Electric Circuits (8th Edition)

Electric Circuits, Eighth Edition features a new design,a four-color format, and 80% of chapter problems have been updated. In the midst of these changes, the book retains the goals that have made it a best-seller: 1) To build an understanding of concepts and ideas explicitly in terms of previous learning; 2) To emphasize the relationship between conceptual understanding and problem solving approaches; 3) To provide readers with a strong foundation of engineering practices. Chapter topics include Circuit Variables; Circuit Elements; Simple Resistive Circuits; Techniques of Circuit Analysis; The Operational Amplifier; Inductors, Capacitors, and Mutual Inductance; Response of First-Order RL and RC Circuits; Natural and Step Responses of RLC Circuits; Sinusoidal Steady-State Analysis; and more. For anyone interested in circuit analysis.

This is a classic work delivered in a top-notch modern layout, with very clear organization and focus. The first edition was written before the modern-day era of sidebars, extra features, and time-consuming case studies. The eigth edition does have some added extra-material (like chapter openers), but not to the extent that a clear-cut presentation is jeopardized. In particular, this sets it apart from Alexander/Sadiku (3/ed.).

It also has a more modern and efficient feel to it than Dorf/Svaboda, which is also a classic, albeit one to be steered clear of; it has not been modernized like Nilsson's book and was less clearly written from the start.

I enyojed Nilsson/Riedel's narrative, the in-chapter excersices (with answers and with suggested end-of-chapter problems), and the problems (many with answers). With Nilsson, you know your learning is in the hands of an athorative educator.

(Hide Review...)  OK text
Reviewer Permalink
This text is alright, but it does assume prior knowledge of circuits. The exercise problems are way more difficult than any of the examples in the text and not all of the answers are provided in the back of the book. Also, (VERY IMPORTANT) this ISBN does NOT include the PSpice manual that is usually required for a basic circuits course.

(Hide Review...)  Good book for University Class

I bought this book for a undergraduate University course. The book is extremely thorough in the topics discussed and has plenty of examples. My only complaint is not having all the answer values in the back of the book, this makes checking my own answers diffcult.

(Hide Review...)  Seems good so far
Reviewer Permalink
I'm only 4 chapters into this book, but so far i like it pretty well. It seems more readable than other physics texts ive had. It seems like the biggest complaint ive read about is it being too hard, or not having answers. I have every answer in the book, since it comes with p-spice and i can check them. As far as being more difficult than the examples, that seems to be the case in any physics course ive taken, and i've just gotten used to it i guess. I suppose the fact that i have a great teacher helps a lot, but i definitely dont think this book is as terrible as everybody on here is saying. Just a quick word to the post "a stinker", we were assigned problem 2.11, and using p=IV and V=IR, its a simple problem.

(Hide Review...)  Well organized

The book is organized very well. It's clear, uses appropriate boxes/highlighting, and succinct. It was more explanatory than my teacher was most of the time. Doesn't shirk from doing the math, but not too math-based.

(Hide Review...)  Very Bad Book
Reviewer Permalink
I'm currently an engineering student and have seen my fair share of technical textbooks. This is one of the worst textbooks I've come across. There are no good examples in the books (the only examples are missing complete solutions) and the chapters are worked through with very simple theoretical circuits with nothing complex to base your understanding off of. The authors also completely neglect units when making calculations, which is a huge problem when dealing with this kind of material. they simply make a calculation and throw in a unit onto the answer at the end.

the major problem with this book is the lack of SOLVED EXAMPLE PROBLEMS. a textbook is no good without step by step explained applications.

overall, this book is a bad excuse for a textbook. if you can, stay as far away from it as possible.

(Hide Review...)  Great Book for EE's
Reviewer Permalink
I have many circuit textbooks and references but this is by far my favorite one. I just finished a semester of AC circuits using Dorf and Svoboda's "Intro to Circuits" textbook and it was really bad compared to this one. Granite, this book has a lot more info on two port networks and AC systems than the Dorf book, but that isn't a good enough excuse. The chapters are a fairly interesting read, and there are plenty of example problems. The material can be a bit challenging, but that's what makes it fun. I would definitely recommend for any and all electrical engineer's!

(Hide Review...)  This is a review of the 7th edition
Reviewer Permalink
This is a review of the SEVENTH edition of "Electric Circuits" by Nilsson & Riedel. Amazon generally keeps reviews of previous editions combined with later editions and that can be quite confusing. For example, many of these reviews make a complaint that the book has no answers in the back. That may have been true in their edition, but for this, simply turn to Appendix G page 939 and many answers are provided for selected problems. The authors state that all text and problems in this edition have been triple checked for accuracy.

The student should come to this book with some familiarity with integral and differential calculus and an elementary course in physics. That will carry you through the first twelve chapters. For the last six chapters you will also need to have some facility with differential equations.

I found the book to be clearly written and the quantity of problems provided to be quite useful and helpful. It is by working with the material being learned that one gains facility and it sticks in the memory more permanently. Each chapter is laid out clearly with boxes of extra material as well as Assessing Objectives that help the student know if they have command of the principles being discussed. There is also a chapter summary and a series of problems. The book provides something like 1,000 problems for the student. Good illustrations, diagrams, and pictures to illustrate the text.

The book also comes with a limited student version of a commercial circuit design software package called PSpice using ORCAD 9.2. The manual says that the software is more menu driven and requires less programming than previous versions.

This is a very solid resource for students to use in coursework or for someone to work through on their own.

(Hide Review...)  A book that does not work
Reviewer Permalink
If you are new to circuits, and don't have an amazing instructor, this book will make you work for hours just to finish a few problems in the exercises. The examples in the book are ridiculous, cause they are so easy. But wait till you get to the exercises, you will know. It is true, if you can learn to do the harder problems, easier ones will be no factor. But you NEED to learn first, and this book is in no way a self- teaching book. The ability of the writers to communicate with the readers is almost non existent here.
