Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth

Oh, the joys of pregnancy! There's the gassiness, constipation, queasiness, and exhaustion, the forgetfulness, crankiness, and the constant worry. Of course, no woman is spared the discomforts and humiliations of pregnancy, but most are too polite to complain or too embarrassed to talk about them. Not Jenny McCarthy! In the New York Times best-selling Belly Laughs, actress and new mother Jenny McCarthy reveals the naked truth about the tremendous joys, the excruciating pains, and the unseemly disfigurement that go along with pregnancy. Never shy, frequently crude, and always laugh-out-loud funny, McCarthy covers it all in the grittiest of girlfriend detail. From morning sickness and hormonal rage, to hemorrhoids, pregnant sex, and the torture and sweet relief that is delivery, Belly Laughs is must-read comic relief for anyone who is pregnant, who has ever been pregnant, is trying to get pregnant, or, indeed, has ever been born!

It's the horrible truth. The parts of pregnancy no one talks about. Jenny is brutally honest and down to earth, so prepare yourself! This is not a book for the easily offended! I read this in combination with a more "objective" book. The informative book gave me the facts. This book added a real life element that helped me know better what to expect. I highly recommend it!

this book was so funny! I'm not a first time mom, this will be my third baby making his debut at the end of may or early June, but it's refreshing to hear that pregnancy takes everyone by surprise at first. I wish I had this book when I was prego with my first:) Jenny leaves nothing to the imagination, and is really informative about all the weird stuff. I've never understood why pregnancy isn't talked about to all women. I've let my friend who is trying to get pregnant borrow this book so that she has some idea of what goes on. I did include a warning to her though that not all pregnancies are the same and Jenny McCarthy is just one example.

I liked this book a lot. Jenny's honest, strait-forward, and has a great sense of humor. While I haven't experienced a lot of her symptoms, as I'm only just entering my second trimester, some I could totally identify with and she made me laugh and kept me real.

I'm reading Baby Laughs now, though I'm not due until May, but gosh... sure seems like there is a lot of stuff about delivery and the first few weeks that NO ONE, not even my closest friend (she'd be too embarassed) or my mom would warn me about. I like to know though, and what to expect. Knowledge is preparation, being prepared...is everything.

Thanks Jenny.

This is also very true, yet very funny. I loved reading this. So much of this book is right on the dot during pregnancy. It is so neat to read that someone else went thru what we go thru during pregnancy. The only difference is most people won't talk about it, yet she does and puts a funny spin on things!

All I can say is that this book is hilarious. I read this during my pregnancy, right before I would fall asleep. My husband would fall asleep first, until I came across one of the many LOL moments in the book, and then I would be laughing so hard that I would wake him up.Everything she talked about in the book was either true to my pregnancy or true to someone I knew. And that added to the hilarity.I recommend the book, then I recommend her second, Baby Laughs. Then I recommend that you share it with all your girl friends, mommies or not!!

I thought this book didn't have any amusement what so ever. If anything this would make a person very nervous about the whole miracle of life. She had a bad pregnancy accompanied by a hard birth. I would not read any of her other books as it would make me want to crawl under a rock and cry for what will life with a child bring next. Maybe being with Jim Carey has helped her in her life since her husband didn't seem to be much of a man but more of thorn in her side on top of all her pains an mood swings.

My wife and I are expecting a boy on about October 1st (2008). It's the first child for both of us, so we bought the authoritative "Your Pregnancy Week by Week (Sixth Edition)" by G. B. Curtis and Judith Schuler. We'd read a chapter every week. The book was interesting and informative but after about the 25th week we began to experience burn-out. We joked about the problem with another couple who recently had a baby. They said we were reading the wrong book and furnished us with a paperback titled "Belly Laughs" by Jenny McCarthy.

McCarthy is a Playboy model and actress. She has an earthy, self deprecating sense of humor. She described her pregnancy as it really was and she could be quite funny. My wife and I could easily recognize ourselves in her naratives. About the only differences were in matters of degree. For example, my wife hasn't experienced the headaches described by Jenny, but has had much more serious problems with "Charley Horses" in the legs and feet. Otherwise, our experiences follow Jenny's fairly closely. I'd say her experiences were a little more pronounced than ours. I doubt that she was in as good shape as my wife or took as good care of herself. Her husband came across as an insensitive clod here and there. On the other hand, she may have exaggerated slightly for the sake of humor, and she can be very funny.

The book is very informal, down-to-earth, funny and a quick read. Most chapters take no more than 5 or 10 minutes to read. It's not a serious treatise, but would provide good comic relief for any couple going through a pregnancy. The book is very informally written. Some like it as such and some don't. I have no way of knowing, but I have doubts that Ms McCarthy actually sat down to write the book. It reads as if it was dictated, recorded, and then typed up with only minimal editorial reworking. That's OK by me. It's an easy and fun book to read and I'd recommend it as light reading for any couple going through a pregnancy. Some people might find parts of the book offensive; My advice to them would be to lighten up a little. If you want heavier, more serious reading, the Curtis/Schuler book is one of many that might work well.

I read this as a suggestion from my sister during my 4th month of pregnancy. I was in the "easy" part of my pregnancy, so I'll probably read it again in my 9th month so I can appreciate it a little more. Her chapters of various symptoms were absolutely hilarious & blunt. She has a way of describing what our bodies & minds go through in a way that is totally relatable. It may be a bit raunchy for some, but pregnancy isn't always pretty & she says it as it is. Dark nipples, dry heaving, bleeding gums, constipation, it's all in the book & it's all true!!! I've already given this book as part of a shower gift & will continue to do so in the future!

This girl can write!!! I was shocked at how well spoken she is - and how appropriate her well-placed expletives are! This book totally captures the essence of pregnancy and is reaffirming of your own feelings/emotions during the experience. It even makes you feel well balanced when compared to her rollercoaster! What's most amazing is you feel like she's "just one of the girls" and that you just met your new best friend. This is a must read for all pregnant women and their spouses (my husband had a much better appreciation for me after reading this book - and I even overheard him recommend it to his friend whose wife isn't even pregnant)!!

This book didn't make me laugh and it provided no helpful information. I thought I would appreciate Jenny's point of view and at least chuckle once or twice, but no. It wasn't funny, wasn't well written, and mostly I thought she made pregnancy and labor sound horrible. You can't say all those negative things and then wrap it all up simply by saying "Despite all that, it is the most beautiful thing you'll ever do". Don't waste your money. Here's a sex symbol (who ended up having a very sick child and a not so perfect marriage) who makes fun of her self instead of seeing her child as the culprit of her situation. I admire that in her. One thing I notice about so many so called funny story books about motherhood. They take no consideration for the kids they're writing about. At least in this case, I didn't feel like she was blaming her kid for being the problem because as Dr. Phil says, MOTHERHOOD IS NOT ABOUT YOU.

I hated the latter- too preachy and no evidence to back-up the ridiculously cruel "pregnancy diets" and other policing nonsense. McCarthy's is much more realistic about pregnancy and absolutely hilarious. While not an encyclopedia-style reference manual like What to Expect, this book will help you feel good when you've got the pregnancy blues, are feeling insecure about your body, are moody and guilty, bloated, etc etc etc. I read it in a day and will read it again before my nine months are up. First off, when going into this book, you have to remember that this is Jenny McCarthy; not someone known for her eloquent and polite style. She is loud, crass, and honest. If you can handle that attitude, you will like this book.

As previous reviewers have said, this book is short, but I enjoyed being able to read it in a day or two for fun. What I enjoyed most about this book is that it never tried to be something it wasn't. It is very much JUST her experience, and she is not passing judgment on others who do not share her exact experience (unlike "The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy"). Jenny never pretends that she isn't a celebrity and even acknowledges that her fame got her some conveniences that others may not share. I didn't feel like she was trying to pretend she leads the same life as most of us, and I appreciated that.

This book is fun, light, and not meant to be taken seriously. Sometimes you need to put down the medical recommendations and laugh some.

Being pregnant for the first time is scary! A woman will experience so many changes in the nine LONG months before delivery that it is hard to understand what exactly is going on with the body and mind. For me it was fear. The thought of giving birth terrified me because of all the horror stories you hear from family and friends. Needless to say when I found out I was pregnant this past July (which came as a total surprise) I wanted to learn everything I could on childbirth. I bought the entire "How To and Everything" books, pregnancy 101, etc... These books were helpful, but at the same time placed more fearful thoughts into my head and were also hard to understand and not to mention boring! My mother-in-law recommended the book Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy because she heard that it was a funny read. At the bookstore I opened up Belly Laughs and read part of the first chapter and from that point on I couldn't put it down.

Everything that Jenny went though during the 1st trimester (I was at this stage while reading the book) I was also experiencing. She is no doctor, but she answered a lot of my questions that these HOW TO books couldn't. Not only did she keep me laughing and interested in her own pregnancy, but she also eased my mind for the upcoming months in preparation for delivery. This book is a page turner! I recommend this book to anybody who wants a good laugh or to the first time mom with fears and embarrassing questions that you would never dare to ask your mother! Trust me after reading this book you will want to buy her other books Baby Laughs and Life Laughs.
