BRS Physiology (Board Review Series)

Thoroughly updated for its Fourth Edition, BRS Physiology is an excellent aid for students preparing for the USMLE Step 1. The book concisely reviews key physiological principles and includes clinical correlations throughout to emphasize connections between basic physiology and clinical medicine. Numerous illustrations, tables, and flow charts help students visualize material quickly and aid in long-term retention. End-of-chapter USMLE-style questions and a comprehensive end-of-book exam test the student's problem-solving skills, and clearly explained answers guide the student through the correct steps in reasoning. This edition features increased coverage of pathophysiology, new questions, and a new two-color design and artwork.

I would just like to say that this sender wasted no time and I received the book promplty within the week that i ordered it. Also, the book was just as they promised it would be. Thank you very much. I have asked and paid extra for items to be expedited before and they still took forever.

For those who are wondering if the BRS Physiology book is worth it: IT DEFINITELY IS!!! I am very happy that I purchased it and know that I will be using it for decades... yes I said decades.

This book is awesome, but I can still criticize it. I read it along with the little Guyton book, and used it as a main source a couple of days before the NBME, which we took at the end of our physiology class in medical school. I read the entire book in two days, and understood it all! It is a fast dirty way to study physiology that hits all the necessary points. However, it has its down points. The book is in bullet point format all the time. It became a little degrading to see point after point, which is why I used the pocket Guyton book. Guytons pocket book is another source that I highly recommend because it explains rather than bullet points, and if the bullet points in this book become too much for you, try pocket Guyton. Also, the sections of this book may not follow your class lecture. It can be unpleasant to search for what your studying. If the book had sections smaller than 30 pages it would help. Another word of warning, this book is build for medical school. This book is not intended as a source for PhD work, etc. However, if you are in med school, this is a necessary evil!

The book had a lot of concepts that really helped with my learning of physio throughout the course and later with prepping for the physio shelf exam. My only beef with the content was with the impertinent discussions of molecular similarities between some hormones, but overall, I was pretty satisfied with the book.

I think this is the best BRS there is. I used this book for course exam prep as well as board review. It is a great tool to highlight important concepts, and it explains things in a simple and effective way with the right amount of information.

I decided to purchase this book as a supplement to the textbook we use in class. You know, you read the complicated textbook and then the supplement next. Not so any longer. This guide gets right to the point. Reading it before class has facilitated my understanding of lectures and comprehension of the required readings.
You don't have to be a medical student to derive value out of this book. I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me.

i really like the author's clear explanations and organization of the book. this is basically an outline of her physiology textbook, which is also great. i only wish that brs physiology had more color charts/diagrams/images. for the cost of the book, i think it's a reasonable request.

This is a great review book. It outlines the important concepts in neurophysiology, cardiology, respiratory and renal physiology. The outline goes straight to the point, the tables are nicely organized to pick up the simmilarities and/or differences, and the diagrams are excellent to understand concepts.

Great to use during 1st and 2nd year in supplement to your medschool classes. My boards will be this summer, but this book is widely regarded as the gold standard for physiology preparation for the USMLE/COMLEX step 1..This book is also a condensed version of the bigger physiology boook by costanzo (same author) so if you dont understand anything in the BRS, you should refer to the bigger Costanzo book. I highly recommend at least the BRS for boards.

Dr. Costanzo is definitely a great teacher. This book has really helped me out a lot, I've even recommended to all my friends who are planning to go to medical school. The online feature is a great companion, and for the price, nothing beats it! If you are a first time physiology student, I recommend this as a supplement text.

Reviewer Permalink
I love the BRS because it concisely covers every topic, is very reader friendly, and does not take too much time.

I am giving it four stars because I wish I had discovered Costanzo's other physiology book much earlier. BRS is too condensed for the information to go to your long term memory. Costanzo's other book has much more information and I wish I had gotten that along with BRS.

This book is seriously getting me through physiology. Not a replacement for a textbook (some of the concepts aren't explained, just listed), but a great review before the test. Reading through the chapter makes everything seem so much clearer! And the questions at the end of the chapter are a great way to study. I haven't taken the boards yet, but I'm sure this book will be helpful for them!

I've so far just been using this to review the basics of physiology in preparation for tests. It's great for helping to establish a skeleton for learning. You may need to look up some finer details, but the vast majority of what you need is right here.

Really helps you pick out the things you MUST KNOW. Great tables.

Doesn't have enough substance or diagrams for renal physio. It also doesn't cover clotting/coagulation (please correct me if i'm wrong), so make sure you get that info elsewhere...

This is one of the best medical physiology review books that I've seen. Others people on Amazon have extensively reviewed this book, so I'll use the following format for review:

Clarity: 5/5- It was easy to read and understand.
Brevity: 5/5- Used few words without sacrificing clarity.
Depth: 3/5- If you need more depth read her other book published by Saunders.
Breadth: 4/5- Not as comprehensive as could be, but good for a review.
Illustration quality: 4/5- I would have preferred a little more illustrations, however, again, can't ask too much from a review book.

Great book to review physiology once you've taken the course and read a physiology textbook. Not enough detail to rely on for passing a medical school physiology course (so don't skip the textbook and just buy the BRS!!).
