The Modern Language Association has developed a crisp contemporary style with ready application well beyond the realms of modern literature. The style is an evolution of Chicago style. The reference format for the "Works Cited" in MLA-speak, are virtually indistinguishable from those in Chicago-style bibliographies. However, MLA has added a unique parenthetical "author-page" citation to reference sources in the text. This is easy for both scholars and non-scholars alike to comprehend and use, making this a good general-purpose style.
The MLA Handbook does an excellent job of representing the style, though with occasional foibles. These tend to be more a distraction than a nuisance, and are often ignored when the style is used in scholarly publication. For example, there is a marked predisposition for the use of abbreviations in references. This is unnecessary, and can present some rather unsavory phrases when sounded out, such as "U of Chicago P" for University of Chicago Press. Page space is rarely so confined as to make the parsimonious use of letters productive, so many authors and journal editors forgo this frugality. The handbook devotes an entire twenty-page chapter to the topic. There is a tendency in the handbook expand features beyond their useful application. In the last edition the requirements for presenting quotations was elaborated far beyond the needs of most scholars. This was circumscribed in the current edition, but references to electronic sources were elaborated far beyond their credible application. Such references can have up to fifteen elements! An ephemeral online source cannot be made permanent and credible by elaborating the reference to it, and this appears to be an attempt to do just that. These features, too, can be employed as needed or safely ignored. Missing from the handbook is any reference to the use of headings and subheadings in research papers. The handbook claims that most instructors discourage their use. However, an informal sampling of articles published in the MLA's own journal, PMLA, found that about half did make use of subheadings. This seems a bit hypocritical, especially in a handbook that gets a mite preachy about plagiarism. Do as I do, do as I say, or what? To be credible the handbook should reflect the style as applied in print. These criticisms border on the trivial simply because there is nothing else to complain about. At its best, the style employs simple rules. For example, if a number can be written in one or two words write it out. Otherwise use numerals, and always use numerals for precise measures. In contrast, APA (American Psychological Association) style has elaborate rules requiring some small numbers to be written as words, others as numerals. MLA style is free of such exceptions. As long as the style and handbook are approached with a measure of tolerance for its idiosyncrasies, it is easy to use and adequately comprehensive for all the tasks of scholarship. Only if you have delved into other research styles such as APA, AMA (American Medical Association), and Chicago can you appreciate the simplicity of MLA style and the masterly way it has been documented in the handbook. There is elegance in ordered simplicity, and more so than any other research style, MLA style has achieved that elegance. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-20 11:11:33 EST)

I actually use the APA style book, but getting this for a few dollars, even though it is the 1999 edition, was good as it is printed on very high quality paper and has a unique lie flat binding that works well even though it isn't loose leaf or spiral bound. If you think a copy might be useful, I suggest you give it a try!

I am from a French speaking country and was used to an academic style of writing different from the American method. The Modern Language Association is very helpful to international students in the sense that it helps to achieve a successful writing of research papers in most American colleges and universities. It is an efficient guide to a writing style which is simple and clear in order to satisfy readers. Other important insights from the MLA are the way it helps to avoid plagiarism and to use electronic resources in an academic research paper. The last is most appreciated because of the amount of information one can get from internet.

First of all, you should ignore all the one-star reviews of this book. Those reviews criticize the MLA, not the book. The book itself is really good. One of my English professors recommended it to our class. She also said that every English major should have a copy of it. I had always used Diana Hacker's book in other classes. After she recommended it, I decided to check it out at the bookstore. After skimming through it, I decided to buy it. It was so much easier to follow than Hacker's book. I will use it in the future. Gibaldi devotes an entire chapter just to plagiarism (and how to avoid it).

My copy of the handbook is well-worn and probably older than most of the people on-line trying to buy this book right now, but I still remember how useful it was to me.
We were forced to purchase this book in high school in the early 90s. It was the format in which all papers were required to be written. While at first tedious, learning this system eventually made writing any paper really, really easy. When I got to college, I was leaps and bounds ahead of the other students who had not learned this format. There were several occasions in which my essays were copied by the professors to use as an example of "the right way to write a paper." Because writing papers did not intimidate me, I took 4 times the required writing component courses in college. Absolutely buy this book and refer to it often. Very rarely does it not have the answer you're looking for (that was really awesome, because nothing is more frustrating than looking at a manual for an answer it doesn't have). High school students and college kids alike can really put this dandy guide to source citations and research papers to good use. MLA rules are constantly changing--not even English professors can keep up with all the nitpicky rules, so it's nice to have concrete examples of various sources to help you out. The book offers a comprehensive guide to different citations, some common and some not, as well as general tips for writing papers, from choosing a topic to fine tuning your final draft. Whether you're the English major working on the thesis or just struggling to get through English 101, this book can really help you out. I keep this on my desk throughout the year and consult it on every paper. A must have.
(Sorry, media and science geeks: AP and APA styles not included, but you've got your own books!) (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-08-06 22:13:09 EST)

This book is hard to find things in and doesn't seem extremely well-organized. Besides that, it's annoying because it looks like it was done on an old school typewriter. I thought I'd need it because I need to write a lot of papers for my classes, but it turns out I can just look in the journals I'm using for the citation style for the most part.

As an English Lit. major in college a MLA Handbook is indispensible, but I was disappointed with this one. I found it difficult to locate the information I needed, often having to comb several pages to find what I was looking for. It is just not convenient to use. I much prefer Diana Hacker's "A Writer's Reference." The layout of her book is much simpler to navigate, and the spiral binding is always a plus, because it lays open on your desk nicely.

The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Sixth Editions is a must for anyone who is attending secondary or post-secondary school, because it shows them how to properly cite their sources when writing a research paper. It show them how to create a bibliograhy and works cited page for just about any kind of source that they are using, whether it is a book, scientfic journal, newspaper, magazine article, or online source.

I have used this book extensively since I began my Master's degree program, and I have been very pleased with both the content and simplicity of use. Having been out of school for several years, I found myself confused as to how to correctly cite various types of media for a bibliography, but this great book is loaded with examples of how to correctly cite any type of media.
From book citations to internet websites, this book conatins complete chapters along with detailed examples of different citations and how to correctly place them in a bibliography. The text is comprehensive and easy to understand. I have referred to this book numerous times to find a correct citation, and every time I have been able to find an example of the citation I was looking for. I give this great book my highest recommendation. It is a necessary tool for any student who is required to write a research paper. If you're having trouble finding the correct way to cite items for a bibliography, then check out this great resource. You'll be sure to find what you're looking for inside. The MLA Handbook is the most useful writing instruction manual available. The handbook's straight-forward English and clear-cut presentation of its contents, will make writing research papers, formal letters and yes, citations, a smooth and swift task. College freshmen and sophomores will be sharpened and formed into skilled and knowledgeable writers. And their anxieties will be consumed by a confidence that no longer fears those dreadful words "research paper." But this does not mean that you should sell it back after you meet your requisites! The MLA handbook is a not something you discard like those odious textbooks that are reprinted and updated every semester. It is a trustworthy handbook there for your literary refinement, always. The MLA handbook should be issued to all incoming students at orientation.

There are some things in life that I just do not understand at all. Being this detailed in citing a reference is one of them. People, let's all think about this logically for a moment. Someone is writing a term paper for high school or college. This person obviously does a lot of research, spends time editing his grammar and the way the paper flows, and making sure all of his points are accurate and effective. He has spent mich time putting his notes together and typing his research into a fully comprehensible paper. After all of this, he wastes a lot of time looking up how to "correctly" cite a source.
What I don't understand is why you can't just do something like write down the author's name and the title so that if anyone wanted to go back to the original source, they can. This would work a lot better than wondering what gets underlined, what gets quotes, where all of the puntuation marks go, and every single minute detail this book worries so much about. Certainly this would not be considered plagiarism in a society that thinks logically because you are giving credit where credit is due, and anyone can go back and check what publishing company and city and year your book is from if need be. It is a sad day for mankind when we get extremely picky over how we're going to cite sources. An author and the title would be plenty. This book is busy work in its worst form. It spends time that is needleslly wasted. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 04:00:30 EST)

This is a very important handbook for English Graduate students, especially since professors expect only the best papers from their students at this level. The layout is very simple and it covers almost everything. I like how it goes into punctuation issues; I always have trouble remembering when to use semi-colons versus commas. I'm probably still using them wrong.
There are a few grammer issues I wish they'd include, such as "who" versus "whom," but overall most everything is covered. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 04:00:30 EST)

The MLA (Modern Language Association) style is my preferred style for writing papers - both in terms of citation and in terms of overall format. While I must confess to making small changes (based on my British English background and preference), I still adhere to most of the MLA standards when it comes to putting together research papers.
This is a guide that is useful not only for writing, but also for researching. There is a section that discusses researching both in a library and online. The guide then gives a refresher course in grammar, spelling, sentence and paragraph construction, and other elements of style that are useful in the general academic paper. By far the most useful part of this guide is the section that shows how to reference in footnotes, endnotes, in-line/in-text citations and proper documentation of sources. While there are few elements due to new media (how does one reference a video on MPG format that doesn't actually reside on a website?) that might not be covered, this guide is fairly comprehensive when it comes to in-print, internet, and other media resources. For undergraduate students, graduate students, academic writers and general writers, the MLA style is easy to follow, fairly intuitive in approach, and comprehensible even by those not training in such styles.
