This book is great! When I first began learning Spanish on my own, I bought it but put it aside for a while. It was just all so overwhelming. After using some Spanish software for a while, picking up more vocabulary, I decided to give this book a try. It is wonderful! It explains all those questions I had like why is it always me gusta, not me gusto. The explanations are thorough and the topics covered are extensive. Well worth the money!

I'm a Spanish student (beginner level) and I find this book really useful. It has a lot of exercises which is not so hard but makes you learn a lot. I know this is not enough to be fluent with Spanish. I know I really need to speak a lot of Spanish each day for me to be fluent and that is why Practice makes perfect! If you are a beginner then I recommend this book to you.

I found the Spanish verb tenses book to be very clear and easy to understand, I have read many Spanish books which have confused me as they have gone into too much grammar. This book keeps it nice and simple and the examples used are easy to relate to. After reading this book I found myself going back to my old Spanish books and could finally understand them thanks to this book.

I got this book as an accompaniment to another Spanish book I bought at the same time. This book is so much better! It gives very clear explanations and examples and the best are the exercises and translations that you are asked to do. The complete answer key is in the back to check your work. I highly recommend this book!

I began learning Spanish 16 months ago on a very informal basis, largely due to my changing work environment. I have purchased some instrtuctional CD's and Spanish for Dummies and Spanish Verbs for Dummies. The 'dummies' series does offer information about culture and provides an excellent phonetic reference for correct pronunciation of words. Both were interesting and pragmatic.
This book, [Spanish Verb Tenses] was recommended by Amazon. I read the reviews and found the price to be reasonable enough to try the book. I have found the book to be very user friendly. The concepts and gramatical basics are covered, but the exercises are enjoyable. I have since purchased Ms. Richmond's other two books: one for vocabulary and the other for pronouns. Each have delivered the exceptional discussion of language. They highlight both the similarities between english and spanish as well as the decisive differences. I feel that these books will provide me with skills to be more confident to speak spanish to native speakers in a gramatically correct manner. Thank you-- (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-13 01:30:20 EST)

I wanted know is this product was suitable for my requirements. I needed a publication which would assist in my ability to converse in Spanish. As the verb conjugations in this language are complicated I needed something to refer to at any given time. I found this book most helpful because it helped me to bring back to mind things I had previously learned while living in Spain, which I started to learn late in life and therefore not so easy to retain. I recommend this publication and others in the series to anyone who is determined to continue using this language.

I would recommend this book along with Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions for any level learner of Spanish, but I'd advise you to have a little bit previous knowledge. It's really cheap, explains every important concept in a very simple way and includes lots of exercises to practice. I've been using this book since the summer after I finished my first year of Elementary Spanish at college. I think it was very useful, especially in my second year of Spanish when I still didn't understand many grammar concepts but was given a text book written entirely in Spanish. This workbook explains things very clearly in English, which is important for beginners. Now that I am close to fluent in Spanish, I still use this book now and again to look up things I'm fuzzy on, and I definitely plan to use it to help me as a Teaching Assistant for students next year.

Use this book as a companion to whatever book/CD (grammar, vocab. Rosetta stone etc.) you are using to learn Spanish. I've finished the Rosetta Stone Latin American Spanish volume 1, and know a little bit of Spanish now. But if you are a beginner-beginner, this book may not be right for you. Especially, it may be very challenging for a new student to translate English into Spanish. Every section ends with a "translation/traduccion" exercise. In the first unit, you have to translate a whole paragraph--about 10 sentences of English--into Spanish.
Example from the 1st Unit translation exercise: "Marcos lives in Montana. His mother works in a school where she teaches music and phys. ed. In the morning she plays the piano, sings, and practices with the band." If you started Spanish yesterday or today and are able to translate this in Spanish, you are definitely a genius. Without finishing the Level 1 of the Rosetta Stone, I would never have been able to translate it. This is a fantastic book with a lot of exercises. No question about it. But if you are a beginner-beginner, use this book as a companion (not as your primary source) to whatever CD/books you are using now. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-04 00:59:24 EST)

Advancing within my present employment requires Spanish fluency. To achieve bi-lingual certification, I purchased various Spanish software programs. My progress remained slow. I began to believe that I had no hope of ever going beyond understanding a word or two from each sentence, and hoping I could manage something that made sense in reply.
Conjugating verbs was my greatest obstacle until I found this book. I can now reason out which tense to use, and which order to place the verb and subject in a sentence. I wish I had found this book sooner! The book presents each rule in manageable segments, then gives excercizes to test the reader's understanding. The excercizes are excellent reinforcement. I write the answers on a separate piece of paper rather than in the book. Leaving the pages unmarked allows me to repeat sections that might have given me problems the first time, as well as review excercizes after I've moved on. I also made up my own flashcards and vocabulary lists using the verbs and supplemental vocabulary lists. The cards or lists are reviewed 20 minutes each day, using various mnemonic techniques which I learned elsewhere. I now have a three prong approach to learning Spanish: the book for understanding grammar, lists and flashcards for expanding and testing vocabulary, software and TV to hear Spanish spoken by native speakers and to record my own voice in reply. I am finally making progress! This book was worth every penny. IT WORKS! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-15 01:01:09 EST)

This book was extremely helpful for me as you really need this kind of written practice in Spanish verbs if you are going to fully master the various conjugations (especially for me sitting a university paper in spanish).
I highly recommend it, it really helped me practice recalling the words out of my own head. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-12 00:58:55 EST)

I give private Spanish lessons. Although this book may seem tedious at times, it really helps my students understand the patterns of verb conjugation and memorize verb meanings. I highly recommend it for beginners, or for those who would like a refresher.

This is a great reference grammar book, excellent for beginners and intermediate students of the spanish language, covering all aspects of prepositions and pronouns with numerous examples covering all types of usage. Very useful and thorough exercises in both languages, that if you manage to complete them all, you become a master of the subject.
This book along with the one covering prepositions and pronouns are the top best that I could find to assist me in my spanish classes. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-15 14:16:38 EST)

This is the perfect book for someone that has had a year or two of spanish in school and has forgotten most of it via lack of use. I've searched for many books but this is the best by far. The author has done an incredible job of keeping things simple and presenting grammar in a manner that's easy to understand without overwhelming the student.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT ! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-03 01:46:20 EST)

This is one in a great series of Spanish study books. Lots of exercises so you can really practice. Also the organization makes for a great reference. My English grammar is terrible so I have a hard time figuring out what tense I want to use. The beginning of each section has an explanation of how the tenses translate. The pronouns and prepositions book is also great.

Easy to use with worksheets that make the subject clear. I particularly like the written paragraph exercise. After writing the paragraph you can check your Spanish phrasing in the answer section.

This book on Spanish verb tenses is the best I've ever seen. In fact, it is probably the only book of its kind. I haven't seen any other books like this one, probably because it would be a waste of time for someone else to write a book like this.
The book first explains the present tense in great detail. It explains how the present tense is used in every possibleway. Although, it doesn't explain that the present tense is often used to convey a future action more often than the actual future is. Richmond's explanation of the past tenses is also very good, but I didn't like how the imperfect and the preterit were explained. What I did like was how the author explains that the irregular preterit conjugations have predictable patterns. The subjunctive is explained towards the end, which is one of the most difficult things to master in Spanish grammar. I didn't particularly care for the author's explanation of the subjunctive because it seems to be a "regurgitation" of how other books explain it. All in all, this book is well worth its price. Every Spanish student (and teacher) should have a copy of "Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses." Brandon Simpson (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-19 01:32:53 EST)

A good book for the low price. It's large and has over 300 pages. It makes a good supplement for other spanish learning books that you may have. But I found it to be the type of book so often written by educators with many degrees. Too many rules.

I've been using this book about a month and it is humorous, very well designed, and successively takes you from the basics onward in a systematic way. Because I have a lot of other study materials and am in the middle of a Spanish immersion course in South America, I have not finished this book but for learning verbs, tenses, and vocabulary in general I highly recommend it. I am supplementing my other Spanish learning by reading a few pages and doing several exercises a day. The excercises are very well conceived.
When I finish this book I plan to buy one or two of the author's other books. It's like reading "The Firm" by Grisham and then wanting to read his other books too. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-09 14:24:47 EST)

This book saved my career. I had been many years without formal training prior to starting my teaching career. Without this book I never would have successfully passed the state test the first time. It could potentially be a great book for use in advanced level high school Spanish classes. It is a good review and teaches new concepts very well.

All I can say is that if your learning style tends to be analytical and/or visual (written on the page), get this book. You won't be sorry. It's organized very logically and offers great explanations of some things that tend to be fuzzy for English speakers. The best thing is that it provides tons of practice to really drill the concepts in... And let's face it, you are not going to learn or remember a language (written or spoken) without practice, no matter how many fad "immersion" CD's you have running in the background while you watch TV and eat popcorn. It's not a spectator sport. It takes work and practice--this book gives you a lot of that!
All of the Spanish Practice Makes Perfect books by Richmond are just as good as this one. Get them all and you'll be busy for months... doing the kind of "immersion" that really helps. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-09 14:24:47 EST)

Despite some flaws, I'm giving this book 5 stars because it is the best book out there on Spanish verb conjugation. In my opinion, other books that focus on lists and rote memorization of verb conjugations without explaining how and why to conjugate the verbs are a waste of time. This book systematically explains the rules for how and when to conjugate Spanish verbs in each tense, so whenever you learn a new Spanish verb, unless it's irregular, you'll already know how to use/conjugate it in all its tenses. In addition to lessons on verb conjugation, there are several other useful related lessons included, such as use of personal a, Hay, saber vs conocer, and the author's insightful observations on how many spanish verbs include a preposition. For example, Busco mis zapatos = I'm looking "for" my shoes. Mira eso = Look "at" that, etc., and she includes an appendix on verbs that take on prepositions and how it changes meaning.
I have a couple of criticisms of this book. The chapter on present tense doesn't mention that present tense verbs in Spanish, unlike in English, are often used for future actions and events. To use a common example, the literal tranlation of "nos vemos" is "we see each other". But in Spanish, since present tense is often used to communicate future events, nos vemos means "we'll see each other (later)". Unfortunately, this book doesn't mention this important dual-use aspect of present tense Spanish verbs. In addition, I found the explanations/rules in when to use Ser and Estar to be lacking, as the book provides lists of rules, of which there are too many exceptions and too many situations not listed to be useful (my opinion). For example, would you use ser or estar when in the context of prices in a store? From the rules given in this book, you wouldn't know the answer to that question or many other 'hard case' situations. The biggest shortcoming of this book is that all examples and drills for each tense, are limited to the chapter on those particular tenses. So, for example, after you learn about past tense preterite and past tense imperfect verbs, the book never challenges you with any exercises using a combination of the two in which you would have to know to select one tense or the other. It's either exercises using all preterite or all imperfect. Same with subjunctive tenses. The exercises do not really build on what you learned in previous chapters, and that was an unfortunate oversight on the part of the author. Speaking overall, if you're a beginner or intermediate spanish learner, the material taught in this book far outweighs its shortcomings. I haven't seen another book like it, and I've seen plenty. Verb conjugation is the most important aspect of learning any language, and for native English speakers learning Spanish, the task can seem daunting, as Spanish verb conjugation is much more complicated than in English. This book does an excellent job in explaining both the rules for verb conjugation, as well as explaining when you would choose one verb construct over another. It really 'holds your hand' through the material. Bottom line is that it will help you move to the next level in less time than it would take you if you didn't have this book. On a side note, in order to help other readers/students, I'd like to request that anyone reading this who knows of a better book on Spanish verb conjugation to leave a comment or make a post naming the book with an explanation. Despite its flaws, I honestly haven't seen another book come close to this one as far as walking students through the necessary methodical process teaching how to conjugate verbs in Spanish while explaining when to choose a particular tense/mood. But this book does have a number of shortcomings, which is why I'm making this request. I'll ask those pimping their own books/courses not to respond, and I would further ask that you not post verb conjugation "lists" books which do not teach conjugation rules with explanation as to when and why you choose a particular verb tense. I'm genuinely curious as to whether another book exists on Spanish verb conjugation which is better than this one. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-09 14:24:47 EST)

In my opinion, other books that focus on lists and rote memorization of verb conjugations without explaining how and why to conjugate the verbs are a waste of time. I have a few criticisms of this book. First, a request to Spanish textbook authors including the author of this book: Please stop explaining the differences between Ser vs. Estar as enduring traits and situations vs. temporary states and situations, followed by a list of rules. It's what's done in this book, as well as mosth other Spanish textbooks I've seen, and it does more harm than good for those learning spanish. Second, the chapter on present tense fails to mention that present tense verbs in Spanish, unlike in English, are often used for future actions and events? For example, the literal tranlation of "Nos vemos" is "we see each other". But in Spanish, Nos vemos means "we'll see each other (later)". Unfortunately, this book doesn't mention this important dual-use aspect of present tense Spanish verbs. The biggest shortcoming of this book is that all examples and drills for each tense, are limited to the chapter on those particular tenses. So after you learn about preterite and imperfect verbs, for example, the reader is never challenged with exercises using a combination of the two. It's either exercises using all preterite or all imperfect. Same with subjunctive tenses. This was a most unfortunate choice on the part of the author. Ok, so now you know the good and the bad, and trust me, if you're a beginner or intermediate spanish learner, the good far outweighs the shortcomings. I haven't seen another book like it, and I've seen plenty. Verb conjugation is the most important aspect of learning a new language, and this book does an excellent job in helping you move to the next level with your Spanish. Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R29WGSUB1N73M0 My review begins with a video review of Spanish Verb Tenses. And then a list of several products that you can use with this book to speed up your learning.
1. Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Pronouns And Prepositions This is a book by the same publisher. Just like Spanish Verb Tenses, this book has lots of exercises to improve your Spanish-language skills. Here's a tip. Make sure that you actually do the exercises. Don't skip them. You'll only be cheating yourself. 2. The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs This is a resource that you will not want to do without. But understand that it is a resource. It is not the type of book that you would want to read from cover to cover. 3. Learning Spanish Like Crazy: Spoken Spanish, Vol. 1 (2 volume set) This is the self-study course that I would recommend for someone that needs to immediately learn how to speak Spanish in order to communicate with Spanish-speakers that have recently arrived in the U.S or for someone that expects to be speaking to people in familiar situations in Latin America. This course comes closer to teaching the colluquial or familiar style of conversational Spanish that you will hear native speakers use among themselves. I like the fact that they only use native Spanish speakers in this course. 4. Mierda!: The Real Spanish You Were Never Taught in School (Plume) This book may not be for everyone, especially if you are offended by vulgar language. This book really does a great job at covering "street" Spanish. Even if you are not the type to use dirty words in your speech, you may still find that this book is fun to read. I know I did. Well, I have been studying spanish for while and I probably read about every book under the sun. This book is pretty good. In fact, the entire 'Pratice Makes Perfect' series is very good.

In Spanish there are 14 tenses and this book covers all of them as well as some things distinct to the Spanish language such as Hay, Ser vs Estar, Por vs Para and Saber vs Conocer. While this book is not a comprehensive text it is a great text to use to supplement one's learning and to get translation practice. I give it five stars for ease of use and simplicity of language. Beginners through advanced learners will find use for this dynamic book.I really like the translation practice because it helps student become aware of how things do not always translate word for word. I would recommend this text for any self learning student or traditional student who wants to get further practice and clarification on the Spanish verb tenses.

This book really gave me confidence with my spanish. It's simple to follow and you will notice the improvement in your grammar almost immediately. It was even easy to follow when it got down to the subjunctive tense and we all know how daunting that can be. I've bought it for friends, and recommend it whenever I can. If you need help with grammar, this is the book for you. And look how cheap it is!!
Too bad it doesn't come in Portuguese and Italian. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-11-14 08:29:57 EST)

This workbook is the best spanish aid that I've used. A person just can't communicate with just nouns and adjectives. They need a good working knowledge of verbs. This book takes you through the tenses, and spends 79 pages on just the present tense, working through all the irregulars, stem-changing verbs, etc. There are a total of 226 pages of workbook-type work, then some appendices, spanish-english glossary, and the answer key. The last page is 305. About every 6-7 pages is a paragraph to translate into spanish. It makes a person think. One thing about this book is that even though there is a small english-spanish dictionary in the back, you'll need another bigger dictionary, since many words are not in their dictionary. This is a great investment. I would buy it again, knowing what I know now.

As Spanish verb resources go, Practice Makes Perfect is almost as good as
Christopher Kendris's 501 Spanish Verbs. When you have to go to Mexico on business, with no knowledge of Spanish at all, and with just two weeks to learn to speak the language, you do whatever you can to learn. I bought and tried everything, including this book. It is good and I learned a lot from it. My best results in verbs and expecially in learning to speak and understand the language came from Behind the Wheel Spanish by Language Dynamics. Great course. This book is fantastic for teaching Spanish grammar for verb tenses. It goes great with a Spanish verb conjugation book such as 501 Spanish verbs. One of the most interesting things about this book is the vocabulary that you will learn. I was only expecting to learn how to conjugate verbs with this book. But I learned Spanish verb conjugation and so many new vocabulary words that I was able to put to use almost immediately with Spanish speakers. The exercises were also fun to do, and I never felt bored when studying with this book.
Many people say that you should first learn how to speak the language and reach an intermediate conversational level before attempting to study the grammar from a book. I disagree. I have used this book with my favorite Spanish course, Learning Spanish Like Crazy, and I am very happy with the progress that I have made. And I feel that this book has helped me to develop a better understanding of "why" sentences are said the way that they are in Spanish. Learning Spanish Like Crazy is probably the best self-study course for learning authentic Spanish from this side of the Atlantic, but it left me with certain questions about using Spanish verbs. But I have been able to use this book to successfully fill in those gaps and become more conversational. If you are truly serious about speaking fluent Spanish, then you'll want to order this book. I have taken 4 years of spanish in high school but I hadn't taken a class in over 4 years and had lost most of what I had learned. This is a great resource that introduces (or reintroduces) you to spanish verb forms and tenses. Memorizing verbs and conjugations is probably the most difficult thing to master in the Spanish language but this book makes it easy to comprhend. This is not an instant thing though. Learning any language takes time and practice but this book is exactly what you need to get you over that hump. I would reccomend pairing this book with an audio tape that teaches conversational spanish through dialogues. It allows you to put to use what you learn in the book.

This book is a must have for any student of the Spanish language. It was this book that helped to cement the rules of grammar for me. Some in the reviews have stated that "501 Verbs" is better but I disagree. The layout of this book is much cleaner and in reality they don't even compare in semantics. This book is a step by step, chapter by chapter book while the "501 Verbs" is more of a reference to verb conjugations with a little information at the beginning. If you are pondering whether or not to buy this book, just do it!

Say it any way you like, verbs are the key to speaking any language, especially Spanish.
But as good as Practice Makes Perfect may be, it is not enough. You must have verb practice, and in context. Here are my best recommendations in order of importance: 1. Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour Audio CDs This is the king of all Spanish courses and has wonderful verb templates, verbs in context, and verb practice. Most of the best written material is included in the CDs which you can listen to anywhere, even 'Behind the Wheel'. 2. 501 Spanish Verbs by Christopher Kendris 3. Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses. Next to Kendris' 501 Spanish Verbs, the best on the market. Used together, these form a potent learning mix that is sure to get you speaking, understanding and communicating effectively in Spanish. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-04 06:40:37 EST)

While admittedly good, Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses is not nearly as complete as Christopher Kendris's 501 Spanish Verbs. Furthermore, I would hesitate to say that any one work on Spanish verbs is the definitive resource one needs to understand and use Spanish verbs, tenses and idioms correctly.
Another fantastic resource for both comprehending, using and learning to speak and understand major Spanish verbs in all tenses is the Behind the Wheel Spanish series which is available in 3 levels. There is a book with the verbs and the tenses presented and then used in context, in dialogs, transformations and short stories. The book alone is worth the money, but perhaps the best part of the series are the CDs which literally take you from zero fluency to fluency in Spanish while you drive. There are plenty of books and courses that will help you learn Spanish. But there are only about 5 or 6 that I would consider mandatory if you want to learn Spanish easily. This book is one of them. If you are serious about learning to speak Spanish I encourage you to get the
following: 1. Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Pronouns And Prepositions 2. Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses 3. Learning Spanish Like Crazy CD course 4. 501 Spanish Verbs 5. A good Spanish dictionary 6. Spanish phrase book (1001 Most Useful Spanish Words or 770 Basic Phrases) That's how I built a solid foundation. Just using the above 6 tools. Everything else is supplemental but these 6 tools are mandatory. I am not fluent but I am able to communicate confidently and say just about anything that I want to say in Spanish and understand native speakers unless they are speaking at the pace of rapid machine gun fire. This book has really helped me a lot with conjugating verbs. Conjugating Spanish verbs has always been my greatest challenge with learning Spanish. But by using this book with the Learning Spanish Like Crazy CDs and using 501 Spanish Verbs as a reference I am finally mastering conjugating Spanish verbs. There are also plenty of exercises in this book to help you learn conjugating verbs and to reinforce what you learn about conjugating Spanish verbs. The most important advice that I can give you about this book is that you must do more than read the book. You must actually do the exercises to get the full benefit of this book and really learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs. And I recommend going through each lesson in the Learning Spanish Like Crazy CDs at least 3 times so that conjugating Spanish will begin to feel natural. The best thing about this book is that unlike other Grammar books, the exercises in this book are fun to do. But start on this book before doing the other book in the Practice Makes Perfect series (Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions). (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-05-16 06:54:06 EST)

I had been taking classes at a well known Spanish Institute and their required textbook pales in comparison to this book. I highly recommend this book because they have great explanations and lot of practice examples. The best part is the answer key in the back of the book. This book shed a lot of light on some things I had previously known and it helped me remember the concepts. I plan on getting the other book by this author as well. I already feel like I can read and write so much better than before this book.

I agree with the 5 star postings for this workbook. It is well organized, and is great for reinforcing verb conjugation. The only downside is that the dictionary in the back is not very good, so I had to look up a few words in a separate dictionary.
