Halley has always followed in the wake of her best friend, Scarlett. But when Scarlett learns that her boyfriend has been killed in a motorcycle accident, and that she's carrying his baby, she's devastated. For the first time ever, Scarlett really needs Halley. Though their friendship may be tested by the strain, like a true friendship, it will endure.

This is the first of Sarah Dessen's that I've read, and I'll definitely be reading more of her books in the future. I REALLY liked the style of the book, the way she wrote these characters, and the story here. I mean, this woman knows how to write teens in a way that many authors do not. Every word was just so completely real. It hasn't been too long since my teen years (I'm 24) and I can easily imagine how my friends and I would have felt and behaved in a situation similar to the one in the book, and what I imagine is pretty darn close to the way Halley and Scarlett were. I'm not going to lie to you people - the ending to this one totally made me cry. I have a love/hate relationship with books making me cry - on the one hand, it means that I got emotionally involved and really felt for the characters, which means it was probably a really good book; on the other hand, I don't much enjoy crying, especially if it's about something sad. I'm not going to spoil the ending, but let's just say that in this case, it was a worthy cry, and not one I felt resentment about. Go read this book, especially if you are a YA fan - it's a very good one.

I wasn't happy when I started reading this book becuase I figured out that this book is the same as the movie How to Deal with Mandy Moore in it. Character names and all. I thought that this book was a waste of money.

After reading The Truth About Forever, I backtracked to Sarah Dessen's second published novel, Someone Like You. Thinking back on this, I probably should have at least waited a day before plowing into more Dessen books, because I couldn't help making comparisons and switching so quickly between first person books can be disorienting. Of course, that didn't stop me in the least.
Someone Like You is very much an early novel, filled with firsts for Halley and her best friend, Scarlett. First relationships, first sexual encounters, first parties...right down to first pregnancies. This legion of firsts quickly pile up as an obstacle course for Halley and Scarlett's friendship, testing it to its limits as lifelong best friends switch roles and navigate through high school life with a baby on the way. Scarlett is the bold one, and Halley is the shy one, both suffering through reversals of very unexpected proportions, and while their circumstances shove them into different roles they are still very much pressing on each other and depending on each other at the same time. Halley is going through her first relationship with bad boy Macon, the best friend of Scarlett's unborn baby's deceased father (that, is quite a mouthful), and feeling the pressures of giving in to his relentless need for sex. Scarlett, with enough experience behind her to know better, stands as Halley's obvious moral compass, much to everyone's distress. When things start to come apart, the baby is on its way, and friendship is certainly the one thing that is going to keep them both on their feet. This isn't as well done as The Truth About Forever, with a rushed ending only the miracle of birth can supply. Halley and Macon's relationship is left teetering on a cliff of will they/won't they, leaving it up to the readers as to where Halley stands on the issue. The book is mainly Scarlett and Halley, as it should be, and their new addition to the party. Which is just fine, just not as satisfying as it could have been in the end. Have you ever had a friend who cared so much about you and would do anything for you? Well that's what the relationship between the main character (Halley) and her best friend (Scarlett).
Halley and Scarlett have been best friends since Elementary School, and now they are teenagers struggling through high school. With Halley getting a new boyfriend and the death of Scarlett's boyfriend there is a lot of drama surrounding the town of Lakeview. But there is quite a surprise that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This realistic-fiction book will take you for a full roller coaster ride. I thought this book was good. It wasn't a book that you knew what was going to happen. It wasn't too wordy where your tongue would get twisted; there were enough words for you to visualize and not overwhelm you. I would recommend this book for young adults. It has situations that teens deal with today and I think they would make a good connection with the book. I also liked that the book was a good length, it wasn't too short or too long. It was just right. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the summary on the back of the book. It gave away too much information, which ended up ruining the big surprise of the book. So if you were to read the book, which I highly recommend, then don't read the back of the book you will enjoy it more. Overall I thought Sarah Dessen did a good job writing the book. So if you're a teeny bopper looking for a good book to read then read Someone Like You! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-22 08:23:29 EST)

I wanted to be moved by this story about a girl supporting her best friend through a difficult time, but the main character Halley was whiny and self-involved, surpassed in the annoying category only by her clueless harpy of a psychologist mom. Everything from the bad boy love interest to the climatic prom night was cliched. The author would have done much better to focus on Halley's strong and interesting pregnant best friend Scarlett.

This book is so great. It deals with so many trials of teen life. It shows teens how fast everything can change and how one little mistake can change everything. Very well written and engaging.

A good friend of mine suggested that I buy this book for my thirteen year old daughter. I am so glad I did! She loves to read, but it's hard to find books that she really likes. Once she started reading this one, she didn't want to put it down. She was done with it in a week. Very nice message for teenage girls.

*sigh* Sarah Dessen is just about one of the greatest fiction authors today. Her books are just so amazing and real... and this one, Someone Like You, was no exception.
15 year old Halley has been best friends with Scarlett Thomas ever since she moved into the neighborhood during elementary school. And since then, they have been inseparable. Halley also used to be really close to her therapist mother. But the summer before Halley's junior year, things begin to change. She begins to break away and rebel against her mother. Scarlett's boyfriend dies suddenly in a motorcycle accident, and she discovers she is carrying his baby. And to top it all off, Halley begins her first serious relationship that could prove even more difficult than she thought it would be. What I loved about this book (and every other Dessen novel, for that matter) is how she captures the reality of a teenage girl and how difficult it can be! And the relationships portrayed here were just amazing. I was completely sucked into this book and I could not put it down. For Dessen fans, you will be excited to read this one and add it to your collection. For those who haven't read anything by her, pick this one up! You won't regret it! Some best friend pairs are comprised of one outgoing person and one introverted person. Such is the case with dynamic Scarlett and quiet Halley. Scarlett would never push Halley out of the way, but Halley is more than happy to be the girl in the background or off to the side. Her life is relatively okay at home and at school, and she doesn't really drift far from either place.
Most friendships have some kind of balance, some give-and-take, but this usually goes unnoticed until something upsets that balance. Tragedies suddenly make things shift and scatter. In Someone Like You, Scarlett's boyfriend is killed in an accident. Shortly thereafter, Scarlett confides in Halley that she is pregnant. Now it's Halley's turn to be there for Scarlett, to be the strong one. Within all of the chaos emerges another boy, but this one has his sights set on Halley. Things keep changing, and Halley's not sure she can keep up with everything. This book will be treasured by anyone who has had (or wished they had) a best friend with whom they shared their ups, their downs, their secrets, and their day-to-day routine. We should all be so lucky to have a friend be there for us as Halley is for Scarlett. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-15 09:18:35 EST)

i deffinatly think every teen should read this book. It gives you a story that happends to girls all the time. The author gives you quotes to learn from, and can use them in your everyday life. She makes you realise that your not alone, and that someone else is going through problems that you think no one else is. She also gives you relationship problems that shows you ways different types of girls handle them. so any teen that is going through trouble, should read this book. and they might learn some important things in life. -Rachel Brooker block 3 (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-02 22:00:39 EST)

I finished this book in two days, but it would have been less than one day if I didn't have to work. Welcome to responsibility. Anyway, I couldn't put it down. A powerful subject, characters I can identify with and a story line that kept me engrossed until the very last page. Author Sarah Dessen does it again, but any reader of hers has adopted the rare confidence that each of her books will and does deliver. A must read for Dessen fans!

Halley's life was always pretty normal. She got along fabulously with her parents and her best friend, Scarlett, lived across the street. The girls were inseparable and Halley shared every thought and feeling with her mother and with Scarlett. But things all changed the summer before she turned sixteen.
Suddenly, Halley's mother's presence is intrusive instead of comforting. She seems to want to be in on every little aspect of Halley's life, and Halley finds herself resenting that. And Scarlett is dating Michael, a boy she lusted after for a long time. Halley feels distant from everything in her life. At the end of the summer, though, Michael dies in a horrible accident, leaving Scarlett devastated--and pregnant, she soon finds out. She needs all of the help Halley can give in order to get through her pregnancy, after she backs out of the abortion her mother wanted her to have. Things are even more confusing for Halley when Michael's best friend Macon starts spending a lot of time with her. He isn't the type of person Halley would usually spend time with; he is dangerously wild and Halley is more wild than usual when she is with him. But with her mother pushing her to drop him, Halley becomes reluctant to let him go. I liked the relationship between Scarlett and Halley, and the ways they supported each other. I really liked Cameron, especially the images of him cooking for Scarlett and taking care of her. I also liked that Scarlett's pregnancy wasn't glamorized; she had all of the awful symptoms she could have had. I didn't like Halley's mother right from the beginning of the book; I couldn't believe how long it took for Halley to finally get tired of her. I also didn't like the ending of the book. It was too inconclusive for me. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-24 15:41:21 EST)

Well-written, especially for teens, but I was disappointed with the messages: Don't get pregnant with a guy stupid enough to get killed in a motorcycle accident and best friends stand by and watch even destructive behaviors from each other in order to be supportive. Very bad to teach kids these things. She should have put the baby up for adoption into a two parent, married family. When you bring a baby into the world, you do what is right for the child--period.

Have you ever been in a bad situation in life that has to do with your best friend? Teens go through lots, and usually get no credit for it. This book tells how a couple of best friends get through their troubles in life together.
This book takes place in a very friendly neighborhood. Two girls, Halley, and Scarlet become best friends, when Scarlet moves in across the street. Halley is the self-confident, good girl, and Scarlet is the good looking, bad girl. Scarlet ends up getting pregnant her junior year with a boy named Michael. Just when you think things can't get worse, Michael dies in a motorcycle accident. While Scarlet is trying to figure out what to make of this situation, Halley gets her first serious boy friend. Since Halley comes from a very strict family she has to sneak around her parents to ever get to see Macon, her new boyfriend. While new troubles arise, they still stay best friends. My favorite part in the book is when Halley goes bad. Since she now has a boyfriend, who is a party boy and gets her to do everything, she is dramatically changing. I personally like this part the best because she rebels her parents 24/7 and figures out what life has in store for her beyond her parents rules. The purpose of this book is to tell a story about friendship. Without a decent friend life can be hard. Like it says on the back of the book "Life is a terrible place to not have a best friend." And I absolutally agree with that. I enjoyed this book because it has to do with things that are happening around me, in my life. And being able to see the persons point of view opposite of what I believe, changed the way I feel about teen pregnancy. Anyone that enjoys a good dramatic book and mostly young teen girls would really enjoy "Someone Like You." It really is an amazing book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-06-22 14:16:44 EST)

Well i suppose it was an ok read, but just ok. I was really expecting more. This was my best friends favorite book so when she gave it to me for christmas, i wanted to read it. I was sadly dissapointed! Im sorry, but cigarette smoking bad boys who get drunk and go to parties arent the type of guys i'd be swooning over. I guess if i havent read so many beter romance/teen books, i'd say this was pretty good, but it didnt even really end well either. Her and the guy never even really talked at the end. I guess my big mistake was reading Twilight before reading this book. If you want a real romance book thats PG, and so amazing you feel it in your heart, i would highly recomend Twilight! That is the book i got my best friend hooked on! When i asked her which she prefered~ there was no competition. Twilight won.

Someone Like You
Sarah Dessen Have you ever had a decision to make that would change your life forever? Well, Someone Like You is a story about a very true friendship and a love story. The main characters are Halley and Scarlett. Scarlett has always been known to be the socially popular girl, and Halley has always been known as Scarlett's quiet sidekick. Scarlett has always been there for Halley through her most difficult times. Now, it is Halley's turn to repay her friend when Scarlett's boyfriend is killed in a motorcycle accident, and Scarlett is pregnant with his baby. That is when everything begins to fall apart. It becomes very difficult for Scarlett to decide what to do. Scarlett will need all the support she can get from her best friend Halley. Once I began reading this book, I could not put it down. There was always something interesting throughout the book that kept my interest. I have to say, this has to be one of my most favorite books. The characters are great. And Halley is always supportive even though she has so many things going on in her personal life. I really think it is easy to relate this story to real life. Sarah Dessen also has another book called This Lullaby, which you can relate to and also understand how the author likes to go through a teen's true feeling in life, and what a teen gets out of through each experience. Sarah really brings her books to life and her heart of writing into it. I love that. Someone Like You is a great "page turner", and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Realistic Fiction. This book really opens up your mind and your thoughts about life. It can teach you something if you really look into it and pay attention. This book is perfect for anyone who like drama. Although I didn't automatically fall in love with that Summer by Sara Dessen, this was outstanding! I like the way she created Scarlett and Halley as two totally different characters. And I liked the relationship between Macon and Halley. It made the book a whole lot better. It also teaches a lesson that you don't have to give to get and that a real friend don't come along very often (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-09-18 16:29:25 EST)

This is by far my favorite 'best friends' book, along with Summer Sisters. I loved how open and honest Halley and Scarlett were with eachother, and that they loved each other unconditionally and non-judgmentally. It's a kind of friendship I didn't even know could exist until I was well into my late teens. Fantastic book for young adults, not just because it's fantastically written and interesting, but because it shows you what real friendship should and can be.

Scarlett and Halley have been best friends since the day Scarlett moved in across the street. Though they seem to be drifting apart somewhat through the summer, one rare moment brings them closer together than ever.
Scarlett's boyfriend has been killed in a motorcycle accident, and now she knows she is carrying his baby. Scarlett has always been the stronger and more outgoing friend, but now it's Halley's responsibility to be brave for her friend. Not only does Hally have to be strong for Scarlett, but for herself as well, now that she has a pressuring boyfriend, Macon. --- This novel is a fantastic book for teens, because it shows you the reality of friendship. You need to be there for each other, and this book expresses just that. I highly recommend it, though be careful because it may bring a few tears to the eyes of some. This novel is heartwarming, and it truly shows you the importance of friendship. Even if you don't read this book, don't take your friends for granted! Who's your best firend? Your first love? The first person you lost? All of these people you will probably remember forever, I know I will! For Halley, there's no way she could forget any of these people. Scarlett has been Halley's best friend since they were 11, and are closer then any sisters I know, esspecially during their junior year. Scarlett's boyfriend Michael was killed the day after their baby was concieved, which obviously put stress on their friendship, but it was far from breaking. Then Halley got involved with Michael's best friend Macon, who skips school, is almost never at home and seems to live a secret life. Though she loves him, she thinks of Scarlett each time she gets close to giving Macon her viginity, but can she take that risk?
It is amazing how much I think I know, but I still learn new things everyday; whether it's with my pals or in my favorite book, I always spot something new. When I read this book a second time I realized so many vivid details that I had skipped, because the first time all the powerful emotions weaving through each character, conversation, and experience was overwhelming. I would recommend this book to any who's, "...had a best friend- or true love..." because it shows the power and strength of friends. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-25 15:02:47 EST)

Out of all of Sarah's books (I've read quite a few) none brings a learch to my heart when i hear it's name like Someone Like You does. This book was written so well and real. I couldn't put it down, i finished it in two days. I stayed up until late late hours reading it.
This book seems like it deals a lot with freindship. WHich it definitely does. Scarlett and Halley are best friends, and Scarlett has always been there for Halley, and now its Halley's turn to be there for Scarlett. And its hard for her. Even as im writing this i realize how cheesy and cliche it sounds, but in the book it is all very real and beleivable, none of those things. I thought this book would deal mainly with freindship. But it doesn't, it involves relationships, virginity, pregnancy, its actually just as much about that as about freindship. And once again, not at all fake sounding. I loved Macon all throughthis book, even though he was supposed to be made outas a jerk at some parts. It also deals with teenagers and how they deal with their parents. GREAT GREAT GREAT BOOK! i highly reccomend it! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 10:58:25 EST)

This book was so real that every girl would have gone through this stage at least once in her life. The stage when whatever your mother says seems like meddling and like she is trying to control your life or the stage when you can't decide that should you give your virginity to the guy, who you think you love and you think he loves you too, or you should still wait? For whom you are not so sure but you are sure that you are not ready, but still you are willing to do it so that you just don't loose the guy. But the thing is that like Scarlet said if you do it and he goes away anyway then you have lost more than just him! It's so unfair the way guys push girls to surrender their virginity and then make them feel guilty for not being ready!
I am sorry for not using Healy and Macon's names here but I just can't help seeing them as just two typical teenage girl and boy. Healy is a good girl although occasionally she feels resentment towards her mother for trying to control her life but still she is girl who would never dream of disappointing her parents. And Macon is a bad boy. He misses school, forges parents' and teacher's signatures, and does just about anything if he thinks he could get away with it. So you can see why Halley is so attracted to him. His wildness and carefree attitude attracts her and he is also attracted to her so the romance blossoms. That was the good part. But then they have passed the stage of just talking and mooning over each other so now Macon wants to go further. Halley is not so sure she is still ready for it. She might have done it if not for her best friend, who herself did it just once with a guy who died the next day and she turned up pregnant. Scarlet tries to stop her from giving into Macon's demand but since Halley doesn't want to loose him, which she thinks she already is loosing him, she makes up her mind to just do it. I know a lot of teenage girls decide to do it just to hold onto the guy not because they really want to and that's sad. This is also a story about two best friends who always support each other no matter what. How having a friend like Halley made a difference in Scarlatt's life? Scarlett's boyfriend died the night after she lost her virginity with him. Scarlet thought that life couldn't get any worse because she loved him but the she came to know she was pregnant after doing it just once!!!! But still she remained strong and decided to have the baby. Halley supported her in whatever decision she took without questioning her wisdom. Halley was not perfect. She was not a perfect friend either because when scarlet tried to stop her from sleeping with Macon she used her pregnancy as a weapon against her telling her to `look who is talking'! And in the delivery room she got scared and ran away and left scarlet alone. She was not a perfect daughter. She lied to her parents, sneaked out with Macon at night. But still she was good. At least she was too good for Macon anyway! And the fact that Macon couldn't forget her months after they broke up (as his girlfriend told Halley that he still loves her ), I could only guess it must be so only because she refused to give her virginity to him. If she would have given him what he wanted I am sure he would have lost interest sooner. The best thing about this book is that it is about real people with real problems. This book is the kind I like to read again and again. So just go and buy it and I promise you won't be sorry. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 10:58:25 EST)

This is a fun, yet thoughtful novel that can be enjoyed by teens as well as their moms. It would make a good selection for a mother/daughter book club. Readers will root for these characters who are going through some really tough things like teen pregnancy, hanging out with questionable people, and having to deal with parents who seem overprotective to their kids.
The teens are realistically portrayed. The story of the friendship between two girls who seem to be on different paths after so many years of doing everything together, is at times heartbreaking, but in the end very satisfying. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 10:58:25 EST)
