On This Earth: Photographs from East Africa

Nick Brandt depicts the animals of East Africa with an intimacy and artistry unmatched by other photographers who choose wildlife as their subject. He creates these majestic sepia and blue-tone photos contrasting moments of quintessential stillness with bursts of dramatic action by engaging with these creatures on an exceptionally intimate level, without the customary use of a telephoto lens. Evocative of classical art, from dignified portraits to sweeping natural tableaux, Brandt's images artfully and simply capture animals in their natural states of being. With a foreword by Alice Sebold and an introduction by Jane Goodall, On This Earth is a gorgeous portfolio of some of the last wild animals and a heartfelt elegy to a vanishing world.

This is a wonderful book with some great pictures of the African wildlife. The black and white photos were striking and the book appeals to 3 years of age to 65. It captured the African wildlife that I have had the privilege of seeing first hand on two occasions.

Nick Brandt's collection of photography is absolutely stunning. His work is much more akin to portraits than traditional wildlife photography. There is an intimacy between Brandt and his animal subjects which resonates in each photo. Page after page, "On This Earth" shows us the humanity and soul of these animals. Brandt has made a brilliant case for why these creatures have the same right to live on this earth as we do.

The day I got this book I spent almost an hour flipping through the pages and soaking in the beauty of these photos. It was then that I decided Nick Brandt was my new favorite photographers. He captures the African wildlife with so much power and natural beauty that it's almost unreal and his post-processing adds a whole other layer to the photos. I would suggest this book to any photo or animal enthusiast, it is quite simply one of the best photography books I have found.

This is one of the most beautiful 'coffee-table' books I have in my collection. The photos are outstanding, with clear, strong shots of the subject. The book is filled with full-page, high quality photography that will make you wish you'd bought 2 books...one to keep on the coffee table, and one to deconstruct and frame.

(Hide Review...)  Nice, but newer work is much better.
Reviewer Permalink
I purchased this book after seeing some of Nick Brandt's current work, which is stunning. These photos are less well-crafted than the newer ones, with far too many artsy out of focus, moody shots. I like moody, but I also like for there to be a focus on something meaningful and for me the center of the elephant's trunk or the side of his body doesn't do it when the rest is way out. Engaging shots such as a giraffe peeking through an entry door to a house would be fantastic, but the giraffe is out of focus. It's an "almost" shot, and as they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I know it is hard to let go of that shot that got away, but there are a lot of those in this book, like a photo of a lion and a giant boulder that is completely out of focus, and the lion turning isn't in an interesting pose at all. There are very good images as well, but the 2007 photos are MUCH better with better sense of place, a clear focus of attention to the subjects and far more intensity and emotional appeal. I look forward to a second book, if there is to be one. I don't think I'll spend much more time looking at this one.

This is one of the most incredible books I've ever seen. All the pictures touched me but the chimpanzees were remarkable. This is a book I share with everyone. My daughter and I look at it together all the time. I want her to learn that this earth is not just ours. We share it with these incredible animals. Something we seem to forget.

I own many, many photography/art books and this one without a doubt is my favorite.

The photography is simply stunning. Brant shoots his work on medium format infrared film and that is a great combination to use.

Don't even think about not getting this book, just do it.

Having travelled extensively in Africa and being a keen photographer myself, I was happy to find this title in one of the Dutch photography magazines. The book is apparently not for sale in Holland, so I bought it at Amazon's.
My collection of photography books consists mainly of black and white photography. I am sure buyers will love the images in this book as much as I do, allbeit some pictures are a bit over the top, due to the infrared film used. Nevertheless the photos are just overwhelming; it feels like standing there yourself!
Next to 'The Great Migration' by Carlo Mari (which has a different approach) and 'Pink Africa' (also by Carlo Mari, and obviously in color) this book is among my favorite books on wildlife in Africa!

This book is pure poetry and soul!
I cannot choose a favorite image, because so many are simply amazing!
It moves you!
To me a real photography book should generate emotions, and Nick Brandt does that very well!
This book has a unique style, black and white (or better, greys), with some peculiar effects, but to me, that just enhanced the magic.
Anyone who loves animals will appreciate this work of a true artist.
I totally recommend it.

This books contains a number of beautifully printed black and white photographs shot in East Africa. The images highlight the rich flora and fauna of the region, focusing on those animals one would expect to see on a typical African safari: zebra, lions, giraffes, elephants, primates, ostrich, rhinoceroses, and more. This book would make a nice addition to any collection.

Brandt's book is a brilliant example of a photographer with an idea realising it. I read elsewhere that he's only been taking photos for about 5 years! Apparently these are also Photoshopped - regardless, he still had to get up close, & is innovative. Beautiful photos.

(Hide Review...)  The Ansel Adams of Animals
Reviewer Permalink
In these days of digital photography it is seldom that we see a collection like this of black and white photographs with sepia and blue highlighting. And even more rare to see a collection of animal photographs that touch the soul like these. Mr. Brandt further concentrates on the animals themselves, usually at rest. Although looking into the eyes of that cheetah as he stares into the distance makes you glad that you are not a small antelope that he might convert into his dinner.

I don't believe that I have been struck by a set of photographs since Ansel Adams. You might call Nick Brandt the Ansel Adams of animals. As Mr. Brandt says in the Afterward, 'I am not interested in creating work that is simply documentary or filled with action and drama, which has been the norm in the field of the photography of animals in the wild. What I am interested in is showing the animals simply in the state of being.'

In this Mr. Brandt has done a superb job.

Absolutely beautiful! Has the feel of the 1800's when things were more wild and unknown. The colour form of the photo's enhances this feeling. Presents a close look at how majestic and beautiful the animals are! Such a joy to look at when you're tired of the city, people and the constant rat race of life. A peaceful calming experience! Loved it and look at it often.

I was privileged to attend a gallery show of Nick Brandt's work during a recent trip to Los Angeles, where I saw an advance copy of this book. Of course, no book can capture the full glory of the photos on the walls, just as no book can capture an artist's colors and brush strokes, but it still remains the most remarkable book of wildlife photography I have ever seen. Initially, I was drawn to the noble poignancy of the cheetahs and lions, but the most unexpectedly beautiful photo - a vision of a lost Eden - was of hippos in a tree-encircled lake. That this is rapidly becoming a lost world is apparent. The photos capture what words cannot, so I won't attempt to describe the beauty, sadness and dignity evoked by these images, except to say that this is a much more than a coffee table book. You will go back to it again and again and feel your own soul expand.
