3) The writer states that Mr. Jinnah had no real plan on how to run Pakistan once it materialized. This is quite extraordinary and contradictory for a leader otherwise shown to be highly intelligent.
Mr wolpert exerted his opnion that Jinnah did not know how to run the government of pakistan is correct in the sense that pakistan's existence and its prolongation could not be imagined by anybody in the hindu or british leadership. So the writer assumes quite efficiently that Jinnah did not know himself how to make pakistan survive. Although, Jinnah laid out his plan and the meaning of pakistan and how to make it successful in front of the parliment of newly founded pakistan. Secondly, Quaid has said it at number of occasions that pakistan will be founded on the basic fundamentals of quran, allowing the right to all the relegious minorities. Quaid's views were liberal under the umbrella of islam, which shows how much freedom islam allows when used under the modern system of governance. This is the best book I ever read about M.A. Jinnah.
In view of the excellent reviews already online, I have only the following to add in the interest of book buyers' overall reading experience. 1) Mr. Jinnah was personally frustrated by the mediocrity of his fellow politicians. This not only included the rivals such as Mr. Gandhi and Mr. Nehru but also - towards the end of his life - companions such as Mr. Liaqat Ali Khan. 2) Mr. Jinnah felt the fate of Muslims in united India would be no different than that of the American Negro (stated in one of his speech excerpts in the book). Would this single factor make him pursue his dream knowing full well that many of those vouching for Pakistan will never call it home? 3) The writer states that Mr. Jinnah had no real plan on how to run Pakistan once it materialized. This is quite extraordinary and contradictory for a leader otherwise shown to be highly intelligent. Happy reading! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-17 09:41:23 EST)

A Few Facts for the 'reader from USA' who wrote on April 15th 2002:
1) This brilliant book was written by an American Professor over 21 years ago. It wasn't written by a Pakistani. 2) Jinnah emerges as a modern and liberal leader who secures the freedom of South Asia Muslims. This is a Universally accepted view and many objective Indian Historians affirm this view. 3) Greater tributes to Jinnah have been given by Indians like Khushwant Singh, Kuldip Nayyar, Ajeet Javed, Raj Mohan Gandhi and to top it all of, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi himself. The first Indian constituent Assembly in 1948 remained silent in mourning for many minutes when it learnt of the passing of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Sadly India recently has become gripped by a fanatical and bigoted regime which is now attempting to distort History. Unfortunately it doesn't have any facts to work with. 'Reader from USA' who probably isn't from USA, is a sad manifestation of this unfortunate reality. As is obvious from his response, the "reader" is full of venom ... he resorts to childish namecalling... and claims that we are being 'anti-Indian' and 'anti-Gandhi'.. God knows how he comes to this conclusion because these reviews have nothing to do with India or Gandhi... It is time the fanatics in India halted and reflected on the unfortunate situation their actions are creating for the Billion plus people of Subcontinent... In another words all I am saying is 'GIVE PEACE A CHANCE'. Long Live the Secular, Democratic, Humanistic, and Modernist Republic of Jinnah's DREAMS! May God make Pakistan such a Republic. God knows how he comes to this conclusion because these reviews have nothing to do with India or Gandhi... infact it is he who has an anti-Pakistan and anti-Jinnah mania which is incurable... after all we didn't compare Gandhi to Hilter or Ossama Bin Laden despite the temptation to do so... Perhaps the best work on the man M A Jinnah- one of the least known personalites in history. Impartial, engrossing and detailed. A must for anyone interested in South Asian History.

I think most of the other readers have made a good case of why this book is such a great read. The status of Jinnah has attained mythic proportions in a society (Pakistan) where there is a complete lack of heroes to look up to. Unfortunately this means that Jinnah tends to be treated as some kind of prophet of Islam sent down to earth to liberate the muslims from the dual tyranny of the British and the Hindus. Wolpert peels away the cover to reveal the real Jinnah, a true hero and an infinitely more interesting personality then what most people in his home country know and believe.
I also find it intriguing that the two people who found the book bad enough to rate it a one did not have the decency to put their names to their reviews. This is a great book for anybody interested in the history of the sub-continenet, anonymous reviews to the contrary not withstanding. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-17 09:41:23 EST)
