(Hide Review...)  The most thorough but easy to understand textbook that I have used so far in my Degree
Reviewer Permalink
This is easily go to be one of the best books that I have ever used for a core Mechanical Engineering subject. In each chapter the explanation of content is very thorough and the examples are explained in reference to the text, unlike some textbooks that skip steps or do not explain algebraic signs. It also has many sections explaining the real life relevance of the content and all the examples are very beneficial to improving your understanding.

Additionally there are videos that demonstrate certain fluid concepts very clearly. I am proud to have Munson's Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics sitting on my bookshelf. In addition the index is absolutely superb, if you are looking for a certain concept such as 'pressure head' you will find indexes to the content sections aswell as page numbers of the examples it is used (and explained) in. Buy this book over any other!

I bought this textbook so I wouldn't have to pay the University's terrible prices (more than twice the price actually). I received the book in the exact same condition advertised, very promptly, and for a much better price... I'm very pleased!

Good introduction to Fluid Mechanics. Covers everything needed to pass FE exam in Mechanical Engineering. Integral methods are better in Fox & McDonald and it is not as thorough as Wilcox. However, an easier read than the later two.

(Hide Review...)  A foundation book for the subject
Reviewer Permalink
In my search for books on engineering and physics, I must say this book is great for those of us garage-gadgeteers that need a little mathematical direction for design. The book is absolutely loaded with picture illustrations that depict the physics/fluid mechanics formulas in discussion. It's hard for someone to grasp concepts when all you have to look at is a bunch of numbers, graphs or symbols. The authors did a sweet job of making a complicated subject simple enough to get the non-geniuses interested and engaged in learning something very important. Not to say that this book is too basic for college use- quite the contraire, even seasoned engineers will find this book insightful, detailed and well-rounded.

The book is pretty well written for an engineering book. They keep incorrectly referring to centripetal force as centrifugal force which is the only real fault I have seen, and we have only found one incorrect answer in the back so far. The supplemental materials are very helpful and insightful like the website with the videos and examples. As with most books with a code they put the cd holder in the front with just a code in it which wont come out cleanly so it wont interfere with the way the pages lay which is quite annoying. Overall I think it is very useful for an introductory fluids book.

The book came in good condition and it was quickly delivered. Impressive. I bought two books from them, and the books come with a CD case but no CD. Not really a problem because I don't use it, but just for reference if you're dying to get your hands on the CD and not just the great material in the books.

(Hide Review...)  Great Book for Starting with Fluid Mechanics
Reviewer Permalink
This is how a textbook should be written. All topics are introduced with theory and background information to begin with the presentation of the material. After the theory and equations are run through, there are numerous *solved examples* to back up the theory. Examples of different types and with different approaches are all covered.

The end of chapter problems are well set up to really exercise your thinking ability and they really strengthen your comprehension of the material (since the challenging problems force you to go back into the chapter and expand on what you've already learned).

Interesting examples are all geared toward designing systems and the analysis of the performance of those systems.

In disagreement with one reviewer, the text is not wordy or lofty at all. All explanations are concise and to the point with no extra beating around the bush.

Overall the textbook is one of the best I've come across.

Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics gives an in-depth explanation of each concept covered. The problems following each chapter are congruent with what was taught. The book also comes with an electronic resource which allows the user to view movies and end of chapter exercise answers. All in all, this book and the included materials make learning the subject fun and easy to do.

Beware! This book is no serious science book, it's no more than a paper-incarnation of a big poor joke..

Unfortunately, it's the textbook being used in my fluid dynamics class and I had to buy this one. But if you have a choice, pick "Fluid Mechanics, Third Edition (Hardcover) by Ira M. Cohen (Author), Pijush K. Kundu (Author)"! It is easily understandable and nice to read and covers all important concepts and equations in a reasonable form!!

In contrast, this book by Bruce R. Munson does not even derive the heart of fluid dynamics, the Navier Stokes equation in general (just a washed down version in one coordinate system, written in components), nor does it derive the Bernoulli equation in an appropriate way to emphasize the restrictions and applicability.. Also, almost every equation is given in components, not utilizing vector (or tensor) notation... This hides the beauty and natural look of the equations and makes it just worse to read..

Overall, this is a really bad book, stay away from it!

(Hide Review...)  The most incomplete engineering book ever.
Reviewer Permalink
It's a good book it just askes me as a student to assume too much. Some of the problems at the end of the chapters are incomplete.

If i was to go about my life as a ME assuming random stuff i would get sued to a point of non-existance. This book does not teach good engineering practices.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent for starters in fluid mechanics engineering.
Reviewer Permalink
I bought the book by mistake since I was looking for a more physical introduction to fluid mechanics. However, once I started reading, I could not stop. The book is a pleasure to read. Every concept is explained crystal clear. No single step is skipped. Almost every concept is illustrated with one or more very detailed solved examples. It is frequent in most technical books to find how the level of clarity degrades progressively as you approach the end of the book. This is not the case. Every chapter up to the very end is carefully arranged and the level is maintained.

The book requires very little physical background since every topic starts from the very begging. The huge number of topics covered and easy reading makes it ideal for undergraduate students. The accompanying CD provides a browsable e-version of the book, more problems, some advanced topics and an extensive list of videos illustrating the book material.

The book follows a full engineering and practical approach. If what you are looking for is a more theoretical work or a more strict physical approach, you will better look somewhere else.

(Hide Review...)  Dont rely only on this book
Reviewer Permalink
If you are cursed with a poor professor and are forced to use the book to teach yourself the material, you will be sorely dissapointed. First of all, the book is extremely wordy and very complicated to understand. You are given a ton of equations when they talk about a topic but you almost always find no use for the majority of them. I find the later chaptersespecially to be all math oriented and I found fewer and fewer real world problems to help study for the exams which had real world questions. In general, I was very dissapointed with the book.

The study guide that accompanes the book is actually fairly decent and succint if not too short and they sometimes dont show important equations

This book is excellent for the engineering student. I recommend it for the beginning student of fluid mechanics or for the advanced student wishing to refresh his/her knowledge of fluid mechanics. The collaborative effort by the authors produce a beautifully explained text. The material is clear and concise and the additional software included with the book is of great use for illustrating important concepts.

The best thing about this book is the in-depth soultions to extra problems found only in the CD. So be sure to ask for the CD that accompanies the book; on top of that you get a solid fluid mechanics book that will support you through your fluid classes. A foundational understanding in fluids will also help in classes like Heat Transfer where most of the information is building on information learned in fluids. Good book, good examples, I like a lot of one of the author's (Okiishi) stuff.

This is a highly recommended fluid textbook for students interested in pursuing Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering. The inclusive of the CD-ROM which includes the e-text, videos and step by step solution to some review problems is an addition to what other fluid textbooks recommended by my university don't have.

The explanations of every topic is reader friendly and allows student to grasp the concept easily

If you are new to the area of Fluid Mechanics and need a text to learn the fundamentals, this book is the perfect choice. The text gradually builds on previous material and you almost never get lost reading it. Most equations are derived step by step with detailed explanations of the assumptions made and the mathematical modifications done. The organization of the book is suitable such that one can cover both theoretical and practical aspects of fluids in seperate chapters. I should also mention the wise selection of the example problems. They really help you understand what is going on. Finally, I believe this is an excellent book for any engineer working in the area of fluid mechanics.

I felt that the book was very helpful in taking my Fluid Mechanics course. We covered all of the book but the last chapter. I had a very poor teacher when I took the class, so the book was pretty much my only tool for learning the material. I thought that the end-of-chapter example problems were helpful and covered a wide range of topics presented in the book. The sample problems were also very helpful to me in doing the example problems that I was assigned. I felt that the book was about as clear as it could be for the diffculty of material presented.
