I bought this book for my niece and I wanted to read it before mailing it to her and my sister-in-law. I wished I had a book like this when I was growing up. I love all the details and pictures that goes with every experience. This is an amazing book and I wish every child at the proper age could learn from it. Thank you Karen Gravelle.

"The Period Book" is an excellent resource for young girls. The book has very clear and complete information about menstruation, and how to use pads, tampons, etc. It is written in terms that are simple and has illustrations that help clarify. This book helps lower anxiety by telling young girls what to expect. It is a wonderfully helpful little book to which girls can continue to refer. This book is a must. I bought it for myself when I was twelve. I am now 21 and purchasing it for my 13 year old sister. For mom's who don't want their kids to read it, I'm disappointed. The title says it all. Things you need to know, but obviously don't want to talk to mom about. I spent an hour in the bookstore reading all the different "growing up" books. Not one other came close.
Things this book has that no other did 1. Descriptions of different types, colors, and textures of blood that you may excrete. It tells you what is normal and when to go to mom because it's not normal. 2. An in depth drawing and description of a pelvic exam and the scary tools used. The best around. (yes this is necessary, both me and my sister are anemic and had full exams at the age of 12) 3. It tells you to get a mirror and look at yourself. SOOO important. Other books may say it's okay to do this, but this one flat out says DO IT. There is no need to be ashamed of your body. Mom's who think it tells to much about sex, it doesn't. And WAKE UP! We live in a sexual world, girls are coming into contact with pressures much younger. It's now normal to be a teen mother, a new highschool was built by me that had it's own daycare. Girls need to know these things. And there is nothing out of line in this book. It has black and white sketches of male genitalia and I would much rather be prepared than terrified the first time I saw one. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-27 10:42:50 EST)

I highly recommend this book for parents to read over with their preteen daughters (ages 9-13) who have not started their periods yet or have just started. It covers all the embarrassing awkward questions and answers that some kids are afraid to ask and parents are afraid to answer. I wish I had had this book when I was 12--my mom was old-school and didn't talk to me about this stuff (my sister told me what I needed to know). Anyway, it covers everything in a simple and fun tone that makes the reader want to read more and learn more. It is not inappropriate AT ALL as some other reviewers have said. It covers body changes and what to expect--everything a young girl NEEDS to know!

I bought this for my 12yr old sister, I had a hard time explaining things to her and my coworker recommended this. We read it together and was able to explain things easier while reading it. I recommend this to EVERY TEENAGE Girl.

I gave this book to my 10 year old. She took one look at the title, and said "thank you Mommy, you really know what a girl needs". She read through the book within two days. It's very straightforward reading, and explains the changes occuring in the female body and what menses is all about. A great recommend for any 10 year old.

I read the whole book first before giving it to my twin girls who are 10yrs old. It explains everything very well in detail. I learned a few things myself. This is a geat book for girls who may be to shy to talk about this with their parents.

This seems like a great, informative book, especially good for the girl who doesn't want to discuss ANY of it with you, even though you've offered and made yourself available! :P
I read it all, cover to cover, before bestowing it on a 12-year-old who would rather eat glass than discuss anything personal with anybody, and she was immediately engrossed! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-22 04:17:35 EST)

The Period Book sets just the right tone. It provides detailed, factual information in a non-threatening way. Takes away the mystery without sounding like a textbook.

This book is NOT the book you are looking for. Find the American Girl book on this subject and you will be so impressed and pleased with the beautiful way it handles this subject. Your little girls will become so confident and feel secure about the changes, rather than worried and confused by the inappropriate material that is in this book.
BTW, my daughter has been raised on a ranch and probably knows more about reproduction and sex than all the four and five star givers on here that think I'm being naive or "prudish" about this topic. The title of this book, "The Period Book", is SO misleading, and would cause many to believe it is a book for young girls learning about the changes coming to their bodies and why they happen. It is not, and the material in this book would be more for older girls or young women who have made the choice to become sexually active(and have started and learned about "periods", etc. so why this title?). Read it, word for word before handing it to your young daughters! BE VERY WARY AND SUSPICIOUS OF THE ONES ON HERE HYPING THIS BOOK AND GIVING GOOD REVIEWS!! THEY HAVE NO OTHER REVIEWS ON ANY OTHER PRODUCT FROM AMAZON! THEY ARE HERE TO HYPE AND SELL THIS BOOK! For instance, this book tells you that you can get pregnant if sperm is on a finger and it is put "inside of you". This is absolutely ridiculous in a book they are recommending to nine year olds to learn about growing up, emotions, body changes and starting menstruation! (As if getting pregnant is the only troublesome aspect if someone is "placing a finger with sperm" in them at their ages?) ThIS author has written supernatural and horoscope books before, and other odd titles and how does that even qualify her to write about such a topic regarding OUR kids and a company like Amazon to even carry it? Simply she is qualified because she has a 14 year old neice?! Give me a break! This book also goes on into how to position legs and behave for an OBGyn, birth control pills, etc. If you want a book that will make your daughter feel beautiful, confident, in control of her body and what happens to it, and proud to be growing up, look at the American Girl book here on Amazon. I literally threw this "period" book in the trash. You will too. To the author of this book: SHAME ON YOU for using clever illustrations, a misleading title, and presentation on such a poorly written, completely off the mark book for young girls. You are taking financial advantage of moms looking for that special book about growing up for sharing with their young daughters. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-07 09:12:42 EST)

My mother got this book for me before I actually started my period and truth be told, I WAS HORRIFIED. We picked it up in Target and I wouldn't even stand in line with her because we had this sketchy book about "gross stuff." But then I actually read it and it spoke to me. Periods ARE scary when you first get them and talking about it with parents can sometimes be a hard road. However, this book advocates girls getting to know their bodies and being open with themselves and parents.
Yes, the book does address sex. But I knew about sex back then (oh, 8 years ago) and kids definitely know about it now. It's not pornographic, it's educational. Girls often wonder WHY they are getting their periods and sex is apart of that. It's the body telling a female that they were able to have a child and now with the period the window of opportunity is over. It also advocates taking your period and being responsible. Taking care of yourself is the main issue in this book. There is plenty of information in the pages of this book that helped me when I started my period. Some stuff people just don't talk about which is unfortunate. It's good to know there is a community of females out there going through this as well. Anyone who negates the fact that sex is apart of periods obviously does not know what's going on with their bodies. And honestly, it's better to get the lines of communication going between parents and children and this book definitely does so. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-08 08:01:17 EST)

I'm very impressed with this book. As my 10 year old has begun to ask more detailed questions about getting her period, I chose this book. I was very pleased to find how straightforward and helpful this book is.
Covered topics include most changes with puberty, choosing sanitary products, a helfpul and thorough overview of the developing female anatomy, visiting the gynecologist for the first time, personal health and body image. Every chapter conveys the necessary information while being brief and casual in tone. Unlike some reviewers, I found the extremely brief introduction to sexuality was perfect and appropriate. The images of male anatomy are very simple cartoonish illustrations and in good context to the sections they appear in. The focus is not rushing into sex and encourages open communication with parents. This small introduction appears near the end of the book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-04 01:15:42 EST)

Even though my 10 year hasn't gotten her period yet, she loves this book. It holds her interest and speaks to her level. A great preparation tool.

Although the main topic is menstruation, this book covers all of the physical changes a girl can expect as she approaches and moves through puberty. It addresses, in an interesting and calm tone, all of the questions a girl might face, from where the blood comes from, to being patient if your breast development is slower than your best friend's. It is reassuring, thorough, and my 10-year-old couldn't put it down! I found her awake way past bedtime, reading this book. She is engrossed in it, and this has led to some wonderful discussion between us, on the responsibilities of growing up, and needing to respect your own body.
I would recommend this book for any girl over 10.who is starting to wonder about her period. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-22 01:44:40 EST)

I was extremely excited when I discovered this book. I wanted it for my ten-year-old-daughter. From reading other reviews, the book was suppose to be about girls becoming wowen (getting their periods). I was disappointed to find that the book contained too much information about sex and a picture of male genitals. I wanted my daughter to learn about her own genitals--not a male's genitals.
The book does cover a lot of what girls need to know about getting their periods. If you are not concerned about your young daughter learning about sex--get the book, but if you wanted information only about menstruation, this is not the book for you.
