Freeing Your Child from Anxiety : Powerful, Practical Solutions to Overcome Your Child's Fears, Worries, andPhobias

Anxiety is the number one mental health problem facing young people today.

Childhood should be a happy and carefree time, yet more and more children today are exhibiting symptoms of anxiety, from bedwetting and clinginess to frequent stomach aches, nightmares, and even refusing to go to school. Parents everywhere want to know: All children have fears, but how much is normal? How can you know when a stress has crossed over into a full-blown anxiety disorder? Most parents don’t know how to recognize when there is a real problem and how to deal with it when there is.

In Freeing Your Child From Anxiety, a childhood anxiety disorder specialist examines all manifestations of childhood fears, including social anxiety, Tourette’s Syndrome, hair-pulling, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and guides you through a proven program to help your child back to emotional safety.

No child is immune from the effects of stress in today’s media-saturated society. Fortunately, anxiety disorders are treatable. By following these simple solutions, parents can prevent their children from needlessly suffering today—and tomorrow.

This is a great book for parents trying to help an anxious child. It is written in a straightforward way, without a lot of the fluff and extra verbiage that other, similar books include. The author includes realistic-seeming examples and vignettes, but not so many that they overwhelm the content. A very useful resource.

my daughter has not slept n her bed alone for 8 years. she was always scared of the dark. We have tried everything and nothing worked. I bought the book and taught her the how to handle things using the books ideas and she now has slept in her bed all night allnight by herself for 1 month. The book is wonderful and can imply to all types of anxiety problems and is a great book for parents. Praise God for this.

Any parent who has the unfortunate circumstance to pick-up this book and learn how to cope with their child's anxiety will find it very informative and helpful. More importantly it will help your family down the road towards freedom. Freedom for your child to understand their feelings of anxiety and begin to relax and enjoy their childhood experiences. Freedom is also attainable for the parents, and other siblings, to have more productive days without dealing with the amazing stress of altering daily actives to meet the needs of your anxious child.

Dr. Chansky does a great job at explaining anxiety in simple terms that a parent can use to help explain to the child and re-assure him/her that the problem is not their fault. There are practical steps outlined that helps the child understand the differences between "good" thoughts and "anxious" thoughts. Dr. Chansky then breaks down different anxieties that are most common in children and provides exercises for the parents to break the anxieties down and build a foundation to change the child's thinking patterns that lead to the anxiety.

While the book is laid out in a very easy to follow format, and devotes sections to your child's particular problems, I think the book should be combined with some professional help depending on the severity of your child's issues. It is a great tool to be used when working with your child to begin removing anxious thoughts, but as a non-professional I found certain exercise (although very helpful) opened the door to larger discussions that I was less prepared to help with.

A good book that will prepare parents and children towards successful freedom

Best help yet for dealing with our son's anxiety. It was like learning another language and I use the dialogue daily. Especially for a parent who does not have an anxiety issue, it really helped me to understand what a struggle it is to be in a state of constant worry and how to quit saying "there's nothing to worry about". For this book I will be eternally grateful as it is helping to change our son's life back into what a nine year life should be; birhtday parties, sleepovers and play dates, not hanging out with mom worried about the next separartion.

This book was extremely useful for me -- I don't suffer from anxiety so I didn't understand and was easily frustrated by many of my daughter's actions that were directly related to her anxiety disorder. I didn't understand the biological element and how the brain chemistry affects everything from how sensitive she was about her socks not feeling right to being unable to participate in an activity that she loved. I feel I understand some of what she must be going through and it has helped me be more supportive of her condition.

Our son was suffering an extreme case of separation anxiety. It came on suddenly after attending kdg for a few months. We believe that my being ill for a week was the trigger. He became overly worried about my well-being and the well-being of other immediate family members. He wanted us all to be together all the time. I ordered this book in hopes of finding some techniques to talk him through this and to get him over it so that he could return to school without crying. Within a week of using the ideas and conversations in this book, my son was back to "normal". Other anxieties are covered in this book as well and I would recommend it to anyone who would like to help their child overcome childhood anxiety. Wonderfully written and a wealth of information!

This book has been a huge help and I have recommended it to several other parents of children like mine. It has made it easier to help my son who is a perfectionist to let go and know that not everything is under his control and it is okay. He is going to sleep much better and even when stressed, he knows the steps to make his mind shut off and go to sleep.

This book is one of the best I've seen in terms of describing how anxiety works and providing tips to combat it. It is written clearly and plainly and even includes some illustrations that make it very easy to understand why kids with anxiety have difficulty with certain tasks. This book gave me hope for how I could help my two sons with anxiety. It made me feel empowered by giving me concrete advice that I could use at home and pass on to their teachers at school. This is required reading for anyone who has anxiety themselves or is trying to helping someone else who does.

(Hide Review...)  Your child may need magnesium; please read this review!
Reviewer Permalink
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, I suffered with it from childhood. As an adult I began having panic attacks and eventually became agoraphobic. During decades of suffering it was believed that my problems were neurotic and, therefore, I underwent years of treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and over the years read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your child's life as it has changed mine.

From the first page, this book gave me inspiration. I have two children with anxiety disorder and I learned right away that some of the ways I was trying to "help" were actually making them more anxious. After showing the books' illustrations and ideas to my son, we are now working TOGETHER against the anxiety. The results are nothing short of a miracle! My daughter's anxiety is under control with medication, but we will soon be trying to take her off, and we have the tools to help her.

This book is a pleasure - full of excellent, concrete advice about how to help your child master his or her internal "worry brain". But what surprised me is how much insight it gave me about how to handle my own worries and anxieties. Although written for parents, Dr. Chansky's insights and advice would be helpful to anyone who struggles with fears or phobias. Excellent resource, beautifully written.

Tamar Chanskys' book "Freeing Your Child From Anxiety" is a very practicle,jargon-free ,down to earth, yet professional book for parents. I am already reccomending it to the parents of my anxious young clients in order to compliment behavior therapy. It is also a wonderful guide for parents of "regular",non-patient, normal kids who face anxiety generating situations from time to time. As a child psychologist I am grateful to have this book to reccomend to parents.
