Multiple Blessings: Surviving to Thriving With Twins and Sextuplets

In Multiple Blessings, Kate Gosselin shares the gripping details of her rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and lows when she discovered she and her husband, Jon, would be expecting sextuplets while still basking in the light of their twin girls' toddlerhood. Strongly encouraged to consider selective reduction for the sake of both mother and babies, she and Jon instead decided to accept the extreme challenge God had handed them. After suffering the long and winding road of infertility, the young couple felt stressed but blessed as they fought valiantly to help their babies survive the fight for their lives. Kate reveals excerpts from her private journal as she describes the daily struggle to carry the babies for thirty weeks. In addition to their uphill medical battle, the family suffered many emotional setbacks such as the loss of Jon's job, forcing the pair to look to God as their sole provider and sustainer of life.

After the miraculous birth, the couple coped with months of neonatal intensive care for their newborns as well as Kate's physical recovery from such complete and prolonged bed rest. Later as the entire family of ten finally arrived home reeling with exhaustion, they still managed to feed, bathe, clothe, and monitor the health of their fragile infants as a steady parade of necessary and helpful volunteers turned their home and family life into a public arena.

The young family lived moment to moment at first, not knowing what each new day would bring and how they would survive on such depleted sleep, money, and emotional reserves. However, as the months progressed, they grew into the next stage of development, proudly letting go of yesterday and looking forward to a brighter and ever-changing tomorrow. Their small home was soon filled to capacity with six cribs, six bouncy seats, several changing tables, never-ending piles of laundry, tubs of colorful toys, stacks of diapers, cartons of formula, rows and rows of bottles, bibs and pacifiers, two triplet strollers, six car seats, and so on. Yes, life was hectic and cramped, but with each major milestone Jon and Kate rejoiced at the miracles that unfolded around them. The crew of six growing babies along with their proud big sisters, Madelyn and Cara, did their part to fill those rooms with squawking, squealing, laughing, and of course, a healthy dose of crying. Kate and Jon eventually came out of the fog of the first precarious two years feeling eternally grateful for the love and support of family, friends, community, and indeed a nation. More important, they felt the ever present hand of a faithful God upholding them and giving them just enough strength and courage to take one day at a time.

Like many other reviewers I was surprised at the quality of writing in this book, as it is coming from a "normal" stay at home mom and not a professional writer. I do agree that the similes are a little too prevalent, but they help the reader to understand the Gosselins' experience that much better.

Those reviewers who complained or were surprised that the book was so religious in theme obviously didn't read the dust jacket or the description provided by Amazon. For starters, the genre listed on the back of the book itself (ie. where it belongs in a bookstore) is Religion/Christian Literature! The descriptions and summaries are very clear that this book is, at its heart, a chronicle of how Jon and Kate's faith brought them through a very difficult situation. However, the book does also provide more details that fans of the TV show will be thrilled to read.

At least one other reader commented on what they saw as Kate's "sense of entitlement" expressed in the book. I would not call it entitlement, but there is a portion of the narrative in which she explains how the generosity of everyone around them was God's way of taking care of her family. She does thank them profusely, but she also goes as far as to say that God was "using" the people to make sure her family survived. While I do not always agree with her, I do respect and like Kate, so that for me was a bit difficult to read. I didn't really know what to think about those couple of pages. I think she could certainly give more credit to those people's big hearts and their free will.

Overall, if you are a fan of the Gosselin family and their show on TLC, you will find something to enjoy in this book. If you yourself are not particularly religious, respect that they see their faith as their saving grace, and skip the reprinted scripture. You will appreciate hearing the details of Jon and Kate's journey and getting a glimpse into their feelings about their family that is rarely adequately expressed on tv.

Pretty much is what their show is all about. What is missing was why after having been blessed with two healthy baby girls did were they not content, but instead did more fertility treatments that posed a health risk to Mom and babies when she ended up pregnant with six babies. Also troubling to me is the need to make money off the family because of the huge expense with pregnancy and other expenses. And I would like to read more why the Mother chooses to be such a control freak.

To anybody who is contemplating purchasing this book, please do a little homework and research the scam that these people (Jon & Kate) are running. This book is a joke. These people are con artists who plead poverty but now live in a multi million dollar mansion, all the while accepting "love offerings" from people at churches and selling their photos for $20. Truly appalling. And what is up with all of the Xtian pap in this book? ANybody who has seen this show knows what a disturbed mess this woman is...hardly someone who should be preaching to anybody else. Check the book out of the library. Save your money and give it to a worthy charity, not these grifters....

It definitely wasn't a "page turner" and the writing was similar to those old Cagney movies. Lots and lots of metaphors. It is very religious and I'm not sure if religion is mentioned a lot for the "drama".
Now, that may well be who they are. It just seemed it was put together fast and without much thought. Too much hype about a little below-average book and I fell for it. Anyone want to buy a used copy?

This was an interesting book looking into the lives of Kate and Jon Gosselin from the moment they met until the Sextuplets were a year old. Throughout some of the book it seems like Kate is trying to defend her actions. It seems to me like a lot of people criticize her and this was her way to speak out and explain it all. It was an interesting book and you got to finally hear the full story. If you are a big fan of the show this is a must.

(Hide Review...)  Good, easy reading--just not for the jealous, resentful types!
Reviewer Permalink
Like many of the reviewers, I too am a fan of the show and after reading the one very obvious negative review, I'm amazed at how many immature people are out there. Jon and Kate are two young and very normal people and quite honestly interact with eachother the way most couples (young or old, married or not married, kids or no kids) do. After reading their book and seeing how many obstacles they had to overcome and still manage to survive 8 kids and a tv crew in their house is amazing to me. I also think that the criticism and negativity they receive is fueled by jealousy, resentment and just comes off as petty. As for the criticism toward Kate, yes, she is tough and I'll admit b****y at times, but when it comes to your own kids, their well being, and molding the type of people they will eventually become, it is necessary. I say "Kudos!" to Jon and Kate!

I picked this book up because I watch the show with my 10 year old daughter and thought it might make me understand why Kate is such a b*tch. Well all it did was make me feel sorrier for those beautiful children and dislike Kate even more. From the beginning all she talks about is what a good Christian she is and how she puts all her faith in God. Ha-ha!! Would someone who was such a wonderful Chrsitian treat her family with such disrespect and use them for her own gain! From day one those poor babies have been used by Kate for all things material. Who wouldn't have 6 babies if it meant financial freedom for the rest of their life. She whines throughtout the book and really I have no idea why Jon is listed as an author with Kate because she wrote the whole book. She really should search her soul, however shallow it is, and do right by those children and stop using them. And I think Jon would have been gone a long time ago if not for the MONEY!!! While reading the book you get a sense Kate feels she deserves everything people give her for free and than some. She doesn't come off as thankful and at times sounds rude to all who are offering her FREE help. A real Christian Mom is Michelle Duggar, perhaps Kate could learn a thing or two about being a good and respectful mother by watching her - and she has 17 kids! A sad read.

I thought that this would be a book about experience (s) or how to raise kids. I have wandered through a few shows, and I know, don't judge until you have walked in someone else shoes, but I will have an opinion about the book, which is nothing like I thought it would be. And finally, that leads me to my last comment: When did she have time to write the book? I only have 3 and don't have the time . . .

This family has touched my heart the past couple of years. This book was so revealing and showed their hearts for their children. I appreciate the special things they do everyday for the kids. Very ingenous things to just get by each day with so many in the household. I admire Jon and Kate and think that all the critics should have to walk a DAY in their shoes and see how they would deal with ten people in the house. I pray that God keeps his loving arms wrapped around this family.

Reviewer Permalink
I pre-ordered my book "Multiple Blessings",about the popular TV show "Jon & Kate Plus Eight, because I enjoyed the program so much. Not being much of TV viewer,I have to admit I first noticed my daughter and her fiance turned in several nights to watch, and it seemed a good way to unwind after a day at work.

The first time I watched the program,I was amazed at Kate's organizational skills.I wasn't surprised to learn in the book she was a professional nurse.I can picture her a charge nurse of a busy E.R.I was curious why her parents were never on the show,or Jon's Mother. Through the book,Kate told how her Mom visited her every day,in the hospital prior to the babies birth.Although she does not state this, perhaps the parents want their privacy respected. They are there to help but quietly out of sight.

On page 136,Kate finally gets out alone. That made a tremendous impact on me.She leaves her eight little ones in capable hands, and seven months
after the septuplet's birth, unacompanied she goes shopping. When I read that,I just paused for a minute,I realized how much of her life,as their
Mother, she must devote to all eight children. It gave me some insight into
the way six infants would change your life.

People find fault with Kate in some of the reviews. They mention how Jon and Kate bicker.....they are two different personalities.Kate must possess a high energy personality to begin with, whereas Jon seems calmer providing a balance. They always make up in front of the children too. Some people resent the money they are making.I think to have a film crew in your home four days a week can hardly be easy. They earn every penny. How many of us would stand the intrusion.Beside,I find the show entertaining. The children are beautiful to watch, and Jon and Kate seem more like an average young couple than some of the other shows on TLC.

The book is a light read, shedding light on how Jon and Kate met and married.I better understood Kate and her reasoning and desire to be a mother. An excellent book for another Mother or Grandmother who likes to remember.

SO, I watch the show weekly, even record on the DVR so I can watch when there isn't anything else on. I was excited when I found out they had a book coming out and pre-orderd. THEN it hit me, I read other blogs, the show just started to not make sense...all of the sudden aunt jodi wasn't around, beth wasn't around, Jenny was their new 'babysitter' and the free trips continue and both parents are around 24/7. I was curious to read more then what is seen on the show, esp about their families and interestingly enough, there was a lot of info about Kate's family especially who helped out alot. It is odd to me that none are involved now. Anyway, the book was a HUGE disappointment...basically if you are interested, read the bible, every other page was a bible quote/verse/reference. To me, if you are that religious, you don't flaunt it and that is this book, all about religion. I wouldn't suggest...

I was interested in this book because I have seen the show a few times and really found it interesting. I had found the Gosselins likable people. I was so disappointed after reading this book! We are reminded through the book AD NAUSEUM how the Gosselins are CHRISTIANS. However, when they were approached by a teenage birthmother and had a chance to ADOPT her biracial baby boy they decided not to, blaming part of it on disaproval from their families. Instead they cried a little for him and planted a bush in his honor. Spare me. So they THEN went on to do fertility treatments, which in most cases would have produced six dead or severely handicapped children instead. Faith in God or not that is the REALITY! Thankfully for those kids they are healthy. They got lucky and you know the rest of the story. And as far as having issues with a biracial child? Um-- I hate to tell you this Jon and Kate but SURPRISE! You are a biracial couple with biracial kids!! I guess Asian/Caucasian is O.K. but other combos are a problem for this family. I didn't even finish this hypocritical drival. Don't talk the talk AD NAUSEUM if you don't walk the walk. What would Jesus do? They will tell you all about it! (and then do something selfish instead) Glad I didn't pay for it. (Thank you library)

If your a fan of Jon & Kate Plus 8 I believe you will enjoy this book. Its a very quick read and tells more of the early years leading up to the birth of their sextuplets. The book is heavy with christianity and me being very left wing liberial I get very annoyed with the "praise Jesus" type of person, HOWEVER, I think this was well done and you really see how important faith is to this family and how faith allowed them to survive the hardest times in their life. Its not a book that tries to get you to agree with their believes its just a book on how faith and love got them to where they are. I think many parts of the book Kate is very honest with what she is feeling and knows she is controling at times. I feel it doesn't get to how their life is now with the fame of the show and the good and bad that has brought them. Maybe that is for another book. I believe this family only wants the best and who can blame them isn't that what we all want??? We may not all agree what is the best but I think Jon & Kate know their family are have made their life work! IF you are a fan read the book; if you have an open mind about this family read the book; if you already are a critic and have your mind made up this book probably won't change it.

I have been an avid fan of the Gosselins for 3 years now, since their story has been documented on Discovery Health and now, TLC. I just had to have the book to learn more about their lives. Their story is so inspirational and at times down-right funny. I am so inspired by their devout faith in God and his plan for their lives. Each chapter begins with a biblical quote and there are pictures throughout. Color pix would have been better, but the cost probably would have raised the price of the book. As a single, childless person, I long for the happiness and chaos of their lives that are filled with love and shared experiences.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the show, are parents of multiples, or just anyone else interested in how the faith in God can enrich your life.

I watch Jon and Kate several nights a week, whenever I can find it. As a grandmother of four toddler girls (all within 2 years of one another), this has become one of my favorite television programs. One of the things that I most admire is that this couple keeps it REAL! Although every day is a challenge for them, they are committed to one another, committed to their family and committed to their faith. I have passed this book around to several friends already, and it will eventually end up in our church library. I hope everyone who is a fan of their show will read this!

(Hide Review...)  Very well written. Good writting style, flow and timeline of events.

When the book came out I noticed that the author is Beth Carson (along with Kate Gosselin). On the TV show "Jon and Kate Plus 8", it has been shown that Beth Carson is Kate's good friend, so I was concerned that the book itself may lack an experienced writing style. I was wrong! This book is VERY well written with an excellent flow and time-line of events.

The story is told by Kate with in-depth details that go far past what the TV show documents. One way to explain it is that the TV show lets you see all the action while the book provides insight into the emotional roller coaster and thoughts experienced by the parents, immediate family and some volunteers. Kate does a good job of explaining the mental and physical stress of raising six infants who are all the same age along with a set of twin toddlers. Kate didn't paint herself as a saint and openly talks about the times she was wrong and as she stated "not winning any friends". As a mom myself of multiples I thought the book gave an accurate portrayal of the stress of bed rest, carrying multiples, the sheer mental exhaustion that takes it's ugly toll.

The TV series is based mostly in their current home but the book focuses on their early days in the condo by the hospital and their first house. So fans of the show will enjoy reading about events that haven't been a part of the series. Each chapter of the book has a personal photo from the Gosselin family. The photos are fairly generic and similar to what has been seen on the TV series. But unlike the TV series the book goes into detail about the parents of Jon and Kate and other immediate family members. Those family members are mentioned lovingly quiet often which Fans of the show may find interesting.

Whether you are a fan or a critic, I think you will agree that the book is well written. It is a fairly quick read that is well worth it for anyone who is curious about this family or for someone who has struggled with raising multiples.

I used to watch the show religiously. I just got fed up with them. She had sextuplets due to fertility methods... great... wow? They shouldnt be rewarded for that! Many people have kids and no one is getting a free ride because they have kids! Now, a book? Whats next... a movie? Why arent people rewarded now for what they are instead of what they do? They have alot of kids... I have 4 and no one is giving us anything for that! I just had to vent. Cant stand them anymore. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

I'm not a person that enjoys reading too often, but I watch "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" on TLC and I feel attached to the family in some quirky way. I have not always followed the show and wanted to learn about the beginning of this wonderful family. Kate's book was well-written and she writes very eloquently and passionately about her life. She loves every aspect of her family and would change nothing. Kate inspires me since I have a toddler and an infant (and a teenager). Just when I think things are looking down (less money, more bills, lack of time, lack of sleep, etc), God will provide what He thinks that we need at that time. I enjoyed reading about her philosophy about family and religion. I am amazed that she had any time to write about her family. That is inspiring in itself. I highly recommend this book to anyone who just needs a confirmation that God provides what He thinks you need.

I have not been able to put this book down, but I'm trying to savor it. Love Jon & Kate Plus 8 so I knew I'd love Kate's book. Amazon had the lowest price. Thanks Amazon.

They are doing such a good job. If anyone can argue doing whatever you can to provide for your family, than I feel bad for your family. Jon and Kate saw an opportunity to share their story, and perhaps make a profit for their 8 children. 8 children that they didn't ask for (like that stupid Duggars family who just wont quit). Anyone who speaks negatively about this show/book/story needs to do some introspective work into their own lives.

I love the show and I thought the book was great. I am not sure why so many people here have to be so judgmental. It is pretty sad. I think the family is doing a good job, they are great parents, and their kids are well-behaved. Trust me, I have seen worse in families with 2 kids! Give them a break!

I watch the show Jon and Kate Plus 8 regularly and I decided to read this book. It was a pretty quick read. I have sometimes found Kate brash and hard to watch on the show, but after reading this book I feel I understand the feelings behind it. I found some of the happenings unbelievable (like when she donated money only to have a complete stranger give her the same amount.) The driving force behind the book is that God will always provide for her family, no matter what. It's true that someone provided for her and her family even when her husband was out of work and they had 8 children. I do not begrudge them their current highs because they have certainly had lows as well. It was a good book, but something about it just rubbed me the wrong way.

I love Jon & Kate and their show! They receive much scrutiny because of their situation but she never asked for 8 kids in 3 years but she has handled it very well and this book is a testament to her Faith. This book is her transformation into a mom of 8 kids. The only thing I was disspointed in was that it didn't include tips of how she manages her day and feeding such a large family. There is no new information as some reviews have mentioned, but it does provide better insight into their lives.

I have faithfully watched Jon & Kate Plus Eight since it started, and I loved this book. If you like the show, you will like the book. No, there is not a bunch of surprising new information about the family...they have never been ones to hide things about themselves...so what is left to say?,but the book is a wonderful, uplifting, grace-filled read.
Many of the negetive reviews are really hateful and down-right mean. If you don't like the show, the family or the way they run their lives, family and home...then why would you buy the book in the first place?
I highly recommend this book...and I completely support this family and the message of God's love they are trying to convey!

I loved the book. It was absolutely fabulous. I enjoyed reading how Jon & Kate coped with the news of sextuplets, and how they managed to endure the hard times by relying on God to get them through. It was very inspirational and shows everyone that all things are possible with faith in God.

How can anyone say this is a "normal" family? They scoop up as many freebies as they can get week after week on our TVs, expose their kids' behavior (good, bad, inappropriate, private, etc) for the world to see, moan and complain how difficult life is with eight...yes, EIGHT. Not 12, not 15, not 25, eight.

Yes, there are two sets of multiples, which can certainly happen after you use fertility treatments (and in your early 20s? Come on.)

But they are not the first, nor only, nor last large family to have ever existed. Yet there is always complaining that (1) there is not enough room in their little house for all of them. Well, I guess not, when you're talking all those people PLUS a crew and their equipment. And (2) they also go on and on about how hard Christmas is with so many, etc etc. Yet the free Gymboree clothes and Playskool toys pile on. Let's not forget the free trips to the spa, the ski slopes, Disney, the Crayola Factory, and Hawai'i.

I am also curious as to where Kate's former best friend, Beth Carson (the co-author of the book), has been, lately. The Gosselins are on a whirlwind tour for their book (not calling it that, of course), and yet the woman whose name is right on the cover, and who used to be so prominent in their lives, has just disappeared.

For anyone who has watched the show, and witnessed the greed and nastiness that pervades this house (so sad for the poor kids, some of whom are obviously completely checked-out), the book is absolutely laughable, and should really be categorized as "fiction."

Perhaps a better title would have been "Multiple Blathering$"

I've watched the show, and now I've read the book. Not sure which was more of a disapointment. These parents show extreme favoritism to some, downright dislike to other kids. They have sold the childhood of 8 innocent lives, childhoods that can never be recovered. It's obvious how unhappy they kids are. Look at their pictures, watch their show, they are horribly unhappy. Even the cover of Good Housekeeping, a full day photo shoot, and they couldn't get a picture with all of them smiling. But Jon and Kate are laughing all the way to the bank. Hope the money keeps them happy in their old age, because you can bet those kids won't be around.

I love anything about multiples, puts my nervousness about one baby into perspective. I also recommend checking out Assaulted by Joy: The Redemption of a Cynic by Stephen W. Simpson, for another perspective on dealing with the surprises life can throw us.

I enjoy the show, so it was great to learn more, especially about their faith and how that helps them survive. Assaulted by Joy: The Redemption of a Cynic is also a great book about the interaction faith and having multiples, though it's a bit more stark in it's examination of doubt and frustration with God.
