Building Robots With Lego Mindstorms : The Ultimate Tool for Mindstorms Maniacs

Lego robots! Mindstorms are sweeping the world and fans need to learn how to programme them
Lego Mindstorms are a new generation of Lego Robots that can be manipulated using microcomputers, light and touch sensors, an infrared transmitter and CD-ROMs. Since Lego launched Lego Mindstorms in late 1998 sales have skyrocketed - with no sign of slowing down. Mindstorms have captured the imagination of adults and children alike, creating a subculture of Mindstorm enthusiasts around the world. The kits are now a staple part of engineering and computer science classes at many high profile Universities.
Building Robots with Lego Mindstorms provides readers with a fundamental understanding of the geometry, electronics, engineering, and programming required to build your own robots. Mario and Giulio Ferrari are world-renowned experts in the field of Lego Mindstorms robotics, and in this book they share their unrivaled knowledge and expertise of robotics as well as provide a series of chapters detailing how to design and build the most exotic robots. Mario and Giulio also give detailed explanations of how to integrate Lego Mindstorms kits with other Lego programmable bricks such asScout and Cybermaster, as well as with non-robotic Lego Technics models.
The LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Invention System (RIS) has been called “the most creative play system ever developed.” This book unleashes the full power and potential of the tools, bricks, and components that make up LEGO Mindstorms. Some of the world's leading LEGO Mindstorms inventors share their knowledge and development secrets. You will discover an incredible range of ideas to inspire your next invention. This is the ultimate insider's look at LEGO Mindstorms and is the perfect book whether you build world-class competitive robots or just like to mess around for the fun of it.

(Hide Review...)  Good book but not NXT

I bought this book to get a better understanding of the Mindstorm NXT system. While this book is very interesting, it does not cover NXT -- so the descriptions of the programming, the sensors, even the basic lego pieces do not match what you'd get in a NXT package.

MindStorms is an absolutely fascinating robot building system for children, adults, and those who don't fit well into either category. This book helps you delve more deeply into the principles behind making really cool robots with MindStorms. The opportunities for learning are just never-ending, and at the same time, the limitless fun anyone can have, from pre-teen to geezer, makes the learning very rewarding. This book helps open this potential.

This book takes you beyond the step-by-step instructions in the Constructopedia, and doesn't shy away from the physical principles behind robots, so it is suited for the more experienced and mentally mature builder. I use it to get ideas for things I can build with my 9-year-old son. It won't be long until he's ready to have a go at the book himself, though.

This is the best book on lego building techniques I've seen so far. The basic mathematical foundation is extensive and done without holes or errors, and the ideas, from the mechanical to the lego-technical are well choosen. Something missing in this book? yes, heavy treathment of diagonal matching gear, but it's partly explained why not... the book is so well written that you probably won't feel it like a loss..

Don't get me wrong. The models are cool. However, they usually need some tuning up before they are full functional. The majority of programs is written in NQC (as described in the book), however there is one in lego script which works only for newer RIS (2.0). I tried to contact the publishers and authors on many occasion but I've only managed to get my name on the spam list! This is not a nice way to treat a costumer.

I am very impressed with the book. It addresses robotics in a broad sense then drills down to the specifics of hobbyist robotics using LEGO and the RCX. Many tips and tricks, great insights into performance challenges and remedies, and lots and lots of cool project ideas! Great Book!

I am not ashamed to admit that I am 28-going-on-29 and I absolutely love this book. It is very well written and highly detailed. As a Mehanical Engineer with 6+ years work experience I was certain that this book wouldn't live up to the expectations that the first few pages that I read in the book store led me to develop. Was I wrong!! This book's simplified expanation of engineering concepts is unmatched. From Lego block geometry to gearing setup and programming. This book has it all if you'd like to go beyond the few missions that the mindstorm kit comes with. Don't be mistaken this book has no step-by-step instructions for building robots. It only introduces "snippet" to get your creative "juices" flowing. My understanding of Legos and their use has been greatly enhanced. To make things even better, the authors includes useful information on other Lego parts that are not included with mindstorm that are very important, i.e. light sensors, hydraulics, etc. If you are looking for a reference book to help you build better Lego creations, this book is it!!

This book is hands-down the best guide to learn how to build and program robotic creatures made out of Lego. The book does not provide step-by-step instructions, but rather covers in helpful depth all aspects of the activity, from the purely mechanical ones to ways of programming autonomous robots.

Of course, the key to it all is not only to master these individual techniques, but also to choose the best way to integrate them to create execellent 'bots!. This book does just that. Don't take my word for it. Ask around in www.Lugnet.com - the premier international Lego fan site.

Definetely not for the faint hearted, this book has incredible math equations, teaches just about every building technique, goes briefely into math, GPS tracking robotics systems, and programming. Not a book to miss if entering an contest. Don't Miss it, but don' be expecting a step one, step two, step three, easy book. This is a toughie.
