What to Expect the First Year, Second Edition

America's bestselling guide to caring for a baby is now better than ever: announcing a two-years-in-the-making, cover-to-cover, line-by-line revision and update of the 6.9-million-copy What to Expect the First Year, the bible for taking care of a newborn through the milestone of his or her first birthday.

The Second Edition incorporates the most recent developments in pediatric medicine. Every question and answer have been revisited, and in response to letters from readers, dozens of new Q&As have been added. The book is more reader-friendly than ever, with updated cultural references, and the new material brings more in-depth coverage to issues such as newborn screening, home births and the resulting at-home newborn care, vitamins and vaccines, milk allergies, causes of colic, sleep problems, SIDS, returning to work, dealing with siblings, weaning, sippy cups, the expanded role of the father, and much more. An updated cover and all-new black-and-white line illustrations complement the fresher book with a fresher look.
Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I know when she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year is brought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "What Your Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month's Checkups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May Be Concerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."

Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts, the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and sibling relationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many ways of stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers in Part Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on common childhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particular strength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition for both mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest recommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectives are controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), this book remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as they toddle through their baby's first year.

It's obvious this book is full of helpful facts, but I couldn't get past the constant insertion of biased comments from the authors. In the Six-Month-Baby chapter they call parents "week nerved" (mispelling is theirs) because they don't use the Cry It Out method. There is also a constant use of negative adjectives like a babies "pathetic" hand wave to get parents attention (also in the Six-Month chapter).
I may refer to this book occasionally, but I will not recommend it to anyone. It will probably collect dust on my book shelf.

First off, I would like to say that I was NOT a big fan of What to Expect When Expecting, so I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed What to Expect the First Year. Even my husband found himself reading it!

I received this book as a gift and absolutely LOVED it. It gives you developmental stages for every chapter by age. They break it down further to: what they should be doing at 1 month, 2 month, and so on, what they might be doing, and what advanced kids might be doing. I've found myself checking out each chapter so I can get an idea of what to expect (as the title states).

This book also includes illnesses, what to do, cuts/scrapes/etc. as well as recipes, different scenarios that come about and what you could do when facing the same challenges.

I can't tell you how much this book has come in handy when being a first time mom and your kid is sick. It calmed me down as I was calling the doctor because it gave suggestions on what to do in the meantime while you are awaiting your child's doctor's appointment. I'm not saying it's a cure-all, but it does give you enough information that it quells some of your worries.

I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking that this book is "THE GUIDE" to everything, but it is a very good resource to help you along your parenting journey. Obviously this book is not going to speak for all kids, but it certainly helps out.

I bought the next stage What to Expect the Toddler Years because I loved the first one so much.

We bought a whole host of books to help us be great parents to our first baby and this book was by far and away the best. It presents up-to-date research in a non-biased way. The explanations are detailed and interesting and not at all patronising.
I've read other reviews that find some of the conclusions drawn in this book unacceptable, e.g. that breastfeeding is best for the baby (proven by scientific research), so the conclusion is that most mothers will choose (and be able) to breastfeed, so there is a lot of information about breastfeeding. But there is equally enough information to make an informed decision on whether or not to breastfeed and the benefits and drawbacks of both formula and breastfeeding are listed.
I found the book to be open-minded and not too prescriptive. So, I read the information and chose to try some of the different methods mentioned. I didn't feel pushed to use or not use any of the methods, so for example, I used a mixture of formula and breast-feeding from 6 months to 1 year, which is one of the options presented in the book.
The research is documented in such a way that you feel well-informed about any choice that you make.
Those friends I know who have enjoyed this book are mostly intelligent, well educated and dedicated to providing the best care for their babies (the baby comes first!), without neglecting their own health or happiness and that of their husbands.

Great book for first time parents. No two kids are the same, so what worked for your fist child in this book may not work for subsequent children. The section on breastfeeding is fairly good but could use some more detail on managing breastfeeding problems.

All new parents want the magic answer to the question, "What will make my baby go to sleep tonight?" This book doesn't contain one magic answer but it has some helpful suggestions. Although on a "bad" night, you may exhaust all the suggestions and still have a crying baby--don't feel bad--it happens to everyone.

WTETFY contains answers to FAQs regarding whether or not something is "normal" and if/when you need to seek medical attention for your baby.

Honestly, I despise this book. I hate it even more than I hated, if this is even possible, _What to Expect When You're Expecting_. The cheesy puns, the creepy warnings, the annoying tone, the misogynistic philosophy (Lose weight! Pleasure your husband! Go to work if you must but if you do...! Breastfeed! Pump at work! Let your whole life revolve around your baby!)

But I also really love to hate this book and have had some great times doing so, as I am certain other parents have. The passages on sex are hilarious and make me believe, almost, that this book was written by aliens for aliens trying to pass as humans who have just given birth. I also find the breast-pumping at work stuff amusing.

Really helpful advice, though? Not so much.

If you want to begin your adventure out as parents constantly feeling like your child is not achieving the over-generalized "milestones" in this book, then buy this book.

In all honesty, while this book has some value, the negativity you are going to feel welling up because your four month old isn't doing pushups or rolling over or eating solid foods or whatever the book says is supposed to be happening isn't worth it.

My advice: Enjoy your baby. Talk to your doctor if something seems very amiss. Otherwise, let your kid grow up. Chances are pretty good things will turn out OK without consulting this book.

I don't know about you, but I have a tendency to hate buying whatever everyone else is buying, usually convinced that it will be very run-of-the-mill.

When I was looking for a guidebook for my daughter's first year, I looked all around, and even received a different book from a relative. Then someone lent me this book - and it's just the gold standard. Sometimes everyone buys something because it's the best! I really like the style of this book, the reassuring but informative tone, and the different sections assisting families of babies with different needs (special needs, adoption, etc). But mostly, I just like the information it provides on my daughter every month! A really good one - go get it.

This book helped me out very much. Being a first time, and a single mother, I had many questions that this book was able to help me answer. I would recommend it to anyone. It is thoughtfully laid out, and takes into account that many new moms don't have to read pages and pages on one topic. It gets right to the point, and I really appreciate that. Plus, the fact that it's written by a doctor was very reassuring that the advice in the book was good.

(Hide Review...)  Too rigid
Reviewer Permalink
By the time my daughter was six weeks old this book had disappeared into the maelstrom of dust bunnies and abandoned magazines under my bed. Skipping through it while I was still pregnant gave me a few heads ups about things I hadn't thought about or expected, being a first time Mom with no experience of babies (not even baby sitting) but once my daughter arrived I realised quickly that reading it to gain knowledge of what to REALLY expect was pointless. Their developmental time frame is way too rigid and I can see where it might cause less confident parents to really fear their child is developmentally behind if they're not doing the "right" things at the "right" time. It makes parenting a baby sound like a real chore, and leans too much on the problems you might have to solve rather than the joys you discover every day with a newborn. It also is heavily biased towards breast feeding and several of the feeding related articles just assume Mom is breastfeeding with little or no advice for formula babies. It's a mistake for new parents to rely on any book(s) for their primary parenting information, but I would definitely leave this one off the bookshelf.

I have found a lot of helpful suggestionsin the book but I certainly don't think it's the ONLY book to have on hand. I really liked the milestone markers, the way it had questions that real mom's would ask, and great first-aid advice. It's a great book if you're a run of the mill parent, but if you're looking for any "alternative" support (like questioning vaccines, using homeopathy, or are into attachment parenting) than this book isn't for you.

I looked at this book sooooo many times during my daughter's first year. I kept bookmarkers on the heavy use pages, like fevers, food choices, skin issues, and developmental milestones. It saved me many a sleepness night of worrying, although I also called the doc's office as needed. It's a great all around resource, particularly for first time parents. Most of parenting is a learning curve, so I didn't take everything written in this book as gospel. As a matter of fact, I found some of my experiences to be directly contrary to what was written in the book.

For example, my baby's first fever threw me for a loop. I called the doc's office and was told to go to the ER, but I also looked up the info in the book on fevers. One of the recommendations was to keep giving formula. Well, after getting projectile-vomitted on almost immediately after giving her formula, I realized that was a bad idea. This actually happened when I was in the ER, and the nurse looked at me like I had two heads when she realized I had just given my baby some formula. Despite me telling her that I was concerned about my daughter being dehydrated (as the book had warned), she treated me like Mommy Dearest for that. Another much nicer nurse taught me all about Pedialyte and other things to do for fever. Despite this experience with the info in the book, I have found the majority of what's there to be right on point. It was great to have so much info packed into one book. Phone calls to moms, grandmoms, sisters, and aunts won't hurt either.

For a book that is so pro breastfeeding, they have a lot of medical misinformation. For example, it indicates that your milk can dry up at 7 months, and kind of encourages early weaning. My pediatrician tells her patients this book is useless, and that there are many other better books out there. We're a doctor sears fan here, so obviously I recommend him, but I think you can find a better book even if you're pro cio, bottle feeding, breastfeeding, or anything.

I found it insulting that this book states that if I take a taste off my baby's spoon to get a new one for the baby. I'm the child's mother, am I really that germ filled? Does that mean we shouldn't kiss our babies so that we don't contaminate them? Also I don't see the harm in letting baby share your bed. And letting a little baby cry it out in their crib? Not my babies, NEVER. And once again they supply ridiculous diet recommendations. A sugarless first birthday cake? A little extreme I think.

An absolute must for the intelligent parent. This series is not for the paranoid (it will only make you more obsessed about where your child "ranks" amongst otherchildren. This great easy to read book series (what to expect when you are expecting,... the first year... the toddler years) does just what it says it does. It gave us a guide to lessen the shocks and surprises that my daughter kept in store for us. It also helps me to gauge if any social or developmental abnormalities are occuring so that I can seek help if neccesary. Because of this series (in good part) When my daughter had her first peanut reaction on her 1st birthday I knew what was possible, watched, caught it, and got her medical attention immediately. I now carry a life saving Epi-pen. If you are now paranoid , don't get the books. If you can be rational and want to be aware, then run to get it, love it.

Its a useful book for any new parents. It begins by explaining what essentials to purchase for your new born, breast feeding vs. bottle feeding, post parteum then it goes into depth for the first year fo your baby's development. It will be my guide through the first year of my child's life for sure.
