The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

Are you and your spouse speaking the same language? While love is a many splendored thing, it is sometimes a very confusing thing, too. And as people come in all varieties, shapes, and sizes, so do their choices of personal expressions of love. But more often than not, the giver and the receiver express love in two different ways. This can lead to misunderstanding, quarrels, and even divorce. Quality Time Words of Affirmation Gifts Acts of Service Physical TouchDr. Gary Chapman identifies five basic languages of love and then guides couples towards a better understanding of their unique languages of love. Learn to speak and understand your mate's love language, and in no time you will be able to effectively love and truly feel loved in return.Skillful communication is within your grasp!Click here for the Study Guide for Spouse and Group Discussion
Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.

How do you discover your spouse?s ? and your own ? love language? Chapman?s short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like ?hoping the feelings of affection will follow later? a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

The point of this book, that different people need to be showed love in different ways, is a solid one. I've been telling my husband that for years! I certainly wasn't telling him as clearly as Chapman describes in this book, though.

I appreciated being able to clarify my thoughts about expressing love by reading this book. Chapman's ideas weren't revolutionary to me, but were reassuring nonetheless.

Aspects of this book didn't work for me. The individual stories were a bit simplistic, full of couples whose marriages seemed totally on the rocks until they tried this easy love language method that fixed everything in their lives. The book itself, with its pages of pink puffy clouds and flower illustrations, looked a bit like a cheesy greeting card, and as a non-Christian I skimmed over the Bible verses.

So there were some parts of this book that were better left ignored, but the basic idea resonated with me, and gave me a handful of concrete ideas to apply to my own relationships with my husband as well as with my children.

While I may be a little premature in my comments about a book that I have yet to read, I CANNOT wait to begin this life changing adventure. Based on the comments here, it looks like I will NOT be disappointed. I was lead to this book by my friend Ami, who says (and I quote):"This book changed how I interact with EVERYONE. It changed who I am and how I see everyone in my life and it helped me to understand why some relationships don't work, and some do. You'll love it!"

With this kind of testimonial, how could I NOT give it a try?!?!?!
I have just ordered the book, so I will be back AFTER this exciting read.
I can't wait!!!

This book is excellent and I would recommend it to all married couples, couples thinking about marriage and anyone in a relationship. It breaks down our communication preferences in laymen terms - This is definitely a book that will make you go - Hummmmmmmm. So that's it! You will find that your relationships will improve if your practice the suggestions. My husband and I have both read it and purchased 15 additional copies for our church members. My husband and I had an excellent relationship before reading this book and The Five Love Languages has now enhanced it. Thank you Mr. Chapman!

it was my husband's idea to read this book together when we first started dating. boy did it make a difference!

the book actually reads really fast. i would recommend taking the test first to find out your love language and your mate's, then read the respective chapters on those 2 languages first, then read the rest of the book.

this should seriously be a requirement for engaged couples.

without having read it, my husband and i would be miserable.

This is such a simple concept and very easy to put into practice. If you have a horrible marriage or just a so-so marriage, read this book to immediately start improving your relationship with your spouse. My husband responded so quickly I was amazed. Not knowing our respective love languages previously was the whole problem for us. Now that is all in the past and we couldn't be happier. (My husband has still not read the book, so he's not sure what hit him, but he is reaping the benefits from me and returning the love to me in the way I need it.)

Someone lent me this book. I loved it so much, I bought a copy for myself. I think everyone should read it who has or wants to have a relationship of any kind with anyone. I liked it so much, I bought the Five Love Languages for Teenagers and The Five Love Languages for Singles.

Mr. Chapman claims that there are five primary love languages: words of affirmation, physical touch, acts of service, receiving gifts and quality time. Although we all need to be loved in all the ways, there is one love language that is our primary love language. If we are not loved in this primary love language, then our love tank becomes empty and we feel unloved, even if all four other love languages are being spoken to us.

So my conjecture is this may be then, why someone with the love language of words of affirmation would 'fish' for compliments, because they have a deep need to hear affirming words.
Happy reading!

Everyone has heard that opposites attract, but then how do these two opposites communicate after all the excitement has worn off? I learned that my love language was quality time talking together and my husband's was words of affirmation. I would have never figured this out on my own. I have been giving this book as a wedding present because I realized that young couples need it as much as couples who have been married 25 years. I've been told that it was the favorite gift one young couple received!

My ex (note ex)and I went to a marrage counselor and she recommended this book. It resulted with him buying me things (gift giving) and asking if I needed anything at the store (acts of service). My ex was very content thinking he was following the book and making things better and it gave him the excuse to avoid the real problems. Neither the counselor or my ex listened to the real issues and couldn't understand why things wern't getting better. People should raise their standards and not marry anyone who doesn't know the ridiculous basics in this book....be nice. It kept us from getting to the real issues but I had nice gifts by the time I'd had enough and left.

my best friend recommended this book when i was still engaged, in my 20s. I am so glad I read it... my relationship with my boyfriend transformed so much! we both read it and started recommending it to all our friends, even parents and relatives. they all still thank us today!
I am not going to sum up its content, as you may already know about it, but I just want to express my deepest enthusiasm and thankfulness to the author of this book, who - perhaps without knowing it - has helped (+ still does) thousands of families.
It is a must, whether you are still single (you need to know more about love, to be prepared when it comes, right?) or just going out with him/her, or have been married for years. Believe me, I have read quite a few books on the subject and this is The BEST.
I had a chance to read it again last week, 10 years after the first time, and I am still dazzled how insightful it is, how many things I had already forgotten, and how it can still improve the quality of my (happy) marriage!
It is never too late, when your marriage is in deep trouble, give it a try, even if you think you are OK, give it to a friend as a present and you will be amazed how it can change your/their life. All you've got to do is open your heart and be willing to listen. All the rest (and sometimes it is a Miracle indeed) will come on its own.

The book is a quick read. It is written in a straight forward kind of way and makes sense on an intellectual, as well as an emotional level.
I truly liked the fact that he is pointing out the differences between true love and being in love; and does so much better than any other book I have ever read on similar topics.
I found the assessment of the love types very accurate. It is, however, not that easy to follow this advice, as most people lack the honesty, maturity and will power to keep up the work.
I also found that the advice may be easier to follow if one is Christian and a church going person. For those who are not it is probably going to be harder to implement or even understand at times. Example: Consistently fill the "love tank" of a spouse who is cruel, cynical and mean, in hopes that this will permanently alter his behavior eventually.
I will have to say, as a Non-Christian, it is very difficult to apply the "keep-holding-the-other-cheek" philosophy.
Still, I loved the book and I am actually making the necessary changes suggested.

The examples given are make you open your eyes and see things from a different perspective.
For guys trying to read a relationship book, this makes it simple and gives you a clear guide on what you should and should not do; I believe that this style works, it might seem overly simple with a "Love Fuel Tank" but it does work.

I really enjoyed this book. It helps to know how my children feel loved. I have a child that feels love by receiving words of affirmation and another that feels love by physical touch. I especially liked the chapter about discipline. I don't think parents discipline enough and when they do, they do it wrong according to this book. There is a way to discipline while still showing love to your kids. It is our responsibility to discipline our children if we want them to grow up and be responsible adults. If we don't discipline them, we are only hurting them in the long run.

In this book Gary Chapman teaches you about the five languages of love. Each one of us is generally dominated by one love language and a lesser mix of the other four. Two people who share the same dominant love language generally get along much better than those dominated by different ones.

I found this book fun to read and very insightful. I'd never really thought about our 'love personalities and types' before, and Gary Chapman's book has made me think about these things and opened my eyes as to how to have a more deep and meaningful relationship. It really does dig into an area of relationships that most of us didn't even really know existed.

Talk about something running out of steam. Was this guy being paid by the word? There was some incredibly repetitive stuff, and somehow it got moreso as it went along. I also object to the frequent Bible references. Cite some other things. Sure, even people who do not share the Christian faith might agree that Jesus was a great teacher. However, he's not the only teacher. The only footnotes throughout were to offer chapter and verse.
So, okay, there's decent ideas here. They could have been delivered more concisely. Additionally, why include a chapter about the five love languages and children? There's a whole additional book dedicated to that topic that the author is happy to sell. Not everyone is interested.
Yes, I'll find a way to adapt a few applicable things I've learned in my reading. One wants an investment of time to be worthy. I'd have felt the read was a more rewarding experience had I the meat to read, not filler, and would have been done reading it and onward to something else enriching. Or spending the time putting some of these ideas to use.
The questionaire at the end, useless in Kindle format. Miniscule text in low-contrast faded text. It cannot be read at all.
Overall, a high price to have paid for something that should have merely been a Readers Digest article. The book editor did not earn the paycheck.

I could have saved myself much heart ache and pain if I had read this book 20 years ago. I could have spaired myself the pain of being a victim of an affair and also the pain I caused my wife by becoming withdrawn and angery by her lack of attention towards me. If you truely desire to save your marriage, you must read this book. It will work miracles if you and your spouse will take a few minutes each evening and read it together. If they are unwilling, then read it yourself. It can still save your marriage if just one of you is willing to read and understand it.

I loved this book because it taught me so much about how to understand and communicate with my significant other in his own language. I would never have been able to identify it on my own, much less know how to respond even if I could identify it. I have given the book to several other couples who have put it to good use. Of course, you have to have a significant other before you can put these principles into practice. Want to know how I found my lover? I bought Baby Boomer Bachelorette: How to Have Sex at Least Once More Before You Die and went into action. Even though I am well over 50, it only took me six months to find and become engaged to my fiance. We are so happy and, if you want to feel the same way, buy both these books.

For those who are clueless, ,which includes just about everyone, this book does show that our differences need not thwart our caring for one another. It is carefully researched and presented, and it is helpful if one pays attention!!

My husband and I read this book with several other couples during a marriage enrichment class. It helped us tremendously and we didn't even think we had any communication issues! I have recommended this book to dozens of people, and they all say what a positive impact it has on their relationships. It's definitely a must read for anyone interested in learning how to truly communicate with and express the right "love language" to their spouse.

I was introduced to this book by a woman I was dating. Had I know how successful the book would have eventually been for her I would have left at that moment. She was going through a divorce, and now believes this book saved her marriage.
Either way, I finished reading the book as a single man. It did teach me a great number of things that were helpful to me. Granted a number of things in the book are semi common-sense, but it offered a different take on many every day things most people overlook these days.
The things I learned I have applied in everyday life. The few successful relationships I've had since reading this book have been absolutely amazing. The vast majority of relationships I've had since reading this book have however have ended in disaster. Most women I have dated or even had a connection with have, for the most part, shown displeasure or, in a few cases, disgust at my knowledge of my emotions and "love languages".
I do believe that one day the things I have learned may make a marriage great for me. But, for now, as a twenty-something single man it's just wreaking havoc on my love life.
I would recommend, and do, the book to anyone who is married or in a long-term commited relationship. To those of you like me however, that just aren't at the point in life where settling down is a top priority, I'd advise avoiding this book entirely.
