Sign with Your Baby Complete Learning Kit will enable you to communicate at new levels with your baby long before she can speak. This comprehensive package of book, video, and reference guide shows how simple gestures can communicate ideas like "I'm hungry" or "help me." Caregivers grasp baby's needs immediately rather than learn through trial and error. Dr. Joseph Garcia has designed the system so it's not necessary to learn an entire new language, although it also provides a terrific start in American Sign Language for a hearing-impaired child. A fascinating introduction delves into the development of language in children and uses informative line drawings to demonstrate over 150 hand signs for all kinds of actions and nouns. The accompanying video provides practical tips for getting started, some insight into the hows and whys of this method from Dr. Burton White (director of the Center for Parent Education), and inspiring sights of young babies signing effectively with their caregivers. The laminated quick-reference guide lists some of the most common words in any parent's day: cookie, no, and up are but a few. Garcia's clear, concise methods make learning a breeze, and caregivers gain outstanding new abilities to give the best possible care for the babies entrusted to them. --Jill Lightner

This product was helpful in explaining how to start teaching my baby sign language. If I had it to do over again I would probably just get a cheaper book, because I'm not sure this was worth the extra expense. All I really need now is something to show me how to do the signs, and I found that for free online. The author does have an attractive mullet on the DVD though.

Sign with your Baby is a great package. Here on Amazon the whole deal, book, laminated card, and DVD is only 30 dollars. What a great deal.
We started a little late with our daughter. We got this product when she was 7 and a half months. It was only a couple of days before she started doing her version of the more sign. We wish would have gotten this product sooner, as it is a great product. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-26 02:09:03 EST)

I require this product for everyone who takes my Baby Sign Language Classes in Houston, Texas and love it. It has great stories, easy instruction and is a fantastic product. The book is easy reading...takes about an hour to read and has tons of vocabulary in the back. The video is about 30 minutes of instruction then has Dr. Garcia modeling all the signs. I love how you can easily find the information you want on the DVD and book. The Quick Reference Guide is great for baby sitters, grandma, and just to keep track of what my children know. I really do recommend this to everyone!

What an amazing product!! For parents who are new to signing with your baby, the video is excellent in that it gives you the opportunity to see little ones signing. I often feel that 'seeing is believing', so it's very motivational to watch other babies signing. Several educators in the video also give their support and validate the research behind Signing with your Baby (R). It's also a great motivation to hear success stories from some parents of signing babies.
The book is helpful in teaching you when and how to start incorporating signs with your little one. I love the ideas that Dr. Garcia gives for teaching signs along with games and everyday activities. There's also a dictionary at the back of the book to help learn signs, along with the same dictionary shown to you by Dr. Garcia at the end of the video. I would also highly recommend Sign2Me's flash card sets for you and your baby to supplement the dictionaries in the book and video. The dictionary in the book is helpful for parents, but your little ones will benefit more from the flash cards because of the illustrations on the front of the card (and the parent sees the sign itself on the back). I always use the Sign with your Baby(R) video in the beginning of the baby sign language classes I teach in Boiling Springs, SC. It really gets the parents excited about learning signs with their little ones. Signing with your little one is one of the best decisions you will ever make as a parent. Being able to communicate with your child often months before they can speak is phenomenal. I can't tell you how exciting it is to see your child communicate with you! Our daughter made her first sign at 5 months old. She is now 14 months old, with 10 words and over 40 signs. Imagine all that we would have missed out on for so many months before she started talking! Once when she was 9 months old, after turning off the radio, she signed 'more music'. How amazing it is to know at such a young age what your child wants and needs! This is a fantastic program to get you started on your signing journey! If you take the time to learn the signs and implement signing with your child's daily activities, this will be a purchase you will not regret! Happy signing! I use this product when I teach classes. Parents love recording dates of knowledge of a word by their baby for childcare & relative information.

Some people may think it is odd I would benefit from this program being that I am already fluent in American Sign Language. With my first child I did not utilize any resources while teaching her to sign and while she picked up a large vocabulary we had some pitfalls along the way. Plus I did not even realize all the different scenarios in which to provide new signs for my daughter. This time around with my son I've seen a difference in teaching him useful signs earlier than I would have thought he could understand their meaning, such as "help" and "hot". The years of research and knowledge provided in this complete kit definately benefits parents just starting out with signing to their baby/toddler. Parents in my workshops and classes using this kit have also stated it has made a great impact on their lives. Sign4Baby .... everyone should do it!

I am a sign language interpreter and I teach baby sign and also tutor families who have children who need sign to communicate more easily. I did lots of research before I decided what program to use and picked SIGN with your BABY. The signs used in the book are all ASL signs which is very important! Dr. Garcia has a great way of showing and explaining how sign language helps infants and toddlers with their language development.

I've heard a lot about the benefits of signing with your child. After researching which book to choose, I chose this one. I liked it because it uses ASL and not signs that are made up like some other books teach. The book can be a bit dry at times, but it gives a good overview of why signing is beneficial and how to implement signing into everyday life and make it fun for both you and your baby. There are also lots of signs shown at the end of the book that are great for referencing.

I purchased this kit about two years ago for my newborn. My husband and I worked with her for a few months and one day she started signing. It was the most amazing thing I had ever experienced. Her speaking skills developed faster than the average child. I would highly recommend this product. Now I purchase this kit for baby showers. It makes a wonderful gift.

I've read the book and watched the DVD. The book is extremely easy to read and the DVD a fast watch. The kit also has a handy reference guide that is good for a quick go-to. The ideas for applying the signs and for communicating with your baby are good. It is helpful to learn how a baby's signing transitions as they age and to watch other families success with signing. I have been signing with my infant for 2 months now and applying what I learned using this kit. I do recommend this product and plan to continue with this line when we need to move on from this kit.

This is a great tool for parents to have. With this tool you will find that babies can talk!! The resources in the kit are many and are very helpful. The testimonies on the video alone are eye-opening. I love the wipe-off chart that can be shared with others who have interaction with your baby. With the chart, the signs your baby will use can be understood by all. You and your child will enjoy this great product. Thank you Mr. Joseph Garcia for proving that babies can communicate their needs effectively!

The book and video are helpful in getting started, but the video is so old and outdated, it's almost unbearable to watch. But, the information and signs are solid. Would have liked a little more information about the process of introducing signs. He focuses on the "eat", "more" and "milk" so much, but doesn't really show you how to use some of the others. It is interesting to see the kids communicate though.

I am really glad I purchased this set for the following reasons:
EASY READ -I read the entire book during one of my son's naps VERY HELPFUL -what, when, and how to teach your baby ASL OFFERED SOME INSIGHT - taught me things about language development that I never knew and found very helpful when deciding how to intoduce signs to my child (and even about how to interact verbally) GREAT DVD - anwered any additional questions I had after reading the book (for example, how do I make the sign for diaper change, etc.) The instructional pictures are fantastic, but I think that there are always a few signs that are better shown in action. It was also great to see babies doing the signs that I am now teaching my child. Makes you realize how great signing with your child can be! "REAL" SIGNS - I ended up using this set over "Baby Signs" because it follows ASL. I figure, if you are going to introduce a new language to your child it might as well be universal. I was also happy that unlike Baby Signs, this was accompanied by an instructional DVD. Listen to all the great reviews like I did! Buy the set! You will be happy you did! This is a must have for parents. At six months, my son is able to sign to me when he wants milk. He can recognize many other signs when I sign them.
The video has a section that will allow you to jump to any of the words so you can see how they are signed. This is a great supplement to the printed signs. This is a great way to increase the communication with your loved one that cannot speak words yet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-22 08:06:05 EST)

This set has many forms of materials included - the quick-view card helpful for babysitters and grandparents, the DVD to fully explain the theory behind sign-language as well as properly demonstrate the motions of sign-language, and a book which covers many of the same points on theory of sign-language as the DVD. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and after only 1 showing we both picked up many signs to be able to use with our little one.

We bought Garcia's DVD for our grandson at about 4 months of age. Signs helped him express his needs and even feelings with a minimum of fussing. He is now almost 3 and very verbal & advanced. It may be that he's just a great kid, but we believe signing with babies really works.

I like the sign language. It was pretty great when our 9 month old told me he wanted milk the first time! I don't think you need the video though. You can just start repeating certain signs on your own. Just repeat them a lot and be consistent.
The problem we had is that we couldn't get our daycare providers to use the signs. So it seemed like any progress we made got undone by them. He would use the signs with them but they wouldn't recognize it. I can only imagine how that must have been frustrating and confusing for him. So make sure everyone around him is going to use the signs before you start teaching them. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-11 04:27:11 EST)

I started at 7 months, he picked up the first sign at about 10 months, and the rest came around 1 yr. The video/book combination is good because the video shows you the signs and the book is handy for a quick reference.
Drawbacks: 1. I felt like much of the video was still trying to sell me on the idea of doing sign with my baby. It could focus less on marketing and present the information more efficiently. 2. The sign vocabulary is limited to the first stage of sign language learning only. It could be improved by including more vocabulary. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-22 08:06:06 EST)

I have compared this program with other sign language programs, and it seems to be the best one I have come across so far. At one point, I taught another baby sign language course, whose name I will not mention. The program's signs did not always come close to actual sign language, which I found was offensive to the deaf community. Joseph Garcia's program follows actual signs from ASL, and the program is easy enough to learn if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. I would definitely recommend this baby sign language program for other mothers - the resources are varied - book, DVD, quick reference guide - it's the best out there!!

I bought this and started introducing it to my daughter as soon as she was brought home from the hospital. Each time I would give her her milk bottle I would do the sign for milk. She signed for milk at age 6 months old. Before she turned a year old, she did the sign for change (the diaper), then it went on and on. Now I kinda kick my butt for teaching her how to do the sign language when she was a baby because she is super articulate for her age and just recently she successfully completed transitional math for kindergarteners-1st graders at age 3.

Just watching the DVD has given me enough to start signing with my 11 month old. I still need to read the book, but it's easy to learn just by watching the DVD. I really like how it shows all these babies doing the signs. These parents' lives seem so much easier because they can communicate with their babies. We've been doing the signs for about a month now and I think he's doing the sign for "more" and he recognizes the sign for "brush teeth" because that's his favorite part of the day. He gets a huge grin on his face when I do it because he knows what's coming up.

The book and the DVD give you the same information. The DVD's a little outdated and looks like it was made in the 80's. But the information is good. But I do think you can get the same information from less expensive DVDs or books...

im not sure if my admiration for this kit stems from the fact that i love the idea of signing with baby or because this kit is that good.
either way, the dvd is more than enough if you can get it on its own. I dont advise to buy the book alone since seeing the instructor acutally making the signs is best, also most of the ideas in the book are repeated on the dvd. either way, its a really helpful kit.. teaching baby to sign is fun and extremely rewarding to both of you. This combo was really useful! Make sure you get a DVD or VHS tape. Watching babies doing signs is what you need to understand how the signs work. After that, you can pretty much do without the book.
We started teaching my daughter signs when she was 7 months old. By her first birthday, she could sign "cookie" very clearly. Then she started adding more signs to her vocabulary. She uses signs to say "cookie", "more", "water/eat" (she uses the same sign for both), "bye", "hi", "book", "bunny", "no", "over /no more", "shoe" and some other words. She does not always use the standard signs, she modifies them or makes up her own. I have wonderful anecdotes on my communication with her. I'll share three with you: * When she started crawling, she was going for a door wedge. She sat, looked at us, made the "no" sign a couple of times, and then went ahead and picked up the wedge. To us, the message was clear: "I know I am not supposed to touch it, but I'm going to, anyway". It was priceless. * I was turning around with her in my arms. Her mom said "Stop, you are scaring her". So I stopped, and my daughter immediately made the "more" sign. She was clearly enjoying the ride. * I was reading to her in bed. I made the "over/no more" sign, and she replied "more" followed by "book". I had to keep reading. Now, she is one year and seven months old, and she communicates very clearly. She is saying some words out loud now, but still uses the signs when she feels like it. If we can't see her, she will speak, or she will combine signs and sounds to get what she wants. We didn't go all out on forcing our two kids to learn sign language, but we get them to learn a large number of simple words that made every day living a lot easier. Fewer tantrums when they can let you know what they are thinking. Never too early to start, but don't expect results till 1 yr. Video and quick reference card were used more than the book. Also, talk about impressing the grandparents...

I was given this kit as a baby shower gift. I had been introduced to signing with babies before so I was familiar with the concept. I found Garcia's methods of using only strict ASL signs too difficult for me and my baby. I did research and found the Baby Signs Program and it worked great for us. The signs are more simple, (I didn't have to make any up, they have hundreds on their dvd dictionary!) and they have great products to go along with their kit like board books and dvd's for the baby. They also have classes for parents and play classes for babies and parents which are a lot of fun. As a result of signing and the classes and everything, my baby began talking very early and has been light-years ahead in her verbal and cognitive development ever since. That is what we were looking for, communication at an early age to reduce her frustration, and all of the other benefits that go along with that early communication--mainly a smart, happy baby!!! If she wants to learn ASL when she is older and developmentally capable, then I will see to it that she is taught by a professional, rather than by me who is trying to learn it from a book!!! Baby Signs worked much better for us and we were incredibly happy with the results!

This kit is excellent! My daughter is 20 months old and she can sign about 90 signs! She communicates so well with us that she does not ever cry or whine for things and she understands us so well! This kit has all that you need to get started signing with babies! The dvd even has Joseph Garcia signing so you can see how the signs are made. You can also go to the specific word that you would like to see how to sign such as BABY. The laminated guide is great too-you can carry it in the diaper bag or let Grandma borrow it! I buy this for all of my friends that are expecting!

My daughter uses a few signs.. and it does help at times, but I wish they had an easier to use dictionary of signs...a DVD would be great and easy to make that dictionary on. But I love the quick reference card. We made a copy and have it up on our fridge for easy use.
I have to admit.. I am not as dedicated to the process as they say you should be... but we get enough signing in to get our basic need for sign met. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-20 02:45:10 EST)

This is one book i would recommend to all who plan to use sign language with their babies. It gave specific instructions on how to start (i.e., with milk, more and eat) and what you can expect your child to learn. I like that it showed how babies make their first signs (not how adults do them) since we saw all of it with our daughter.
I believe this book is really effective as long as you are also willing to learn. We started teaching our daughter at 7 months and she started signing at 9 months. By 10 months she can use 12 signs and by 13 months she is now able to use 30 signs!!! Need I say more?!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-10 22:44:09 EST)

I took a class with my son for baby signing. This kit helped me give a breif synopsis to my older son and husband. The entire kit is clear, concise and easy to follow. There were important concepts that were not discussed even in the class we took. I highly recommend!

Communication between babies and their parents is more complex than Indian sign language. Parents are often highly delusional in projecting what they want to see and do on their kids. This is a major case in point. Our baby had two or three "signs" it used to indicate fear, etc., but quickly she passed on to verbal language. We spent about two weeks investigating "baby sign language" and realized its futilty. BTW, we're both child professionals. Baby signing is akin to mood rings.

I have a baby boy and I have been signing with him. I like this kit because it has a little of everything in it. I like being able to communicate with my son. He now signs back and it is amazing. My only problem was that I needed more signs. I looked through the products on Amazon.com and I found a book called "Teach Your Tot to Sign" from Stacy Thompson. It has 500 signs in it and they are so easy to understand. I can take it with me in my diaper bag and if my son needs to know what the sign for something is like the bird that we saw in the Target parking lot, I can pull it out and look the sign up then and there. I suggest that you purchase the sign with your baby book and the teach your tot to sign book together. They compliment eachother well. Once your baby starts to sign, you will enjoy it so very much.

I think I agree with another review I found on this site (which I should have gone with) that the Signing Times DVD is much better. I've yet to use the quick guide or see the dvd. I did read the book and it's ok, but nothing new if you've read the research on the web about baby signing.

We're only at the beginning stages of sign language with our child, so I can't say for sure how the end result will turn out-- but for now, we are really excited with it. The concept is fabulous. We ordered the book and CD and started signing a few words to our child at 6 months of age. A month and a half later, there is definite recognition of these signs. (i.e. eat, milk, drink, up)The book is pretty easy to follow, and the signs are described in the book as well as shown on the DVD. Our child has already made a gesture that would mean "up," but we're not sure whether it's just a coincidence at this point. Either way, it's educational material that could really come in handy. (no pun intended)

We purchased this for our 12 month old daughter. Instead of wasted time trying to figure out why she's upset or what she wants, she can tell us with her hands..we love it!
The video is a good introduction. We use the quick reference guide all the time..it's very useful. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-18 04:21:05 EST)

I am so glad that I got this book and I think that my daughter is too! The book is direct and easy to use adn offers some really helpful suggestions on introducing signs. I can tell that it eases her frusteration when she can tell me what she wants,is thinking, etc.

It is great how babies absorb this while you play with them.

Great, user friendly program. The DVD is incredibly helpful and the quick reference guide a must have! After reading the book, watching the DVD, and using the quick reference guide, I am much more confident in my ability to use ASL signs to communicate with my son. He is only 6 months old, so we just started using signs with him about a month ago.
The reason I didn't give this program 4 stars is I came across another book, "Signing Smart with Babies and Toddlers", that provides more practical/hands on advice and believe that these two resources used together give the most complete picture of how to implement signing with your child. So I'd suggest using this program and the signing smart book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-18 04:21:05 EST)

This is a great package. The DVD really brings it all together. The illustrations are easy to understand. The Quick Reference Guide is not only a great tool but will also make a great momento as it has spaces to record when a sign was introduced and when your baby made the sign on his/her own. I would highly recommend this kit to anyone interested in signing with their baby.

I haven't started using this yet as I just received it but please be aware that the video is VHS not DVD based. Not a big problem but I know many people don't have VHS players anymore. We had to re-connect and configure the entertainment system, 2 hours spent on something I really didn't have time for. Amazon lists this a a video, not VHS. There is a DVD version, I just didn't realize it at the time. DUHHHHHH!
