Don't Sweat the Small Stuff and It's All Small Stuff : Simple Ways to Keep the Little Things from Taking Over Your Life

Got a stress case in your life? Of course you do: "Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things all at once." Carlson's cheerful book aims to make us stop and smell--if not roses--whatever is sitting in front of our noses. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... offers 100 meditations designed to make you appreciate being alive, keep your emotions (especially anger and dissatisfaction) in proper perspective, and cherish other people as the unique miracles they are. It's an owner's manual of the heart, and if you follow the directions, you will be a happier, more harmonious person. Like Stairmasters, oat bran, and other things that are good for you, the meditations take discipline. Even so, some of the strategies are kind of fun: "Imagine the people in your life as tiny infants and as 100-year-old adults." The trouble is, once you start, it's hard to stop.

My dear brothers and sisters who try to make it the best you can, just like me, in this thing call life, I feel you. I didn't buy this book. I heard about it years ago. I thought the title was corny, and the title seemed like it was cliche like in my mind. However, a co-worker lent it to me after seeing how I went through a job from hell after coming to the new place and other things happened to me as well. Well, I read this book. The ideas are very simple. There is something anyone can take away from. I like what it says about how we deal with stress, look at the past. For me that was very important. It seems to have the influence of Zen in a way that is very digestible for the common person.

While everything the book says is true, it's nothing you couldn't figure out with common sense or by reading any given page of the New Testament. It was an easy read, so I probably could've finished it at a book store in about an hour and saved myself some money.

The cover of this book says it was a bestselling book of the year at one time. After opening it up and glancing through it, it't not hard to see why.

The pupose of the book is to get you to look at things, common situations we all come across everyday, like being criticized or being given more work than you can possibly finish, and see them a little differently. Believe it or not, it delivers- and in just a page or two at a time if you can believe that!

That's because the wisdom is definitely there, on every page, and it just plain makes sense. Many times I've read a chapter or two and thought, "Why didn't I think of that before?".

The other good thing about this tiny book is that you could either sit down and read it cover-to-cover, or just pick it up once in awhile and pick a random chapter to read. Either way, the mini-chapters are sure to quickly leave most readers wondering why they make such a big deal out of the things they do. Other short self-help books I like include Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World.

This book has brief every day narrations of every day life situations and gives you advice to stay calm or take the best out of the situation.

This is a perfect book to have on your coffee table or at your bedside. Reading
any of Richard Carlson's 2 page chapters a day is wonderful support in having
a great life. This book has helped me feel at ease in myself. For example - the
chapter "Cut Your Some Slack," reminds me "Life is a process - just one thing after
another. When you lose it just start over again" - I love this! It's nice to
remember that every moment is new and full of possibilities.

I have also found books by authors Ariel & Shya Kane enlightening. By reading
their books, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation, How to Create a Magical Relationship and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment, self-discovery has become so easy and fun. They say that "awareness is not an achievement - it is a way of life." If you enjoy books written by Richard Carlson, I have a feeling you would also enjoy those written by the Kanes.

I've owned two copies of this book over the years. The first copy I lent to a friend who in turn lent to a friend and so on. Needless to say that this great little gem of a book never found its way back into my eagerly waiting hands.

I've purchased another copy since then and read chapters from it from time to time. We all tend to stress about the little things in life, and I'm no different. Whenever I find myself getting unduly frustrated or uptight, a read of this book always helps me put things back into perspective.

I'm a firm believer in not sweating the small stuff: Not just the book, but the principal of it. Life's way too brief and fleeting to always be tied up in minor details and insignificant issues. Save it for the big problems, I say.

This is a handy little guidebook that does well to serve as a constant reminder to keep things in perspective. I believe every household should have a copy of a book like Richard Carlson's 'Don't Sweat The Small Stuff".

(Hide Review...)  Zen comes to Suburbia
Reviewer Permalink
This book could have easily been titled: Basic Zen Buddhism for Suburbanites. If you look at the principles Richard Carlson teaches they are absolutely Zen 101 (albeit specifically tailored to a modern, western audience). Ideas such as living in the moment, non-attachment to the transitory nature of life, taking time to sit quietly each day (or as a well-known Soto Zen teacher once said, "Don't just do something, sit there"), contemplating your own mortality as a method of keeping the events of your life in perspective... all of these are a part of basic Buddhist practice. While anyone who has practiced one of the eastern contemplative disciplines will find this old hat, these lessons are invaluable for the average person - I bought this for my new wife who tends to get obsessive when it comes to the little things. There's a reason these ideas have been around for thousands of years - they work!

(Hide Review...)  Why Sweat At All? Have Fun... and be present within each moment of your life instead!
Reviewer Permalink
In his book "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... and it's all small stuff", author Richard Carlson, PH.D. offers witty and accessible stories emphasizing how life can be so much more fun by living a worry-free existence. Who knew? Carlson's philosophy makes so much sense. Instead of giving each and every situation a `life and death' urgency, Carlson suggests a gentler approach to life. He actually insists that life can be fun, and free from the mechanical, ritualistic reactions to every day life situations. In one of my favorite chapters in the book, Carlson discusses the relevance of `boredom'. He explains that we spend far too much energy distracting ourselves with superficial engagements, filling up our appointment books while we neglect to nurture our souls. Spending quiet time alone or with loved ones and enjoying each and every moment in life can be sufficiently engaging indeed.

Two of my favorite authors, Ariel and Shya Kane, also offer wonderful, engaging stories that help inspire me to lead a more fruitful, enriched life in their new book "Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment". In one of my favorite passages, Ariel and Shya discuss the importance of slowing down in order to be fully present within each moment of our lives. The Kanes suggest that instead of rushing through our daily activities, we can have greater fulfillment and enjoyment by "taking our time and being where you are". These truly enlightening books by Carlson and the Kanes suggest that life can be fun by taking the time to enjoy every moment of it! It seems easy- and guess what, it is!

(Hide Review...)  A Soft and Profound Approach to Enlightenment
Reviewer Permalink
"Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" is delightful in its conception and reads like a wonderful collection of wisdom vignettes. There are 100 short chapters in the book, each containing some insight on finding the keys to a satisfied, compassionate and enlightened life. The chapters can be read in any order. The soft and nurturing style is very appealing and makes this book a perfect companion to keep on hand when you are having a rough day and need a little support to put things into perspective. The simple and gentle wisdom of this book reminds me of another book Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment by Ariel and Shya Kane. In this book, the Kanes reveal, through very engaging personal stories, how every moment is a life lesson and a gift, and they invite us to experience life directly, with compassion and in line with our true heart's desire. I heartily recommend both books to anyone interested in a soft and profound approach to enlightenment

The author tells you to stop living in the past or future, and to get centered in the present. The chapters are refreshing and calming. I recommend this book along with my favorite book, Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self which taught me how to be become emotionally independent, best resolve my troublesome feelings, make the most of the present moment and my life. Red both of these books!

I can buy "don't sweat the small stuff," but when the author adds "it's all small stuff" he just lost all credibility. It's ALL small stuff? Tell that to a family whose loved one was just murdered. Or a parent who has to raise three severly deformed babies. That's the problem with self-help books of this genre, everything is penned into a nicely managed coral that totally ignores the REAL pains of life. If you want inspirational truth, check out the Bible where even Jesus, who never pulled any punches, tells us "life is difficult."

(Hide Review...)  Putting life into its proper perspective
Reviewer Permalink
It has been my experience that life has a tendency to give us what we need (at the most unexpected times) when dealing and coping with problems in our lives. The other afternoon, for example, in my disorganized garage, was searching frantically for an old receipt for tax purposes. Now it really wasn't worth much, nevertheless, to me this tiny problem was all pressing and all stressing. In the scheme of things, it wasn't worth the energy. What I did find in one of the old boxes, though, was this terrific little book. Sitting down on a box amongst the dust, I read it for at least an hour and within that short span of time, it truly changed my perspective on what is really important to gain a more loving and stress-free existence.

Interestingly as a child my father's favourite saying was, "Don't sweat the details:" Meaning don't let little things get in the way of what is important. Richard Carlson's message is basically the same. In this treasure of a book, he has written 100 suggestions on how to deal with life's "small stuff", such as developing our patience, compassion, and our tendencies to criticise and make knee-jerk judgements; essentially developing our potential to become more caring and loving human beings.

My personal favourites:

Make Peace with Imperfection

Develop your compassion

Don't interrupt Others or Finish Their Sentences

Become a Better Listener

Become an Early Riser

Stop Blaming Others

Practice Random Acts of Kindness

There are 93 other suggestions in this book that if practiced could well change one's life for the better. But like all things truly valuable, it takes work, practice and discipline to achieve anything worthwhile on this planet.

I've decided to choose one suggestion a day and make a conscious effort to practice it; because I believe if followed will change life's vagaries and problems, at least putting them into a proper perspective.

Highly Recommended.

Have you ever laid awake at night worrying. Well, if you read this book and take it to heart, you won't be doing that anymore. Chances are if you look back at all the stuff that's worried you in the past, it was small stuff. Really, like Dr. Carlson says, it's all small stuff, well mostly all.

What do you worry about. Dying? It's gonna happen. Dying naked, you're probably gonna be naked soon after you're dead anyway. Anyway, back to the book, there's lots of solid advice here, like the bit about cutting yourself some slack or the chapter that tells you to spend sometime thinking about someone to thank. There's a lot of people in my life who deserve thanks.

This is one small book that I really appreciate and I think you will too. Just remember, it's all small stuff (mostly). And remember, as Dr. Carlson says, "Turn your Melodrama into a Mellow Drama." You won't go wrong with this book.

Many times we worry about the smallest things in life. Richard Carleson, Ph.D., wrote a book to help us prevent small things in our life from becoming major challenges.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff-and it's all small stuff contains one hundred ways of preventing many of life's small stuff from becoming major disasters. Some of my favorite chapters include: 29. Become a Better Listener, 16. Ask Yourself the Question, "Will This Matter a Year from Now?", and 17. Surrender to the Fact that Life Isn't Fair.

I recommend reading this book in its entirety then keeping it next to your desk or bed and reading one chapter a day. You will see an immediate improvement in your life if you take the advice to heart. I know it has changed the way I live my life.

Don't be deceived by the seemingly innocuous title. This is indeed a very powerful book. This book takes positive thinking to a new level. As you read it you may find something deep inside that 'clicks', or you may feel that you have known this all the time, but never quite knew how to put it into words.

For instance, how many times do you ever feel good, I mean really good, after putting someone else down? Have you learned to live with a chronic level of stress? Do you spend great amounts of time putting people on the defensive, or attempting to convince them that you are right? How much of your life is wasted in meaningless arguments? How much time do you spend seeking approval and then being disappointed when you don't get it?

One story I love in the book is how a man's near miss with a large truck pulled his up short and made him re-evaluate his whole life. Suddenly the things he took for granted were recognized for their inherent importance to him. Another story dealt with a couple's constant fighting about finances, until by truly listening to the other, they could hear what was TRULY being said.

Those are just two examples of the great wisdom in the pages of this book. I believe this book is destined to become a classic in the truest sense of the word. We seem to take a lot of time learning everything except how to live. Dr. Richard Carlson gives great insight in leading you to understand that life is just about what you make of it.

Since the only way life can ever really be experienced is through your mind, doesn't it make sense to be sure your thoughts are positive, uplifting, and profitable to you? Get this book and begin a great journey of self-discovery that will lead to real and lasting happiness.

I would give this book 10 stars if Amazon would allow it.

I have never really been the type to embrace all the countless and mindless self-help books being spewed out by every other know-it-all, but I happened to land this little pocket sized bad boy in my carry-on luggage for a 9 hour flight. I read it, and I have to say I was overwhelmingly pleasantly surprised by what I was left with after diving into this book. I can not at all see where the previous reviewer of this book talks about "lists" or whatnot, there simply are none, these are brilliantly concocted tidbits and stories from both the authors own life experiences as well as others, that make the reader look at a lot of life's ups and downs in a WHOLE NEW light. For instance I could not agree more with the notion that a lot of people, including me, have the tendency to make trivial incidents into major life-altering emergencies, things that we won't even remember the next day are blown out of proportion sending us to an early grave! Instead of almost getting a heartattack because you spilled your morning coffee all over the floor, how about you just wipe it up and pour a new one? When I read this I had to stop and think, because funnily enough exactly this had happened to me, and I was reminded of how I had almost blown my top that morning, but now it was something I most likely would never have thought of again had I not read this book.
My point being, I found this book totally intruiging and eye-opening, I am constantly being reminded about stuff from there daily, and how you really should pick the battles in life that it is worth getting your blood-pressure up over! Do yourself a favor and read this book as soon as possible!

I got this book for Christmas and really like it. I haven't finished it yet as I kept it in the bathroom and read it here and there. And I must say, it's a very motivating, umcomplicated self-help book. It's not the kind you have to sit down and read cover to cover either, rather its a book to "sample" a few pages of as the book is divided up into very short stories, each containing a gem of wisdom. A classic that lives on, I give it 5 stars for its timeless values and inspiration. Readers interested in other inspirational books might also like "The Sixty-Second Motivator" as well.

Reading this book helps vastly improve our perception of various problems we face each day. So many negative thoughts can be readjusted and become manageable in our mind. Each time I recommend this book to a stressed out person, he or she comes back smiling and wondering why they didn't apply Dr. Carlson's principles earlier.
