A Course in Miracles

A Course in Miracles begins...
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.

As its title implies, the Course is arranged throughout as a teaching device. It consists of three books: Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. The order in which students choose to use the books, and the ways in which they study them, depend on their particular needs and preferences.

The curriculum the Course proposes is carefully conceived and is explained, step by step, at both the theoretical and practical levels. It emphasizes application rather than theory, and experience rather than theology. Although Christian in statement, the Course deals with universal spiritual themes. It emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum. There are many others, this one differing from them only in form. They all lead to God in the end.

The Text is largely theoretical, and sets forth the concepts on which the Course's thought system is based. Its ideas contain the foundation for the Workbook's lessons. Without the practical application the Workbook provides, the Text would remain largely a series of abstractions which would hardly suffice to bring about the thought reversal at which the Course aims.

The Workbook includes 365 lessons, one for each day of the year. It is not necessary, however, to do the lessons at that tempo, and one might want to remain with a particularly appealing lesson for more than one day. The practical nature of the Workbook is underscored by the introduction to its lessons, which emphasizes experience through application rather than a prior commitment to a spiritual goal:

Some of the ideas the workbook presents you will find hard to believe, and others may seem to be quite startling. This does not matter. You are merely asked to apply the ideas as you are directed to do. You are not asked to judge them at all. You are asked only to use them. It is their use that will give them meaning to you, and will show you that they are true.

Finally, the Manual for Teachers, which is written in question and answer form, provides answers to some of the more likely questions a student might ask. It also includes a clarification of a number of the terms the Course uses, explaining them within the theoretical framework of the Text.

The Course makes no claim to finality, nor are the Workbook lessons intended to bring the student's learning to completion. At the end, the reader is left in the hands of his or her own Internal Teacher, Who will direct all subsequent learning as He sees fit.
When Helen Schucman, a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University, began hearing an inner voice of rapid dictation (which she eventually identified as the voice of Jesus), she decided to start taking shorthand notes. Then, with the support and encouragement of a colleague, Schucman continued to assemble the teachings that came to her. The result is A Course in Miracles, a book that has spawned hundreds of study groups and an international following. Although some may find the teachings simplistic ("To heal is to make happy"), many are struck by the predominately compassionate and eloquent passages of this Christian-based interpretation of the Bible ("Whenever you deny a blessing to a brother you will feel deprived, because denial is as total as love"). Indeed, many of the teachings carry weight and certainly merit the acclaim and attention that this book has generated. --Gail Hudson

A seed from nature
In the mind of man
Under the ray of light
Sprouts a bush in thought
With bud of one rose
Unfolding natures purpose
Her soft pedals undaunted
As her contemporaries trespass
Reflecting the light of God's sun
Through her beauty in sent
And splendid tenderness in sight
Nothing to learn she already knows
Given to one in return for one
Balanced to be as it was intended
A course in miracles

This book changed my life. It helps me learn how to love people and myself. I have studied religions, metaphysics, and new age philosophies and this book is easily the most important book I have ever read. I have been a student of the course for 16 years and as a result I am full of peace, love, and happiness and see the world through eyes of love. It has healed my relationships with people in my life as well as soothed my anxieties.

The text is very challenging to read and it is helpful to have a study group or a primer to help you understand the topics. The workbook is easy to follow and gently guides you through 365 practical and effective daily meditations.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Do the people in your life a favor and practice its principles. :)

Explores the frontier of thought-power with informality. Sage, meticulous, orderly, this book offers the reader a gentle venue for investigating the dynamics of spirtuality. If it gets diffusive, read 21st Century Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures or something else that can help the mind project further into the ideas and come to the conclusions best fitting your situation.

This book is written from Spirit.
The paperback version contains all three books in the Course: Text, Workbook for students, and Manual for teachers.
This work includes the universal concept of Consciousness as the Source of all with an emphasis on Fatherhood(Creator), Brotherhood(everything created), and Holy Spirit(the Voice from God as the Teacher). Its main focuses are on Brotherhood, Forgiveness, experiencing the Present Moment and Spiritual Awakening.
If you are at the highly developed spiritual stage needed to grasp this book, you will be highly rewarded.
If not, you should read it anyway to gain that highly developed spiritual insight, but first you should read Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment and "A New Earth" A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose (Oprah's Book Club, Selection 61) (and anything else written by Tolle) to gain insight into the type of concepts needed to understand what is being taught in the Course.

Make sure that you read the "Text" before or at the same that you do the "Workbook for Students" for a much more in depth understanding of the workbook.

This book is garbage, a total waste of time and money. There is nothing here of any real substance. Amazing is an understatement. A lantern for a seeker. Letting go of what you think you know. Releasing feelings of guilt, fear, and anger. ACIM on forgivness- "The forgiven world becomes the gate of heaven, because by its mercy we can at last forgive ourselves". ACIM on your true nature-"The abilities you now possess are only shadows of your real strenth. Since you are not certain how to use them you are incapable of knowledge because you can still perceive lovelessly".

I am well educated by modern western standards - I have a masters degree in electrical engineering, and a masters degree in business (MBA)...I am middle-aged so I have had plenty of time to witness life on earth...I was also in the US Navy at an early age...I hope this gives you a context for my review........I have to honestly say, without any reservation, from the bottom of my heart - that this is the single MOST IMPORTANT book - rather EDUCATION - of my entire life...Nothing else comes close....If you are seeking true happiness, inner peace, would like to really internalize "why you are here", this is the best work around....If you want to learn how to deal with your resentment, prejudices, and maybe most-importantly, ego - this book will do it for you. And if you don't think you have any of these issues - perhaps you need this book even more!...This book goes beyond formal religion (which I do not partake in), beyond meditation (which I've practiced for ~30 years), and beyond the Bible (which I've read but didn't really "internalize")....I am about half way through the lessons (this is the part you should focus on - the other parts are optional), and I look forward every morning to reading a new lesson - or internalizing the previous lesson...I like this book so much I am going to give out about 7 copies for the holiday's to family and friends......And for any of you with significant health challenges (like me) - what you learn from this book will help you.....Start with lesson one, practice each lesson, have patients, and before you know it - you will see the light....As far as some of the reviews on here that were not so kind, I will not pass judgment of these folks - but wish them well in there journey to "seeing the light".

The Course In Miracles is for those serious students who are striving for the next higher level of spiritual awareness. It is, in my humble opinion, the highest and best wisdom available on the planet today. While the material is not always the easiest to assimilate, because it moves beyond the generally accepted principles of life, the material contained therein will make your heart sing and spirit soar beyond anything you dreamed possible. The wisdom and truth in the Course In Miracles enriches and empowers your life, and will bring great joy in a sometimes dreary world. This trip is not only for your lifetime but for your eternity. In her early writtings the author Admits that she created the ideas and that they were not in fact the words of Jesus. The books cannot be Based on the words of Jesus as they Deny his sovreignty.
Jesus of Nazarath Claimed to be the son of God. And He claimed to be 'The Light, The truth, and the way.' He in fact claimed that only buy and thru him can you find the father. If either of these things is untrue, then he was simply a carpenters bastard son who scammed hundereds of people. And he would have been Crazy, you know to make the claim of divinity.
One must either accept him as painted in the bible, or reject him. I'm not saying for people to believe in the Jesus of the Bible, thats for you to decide, I'm saying reject this book as the Lie that it is.

This book is filled with a bunch of statements with no proof or evidence to support them.

Anyone who finds this book useful, is gullible, and can believe things anyone tells them.

This book makes claims which are supposed to be "knowledge" however have nothing to back them up, they are just empty sentences.

I can sit around and write "Miracles come from love. Love is the greatest thing in the universe, etc"

This is not a book with knowledge, it will not enlighten you (unless you can easily believe empty statements with no back up or evidence)

This is a very profound book. It is a big book and challenging for many who are not focused on finishing it. But, when you do, you will notice many changes in your life.

In fact, you don't even have to do the whole course, as it seems when you are having an off day, you can just pick up the book. When you open it, you will be lead to the exact page you need to read. I would recommend this book for someone who wants to break down old belief systems. One these are brought down, the book allows for your consciousness to align with love. Which can be very powerful.

A great book to have

This book is amazing. It is a masterpiece of mind training and cutting edge philosophy. It leads the reader towards a peaceful interpretation of life.
I found this work when I was having severe health issues and was in deep despair. It did not disappoint me. Working with the lessons I was able to find new attitudes towards my problems that gave me hope. Eventually this led to actual physical healing.
This book delves heavily into the function of the relationship in healing and as identity. This was way before people were talking about "quantum entanglement" and the "intersubjective" perspective. Each reading brings new insights. Applying it to your own life brings about a deep sense of connection.
The text can be thick at times. I have met many people who have been turned off by this factor. It's well worth the work to understand it. I began to sing the lessons to myself to make them easier to integrate and memorize. Since much of the lessons are in iambic pentameter, this works very well. They even work well as rap music!

This book gives you a method by which to change your life. It is spoken in a spiritual language (not religious) but can be understood outside of the spiritual realm. It states that God's teachers come from all religions and NO religion. The longer I study the book, the more I know it's true. There are study groups EVERYWHERE. Surf the net for them or look on meetup.com. I am a student of philosophy, psychology and prior to reading this book, agnostic. The author was a Columbia college professor and Jew. The lighter reading versions of this message include Conversations with God (Walshe) Power of Now (Tolle) and The Four Agreements (Ruiz)

If we are all in an "illusion" what is your moral campus? I mean, and do not take an offense to it, I buy the concept of acim since it is simplified Buddhism and as such it is my faith. If I want to teach some one about Maya I could not give a better book to read is the course, or better yet listen to the tapes (what a powerful verse and language)

But learning about Maya(acim) will not help you to "awake", or will it? Is that enough, you think to "forgive" constantly but remain the same person as you were in 10 reincarnations before? Where is the progress, where is the path?
Spirituality is referred as a path we walk on.
In a way; what would stop me to be the same little person who lies, want to get ahead, thinks of himself and lives his petty, stupid little life without any remorse or any lessons learned throughout lifetimes? I can just forgive myself for being selfish. Will forgiveness teach me to be like Mother Theresa? I doubt it. It will become repetitious and boring after a while.
Have you met anyone who "awakened" via acim? I do no mean this question as contentious but a serious one. I know people who "awakened by practicing selfless, meditative and spiritual lives,
Artists or even priests, but I like to know if "forgiveness" is really enough or it is just a façade.

It is not very often we come across a book that says so much about who we are and why we are here. The error in perception, the illusion of separation, and why there is no such thing as guilt and sin are all central to its theme, and yet there is so much more. The wording of the text is almost biblical in tone, but such is the strength of its message it cannot fail to inspire those who open its pages. If you are genuine in your desire to understand the true meaning of your existence, including the cause of all your pain and suffering, then this really is the beginning of a journey that will change your life forever.

`Truth is restored to you through your desire, as it was lost to you through your desire for something else. Open the holy place that you closed off by valuing the "something else," and what was never lost will quietly return.'

It is a truly inspirational book without comparison. My only advice is that you take your time and understand the true depth of its message.

"You will not see the Father until you first see the perfection of your holy brother". The language is that of classic western theology, but that's where the similarity ends. I read this work years ago, and with considerable effort. I haven't been the same since. It lead to other books and teachers that I had previously thought to be unbalanced or worse. This book marks a turning point in the lives of many because by the time you finish it, you are able to perceive and understand much which had previously escaped you. And this has a domino-effect which changes the way that you experience reality. Of course, everyone's experience will be at least somewhat different, if not totally different. This massive and powerful volume was not a pleasurable read for me, it hurt. I felt an almost continual and irrational fear in my gut throughout most of it. My ego was terrified by the intense exposure. As cliche as it may sound, it felt like a part of me was dying. But here I am, and certainly the better for it. The greatest benefit for me has been the elimination of confusion, who should I believe, what should I believe. I no longer look outside of myself for answers. This review is for anyone for whom it may resonate. If you get this book and find that you hate it, or don't understand it, or just can't handle it for some reason, just put it aside, store it in a safe place. Don't ever part with it.

Concerned that people will see sickness as a spiritual problem, or something to be 'fixed' with the sick person, and blame the sick person - which takes away compassion and care when most needed. Yes, God answers prayers, but sometimes the answer is Wait, and sometimes it is No, not always yes - God loves us always.

Jesus told the apostles that the blind man's blindness was Not due to the man's nor his parents sin, but for the Glory of God.

It is sad that we can not accept sickness as a way to lead us closer to God. That we want to take the Cross out of our lives, even though Jesus says for us to pick up our crosses and follow Him. Where did Jesus take His Cross, to Calvary - ('Father take this cross from Me, but not mine will by yours be done' - 'my soul is sorrowful even unto death' - 'My God, My God, why have you abandoned Me')

being Near Jesus when we are in great suffering, whether physical, emotional or spiritual - is being close to Jesus in the Garden and at Calvary, as Mary and John were. Not easy, but still a very good place to be if we remember Whom we are near, Jesus.

I recommend Through the Cross to Victory and The Passion of the Cross.

I probably sound like a religious fanatic, but I am just excited and feel profoundly blessed to be given what I consisder a great, great blessing. I have found the path to God. After 30 years of spiritual seeking, and seeing references made to "A Course in Miracles" in quite a number of the seminars and books that inspired me, I decided to read it for myself.

What I found was a lot of good information and inspiration embedded within a philosophy that often seemed obtuse. The teachings come across in the style of Biblical lessons, with a similarly ambiguous flavor that invites multiple viewpoints.

The essence of "A Course in Miracles" is decidedly Christian in orientation, yet it is doubtful that most traditional Christian denominations would embrace its wisdom. Yet it is not quite gnostic in its approach either, as the Christian gnostics preferred a more directly experiential and less theoretical approach to spiritual knowledge. "A Course in Miracles" seems to fall somewhere between traditional Christianity and Christian gnosticism.

I enjoyed the second half of the book much more, which contains the workbook exercises. I found these to be more accessible and practical in terms of inspiring spiritual growth.

This book is a challenging read, even for the most experienced spiritual seeker. Yet it stands among the great inspirational books of our time, offering glimmers of insight and new viewpoints that expand spiritual perspective.

A very profound book that also guides the reader to an expanded spiritual awareness and does so in a very readable style is High Way from Hell: Using Emotion to Fan the Fire of Enlightment.

Straight and narrow is the path. A lot of other paths will pull you from the straight path. Many other paths may get you the same end result but like many rivers that lead to the same ocean, some just wind and lot longer til they get there.

This book uses the name of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit but it totally misinterprets and changes what the Bible is actually saying. If anyone were to actually read the Bible for themselves they could find the discrepancies between what the author is saying and what the Bible actually means. If you want to write a bunch of stuff about the value of man, changing your thinking and making your life count, fine, but don't assign God's name to it.

I first encountered ACIM in 1987. I went through the 365 lessons, then read the text and the section for teachers. I went through the book again, this time more aware of what ACIM teaches. Since then, I have re-read sections until ACIM became clear. It essentially teaches that your ego affects how you perceive reality (or what is happening in your life). It teaches that you are NOT a body, but in reality spirit from God. A yogi would call it "Atman", your real Self (capitalized). The good news is, you can subjugate the ego through meditation; the bad news is, it's very difficult. If you truly abolish the ego, you will think you died. (You refers to your ego. This is true, since "you" did die.)
The Course speaks through Jesus, as He was called when He lived in Palestine. Christians will have a hard time with ACIM, especially if they look at Jesus as their Savior. Really, we are responsible for our own salvation. We have to do the work, and it is not easy.
Once you recognize all pain and suffering derives from your ego, you will be free. In reality you are a perfect being. It teaches you there is Oneness, that there is only One Mind, and that all of us are thoughts in God's mind. Vedanta teaches the same thing, called non-dualism.
ACIM will expand your mind if you stay with it. You need to meditate to quiet your mind. You need to do as the Bible tells you, "Be still and know that I am God."
This is not a coffee table book. It requires commitment. The reward is, your life will be full of miracles.
I give it 5 stars because it requires you to do some work on yourself.

I feel that this book does not acurately or truly represent our Savior. I feel that many people have been confused by this book. I think they feel like it gives them hope when it is really taking it away. We can be perfect in our Heavenly Father's eyes, if we but repent. This book would have you feel that there was no need for that, or the Gospel, thereby taking away your opportunity to learn of this good news and realize true happiness.
Oftentimes we feel overwhelmed trying to be good, and to do what is right. The answer is not find an excuse to not do these things, but to carry on and pray for strength. We are not a self serving people.
I hope that those who have found themselves with questions will take the matter to prayer with Heavenly Father and find the peace they are seeking.

Any book that indicates that there is a better way than what the Holy Bible does, is false teaching. Please be careful that you don't get misled by false teachings like you'll find in this book. Statements such as "There is no Sin", A slain Christ has no meaning and The name of Jesus Christ is but a symbol will only lead you to destruction and straight to hell. I know this is blunt, but please read the Bible, God's Holy Word, and take it for the complete truth that it is. Stay away from false teachers such as the author of this book.

I bought this book and read it from cover to cover. Even though I was into Gnosticism, I did not like the book at all. I find that this book has no meat. Just empty and hollow with lots of playing with words. The style of presentation is quite mechanical. It seems as if it was generated by a computer program. It is hard to find insights or spiritual sparklings in the book. If the concept of "True me is inherently a part of God " appeals to you, there are many 'real' books to explore.

For those of you who dislike this book, please read the same book. You will enjoy it immensely. Biblically and scripturally correct.

Jesus is the "light of the world"--not us. Please be careful of this book. There is no scriptural or scientific basis for what it teaches.

Over the years I read about "A Course in Miracles" referenced in other books. On occasion I would pick it up in a bookstore and look at it briefly, but found it to be confusing. It wasn't until after we read "Disappearance of the Universe" by Gary Renard that my husband and I decided to read the "Course," and oh what a difference that has made in our lives! The message of this book is the Truth, folks. I highly recommend that anybody interested in the Course first read "Disappearance" as a primer for the Course. But I recommend everyone read the Course. The message Jesus gives in the Course is what he was trying to say when he was here on this earth, but earthly egos got in the way. If you want to know who you are and what life is all about, this book will tell you. Becoming a student of the Course will help you to experience the joy and peace that we are all searching for and that is our rightful inheritance because that is how we were created - to "teach only love, for that is what you are"! The more I read the Course (and I'm on the second reading of it) the truer it rings, the more deeply I understand God and our relationship to him. The Truth floods my heart with a joyful YES, YES, YES!!!

A Course in Miracles is unlike anything else you'll ever read. It's not the Bible; nor does it claim to be. But it is a very spiritual piece of work.

You can tell it will be different right from the beginning. The introduction starts out by saying "This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary."

It goes on to say the course can be summed up very simply:
"Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God."

The book includes 3 books. First, the text, which explains the concepts on which the Course's thought system is based. Second, the workbook, which includes 365 lessons, one for each day of the year. Third, the manual for teachers, which is written in a Q&A format.

The Course distinguishes between what is knowledge and what is perception. It notes that knowledge is truth and is the law of love or God. Truth is unalterable and eternal. Conversely, perception is based on interpretation, not facts, and is therefore changeable.

The Course notes that the "little I" seeks to enhance itself by external approval, material possessions and external love. But the Self that God created needs nothing. "It is forever complete, safe, loved and loving."

It also notes that sin is defined as "lack of love," and that in this world, forgiveness is the necessary correction to all the mistake we make.

A Course in Miracles is not an easy read, but it is worth the effort. If you stay with it and reflect on what it has to say, you'll find the peace referenced in the introduction.
