Although she still prays for Caleb, Nellie Mae Fisher has broken up with her beau. Now, her heart's greatest longing is for more knowledge of the Lord.
Caleb yearns for freedom, as his plans to leave Honeybrook have been thwarted. He must stay on as caretaker for his father, who was crippled in a wintertime accident. He also longs for Nellie Mae, still hoping that she will return to the Old Order...and to him. Christian Yoder, a young Mennonite man, longs to get to know Nellie Mae better...and to share with her the secrets of her sister Suzy's final days. Rhoda, Nellie's older sister, longs for more of what the world has to offer--from fancy clothes, to her own car, to a new English boyfriend. Meanwhile, father Reuben Fisher longs for unity--among his family and all the brethren. Whose longing will be satisfied, and whose will not? |

I enjoyed this book so much, moreso than the first two in the series, although they also were good. I felt as though I really got to know the characters. I really enjoyed the descriptions of nature and the seasons. In some books it can actually interfere with the story line. The ending was excellent and the gospel was very clearly presented which sometimes is missing in Christian novels. I highly recommend it!

I picked up a book from a Der Dutchmann restaurant in Plain City, Ohio and it got me started on these Amish love stories. This book The Longing is one of a series of 3 and is just wonderful! I really never read much until I started reading these books and Beverly Lewis is my favorite author! This book The Longing is sweet, has drama, you learn about the Amish way of life and in these books there is no bad language or anything that would turn you off. I loved this series The Courtship of Nellie Fisher and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes love stories and to read for both enjoyment and to learn about another way of living. Almost makes me wish I could be Amish at times!

The book was very good if you like inspirational books but needs to be read in sequence......there are two books before this one in the series.

Longing is a great ending to a really good series. Lewis has come through again. My only wish is that the ending to the book would be as thorough as the rest of the series. It's almost as if the final pages are cut apart and pasted back together. We enjoy endings!!

Like many Beverly Lewis fans, I spent months "longing" for the ending to her newest series, "The Courtship of Nellie Fisher." The final book, "The Longing," does not disappoint. Although most of the conflicts developed in the first two books come to predictable resolutions, it's the journey Bev takes us on that keeps the reader turning the pages. As in all her books, the characters become living, breathing people that the reader either falls in love with, doesn't trust, or some times doesn't like. We sit at the bedside of dying family members, join quilting bees, listen in on private conversations and share secret thoughts of lovers. Predictable? Yes. But the journey Bev takes us on is never predictable. Even if I can guess the final destination, I'm always ready for the next Beverly Lewis journey. Can't wait for her next book. J.L. Beverly Lewis packs much more than a romantic Amish story into this book #3 of her "Courtship of Nellie Fisher" series called "The Longing." For sure and for certain! Yes there is Beverly's delightful way of expressing the wants, lives, emotions, and events of the Amish community. It is a peaceful existence compared to most of our lives, except for that nasty mule kick that Caleb's father takes to the head. Will it change the divisions in the local Amish church community? Even in the slower paced, rural life of the Amish, there is heartache, lost love, disagreement, and...well, Beverly Lewis never disappoints "Englischer" readers like myself. It's another "wunnerbaar-gut" tale by the Lancaster Story Lady.
FIVE STARS, for sure and for certain, because this book not only gives a delightful story of young & older Amish adults, but also has drawn a nice historical picture explaining the differences between the opposing sects of the Amish. What makes Mennonite, Beachy Meeting, New Order, and Old Order different? All are conservative and extremely religious, but some more than others. Bev brings the 1966 New Order Amish beginnings to light through fiction fun. "Jah, the split was about saving grace," the book explains...but then you need to read it. "The Longing" can also serve as a great stand-alone book. If you are giving this author a first try, buy this one and enjoy it, jah! Then, you'll likely have to back your buggy and buy the first two as well. No doubt, you'll find "The Longing" wonderful-good too. This book offers a fantastic look at the differences of basic faith in God and Christianity for the different groups of Amish included in the Lancaster County community of Pennsylvania. Having lived my own life near another large Amish community, in Indiana, I enjoyed the depth of the spiritual look at the Amish along side the romantic spirit of the youth. The author's own Christian heart pours throughout her book. If a family genealogy chart for the Fisher and Yoder Amish families had been included at the beginning of the book, I would have given it the 6th star. Mrs. Lewis: write another, return to Berne, IN, and I'll buy your lunch. Thanks for sharing your gift. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-12 05:39:06 EST)

The third installment and final book of the Nelie Mae Fisher story. The ending was somewhat predictable, but none-the-less entralling. As with each novel before, I was unable to put this book down.
This trilogy was a great story about an Amish family and the struggles and highlights of faith. Was a great read! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-02 05:41:23 EST)

Beverly Lewis specializes in writing stories set in Pennsylvania's Amish country, and the final entry in her Courtship of Nellie Fisher trilogy brings us closure on another set of well-written Christian fiction. Lewis has found her niche in the book industry, and she fills it very well with entirely readable novels that take you to another place and mind-set.
Nellie Mae Fisher has been separated from her beau Caleb when her new religious convictions come between the two lovers and their families. Nellie is trying to go on with her life alone, but she is filled with anxiety not only for Caleb but for her older sister Rhoda who has left the Plain life, and her friend Rosanna who has lost her adopted twins. In addition, Nellie is still mourning the loss of her younger sister Suzy, but she is trying to feel God's presence in her life as things change in her Amish community in the 1960s. Nellie's dearest wish is for Caleb to decide to come to the New Order Amish, but after his father is gravely injured, she fears he will be forever gone from her life. Lots of circumstances must change before any happiness can be found for the members of Honey Brook community. As usual, I like Lewis's easy writing style and her characters; Lewis has a gift for creating believable people for whom you care a great deal. This book is very preachy, however; for regular readers of Christian fiction that probably won't matter, but at times it does get a bit tedious. In addition, Lewis has a tendency to tie things up way too neatly, and changes of heart seem to be too quick to be realistic. In fact, if I could I would've rated this one 3.5 for the overly hurried happy endings, but since I do enjoy Lewis's stories and the wonderful world she creates, I feel that overall 4 stars is apt. I do hope Lewis will stray from the formula she's been using in her past two series and find some new twists she can spin in our beloved Lancaster County.
