot sooner than I thought! I bought this book after reading some recommendations around the net, the price was certainly attractive. Not knowing what you are going to get, I don't often like to spend $50+ on some of the investment books that are out there.
I've done some trading in the past and was looking for information on shorting stocks (since in the current market everything is going down). The book covered the concept in brief, which did answer my questions about how shorting works. It is quite an easy read, and is not weighted down technical mumble jumbo. I was excited by some of the examples in the book, particularly the way the author clearly explains the work done by O'Shaughessy and his analysis of historical stock performance. When placed out clearly in a chart it is simply amazing to see the difference a couple of % can make when compounded over a number of years. The difference is millions of dollars! For the price of the book, you can't go wrong with this one. If you are trying to calculate the return on investment, the $10 spent on this book should return dividends for years to come! Jason has made this book as simple as possible and yet deep enough to get your cold feet cured. This book explain key points from the fundamental as well as technical approach in the stock market. And he always uses common sense when giving his reasons why his system will work or at the very least, will help preserve your money.
Jason system tends to be a bit fundamentalist when screening the stocks before finally he put them in his list. And he is Bill Miller technical twin when it is time to buy or sale the stock. From my rookie point of view, Jason is one of the best authors. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-04 04:05:53 EST)

This book, from what I've read. Which is more than half at this point. I can honestly say it's a great little book. It's simple, it's understandable and it has levels to how complex it can be. I originally started reading "All About Asset Allocation" another good book. Yet, boring, and taking up shelf space. Anyone new to stocks, or just wanting to read a stock book, this should be in your list. And, if you are buying this book to break into the stock market, my advice, play one of the fake money games before you play with real money.

I have an educational background but nothing related to finance or the stock market. This book very keenly taught me the basics of how to interpret balance sheets, income statements, and the stock market & investing vocabulary. After developing a foundation, Jason goes provides insights from the top names in the history of the investing industry, including their theories and practices.
I was very impressed with what I was able to take from the book as well as what I can use from the knowledge gained. I plan on employing several of his mid-cap & dividend strategies to my own portfolio, which began only 2 months ago. I commend Jason for writing such a easy to follow book for someone without a strong financial background. I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to get their feet wet in the stock market industry! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-03 03:51:01 EST)

Jason Kelly's book, The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing, is one of the best books on investing I have read to date. He studies how the masters have been succesful, then looks at the history of the market to see what has performed the best. Finally, he brings together all that research and gives you an intelligent way to invest in stocks. Very helpful and informative.

Mr. Kelly has done a remarkable job in writing a book that is an equally interesting read to novice as well as experienced investors. Beginning investors will find a thorough and concise method for creating a stock market portfolio as well as wonderful explanations and tools for fundamental research of companies. More seasoned investors will find a very neat chapter that summarizes the key points of investing strategies of such famous people as Buffet, Miller and Linch. This wonderful book is a must have companion in any serious investor's library.

What I liked best about Mr. Kelly's book was the accessibility of the text. It seems that in order to have an understanding of stocks and the stock market there are quite of few technical terms that need to be learned. Mr. Kelly introduces those terms with ease and elaborates on particular function to weave a coherent story that was easy to follow.
I have no background in business and would not consider myself business savvy at all. This text easily kept my attention and was quite inviting. I have already persuaded my friends to buy this book as well. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-18 04:36:19 EST)

Excellent for beginners. But it does not provide in details how to read financial reports and detect frauds. Along with this author needs to add detailed calculations of real life examples by comparing two well known financial results (e.g. Mcdonald vs burgerking or coke vs pepsi)

First, I would like to start off by explaining that I am a complete newbie when it comes to investing. I am an engineer by trade, and this is the first book I read in my quest to educate myself in the art of investing. I don't have the ability to comment on the effectiveness of Mr. Kelly's actual investment strategies that he explains in his book.
However, with that said, I am a very big fan of the book. I believe Jason Kelly is actually an English Major, and you can see that in his writing style. This book was very easy to read, and I was able to finish it very quickly. I was surprised at how easily I was able to stay up late reading a book about (*yawn*) investing. Also, his primer on stock/financial terms is great. Throughout the book, he explains a lot of the terminology involved with analyzing and picking stocks. Obviously, for a newbie, this was invaluable. His sections on the "Master Investors" provides a great initial view of some of the great financial minds. It is nice to be able get a quick overview of their books and ideas without having to read the actual 300+ page books by each one. If you are then hooked on the idea of investing, you can spend the time to read them more in depth and form your own opinions. Finally, Mr. Kelly outlines a basic strategy based on the beliefs from those Master Investors. Once again, I can not comment on the effectiveness of this strategy, but I liked it's simplicity and ability to automate it. Although I am a very cynical person, I look forward to trying out his strategy for myself. However, I also plan on reading more books to compare them to what he lays out in this book. Bottom-line, if you are just getting into investing and need a place to start, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It will keep you interested while you try to learn all the basics about stock market investing, and it provides a nice foundation of ideas from a wide-variety of investors. Maybe his strategy works great, maybe it doesn't, but it seems like an easy way to start to get your feet wet. Two ideas that Mr. Kelly mentions in his book (and I think they are applicable here) is that no one cares more about your money than you do, and you shouldn't let emotions control your decisions when it comes to stock market investing. In other words, it's up to you to evaluate the merits of his ideas through your own research. In the world of investing, I am sure most "experts" disagree on the right way to do it, but I greatly appreciate Mr. Kelly taking the time to explain the basics of investing, the ideas of some of his peers, and his ideas in a book that was a pleasure to read. Before I bought this book, I was investing in various different stocks and ETFs I heard about from other people. I heard about the whole 10-11% historic return of the S&P 500 and put most of my money into SPY. I also took some advice from the so called pundits and ended up losing a bit of money from that. I didn't have much of a strategy other than buying index funds and stocks that other people told me would be great buys.
That has changed after reading this book. In the beginning, Jason defines a lot of stock market terms that I was already mostly familiar with so that was review material. Then he goes over the strategies of history's most successful investors, and that was quite interesting. They share a lot of common strategies, and it's good to know that there's no magic bullet. Good portfolios are built off solid fundamentals and investing in all around money making companies. The most helpful part of the book was the section on building the list of stocks that make up your watch list. I pulled up a spreadsheet and entered in all the stocks I thought were strong along with a few I heard from other people and by looking at the numbers, I could see that some stocks were obviously better than others. I now have facts for choosing what to invest in rather than trusting what other people say. In addition, I've made some stock choices recently that have paid off because these companies continue to report solid growth and earnings. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have an investing strategy. For anyone who feels lost in the wild fluctuations of the market, this book will give you a solid foundation for building a strong portfolio that you'll be proud to own. I think this book is better for an educational purpose of the basics in stocks than a book to help invest. As you might see, by reading the chapter on the experts that one expert says buy low and sell high and anohter says buying high may be better. There is a lot of info that contradicts other info.
In other words, buying stocks is not a good plan and buying good low cost mutual funds by vanguard, or Dfa if you can afford Dfa are no brainer ways to invest. So while we do not want to hear this go grab "smart money" by Jane Bryant Quinn or "The boggleheads guide to investment strategy" you will be glad you did. As for the stock pickers its time to say goodbye to this hard worked and not very fruitful endevour. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-17 00:22:40 EST)

I bought this book to start learning stock market investing. I had read other books or should I say I have tried to read other books. This is a very easy book to read and understand. I bought a few more for members of my family for part of their Christmas presents one year. Investing does not need to be rocket science and with all the resources on the web now, with some knowledge from this book and resources out there for free. It is a great investment.

I just finished reading this book for the second time and I can't say enough about it. It walks you through systematically from having no investing knowledge to a solid foundation built on a structured plan of action based on research, not emotion.
Jason takes advice from the masters of investing and ties it into a very workable strategy. Get this book, you won't be dissappointed. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-05 14:53:56 EST)

I have read (or attempted to read) many personal finance books and I have to rate this book as probably the best book in terms of simplicity, knowledge and advice. I really enjoyed and learned a lot from this book alone. Mr. Kelly describes in simple terms the investment methods of the masters - Buffet, Graham, Fischer, Miller and O'Neal. His investment strategies in the book are also simple to follow even for a novice. You cannot find any other book in finance like this one. And best of all, it is also extremely reasonably priced.

Basic, straight-forward and very understandable. Excellent book. Wish more financial books were like this one.

This is a great guide that enables the reader to gather information and enter the complex world of investing in an intelligent, precise manner. The book takes you step by step and introduces strategies to create a permanent portfolio that all investors should possess before one ventures into the more volatile world of individual stock investing. I especially appreciated the blueprint Mr. Kelly has devised for the investor to research companies and compare 20 individual stocks for eventual analysis of data, and purchase of stocks. He adds humor and wit and has created an enjoyable, informative guide for the investor. I highly recommend this guide.

I read a lot of books, but I seem to only write reviews/comments on the super good one's or the time-n-money waster's. This book is a 5 star and nothing less. My new high-liter is about dry because I went crazy marking everything that I thought would be valuable to reference later on. Basic? Yes, this book is very basic and gives basic info and ideas. But sometimes it's good to go back to the basics to recheck and make sure you're headed in the direction that you intended to go in the first place. It's easy to get side-tracked and even lost at times in this insane market. Jason Kelly knows what he's talking about and with his simple permanent portfolio suggestions, you'll finally be able to keep a cool head when others panic; and they panic every day, win or lose. With his simple "long-term" strategy you'll still be able to trade on the side if that suits your fancy. But with the knowledge gained in this book you'll more likely have a better chance at picking winners yourself instead of relying on the media to tell you what the hottest thing on the street is, and by then you're already too late.
For 10 bucks you can't go wrong! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-25 15:23:07 EST)

I really enjoyed this book. It gives you most of the information you need to learn how to research, buy, and sell stocks. It tells you what to look for in a potential investment, and where to find the information. The writing style is pretty good so it is fairly easy to read. It doesn't go into technical analysis but most people wont need that. I think this book has everything the average investor will need.

Jason Kelly writes in a style that is very easy to understand. When you combine that with his knowledge of investing the end result is a book that is a must have. Jason walks the reader through all the basic investment lingo so that he/she can begin with a good grounding in the basics. He then presents the investing philosophies of some of the greatest investors ever so the reader can gain an understanding on how they think and approach the topic. After that he puts it altogether with his own theories and lays out a simple but proven strategy for both the layman and the more experienced investor. Jason also discusses exactly how to set up an account with a broker and recommends all sorts of investment journals including his own newsletter and website. I highly recommend this book.

It is not unusual to read the description and reviews of a book, and be disappointed in the product. That is not true with this book. It is just as described by the publisher and by Amazon, neither more nor less, and it is excellent. Designed to be read by those new to investing or those simply interested in the subject, it is also a very useful refresher for more seasoned investors.

This book is rich with valuable, real life information. Author has
taken well respected books and studies--and boiled them down to the key/essential facts and advice (great time saver). Provides behavior and strategies of stock market winners (eg Peter Lynch). Book reads well; if you go into a private place, you can read this publication rather quickly. I plan to try some of Author's ideas. Net, good read; provides reader with advice on how to improve his/her investing--and make a lot more money from the time and effort spent on learning the stock market basics, strategies and techniques. I'm a novice stock investor and I chose this book because of the consistent high ratings it's received here.
I was very happy with my choice. Jason's book is easy to understand, hits all of the basics, and he has a pleasant sense of humor which makes the book fun to read. Besides hitting all of the basics, this book is definitely affordable. It's a great first choice for learning how to invest in stocks. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-21 03:15:41 EST)

Personally, I didn't like this book. The reason I gave 2 stars rating is, there is good fundamental information in this book. If you browse through internet, you will surely find the same information with better and simpler explanation.
First few pages are good and going inside deeper, it is a kind of clumpsy. And worst thing, that i didn't like in this book is, strategies of great investors has been explained. You may say, 'Then, why I do say that this is not a good book ?', What is explained from those great people investment strategies is just the tip of an ice berg. What Buffet said, what philip said etc and what you should retain from them, is what is explained in this book. I feel, instead of just the theory, a mathematical approach of analysing a company would help beginners like you and me. I didn't find this as a neatest guide, for sure. If either the author and we knew what Buffet's complete strategy is, we don't need these books at all, i believe, author should have thrown some light on analysing the markets and after reading the book, if we could get at least an idea of what MIGHT happen, it would have been great because, even author is also one of the good investors. Great entry level book. Its that simple.
Kelly does a good job of easily explaining stock terms and what to look for. He explains terms, various stock theories and where to find the correct information. The examples are clever and very helpful. Relatively quick read however anticipate marking places to go back to in order to start building your portfolio. Overall, this is one of the best entry level stock market reads out there, I would recommend this to anyone! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-18 09:04:18 EST)

I had been searching for an easy to understand introduction to investing. After searching Amazon and reading many reviews I decided on Jason Kelly's "Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing". His book provided a very easy quick read and has gotten me interested in learning more on investing and stocks. After reading his book I am more intested in reasearching stocks, reading Kiplingers, etc. and the general business section of my local paper. My wife has even commented on my increased interest due to my extra reading and conversations about the subject.
Jason gives an overview of some of the masters in investing and also gives alot of good websites for further information and investing sites. I would highly recommend to anyone getting started with investing and stocks. Jason Kelly also offers a nice paid newsletter on his website [...] for a very low price that helps stay on top of recent events. For about $6/month (as of 2/28/2008) you can get a condensed version of current financial events and stocks that Jason invest in and watches. Yeah, I could get much of this myself for free but for the price it's nice to read a condensed newsletter from someone actively following the markets, plus it's in plain text so it's easy to read on mobile devices and prints nicely. Jason Kelly has got one of the best books out there on stock market investing. I am glad I chose Jason's book as one part of my stock market education. He gives you the "beef" of the matter and does not tease the reader with idle rhetoric.
I read Buffett, Lynch, O'neil and Jason Kelly. They are my instructors, and there are none better. If you buy this book, I believe you will be very grateful you did. There is no theory here, just great information that is ready to apply. This is a 2008 edition of this fine text. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-21 15:35:42 EST)

I am only half way through this book and all I can say is that so far the easy written style and coverage of finance is something I haven't seen before and I have read several publications in this area. Get this instead of any Dummy or Idiot books on investing/finance, it has great coverage, easy to read and the author is humerous to boot.

This is the 2008 revised edition of THE NEATEST LITTLE GUIDE TO STOCK MARKET INVESTING by Jason Kelly. I've been studying the stock market for over 30 years and have read countless books on basic investment strategies. This book is one of the best.
Even if you have little or no knowledge of stock trading, this book is written in simple, easy to understand terms. Yet there is actually enough detail here to be not just useful, but the foundation you need to get you starting in profitable investing. What Kelly offers here may not be produce the greatest results, but, especially for the beginning investor, this is solid investment strategy that maintains a low degree of risk. Over time, you may develop or learn other strategies that will replace some of what you learn here, but the core principles should stick with you throughout your investing career. I highly recommend this book. Seasoned traders will appreciate Kelly's strategies. Beginning traders need a good place to start, and I believe this is one of the best places around. I purchased several books on stock market investing so I could screen them for youngsters in the family. I wanted a book that wasn't to detailed and that gave a good overview. This book was by far the best of the 4 books on investing in the stock market that I screened for new, young investors. Kelly reviews the styles and methods used by a number of the market masters, which saves you from reading their books. He lists the common indicators used by all of the masters to select investments. Kelly gives solid ideas and promotes techniques that would keep a novice investor from getting burned. I purchased 6 books to give my nieces and nephews--I hope they read and absorb what Kelly writes.

I just finished reading the 2008 edition of this book and found it terrific. Some of the material was basic so I skipped it. But if someone is new to investing, this information would be worth its weight in gold to them.
Kelly gives the reader the investing strategies of several top investors. While they're different in some very substantial ways, it allows the reader to choose his own style or begin to develop one. For example, one famous investor keeps a stock no matter what. It can go very low and he'll buy even more. He says that by buying more, his average cost goes down. Which it does if you watch it in your own portfolio. Yet another investor sells when a stock goes down eight percent and another sells at fifteen percent loss. I think knowing when to sell is perhaps harder than knowing when to buy. I have to problems buying a stock and doing the research. It's knowing when to sell that gives me trouble. So I enjoyed reading about the different styles and trying to get a grip on it. The main thing, according the book, is to know in advance when you'll sell. Decide why you bought the stock in the first place. Then, when and if the stock no longer meets those criteria, sell. I had one small issue with the book and that's the fact it didn't deal much with ETFs. Of course, ETFs are stocks to a large extent. But one can't judge them by the same criteria in that some of the inner holdings may retain your criteria while one or two others may not. But this small, easy to read book covers it all. It's a full course in the stock market and is good for investors at all levels. There are very few investors who would not benefit from reading this book. Highly recommended. I decided several weeks ago that I wanted to slowly get into investing in the stock market on my own. I have done a lot of research since then and have been to countless forums where everyone seems to have their own opinion about where to start. I read a few glowing reviews for Peter Lynch's book One up on Wall Street: How to Use What You Already Know To Make Money in the Market, Miniature Edition and also saw several people recommending Jason Kelly's book. I received both in the mail last week and have been reading furiously. Lynch's book was a great quick read that you can finish in a half hour. Then I moved on to Jason Kelly's book.
If you are looking for a get-rich-quick book, this is not for you. Jason shows you how to build a portfolio for the long haul. He has several approaches which he backs up with theory and results. Essentially his approach boils down to this: If you are cool and collected and don't let emotions get in the way of good, sound investing, the market will work for you. The analysts and 'experts' all have their own agendas and you know what? They have access to the same information all of us have access to. There are so many sources of information out there, available to all of us for free or for a moderate price. There's nothing Wall Street analysts can tell us that we couldn't verify or disprove on our own. That's the beauty of his advice. You don't have to spend hours and hours of research in order to build your own portfolio. This book is perfect for anyone in my shoes. Curious but don't know where to start? Start on this page and click "Add to cart". You won't be let down. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-15 02:09:02 EST)

This book is just full of great stuff. It will benefit anyone who wishes to invest in stocks regardless of how much experience one may have in the stock market. The author talks indepth about well-known, successful investors and discusses each of their style and how they not only differ from eachother but also how they all share certain ideas. He also mentions what we should look for in stocks, how to go about doing the research, where and what to look for, and offers a comprehensive method in creating a healthy portfolio. This book is very easy to understand and is truly well organized. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to take part and in the challenge of stock market investing.
