| The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the wildly popular The Little Black Book of Style, fashion authority Nina Garcia showed women how to think about personal style in an entirely new way. Encouraging readers to creatively assert their style identities, Nina showed women of all ages how to hone and self-edit a distinct fashion voice. With her style philosophy firmly out in the world, Nina decided to address the most popular question readers consistently ask her: Exactly what are fashion's timeless pieces? The One Hundred answers this question and provides women with a tangible style map to follow when planning a shopping trip and stocking one's closet. With illustrations from world-renowned fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo, The One Hundred contains the 100 items that Nina believes will never go out of style, and that have become absolutely indispensible for any woman reaching for her own eternal fashion look. About the Author With her signature eye for style, Nina Garcia is best known for her appearance as the unerring, formidable fashion judge on the hit show Project Runway. An elite authority in the industry, she has worked in fashion houses and in fashion media, with everyone from Marc Jacobs to Elle magazine and Marie Claire. Originally from Colombia, she now makes her home in New York City. Nina García es más conocida por su presentación como la acertada y extraordinaria jueza de la moda en el exitoso programa de Bravo Project Runway. Nacida en Colombia, es también la directora de moda de Elle, una de las principales revistas de la moda del mundo.

Questions for Nina Garcia Amazon.com: For someone who spends all day around beautiful clothes, it must have been hard to choose just one hundred items--how did you decide on the pieces included in your book? Nina Garcia: Yes, editing down to one hundred was a tremendous challenge. I also made a point of keeping in mind all the different personalities and fashion moods inherent in a stylish woman. The list is based on classic items that have been around for many years and will continue to be relevant for many years to come. Knowing something about these items are key to a woman’s closet. Amazon.com: What would you say to the many women who feel that shopping for clothes is a bit overwhelming, considering how many places there are to shop and, perhaps even more difficult, budgets to maintain. How does a woman begin to build the dream wardrobe you've laid out in your book? Garcia: A good way to begin the process is by being self aware of just what your own style truly is. Turning inward and identifying what one really likes and dislikes, exploring one’s inner fashion voice, and ultimately feeling inspired and building on your self esteem are base blocks for cultivating personal style; all topics I touched upon in my first book, The Little Black Book of Style. Amazon.com: Some women might feel that 100 items seems like a big number to tackle--could you name, say, five pieces that women should start off with? Garcia: The DNA of a wardrobe and perhaps the all time best items are:
Amazon.com: In your book, you say it's definitely ok to purchase basic pieces from discount chains. Any tips for acquiring high end luxury items if you're a shopper on a budget? Or are luxury/designer items even necessary in a woman's wardrobe? Garcia: The point is to shop for high value in items that will endure for many years, items that will never lose their relevance. Try not to focus on price and name brands. A truly stylish woman makes smart decision based on good taste, and the ability for an item to endure. Amazon.com: How has your experience as a judge on Project Runway shaped your outlook on fashion? Garcia: Being on the show has given me even more passion to support the young design talent that dots America. Also, it helps us all consider genius of the creative process. These young designers are the future of our industry, and having a forum from which they can develop their talent for all to see and appreciates is an amazing thing to be a part of. |

i absolutely love this book. full of creative advice and pictures to match. some things are pricey but you can always swap in your own take of it. and as far as some complaints that it's all been done, well maybe you're a bit of a know-it-all... i am pretty sure she wrote this book for women who aren't sure what they need to acquire a great look/wardrobe.
all in all - this book is inspirational and worth every penny. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 02:55:20 EST)

This book had some nice pictures and ideas, but I don't think it is the most helpful. It also rubbed me the wrong way telling me to buy mostly items that cost several hundreds to thousands of dollars to achieve style. We all know that style is not a matter of money, but of arranging pieces from your wardrobe in an interesting manner. I wish that Ms. Garcia would of mentioned some of her favorites some high priced to moderate priced. Ms. Garcia only mentions the high priced items. That is why I recommend the other book I read recently called: How not to look old: fast and effortless ways to look 10 years younger, 10 pounds lighter, 10 times better by Charla Krupp. Since I am in my forties I found this book much more helpful in improving my style and looks, plus the author Ms. Krupp recommends low priced to high priced items.
The other books I think worth checking out if you want to improve your style are: In the dressing room with Brenda: a fun and practical guide to buying smart and looking great by Brenda Kinsel; and Brenda's wardrobe companion: a workbook for getting the look you want, with the clothes you love by Brenda Kinsel. I enjoy reading books about style, but this one by Ms. Garcia is not the best and I do not recommend it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 02:04:50 EST)

Nina, what were you hoping to achieve besides capitalizing on your Project Runway fame? Do you really think "every" stylish woman must own these pieces? Oh, sure, you say this is only your take, but you also say "every" woman "must" own them. A caftan? An iPod? Why a white shirt? Sure, every "capsule wardrobe" list seems to include a little black dress, a white shirt and perfect black trousers/skirt, but what if you really look better in cream or can't seem to avoid spots of coffee no matter what you do? Havainas? Do you really want to tell me Carolina Herrera owns Havaianas--glorified flip flops? This is just a list of the catchy "it" items any halfway awake person could have culled from the last decade of fashion magazines and maybe one "classic" style book--the kind that tells you you have to have a white shirt, a little black dress, a trench coat, a cashmere turtleneck, etc....regardless of your lifestyle, climate, body type, coloring. Would-be stylistas, save yourself some dough. Get Tim Gunn's book and let him help you be yourself, not some magazine harpy's composite of "hot" items.

I'm amazed by Nina Garcia's actual talent here. I thought she'd just be a one note sort of harp, but she's actually very good at the bookwriting gig. Her tips here are great, and she's got a lot of know it all to offer everyone. This is one of those books you have to have if you are a fashion person, plus Ruben's illustrations are worth the price alone.

The One Hundred is, it is important to note, a listing of the 100 essential wardrobe pieces Nina Garcia feels are important for her. "A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own" is therefore a little misleading. That said, the book is common sense and fun. Some items...good not only for Ms. Garcia but for almost every woman who cares about style and clothing....are pretty self-evident: the well-cut navy blazer, the evening clutch. Others are a little more exotic and probably more suited to Ms. Garcia's New York, haute couture world than to the rest of us. The book did inspire me to do a little inventory of my own...what I have, what I don't have and don't want, and what I would like. The writing style is comfortable and casual...altogether a good book and a handy guide to those who want to have a wardrobe which contains those pieces which will last across the years.

Although this book does have some good ideas and tips, it feels like a constant reminder that we SHOULD be doing our shopping at Louis Vitton, Sax, and Bloomingdales. I was really hoping for more information that was addressed to the majority of us who actually work for a living. And although I love good, quality clothes and accessories, I don't see myself wearing Manolos, Jimmy Choos, or a Hermes scarf (but wouldn't I love them!) in my life as a teacher. There are still a lot of good tips, but I've found the Lucky style books more to my liking.

I was very impressed with this compilation of the 100 key essentials for a woman's wardrobe. Nina writes brilliantly and while reading you cannot help but want to go out and shop for each item as you read about it. The presentation and drawings are also adorable.

I'm a mother of three -- all under the age of 3 (no multiples). After three years of wearing maternity clothes, I am ready to spruce up my wardrobe with some fasion forward pieces. Nina's book is the perfect tool to put me on the path to being a "fashionista" mom.

This book is indispensable, IMHO. Garcia's advice is as classy as she is and Toledo's illustrations are fabulous. I found myself making a list of items that I am missing in my wardrobe and really do want. Thanks Nina for a wonderful book, which is really item 101.

This book covers the basics of what you need and why, but doesn't completely cover the topics. Although a fairly okay read, Nina Garcia's previous book, The Little Black Book of Style, is more helpful. However, my opinion may be biased as I am extremely into fashion and style, so I have high standards for these kinds of things. It should be mroe helpful for those that aren't as style-conscious, because people like me already have everything there plus other things that are more handy and look better on certain body types. For example, the little black dress it certainly stylish, but my skin tone and hair color do not complement black, for some odd reason. In that case, my perfect dress is the little red dress, or the little chocolate dress. I agree completely with Nina Garcia on shoes, though, and jeans and nail polish, so this book can be helpful. My rating: 3.7 (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-16 02:16:34 EST)

Nina Garcia's follow up book to The Little Black Book of Style is much more comprehensive discussion of the classic pieces that elevate one's wardrobe and lifestyle from run of the mill to luxurious. In the One Hundred, Ms. Garcia begins by explaining her philosophy towards life and what The One Hundred hopes to exemplify- that one should never settle for second best, and that one should always strive to feel as confident and comfortable as possible. The book then moves on to her list, which names things as simple and inexpensive as the LL Bean tote, to the most extravagant iconic handbags. But don't be fooled! This isn't just a list of classic and chic items. Ms. Garcia also strives to talk about the history and meaning behind many of her choices, as well as providing examples of each item she feels is essential to a woman's wardrobe. For instance, returning to handbags, she lists an extravagant but classic bag as a must, here she gives examples- the Hermes Birkin or Chanel 2.55. She then explains their history and how they turned into iconic pieces that transcended the "it bag" title. In doing so she provides the reader not only with a list of items that will help elevate their wardrobe from ho-hum to fabulous, but she provides the context in which to wear and use them. I would recommend this book to all fashion followers who feel stuck in a "disposable fashion" rut, and would like to add classic pieces to their wardrobe but don't know where to begin. Ms. Garcia has compiled a list of quality pieces that will last a lifetime.

I got this book because I really am having to redo my wardrobe from scratch. This book is entertaining to a certain extent, and the drawings are cute but at the very least I would have liked actual pictures of the items the author is talking about. The items are mostly beyond my non-Prada pocketbook, but that's my problem, not the book's. I think using the alphabet to organize the book was limiting in this instance, as some items looked as if they were fitted in because of it. It was fun to read about items that the glitterati love. But it's depressing to think that you have to be rich to be stylish...

I really enjoyed this. The bits of fashion history about the different pieces were entertaining. Ruben Toledo's drawings are fantastic - worth the price of the book alone. Let's be honest, this book isn't going to change the entire world, but it's enjoyable, educational, and sometimes that's just what you need. And I am so glad to have it!

I think Nina Garcia hit a home run. This book is my new fashion bible. I love that she mixes up high end with reasonable prices and each of the 100 items can be bought at all cost points. Her tips are great and the illustrations are so beautiful.

I saw Nina Garcia on GMA and immediately got on Amazon to purchase this book. I enjoyed reading the book as Nina put it in a nice A-Z format as well as had colorful illustrations. It gave me some good tips on how to be more efficient in managing my style and spending money on essentials rather than filling up my closet with a whole bunch of clothes and feeling cluttered with nothing to wear. I found myself bookmarking several sections and jotting down my "wish list" so to better manage my own wardrobe. Many of the recommendations Nina has in her book are definitely high end (not for those on a limited clothing budget), however she does recommend things like Hanes white t-shirts and such so a reader can learn to splurge on the timeless pieces and budget for items that do not require you to break into your retirement savings. Having said that, if I would make any recommendation for Nina's follow-up book, I would recommend she break her suggestions for each category into a high, middle and low end price points where she can give readers recommended brands or stores within their budgets to find that classic bag, watch, black dress, etc.

This book is perfect for women like me with a closet stuffed with clothes and have a hard time putting an outfit together. I am relieved to read that I have quite a few of the classic Ms. Garcia recommends. I plan to make a list of the other items I think will work for me and carry it with me so I know exactly what to look for when shopping. Since I'm far away from a size 4, I think I'll forgo the bikini, white jeans and the stilettos. Many of the suggestions do fit in with the lifestyle of a middle-class suburban mom with two young children. (Won't need the fur or long gloves any time soon.)
Ms. Garcia's writing style is fun and easy. An enjoyable read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-15 06:20:00 EST)

This is the best fashion/style book I have read so far (and I have several, including forty year old classics like Dariaux's). You cannot pare a wardrobe down to 10 looks (Gunn); there's more to style than that, and Garcia knows it. What I like about Nina's second book (I liked the first one, The Little Black Book of Style, too), is that she encourages us to develop our own style, while giving you concrete information about classic styles (e.g., the best opaque black tights)or might be a little leery about trying (e.g., how to discreetly wear fishnet stockings, including nude ones; Fry boots, with jeans tucked in; vintage brooches). I received it four days ago and have already read it twice...that says a lot. I enjoy Garcia's writing style, confidences about her own wardrobe and work as a fashion editor, and admonishments about how not to cheapen a look (e.g., the wrong way to wear animal prints, fishnets). I will be on the look out for any style guide she writes and have a new respect for her opinions on Project Runway. She's also very good about distinguishing between style and trends, and encourages us to develop our own look, working with what we have or by slowly acquiring the classics, instead of becoming a constant shopper fashion victim, with the latest disposable, expensive 'it' bag or jeans. I also loved the illustrations by Toledo--fun and elegant!

Don't bother with this one. Only about 10 are really classic or stylish. Animal Print? Blackberry? Cowboy boots? Fishnets??? Ipod? Champagne? Passport? I really thought there would be more about fashion and less about Sex and the City.
The pictures are cute and the organization is nice. But all in all, it is a waste of time. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-15 01:14:57 EST)

If you're a Project Runway fan, Nina Garcia needs no introduction. Her new book, the One Hundred is on the 100 things a woman of style needs in her wardrobe. Some of her choices are surprising: faux fur?, others I disagred with: unless your backside is so small that a large butterfly can't land comfortably on it you have no business buying white jeans... but overall the book is fantastic and funny and of course, it has the fabulous illustrations by Rueben Toledo. I've read a lot of fashion books. This one is a keeper. It's going on my shelf right next to my copy of Tim Gunn's book.
