| The Market Guys' Five Points for Trading Success: Identify, Pinpoint, Strike, Protect and Act! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The Market Guys' Five Points for Trading Success is based on a philosophy developed by Swope and Monte that focuses on the basics of trading. In fact, they developed their Five Points for Success to keep traders focused on the five points that really matter when it comes to trading: 1. Trade in the direction of the trend; 2. Establish a clear support level so you can determine where you will exit if the trade moves against you; 3. Be sure the pivot point is going up on the day you buy; 4. Calculate your maximum loss as 10f your account value; 5. Take action -- once you buy your stock, place your stop loss order below the support level. These five lessons were developed by Monte and Swope during their own years as traders, as well as through their years speaking to hundreds of thousands of traders (both amateur and professional) during seminars. In The Market Guys' Five Points for Trading Success, Monte and Swope touch upon some of the biggest issues in the field, including the emotional and psychological issues related to trading, technical analysis techniques, and how to find the right broker.

So many trading books focus on new tricks and an unfounded techniques to perfect your trading system. This book is a blueprint for Trading Success regardless of your Trading System. It's a very practical, common sense guide to helping you be aware of your emotions and implement a more disciplined approach to trading. I am a Financial Planner and active Trader and I think this book is quite possible the best trading book I have ever read! Their podcasts are great too!

The Market Guys have followed their own mantra in keeping this read simple. The book is very approachable and easily explains the process of trading. I have a background that emphasized company fundamentals and held little appreciation for technical analysis. The Market Guys have helped me to consider the opportunity of simple technical measures to include in my portfolio management. I find there philosophy on 'money' to be refreshing and enjoyable. Thanks Market Guys!

This book provides a good introduction to short-term stock trading. It doesn't go into great detail, but it provides what seems like solid, no-nonsense advice. The book isn't perfect (for example, some typos and a couple odd pages on good nutrition and exercise), but overall it's a good read.

I am new to investing and this book is a fantastic start to showing (with charts) of what to look for and how to start. I look forward to their new book as i would like to see real world examples such as. Here's a trend, we invested because of these signs, and here's how it played out. We lost money or made money.
Great book. A+, thanks guys. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-23 03:46:10 EST)

I had the good fortune of running into The Market Guys at a seminar recently where I purchased this book and a set of audio CD's. As a beginning trader, I found the information in the book to be invaluable in helping me design my trading plan and set proper expectations.
Rick and AJ really know their stuff and with the honesty, straight forward philosphy, strategy and tactics that this book contains it makes for a great primer for starting traders like myself as well as a great reference guide later on. I look forward to more books and tapes from these guys. Dave S. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-17 15:39:52 EST)

The Market Guys have given me a new approach to trading. I have been attempting to market trade for 20 years and have made significant mistakes. Wished it would have been available when I first started investing.
The tools of Risk management explained herein was a welcomed education. This book teaches several sound principals such as using a trading plan, asking yourself why you are making a specific trade, chart reading, long term investments, when to enter the market, patience, discipline, stock screening, buying and selling with the market, rather than against it, avoiding trading on emotion, etc. This is not a quick get rich approach, but sound practice. They state that if you can not beat an index fund, trading is not for you. I really liked the realistic approach presented here. This is the first down to earth reading that actually made good sense. The price of the book will in and of itself bring significant return to a new trader. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-17 15:39:52 EST)

This is a great book for new investors and for those that need to re-think their strategies. AJ and Rick take you back to the basics. They teach you about risk management as the fundamental requirement to be a successful trader. Their 1% rule and technique for deciding the appropriate order size was very enlightening and simple to understand. I have read other good books that cover technical analysis but this one gives a better overall view of the skills and mindset required to be a succesfull trader. Their key is read the charts react to the charts and trade with discipline.

The Market Guys do a great job in this book of spelling out the steps for successful investing. Key in their teachings, is the risk management tools that they provide. They really understand investing on a very high level, and we are lucky that they are willing to share their knowledge with us.

I have had the pleasure to meet with AJ, one-on-one, a number of years ago. At that time I had read 15-20 books on technical analysis and was completely confused on which tools I should use. At that time AJ introduced me to his "KISS - Keep It Super Simple" philosophy. I went from loses to gains because he was able to help remove the confusion about trading. He helped me understand even the professional stock traders don't know if a stock is going up or down, but if you have proper "Risk Management Tools" it doesn't matter. In the book, on page 243, last sentence of the first paragraph, "RISK IS A FACTOR THAT MUST BE RECOGNIZED AND PROPERLY MANAGED, NOT AVOIDED ENTIRELY." Risk management is key. All the technical analysis tools in the world won't help you if you don't have proper "Risk Management Tools" A beginner should start out with The Market Guy's book, then read 5-10 other books on technical analysis. After this education, take all that knowledge and come back to "The Market Guy's Five Points for Trading Success and read it again. This will help you understand how the Market Guy's, with their "KISS Philosophy" can teach you how to make money. I would also recommend subscribing to AJ's "Option Oracle". These are not just recommendations he gives to make money, these are his trades he uses in his personal account. Most "teachers" in stock trading don't trade their recommended stock picks. They only make money if you subscribe. Not the Market Guys, their personal money is on the line with yours! Congratulations to the Market Guys for putting all the information they teach at their seminars into their first book!!! Buy two and give one to a friend. I did.

I'm so stoked I bought this book. I'm already half way through in just 2 days and I'm getting a very clear picture of what I need to know to be successful in the trading industry. I had been reading another highly recommended technical analysis book that gave a million ways to analyze a chart, etc. but no clear path to follow or even a starting point after all that information. The Market Guys clearly define a step by step process in this book, starting with the most important step - establishing a clear trading plan and sticking to it, managing emotions, having a solid understanding of the best tools to analyze charts with, risk management and protecting your investment, and finally putting it all together and taking action. It's all here and they've kept it Super Simple! Bravo to AJ and Rick!!!

As a newbie to self directed investing (about 1 year), I have found there are a lot of "self proclaimed" gurus out there. These "gurus" use their book to sell you more stuff or hype some unproven "secret" they have discovered that you "must have". I have found most other books too complicated and heavy on the mathematics or too sales oriented trying to get me to buy more stuff about trading.
What I really LIKE about this book is the honesty of the authors with no sales pitch and no hype. They tell you trading has risk, they tell you the mistakes to avoid and they tell you with clarity and analogies that are easy to understand. While I'm reading everything I can right now, other books talk about MACD, %R, Stochastics, and a bunch of complicated indicators. While the authors cover these technical studies, Rick and AJ stress the importance of keeping it super simple (KISS). It was actually refreshing to read this book and get some common sense trading advice. Is the book too simple? I don't think so....it's not "basic" level information, more like the wisdom of their experiences. I know this might sound like an over-the-top review of the book and I don't have any relationship with the authors. I just really loved this book and I have read it twice. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for sound advice without all the complicated mathematics or sales hype that makes your head spin. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-01 20:01:58 EST)

The book is a must for anyone starting to learn trading. It clearly and without ballast discusses five super simple steps for successful trading. It is easy to understand and presents you with many real situation examples. In my opinion it is best for learning end-of-the-day swing trading and also gives you great fundamentals for options trading. I find chapters about defining trends and pivot points especially valuable. Great book for any novice or professional.

AJ Monte and Rick Swope's book 'The Market Guys' Five Points for Trading Success' provides an excellent foundation into trading and investing, and how to profit from these activities. It is an interesting and enjoyable read, as well as a good primer on how to approach this subject. I found the actual personal stories from their past investment and trading lives to be enlightening. Their writing style is lively and I found myself smiling time and time again at the insights they provided into investing principles. This is a good book that is worth spending time with. I know I shall read it several times.

After viewing numerous Market Guys' webinars, I looked forward to reading their book.
It did not disappoint. From their emphasis on risk management to their KISS (keep it super simple) approach, it has helped me to become a more disciplined trader. I highly recommend this book to all beginners as well as traders who wish to re-evaluate their trading style. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-27 00:55:59 EST)

An excellent book which provides confidence in trading by identifying methodologies for limiting losses and maximising gains. The first book I've found which explains options trading so simply that even my kids understand the concept! Written to help people in an easily readable and enjoyable style by two guys who are clearly open, sincere and honest in what they are doing. I recommend you buy the book and send copies to your friends and family as presents as well - rest assured they'll thank you for it even if they haven't thought of trading yet - it will give them a lot of worthwhile things to think about!

If this book were on my night stand in 2002 instead of 2008, I would have been profiting in the latest five year bull run instead of regretting the trial and error methods that led to the predictible losses and accidental gains which left me on the short end of success much of the time.
I now know that investing and trading are not about how hard you work at making the right choices, but how well you manage the risks that encompass the choices you make. AJ and Rick are teaching me the right way to make choices, but more importantly I'm learning to manage the choices I make. This book is not a read once and be rich. It is a read often and be smart. Thank you AJ and Rick. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-27 00:55:59 EST)

This tutorial has both made a lot of money for me and saved a lot of money for me. What I like most about this book, aside from making money, is how risk mitigation is taught. If a person follows the advice on risk mitigation, he/she will lose very little. 1% of their account. You can lose on several trades and gain on a few trades and come out ahead.

There are no easy "get rich schemes" to profitable investing. It requires due diligence and common sense principles. Rick and A.J.'s book," Five Points to Trading Success" will give you a world of experience gained by them on Wall Street over the past 25 years. Of particular note is advice on how and when to "take your losses", protect your positions, and heaven forbid, partner with your spouse on investment decisions. It's all about risk and risk assessment, technical analysis, and market psycology. A must for the serious investor.

Although I have not finished the whole book, I have found it very interesting and highly informative. As a newbie to trading this book can help put you in the right direction from the beginning. As an experienced trader it should help one rid themselves of bad habits and simplify their trading program. Based on what I have read I have already changed some of the precepts I had about trading. Being able to accept a loss and divorce your stock is the biggest lesson learned so far. Terminology and in depth explanations of technical indicators are covered in depth.
This is great book and my hat is off to the TMG team. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-16 22:04:47 EST)

I ordered this book months before it was released and finished it within a week of it's release date. This is a terrific book if you are new to trading or have been trading for a while and need to enhance your trading skills. The authors understand how confusing the markets can be especially in light of the recent levels of velocity. They keep their points simple enough so that they will be understood by readers who have yet to make their first trade yet intriguing enough to capture the attention of seasoned traders. The Market Guys make it clear that the markets reward the patient and disciplined trader. The best way to achieve these two traits is through reading and self-education. One of the most valuable lessons I learned can be found in Chapter 12, "Managing Risk: Learning to Lose Money the Right Way". Everyone looses money in the market but if you do not know how to effectively manage your losses you won't have the capital needed to continue the pursuit of your fiscal objectives. If you have been trading for awhile but have yet to purchase your first options contract then chapters 10 and 11 is for you. Chapter 5 is a must read for everyone, "10 Common Mistakes Made by Traders (and How to Avoid Them!)" If you are wondering if this book is worth the $30 price just think about how much money you lost on your last trade. Chances are the $30 price represents only a fraction of the money you lost on your last trade. Now imagine how much money you will save by better managing your losses after reading this book! Some of you may not have heard about The Market Guys before but I am sure that everyone has heard and probably seen the movie "Trading Places" (1983) staring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. What you may not know is the producers of this movie hired The Market Guys to educate the actors in how the markets work and how to portrait their understanding of the markets in the movie. If the smart money in Hollywood is willing to pay big dollars to get their advice I am sure you will agree that the book is worth the $30 price. Happy trading!

The Market Guys come through on their promise to Keep It Super Simple. They demystify trading stocks. The biggest benefit I have taken away so far is to incorporate their advice on managing my risk by making sure I don't expose more than 1% of my trading account on any one trade by using stop loss orders, managing my position size, and identifying support levels. Just minimizing my losses alone will tremendously increase my rate of return. Even when the market goes down and I lose some money, I love looking at a comparison of my account versus the indexes and seeing my account positions stop out and limit my loss, while the market continues to tank. This book and the other products the Market Guys come out with give me the confidence to wade into the water as a first time stock trader.
