ninety percent of this book can be summed up in a few words: move your arm, elbow, neck, hip, etc. through a full range of motion, slowly and in both directions. that's pretty much it. doing this lubricates the joints with synovial fluid and it does make a difference, but most people were taught how to do this stuff in gym class. if you know how to do arm circles, ankle circles, wrist circles, hip circles and so forth, you don't need this book.
the second section of the book covers a little bit of dynamic stretching, which Pavel calls "active flexibility," but the movements are far from comprehensive. for the price, this book should at least come with a DVD or something. if you are interested in increasing mobility, I would suggest getting Magnificent Mobility or an Ashtanga yoga video. you might also want to check out a video on Tai Ch'i Qigong warm ups, which are a more comprehensive approach to the same material. This material could've been condensed down to a long brochure. Nearly the same info as found in 'Relax into Stretch' which I stupidly bought as a companion book (It is not more than a few good pages of info either)

Like many of Pavel's other books, this one could be written in 3 or 4 pages, the rest just being repetitious filler. Someone who has never worked out probably can benefit a little from this, but I too found it useless in preserving or improving flexibility, although there may be some value in lubricating/warming up of the joints with some of the movements. Save your money, do not buy any of his written material (dvds are just as bad).

Three stars for being overpriced. Nothing really wrong with the content, but it's not worth $40.00.
You can find some great mobility drills in Harry Wong's book Dynamic Strength.....for about $9.95! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-07 01:25:27 EST)

This book offers some stretching drills and some calisthenic routines. Could be useful for those who are starting out on an exercise program and some of the exercises may improve your flexibility. The author's opinions on a few routines(squars and neck exercises) are not supported or substantiated by any research or any authority. Overall it has some useful advice and tips, but it is not an authoritative work.

Regardless of how Pavel markets his stuff, Super Joints is a lesson in smooth easy motion that will relieve joint pain and inflexibility. Pavel, a strength and conditioning guru, explains the secrets of flexible and pain free joints in this exercise workbook. Perfect for anyone with knee, back, shoulder, and neck pain.
Pavel, a world renowned strength and conditioning guru, uses the principles of "joint mobility" to increase range of motion and ease pain in the joints. Instead of stretching muscle to increase flexibility, Pavel promotes a system of creating room in the joints through strength and motion. The technique is an old world practice that combines exercises that you will recognize from yoga, martial arts and different eastern philosophies. I was first introduced to joint mobility by another guru named Steve Maxwell. I meet him at a seminar and he demonstrated a 20 minute routine that was dynamite and I immediately saw the value of it for my clients and their different aches and pains, because I felt fantastic afterwards. Annmarie and I then took a one-on-one session with Steve to pick his brain some more and get all the info we needed to start practicing joint mobility with our clients. He mentioned Pavel as a way to learn more. When I received Pavel's book, I got exactly what I was looking for and was able to easily incorporate his techniques into my client programs. They love the ease of the motion and what they love even more is how it makes them feel! This is perfect for someone who's suffering from joint pain and has tried other things to no avail. I'm giving this book such a low rating because of the ridiculous price. I bought it and read it a few years ago and I never feel the need to make reference to it. I question the actual value of the exercises. Recently when I was doing basic military training, I was doing some small knee circles before morning pt. One of the medical officers in my platoon walked over to me and said "stop that, that won't do a thing for you". For what I paid to read about this technique, that should have been the last thing on the mind of a medical professional.

I bought this book on the grounds that it would aid me in correcting my posture and improving mobility. That it does. It has drills for the active as well as the "soft living" sedentary folks, young and old alike. A great deal of which require a period to work up to if you're not the most flexible individual. This book holds fast to Dragon Door standards of large font, a slightly repetitive nature and directing many explanations and concepts to other books from the publisher. Super Joints is not the most compelling literary work out there, but it will suffice.

I have purchased most of Pavel's books and been pleased with all of them. Super Joints is no exception, it has helped me gather more information to keep my body in top shape.
This book is a little different from Pavel's others; it's not about a training routine so much as daily movements to improve joint health. Tha first portion of the book is dedicated to adults, mostly those 25-30 plus. I'm only 18 but still these movements are interesting to know and have for the future. My Grandad has pretty bad knees but has been able to perform most of the SJ movements and enjoys them very much. The second portion is dedicated to the general flexibility crowd. The excercises in this portion teach one to develope stength with flexbility and to achieve flexed positions without the aid of gravity or a partner. A great supplement to the Relax into Stretch movements. All and all this is a great book. For those with joint pains or a general inclination towards stretching, buy this and RIS right away. Most people will enjoy Power to the People or The Russian Kettlebell Challenge first, adding the two stretching manuals when and if their goals call for it. I find it funny that "Oavde" has nothing against Pavel and yet checks to see what has been posted based on his review and decides to repost with more scathing remarks. (I think 'she' doth protest too much). I work for an online romance company...not Pavel, should Oavde want to know.
This was my first KB book. True it has big text and some empty pages. BUT it was Pavel's first KB book to make and there is only so much you can put in about a KB. The pictures could be better (Black outfit against a black background using a black Kettlebell... you can make it all out but it is a challenge at times.) I can say I also got the video...which I found even better as some of the moves are better learned with a trainer or at least the DVD. Especially the Snatch...ouch to my aching and bruised wrists until I saw it demonstated on tape and studied it enough to really get it...then no more bruised wrists. Actually, if you are gonna get a book then I suggest Pavels "From Russia with Love" Geared more towards women in it's advertising...it actually is a better put together book. (If your not a woman...then start with a heavier bell, the exercise priniciples are the same, the book is just pushing the not gaining bulk and the ability to burn off fat approach in it's advertising. The book has clear pictures, includes a week to week routine guide to get you up and running. Short of emphasizing a couple of upper body exercises (it covers enough) I found this one hands down the best to start out with of his two books. True, there are lots of books and DVD's online you can buy...Like Mike Mahler has some good DVD's as does Max Kettlebell (which is really good for their beginner DVD's) and one aerobic KB/Speedbell workout. To get back to "oavde" point of expensive books with little material...I agree at times it seems rather pricey to spend nearly $40 for a paperback book that covers only a couple of things (like The Naked Warrior...it is a book for two exercises...the one armed pushup and the Pistol-one leged deep knee bend/squat. But when I questioned the people on the DragonDoor site that Pavel publishes from. They said they were selling it for what they felt it was worth in information given). So it is up to you to decide what it is worth to you... Past that... Oavde - be a lover, not a hater. Life is no fun going around being bitter...especially in the land down under where you are. So take care Mate. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-03-22 17:40:15 EST)

This book is divided into two parts. Part one deals with exercises for strengthening joints. Part two focuses on more intense athletic exercise.
Good pictoral illustations, some text provides limited instructions. Helpful book. Reader needs to have clear understanding of own health assessment. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-17 01:39:52 EST)

The common trend in this author's publications is that they devoid of most basic features of responsible writing. Although the author's intent is clearly commercial, he does not strive to earn credibility or integrity that are crucial to successful business. This book does not differ form his other book, "Relax into Stretch", yet bears the same sloppiness and emptiness of all the author's books. With large font, plenty of white space, and a hundred pages of text and figures, the book spins the same mundane drills that all yoga folks practice. Yet, this book is full of hot air. With 64 references to Russian and soviet figures and cultures, you would not find a single traceable reference other than bragging about the greatness of Russia and its research.
The book is split arbitrarily into two parts, mobility and flexibility drills, and strength and flexibility drills. The 17 mobility drills target each joint in the body and spans more than half of the book with many Russian anecdotes that are meant to fill the white space. The photographs are not properly labeled, nor does the text describe any critical hint for throwing most of the photographs there. The second part of the books entails compound drill such as the windmill, bridge, etc. Most of the drills lack logical description of progression or inclusion in a reasonable workout plan. Pavels got -three- 120 page books on stretching, Do new ideas keep coming to him after the last book is already out? I don't think so. Big print, lots of unused page space, and much attitude take up what could easily fit into one book,(one cheaper book).

Pavel is an accomplished guy with some impressive physical ability. I respect that, so I got a few of his books and borrowed some of his tapes to see what he recommends.
"Super Joints" is a quick, easy-to-follow handbook that anyone can use for basic guidelines on how to regain or improve overall joint mobility and flexibility. Many of the movements presented will be familiar, but some of his ideas of how to combine them may not be. I would have liked to see more detailed descriptions, including variations and more photos of some movements. After a 6-month break from nearly all physical activity, I started to get back into working out by incorporating a number of the movements and principles in this book. Overall, I am pleased with the results, and I feel this justifies a portion of the advertised price. Aside from the joint mobility movements and principles, Pavel does talk about the use of calisthenics that will progressively increase joint mobility as well. While it doesn't get as much attention as it deserves, I have combined what he did present with my existing knowledge of basic and advanced calisthenics and gotten good results that way too. If I didn't have some experience with this, I don't know if I could have had the same success based solely on what the book contains. Pavel also touches on the stretching principles outlined in some of his other books, which are predominantly based on PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching doctrines. He definitely intends for you to combine this with his other works in order to realize the full benefits, but most people can certainly have some good success with the material he presents here. This book's biggest failures are the oversimplified presentation and lack of variations, and the mediocre editing job which leaves some odd printing and writing errors to contend with. I am glad I have a copy, and I am really glad I got it for half price, which is about right. I highly recommend looking at Kit Laughlin's "Stretching & Flexibility" and "Overcoming Neck & Back Pain" for a better presentation on regaining mobility through PNF stretching, and Scott Sonnon's "Bodyflow" is a fascinating and extremely detailed approach to improving overall mobility through coordinated movement. I'm very surprised by some of the negative reviews of SuperJoints. Many people seem disappointed that Pavel does not include more pages in his books in general, but what he includes is more than sufficient - I perform many of the SuperJoints exercises every day but there is no way I'd ever have time to perform all of them.
SuperJoints combines tried and true old Russian wisdom with a modern, no-nonsense presentation and supporting scientific evidence to tell you what you probably already knew intuitively - if you don't move your joints, they will deteriorate. Pavel shows you why you need to move them and how to move them to keep them healthy for the rest of your life. I don't see how anyone could possible ask for anything more from a book on joint health than that. Highly recommended! And note that the publisher offers a 1-year, unconditional money-back guarantee if you don't feel you got your money's worth. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-26 23:25:52 EST)

I am ~extremely~ suspicious of other reviewers here, who have posted in response to my earlier review that only gave 1 star.
I think many of the reviews here were written by Pavel or agents for Pavel, friends, family, business associates - whatever. I suspect it is very, very much his way of doing things. He is a very aggressive marketer - and successful at making a name for himself - and I would not be at all surprised if he deliberately spammed amazon + other sites with positive recommendations for his books. There is no justification for many of the positive reviews seen here. Quite a few of them refer to things that the book simply does not contain. I have nothing against Pavel and I think some of his other works are very good, for example, the Kettlebell book. It is not the best it can be, far from it, it is very incomplete, but overall the Kettlebell book is a good read, has good exercises, Pavel has quite a bit of eccentric charm. HOWEVER I think this book is a bit light, nothing special, and I think most if not all the positive reviews here are covert advertising - so anyone reading these, take note of what I am saying, take them with a grain of salt AND LOOK AT THE BOOK FOR YOURSELF before you buy it, make up your own mind. I am not denying that the book has some worth nor that the exercises won't help you out, however the price is high, the content sparse and the advertising thick and in your face. MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND. Oh, and Pavel (+friends), please don't come back posting a review along the lines of "well I was put off by the negative review then I had a look in the bookstore and it was fantastic" you've already done a few of those. I say to genuine readers - go and LOOK at the book first (then order from amazon if you like it). DON'T trust these reviews. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-26 23:25:52 EST)

No doubt Pavel Tsatsouline is in incredible shape....but for $34.95....the book had what seemed like 20 pages of cheesy advertising...!!! Check out Kit Laughlins' Stretching and FLexibility before buying any of Pavels books.....its half the price and twice the book in all ways!!!

I foolishly injured my left shoulder a few months ago. With this injury, I lost a lot of ROM on my left shoulder, I suffered sudden and sharp pain, and the usual "frozen" joint syndrome. I picked up a copy of Pavel's "Super Joints" book; I had heard of this book before but, frankly, didn't give it much attention. Well, with the injury in mind, I gave SJ a second more thorough look. I decided to try the first of the 1-17 drills. Well, surprise! Not only did my shoulder started feeling better from the first few practices, my entire body began to appreciate the daily 'recharge'. Very soon, I became addicted to SJ and I now feel like a million-bucks. The entire SJ drills are well described and easy to follow. As an additional companion, I also picked up Pavel's "Relax into Stretch." I now alternate days with SJ and RIS. On Pavel's website ... is an article on how to incorporate Tai-Chi/Qigong, even Yoga, synergistically with the SJ experience.
I heartily recommend SJ for its simplicity, usefulness and practicality. One can easily add it before (or after) a weight and strength-training workout, incorporate it with body-weight only Calisthenics circuit, or a classic Russian Kettlebell program. Or ALL of it, if one is so inclined. Either way, Super Joints is an excellent program.

Due to several severe car accidents and a fall I used to wake up extremely stiff, sore and aching and would pop some ibuprofen just get the start of the day going. I got this book and still woke up with lots of pain but after the exercises it was gone. Over time I started waking up with no pain. I'm quite faithful to doing this nearly every day because life without pain is incredible.
