I bought this book for my son who will be 21 months when baby #2 is due. I love that there are no words so we can make up our own story at a level he can comprehend. It's wonderful to see the mommy breastfeeding and the daddy changing diapers, cooking, and dressing the baby. The amount of help the older sibling provides is great- showing his new baby how a rattle works, helping daddy cook, washing the baby with his mom, and reading to the baby. All in all, it's a perfect book for our family!

Our little boy is 9 months old-- and in just 4 more months, he'll be a big brother! We've been looking around to find a book that we could share with him that might make the transition a little easier-- and we found it, totally, in this book.

We have several other books that are just a little too old for our baby-- they'll show the big brother changing diapers or things like that. This big brother will still need HIS diapers changed once the new baby comes!! So this one is perfect because it shows things from a toddlers point of view. The pictures of Dad wearing a bjorn and of Mom nursing the baby are just two great examples of how perfect this book is for today's families. We are so grateful for this book!

If you have a baby and are expecting a baby.... this is the one! Don't look any further!!! Good luck and congrats! :)

My almost 2 year old and I just love this book. We make up our own story to it (it doesn't have any words), and it changes a little bit here and there. But I like that because I can point out different aspects of the situation to her. I like that it shows the mom breast feeding and dad helping out since that is similar to our situation. She loves it and I have seen her mimic it (holding the baby, helping get diapers/wipes, etc.) with her brand new baby cousin - without being taught or asked! She just saw the new baby and did it - like the big girl in the book. It is really amazing how children can learn from pictures while they are working on learning the words that goes with them.

I was very disappointed with this book. Unfortunately I purchased "Waiting for Baby" in the same order but have not received it yet. The product description does not state that it is only a picture book.

it takes a little imagination because there are no words to the book. but my son (2 years old) and i enjoy flipping through the pages and making up our own story (stories).

Our 27 month old son loves this book and its companion, "Waiting for Baby" by the same author. We talk about what's going on in the pictures and he's always noticing new things, even after repeated readings. I like this book because it presents the introduction of a new baby as a natural, happy event. The mom is pictured breastfeeding not once, but twice and the dad is shown changing diapers, dressing the baby, strapping on a baby carrier and cooking dinner. It is rare to find a book which depicts both parents so actively engaging in the the care of a newborn. And the illustrations are just gentle and sweet too. Great little books for anyone with a young child.

Maybe it's my preggo brain, but I did not realize that this was a picture book with no words. I never would have purchased a picture book for my 2 1/2 year old. The pictures themselves are okay, but some words would have been nice.

This is a cute book, but with no text. It's great for talking about new baby with siblings. There are some new books out called "Baby Brother" and "Baby Sister" which are good for getting them ready for a new baby. "The New Baby" has a great story and is great to read to them. Now "The New Baby" comes in a sticker book also. It depends on what is more important to you.

My DD is 2 1/2 an I am expecting a baby in August. This book is a great conversation starter. I am planning to breastfeed, and it tastefully shows the baby nursing, something which DD has been curious about on the rare occasion she sees someone nursing a baby. If you are against BF, this book may not be for you. I've taught my DD that babies can drink from their mommy or a bottle. In addition to the nursing, it shows the older sibling involved with "helping" in different ways after the new baby comes home, and closes with the older child having story time with Mommy and Daddy after the baby has been laid down to sleep, showing that they are still special and very loved just like the new baby.

The pictures are colorful, and I like that the kids are fairly gender neutral, so if we have a daughter when or baby-to-be is older, we can read this book to our son the same we we are reading it to our daughter.

DD loves talking about the pictures, and talking about her new baby brother, who is not even born yet.

Quite frankly, if you have to have text to be able to talk about the pictures with your child, don't buy this book. This was obviously designed for parents who want to help teach their toddlers to observe things visually, think about what they are seeing, and then communicate that to those who are "reading" with them.

Not to thrilled with this purchase. No words and there is a breastfeeding mom on a couple of pages. Fine but, not what we were looking for to introduce our 2 year old to a new child.

Pros:
1) Presents attachment parenting perspectives - mother breastfeeding, father invovled (cooking dinner for nursing Mom and sibling), involved grandparents, baby-wearing by the father, etc.
2) Presents the arrival of the baby as a happy event for the family and older sibling. Other books deal a lot with the sibling being jealous or angry about the new baby and all the things the baby can't do yet. This book avoids those topics so it's perfect if your child is happy or neutral about the new baby. Why introduce those concepts if they don't apply to your child?

Cons:
1) This book has no words - only pictures. While I like the notion of being able to present the "story" in your own way to your child, it would be nice if there were some words for when your tired...ha ha. Maybe just neutral things describing the pictures or something.
2) The pictures in the book are very cluttered and, in my opinion, too busy for a small child. My son (just 2) is a little distracted by all the other stuff in the pictures (toys, et) and sort of hardly notices the baby in the pictures.
3) Oddly, the Mom in the book often is seen headless...lol. Sounds strange, but often only her arms or body are pictured. Kinda strange. Same is true for his version of the book about pregnancy. Just headless Mom with a big bump! Not a big deal though. Just an oddity.
4) The book presents a grandma and grandpa. If your child doesn't have both a grandma and a grandpa (death or divorce), this is a tough one to explain around - this also came up for us in their version of the pregnancy book. Also the grandparents are quite elderly and look nothing like what my child thinks of when he thinks of his grandma.

All in all, it's a fine book. We use it and it has it's place. I love the goal of the book - attachment parenting approach - letting parents present the idea of the baby to the child in their own way. I just think it could have been executed a little better.

We're expecting our 2nd baby (a boy) in 5 weeks and I bought this book for our 22 month old daughter in an attempt to prepare her for what's going to happen. Time will tell (and another review will probably never be written =-)) but so far, she loves this book. It doesn't include any verbage so you can make up the story as you see fit and point out what you want to point out without having to follow someone else's ideas about what it'll be like to have a new baby in the house. She loves the book and she reads it at least a dozen times at each sitting and recites back to herself what I've read to her when she's just looking at it on her own. I think the illustrations were great for telling the story.

I decided on this book based on the reviews. But I don't recall any of them mentioning that there are NO WORDS in this book. The pictures are cute and if you're a keen storyteller then I'd say this is the perfect book for you. I however, would rather someone else provide the words since my tired brain isn't feeling creative lately. My son doesn't touch this book but he loves the one his Nana bought for him, which is the other book I was considering..."I'm a Big Brother Now." That's the book I recommend you buy.

I absolutely adore this book! The lack of words (which my toddler rarely sits still long enough to hear anyway) means that you can make up explanations for and initiate conversations about the pictures that make sense for YOUR family.

I was delighted to see the emphasis on the positive aspects of having a new baby, as opposed to the "Mommy and Daddy don't love me anymore and I hate the baby" message a lot of these books seem to bear. Why plant negative ideas in your toddler's head when you can show them what a happy experience a new baby can be?

It's also wonderful that these pictures show an active and involved dad--dad takes the kids for a walk, daddy cooks dinner while mom nurses baby, dad changes baby's diaper, etc. So many other books seem to have forgotten about dad, and in my household (where dad takes equal responsibility for parenting duties), it's really important that dad be shown in a postivie light in these books.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who's preparing to add a new member to the family and wants to prepare their prechooler for all the fun and love there will be in the house after baby's arrival. Top-notch!

Our toddler son loved this book immediately. The illustrations are great, and really show you lots of different things that will happen once baby arrives. It doesn't have text, but for our toddler son that is perfect. We can spend loads of time talking about the pictures and identifying with what's going on in our house. It's really well done.

As a mom to a toddler and a newborn, this book has been wonderful. Yes, indeed this book has no text, but I believe the point is to open up a dialog between the parents and the toddler. I wanted a book aimed at younger babies, and that dealt with breastfeeding. My 21 month old had a hard time with my breastfeeding. She didn't understand at all. I sent my mom home for this book. We read it in my hospital bed and talked about the mom nursing. I wish I had done it before the birth to prepare her, but I don't think she would have understood. The book was a lifesaver. As said by other reviewers, most books deal with jealousy, and are really kind of brainwashy about being a "helpful" big sister, and assurances that mommy and daddy love everyone. I didn't want to introduce this concept to my daughter and to plant the idea of jealousy or doubt.

I was disappointed that the book was only pictures and that there was nothing to read to my toddler.

Our son is 2 and preparing for the arrival of new baby. "My New Baby" and "Waiting for Baby" by Annie Kubler are by far his two favorites (out of about eight books on the topic that are written for toddlers). Illustrations are fantastic, and we are happy that the book has no words as we would most likely not use them (we don't speak English to our son, and the absence of the words leaves all members of our family open to creating the story that fits our life most). We love the fact that breastfeeding is pictured (discretely) and that the whole family is portrayed equally involved in the life with the new baby. Our son initiates the readings on his own, about twice a day, and seems genuinely excited about the baby.

My son, 2 1/2, seemed to enjoy this book but I thought it was kinda babyish for him though the manufacture states for preschoolers.

I purchased 4 books along this theme to help prepare my 2 year old son for the impending birth of our daughter. This one is hands down our favorite. It's the only one he actually asks to have "read" to him. It doesn't have any words, but each picture lends itself to discussing different baby-related situations. From the baby shower, to the baby crying and nursing and taking the baby out for a walk. On each page the older sibling is portrayed in a an important role, helping to unwrap presents, helping to prepare dinner, helping by holding a toy for the baby. It's great!!

It's good to see a couple of pages showing Mom breast feeding her baby. Maybe parents might like to create their own version of telling stories, but my guess is that very young children love consistency and being able to see words in a book along with the pictures. Without text, I doubt anyone will tell the story exactly the same way every time the book is "read."

My daughter's guess was that her son didn't like this book as much as I'm a Big Brother, because each page in this book [My New Baby] may be too busy with all what's in each picture.

I did quite a bit of research before purchasing a book about our new baby for our 14 month old son. This book had good reviews, so I thought I'd give it a try. Our son loves it! The pictures are great. The pages display family members (mommy, daddy, new baby, and small boy) doing everyday activities like walking outside, taking a bath, playing with toys, eating dinner, going to bed, etc. The book has no text, so you can use your own words to describe the illustrations to your child. I also like that the book shows the mother breastfeeding the baby. Of the "new baby" books I've seen, this is the best of it's kind!

I purchased this book as a gift for an 18-month-old with a new younger sibling. The illustrations are lovely, and I think that the lack of text is a good thing in this case. No words are necessary to convey the ideas, and it gives a toddler the opportunity to "read" to him/herself. This can be a nice distraction while parents are busy with the new baby.

I also think it's great that the mother is shown nursing. It can be difficult to find children's books that portray this, but children often see depictions of babies receiving bottles.

this is the best sibling book that i have seen on the market... there are no words so we were able to adlib what ever we wanted, such as "look there is baby henry having nummies with mommy!" which i might add there are TWO nursing pictures in this book and in a bottle filled world its a wonderful thing to see- i have bought this book for all of my pregnant friends with an older child-- i highly recommend it!

Just a really nice book to share with your child. I found it wonderful that it depicted breastfeeding because that is a huge part of Mom not being available at all times and it was nice to prepare my son for it.

We just got this book for my son (2 1/2) last week and already it seems like we've read it to him a hundred times. In preparation for the arrival of our second child, we thought this book was especially appropriate because it shows a very real portrayal of breastfeeding. The fact that there are no words makes it so every reading is different and allows for much flexibility.

I agree with other reviewers...Mommy breastfeeds baby (how do I explain to my toddler about books that feature bottles when he and his new baby nurse???). Daddy helps by cooking, changing diapers, and it features "babywearing," as Daddy wears baby in a baby carrier. In addition, big brother helps, plays with the baby, holds the baby, while being very positive. Big brother is also featured dressing himself (showing that he is getting bigger while Daddy dresses baby), and it shows Mommy and Daddy reading to big brother (showing that he, too, still gets Mommy and Daddy's undivided attention at times). The lack of words allow parents and child to discuss pictures and make up their story. This is very empowering to the young child, and is necessary for "prereading". All in all a wonderful book, and a great present to big brother from the new baby.

My son will be 2 in March and I'm due that same month to deliver his baby brother. I love this book for my little "big boy"; the fact that there's no writing is good for him because we can call the people in the pictures by name and make it more personal for him. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the very first picture in the book is of the mother nursing the new baby while the older sibling looks on. It's not the picture I have trouble with but that it's the very first picture in the book. It could have waited until later in the book and possibly started out with something like bringing the baby home from the hospital (which this book does not address). That's just my personal opinion, but I thought I'd mention it for anyone else who might be considering purchasing this book.

I thought this book would be wonderful, because of the picture only format. However, it didn't work out so well for us. I imagine if you are an avid storyteller, this book would be good for you. My daughter never took to it though, and I never got into creating the storyline.

I got this for my almost 2-year old son when we were about to have our baby. Well, our baby is now almost 10 months old and my son, now almost 3, still loves to "read" this book. It doesn't have any words, so you can just talk about the pictures and what is happening on each page. It's got things like mommy nursing the baby, people coming over to see the baby, daddy changing the baby's diaper and clothes, going on a walk with the two kids, making dinner, and giving the baby a bath and going to sleep. Now that my son is older, he sees himself as the little kid and says that his baby sister is the baby in the book. It's great when we can point out that the baby has some of the same toys we have, or talk about the baby taking a bath with the big boy helping. I also love how the dad does so much to help out :)

Purchased this book for 2-year old daughter before her brother was born. Would recommend purchasing before baby arrives so can talk about what is going to happen. This book has no words in it, but allows parents to talk about each page and what is happening. It walks the child through a typical day with a new baby...bathing, feeding, and even daddy taking them to the park (I always said so Mommy can sleep!). It shows the toddler helping with the baby and we were able to talk about safety and how things would change when the baby arrives. We purchased a few different books before 2nd child for 2-year old and this was the best one by far. Very simple, but effectivly gets the point across. Would recommend for any soon to be brother or sister!

The lack of text made this book an excellent learning tool for the arrival of our son's baby sister.

It covers nearly all the situations that could happen once a new baby is introduced and puts all the attention of the big brother rather than on the new baby.

After our daughter was born, our son seemed to accept her new role in the family without question and I feel much of that ease was having talked about it using this book.

At one point, her crying was really annoying him and we brought out the book again to show him that this was completely normal. Worked like a charm.

cute book but i would suggest that it is better if the new mother is nursing. my almost two old grandson could not understand what the new baby was doing with mommie while daddy was cooking and doing all the things his mommie does. the nursing mother thing threw him and he really does not like this book too much, since he can not relate to the story.

Unlike most books, this book pictures nursing. I gave it to a friend for her new baby and she was very pleased with it. She also said she liked how she could add her own words to this picture book.

I have an almost 3 yr old and he LOVES this book. Many of the other books on the market are very negative. The negativity of all the other books, I think, puts the idea of jealously in the heads of young children. My son doesn't feel jealous or left out as of yet and I don't want him to start thinking that way. Since there are no words he tells me what he thinks is going on in each picture and I can guide him with what information I feel is appropriate for his age. This book also shows the mom in the story breastfeeding which is a nice aspect, most other stories skip over that detail. Perfect book for any soon to be big brother/sister.

I bought this book for a friend that's pregnant and has a little boy that will be 3 when new baby comes. I looked thru the book when I got it and loved the idea of no words. This way they can fit their wording into their lifestyle that best fits them. They can put in their own names and family names and all with this book along with gender. I love the whole book especially the end where the parents along with the bigger sibling tuck the baby into bed. Then, the parents have their night time reading with the bigger sibling who can stay up later! In my house, that is definitely how it works!! It makes my 4 year old feel big and prevents jealousy!

And so does my two-year old son! It shows all the things that will happen with the baby and his big brother (my chosen genders). It even shows mom nursing which is a very big part of newborn life and I'm glad the author addresses it! And dad changes diapers too. I really like both of the books in this series and we got them both. They are favorites in this house!

My daughter particularly enjoys looking at books with pictures but no words right now: I tell the story and we discuss the pictures. She brings me this book and says, "Baby!" She really enjoys pointing to the baby and pointing out other objects in each picture (bunny, ball, snake doll, frog doll, bathtub, duck, etc.)

I bought the book even though we don't plan to have a second baby right away, because I really liked how the family is portrayed. Mom nurses the baby on the first page and then is shown nursing again while Dad and the older child make a salad for dinner. Dad is shown changing and dressing the baby on 2 pages, and then takes the baby and older sibling for a walk, wearing the baby rather than using a stroller! This is great for our family since we are committed to breastfeeding and babywearing, so it reflects my daughter's experience. I also like that both the baby and the older child are drawn in a gender-neutral way so you can customize your own story to be about a little boy or a little girl who gets a baby brother or sister, depending on your own family! I highly recommend this board book.

My 21 month old LOVES to read this book and see what the new baby will be doing! The baby is not gender specific so you can tailor it to fit your family. Also, I love that it shows the baby nursing two different times, and Daddy making dinner!!!! Fabulous!! No words allow you to make up the story to fit your family. This is a short board book about a toddler experiencing life with a new baby. Most of the pictures are peaceful watercolors, a few I thought were too busy for small children to process what is happening in the story. But overall, it's a nice gift to an expectant family as it doesn't put words into the mouths of the older sibling ("I feel left out. I hate the baby." blah blah blah like so many other "new baby" books do.) but rather allows the reader to adapt to the actual child's situation. (Maybe there is a child out there that is excited to have a new sibling? What a concept!) Bonus: breastfeeding is pictured twice, discreetly. Mom nurses the baby while Dad fixes dinner and so on. My 2.5 yo found this a fun book to page through on her own as she awaits her own new baby in the family.
